Definition:
Human Intelligence (HUMINT) refers to the collection of information from human sources. In cybersecurity, it involves gathering insights about potential threats, threat actors, and attack strategies directly from people rather than automated systems or technical data.

Sources of HUMINT

1. Insiders and Employees – Employees or contractors may inadvertently or intentionally provide valuable information about vulnerabilities, security practices, or potential attacks.
2. Industry Contacts – Security professionals, partners, or vendors can share observations about threat trends.
3. Social Engineering Investigations – Engaging with forums, underground marketplaces, or communication channels where threat actors operate.
4. Interviews & Questionnaires – Conducting structured interactions with stakeholders to uncover potential risks or vulnerabilities.

Key Uses in Cybersecurity

• Threat Actor Profiling: Understanding motivations, methods, and intentions of hackers, hacktivists, or insider threats.
• Incident Investigation: Providing context and background information during forensic investigations.
• Strategic Decision-Making: Informing organizational policies and security investments based on human insights.
• Early Warning Indicators: Detecting potential attacks before technical indicators appear.

Advantages

• Provides context that technical data (like malware signatures) cannot.
• Can uncover insider threats or social engineering attempts.
• Helps predict attacker behavior and intentions.

Limitations

• Subjective and potentially biased.
• Reliability depends on source credibility.
• Labour-intensive and time-consuming.

In essence, HUMINT complements technical intelligence (like SIGINT or OSINT) by adding a human perspective to cybersecurity decision-making.
