Getting Started with the Scratch Simulator

Last updated: August 8, 2026
What you're practicing: building your first program using blocks instead of typed code. 1. Click "Open" to launch the simulator. 2. Click a Motion block (e.g. "Move 10 steps") to add it to your script -- it appears in the middle script area. 3. Click the green Run flag and watch the cat sprite move. 4. Add a Turn block after it, run again, and see how direction changes what Move does next. 5. Add a Say block so your sprite talks. 6. Try a "Repeat 4 times" block wrapped around Move and Turn -- that's how you draw a square with almost no blocks. 7. Click the X on any block to remove it, or Reset Sprite to start the stage over. 8. When you're happy with your script, click Save This Project to keep it. Tip: build 2-3 blocks, run, watch what happens, then add more -- that loop (build, run, watch) is exactly how real programmers work too.
