So, how do you prepare the best filter coffee in order to enjoy all its taste and flavours? With an electric or “sock” coffee maker, all you need to do is follow a few basic guidelines: the choice of filter, the quality of the water, the size of the grind, and the quantity of coffee used.
The choice of filter and its use.
Choosing a quality filter is essential to facilitate the extraction of coffee oil and reveal its multiple aromas. Paper filter or permanent filter? Prefer unbleached paper filters, without chemical treatments. They do not alter the taste and aroma of the coffee and are easily compostable.
If you are using a classic paper filter, rinse it lightly with clean, lukewarm water before use. As for the permanent ceramic or plastic filter, be sure to wash and rinse it thoroughly so as to leave no residue that could degrade the quality of your coffee. In order for the extraction of coffee oil to be optimal, use simmering, not boiling water.
Filter coffee: choose the grind, choose the right size and the right dosage.
As with filters, there are different ways to do this. If you are lucky that there is a roaster in your town, call on their expertise. It will adapt the grinding calibration according to the type of coffee you want to taste.
A fine grind will be more suitable for making espresso, for example. In our case, prefer a coarser grind. To fully appreciate all the flavours of freshly ground coffee, I invite you to grind the instant and homemade coffee beans.
Proceed step by step to better appreciate the size of the grind. Too fine, it will give your coffee bitterness, too coarse, it will not allow the water to infuse correctly and your coffee will be bland. There are already ground coffees of high quality on the market. A word of advice: if you choose the third option, store your coffee in an airtight box that will keep the coffee away from air and humidity in order to preserve all its taste qualities. To obtain a balanced coffee, count between 8 to 10 grams per cup or 100 ml of water.
How to proceed?
Put your filter in the filter holder and moisten it with lukewarm water. Empty the water that has flowed into the coffee maker.
Bring the water to a simmer or fill the tank of your coffee machine.
Fill the filter with the appropriate dose of coffee. Do not tamp the coffee; you need to make sure you get a small dome.
Pour a small amount of water in circular movements so that it is distributed harmoniously and makes the grind swell. Continue to pour the water from the centre to the edges and back to the centre.
