Posted on January 19, 2025June 27, 2025 by Adeniyi Salau

OPENING PRAYER: O Lord, help me to be kind-hearted in Jesus’ name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should review the previous week’s lesson.

 BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 18:1-10 (KJV)

1 And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:

5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.

6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.

8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

9 And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.

10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

Being hospitable is a mindset. It is a conviction and an incurable attitude that is always displayed by the actions of the hospitable person, just like Abraham entertained the three men in Genesis 18:5.

Some key qualities showcased by hospitable people are stated below:

  1. Friendliness: Hospitable persons are pleasant without any form of hostility (Ruth 2:13-14).
  2. Generosity: They are extremely liberal and give without holding back (1 Kings 10:10; Proverbs 11:24-25).
  3. Openness: They operate with open minds and readily accept new ideas and suggestions (2 Kings 4:9-11).
  4. Swiftness: They are quick to welcome and entertain guests and strangers all the time (Genesis 19:1-3).
  5. Compassion: They are concerned about the state of others (Matthew 15:32-36). This compassion is extended to lost souls thus they go after the lost sheep (Matthew 10:6-8).
  6. Selflessness: They are not selfish (2 Corinthians 12:15).
  7. Accommodativeness: They can bear long with others and tolerate them (Luke 15:20-24).
  8. Warmness: They show kindness with their smiles, words, and actions (2 Samuel 9:1, 7).
  9. Bearing Burdens: They relieve others of their problems (Acts 9:36; Romans 15:26).
  10. Cordial: They leave a lasting impression of love (2 Samuel 19:32).
  11. Sacrificial: They give by denying themselves (John 6:9).
