Why Did You Doubt? A Big Question For Peter

Posted on August 11, 2025August 11, 2025 by Adeniyi Salau

MAIN SCRIPTURE: Matthew 14:28–31 (KJV)
“And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”

🌅🙏Beloved of the Lord,
As the sun begins to fade and night sets in, I want to speak to the hearts of those who began this year with great expectations but are now feeling the weight of storms — financial storms, family storms, emotional storms, and even storms of faith.
You prayed. You trusted. You believed. But along the way, something shifted — not because Jesus failed, but because doubt crept in.

🌊✝️Faith is not merely believing God exists — it is walking with Him into places that make no human sense. The Greek word distazō (διστάζω) for “doubt” means “to stand in two minds” or “to waver between two truths.” You cannot walk on water while negotiating with fear.
Doubt is subtle — it doesn’t always scream; sometimes it whispers:
“What if God doesn’t show up this time?”
“What if I misunderstood His calling?”
“What if I fail and everyone sees it?”

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY 📜
It was somewhere between 3 AM and 6 AM, the darkest part of the night. The disciples were in the middle of the sea, battered by winds and waves. Out of the mist came Jesus, walking on water. The Hebrew image here reflects God’s sovereignty over chaos — in Job 9:8, it says He “treads upon the waves of the sea.”
Peter recognized His voice and said, “Lord, if it’s truly You, command me to come.” Jesus said one word: Come. That word carried enough power to suspend the laws of physics and hold Peter above the deep.
For a few steps, Peter was in the supernatural realm. But when his eyes shifted from the Master to the wind, fear (Greek phobos, φόβος) flooded his heart, and he began to sink.

LESSON LEARNED 🌟
🌊 You don’t fall because the waves became stronger — they were already strong.
⚠️ You fall because you let the visible storm overpower the invisible Word.
✝️ Faith feeds on focus; doubt feeds on distractions.

📖WHY DID PETER DOUBT?
1️⃣ He allowed his senses to override his spirit.
2️⃣ He interpreted divine instruction through human logic.
3️⃣ He forgot that the One who called him was already standing on what terrified him.

Many believers start their spiritual journey with fire but slow down because:
♧ Financial pressures — bills, rent, school fees, food scarcity.
◇ Relational wounds — betrayal by trusted friends or partners.
♡ Emotional struggles — heartbreak, loneliness, neglect.
♤ Spiritual persecution — mocked for holiness, sidelined for integrity.
■ Unmet needs — waiting for healing, breakthrough, or marriage.
□ Life delays — years of prayer with no visible answer.
● Personal failure — falling into sin or making wrong choices.

HOW CAN WE STOP OR RESIST DOUBTING?
✅ Feed your spirit more than your fears — Romans 10:17.
✅ Surround yourself with believers who speak life, not death — Hebrews 10:24–25.
✅ Recall past deliverances — Psalm 77:11.
✅ Pray until God’s peace replaces panic — Philippians 4:6–7.
✅ Keep obeying even when it feels risky — 2 Corinthians 5:7.

HOW DOES FOCUSING ON CHRIST KEEP US STEADFAST?
When you keep your eyes on Jesus:
◇Spiritually: You stand on His Word, not sinking sand.
◇Emotionally: You find calm even in chaos — Mark 4:39.
◇Mentally: His promises replace anxious imaginations — Isaiah 26:3.
◇Practically: You make wise, faith-led choices in life’s storms.

INSIGHTS 🔍
PSYCHOLOGICAL 🧠 – William James: “Belief creates the actual fact. Doubt kills action before it begins.”
PHILOSOPHICAL 📚 – Søren Kierkegaard: “Faith sees best in the dark.”
NEUROLOGICAL 🧬 – Faith activates the brain’s decision-making centers; fear activates the threat centers, shutting down vision.
LEADERSHIP 🏆 – John Maxwell: “The leader’s calm in the storm determines the team’s survival.”
BIBLICAL ✝️ – Hebrews 12:2: “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…”

KEY LESSONS ✅
♧ Faith is an active focus, not a passive feeling.
◇ The storm is never the problem — distraction is.
♡ God’s call carries the power to sustain you, if you keep walking.
♤ Even if you start to sink, Jesus’ hand is still near.

MEMORY VERSES 📜
Isaiah 26:3 (NIV) – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
♡James 1:6 (KJV) – “…let him ask in faith, nothing wavering…”
♡Psalm 46:1 (KJV) – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

APPLICATION CHALLENGES 💪
◇ Identify one “storm” in your life and speak God’s Word over it daily.
♡ Write down three past times God came through for you — revisit them often.
♧ Share a testimony with someone struggling to believe.

LET’S PRAY 🙏
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I’ve doubted You. Strengthen my faith to see You above every wave. Help me to walk boldly in Your calling, no matter how illogical it seems. In Your name, I choose faith over fear. Amen.
