 Introduction

Democracy means “power of the people” — the idea that everyone has a voice in choosing leaders. Although the Bible does not explicitly teach modern democracy, it supports principles of justice, fairness, counsel, and equality that align with it.

Lesson Aim

To encourage students to understand biblical principles related to democratic participation and civic responsibility.

Teaching Objectives

By the end of the class, students should be able to:

  • Mention biblical principles for democracy
  • Define civic responsibility

Lesson Outline

Lesson Outline 1 – Biblical Principles of Democracy

Guide discussion then teach the following:

  1. Justice and Fairness: All citizens should be treated equally under the law — a biblical principle that should guide governance.
  2. Equality and Voice: Every individual’s voice matters, and collective decision-making is encouraged.
  3. Rule of Law: Good laws must protect everyone, including leaders.
  4. Balance of Leadership Roles: Different leadership functions exist with accountability.
  5. Leader Accountability: Leaders must serve righteously and for the good of the people.

Lesson Outline 2 – Citizens’ Civic Responsibility

Discuss how believers can participate meaningfully:

  • Be informed about rights and governance.
  • Vote, hold leaders accountable, and participate in peaceful civic processes.
  • Engage in dialogue, debates, and community meetings.
  • Use group platforms for advocacy and positive influence.
  • Religious leaders should speak truthfully and wisely about societal issues.
  • The media should report objectively and responsibly.

Conclusion

If believers embrace democratic principles and act responsibly, society will benefit and serve the common good.
