Why Every Believer is called a Disciple

Why Every Believer Is Called to Discipleship

Introduction

Discipleship is not a special assignment for a select few in the church; it is the calling of every believer in Christ. From the moment we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are invited into a lifelong journey of following Him, learning His ways, and helping others do the same.

Unfortunately, many Christians see discipleship as optional, or as something reserved for pastors, leaders, or missionaries. The truth is this: every believer is called to discipleship.

In this article, we will explore what discipleship means, why it is essential, and how every Christian can live out this calling daily.

What Is Discipleship?

At its core, discipleship means becoming a follower of Jesus Christ. A disciple is not just someone who believes in Jesus but someone who actively seeks to learn from Him, imitate Him, and apply His teachings in everyday life.

Jesus Himself defined discipleship clearly in Luke 9:23: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Discipleship is therefore about:

#1 Transformation of character

When you become a disciple, it has to reflect in your character. You need to learn his ways and plan to pattern your life after him. That means becoming more like Christ.

#2 Obedience to God’s Word

As a disciple, you have to obey Gods word and make sure you are following his ways and actions. You need to also desist from whatsoever the Bible has asked you not to do and follow his ways.  it is not just hearing, but living it.

#3 Multiplication

I have said it severally that as a disciple, you must evangelist others. You have to multiply yourself by telling others about Christ nYou just have to be zealous about it. This has to do with helping others to follow Jesus as well.

Why Every Believer Is Called to Discipleship

#1 It Is a Direct Command from Jesus

In the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), Jesus commanded His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations .” This command was not limited to the apostles; it extends to every believer who carries the name of Christ. Discipleship is not optional.

#2 Discipleship Leads to Spiritual Growth

A Christian who does not engage in discipleship risks remaining spiritually immature.

Through studying God’s Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers, discipleship helps us grow in faith, resist temptation, and stand firm in trials.

#3 It Prepares Us for Service

God has gifted every believer with unique talents and spiritual gifts. Discipleship equips us to use these gifts for God’s kingdom.

Whether through teaching, serving, encouraging, or evangelizing, discipleship helps us discover and fulfill our purpose.

#4 It Impacts Generations

True discipleship multiplies. When one believer is discipled, they are equipped to disciple others. This chain reaction ensures that the faith is passed down from one generation to the next, fulfilling Christ’s mission on earth.

#5 It Reflects Our Love for Christ

Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.” Following Christ through discipleship is an expression of our love and devotion to Him. It shows that our faith is not just words, but a lived reality.

How to Live as a Disciple Today

#1 Spend time in God’s Word daily

As you cannot do without eating food daily, so also a disciple must study the word of God daily. Learn His teachings and apply them. You have to learn his words so that it can impart your life positively.

#2 Commit to prayer

Bible admonished us to pray without ceasing. We need to make sure we stay connected to God in all circumstances. There is a need for you to continue to pray in order to communicate with God effectively.

#3 Join a community of believers  As a believer , you need to know that you cannot work the Christian journey alone, you must be accountable to someone. Accountability and fellowship strengthen faith.

#4 Serve others with your gifts

As a disciple, we are discipled so that we can serve others. In order to grow, you need to put your faith into action. You must be ready to serve others with the gifts that God has given you.

#5 Share the gospel

I have said it severally that you need to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with unbelievers. You need to help others know and follow Jesus. You must do this prayerfully in order to ensure that the gospel of Christ reached others.

Conclusion

Every believer is called to discipleship because it is the heartbeat of the Christian faith. To follow Jesus is to be His disciple, and to be His disciple is to grow, serve, and lead others toward Him.
