RCCG Sunday School Teacher Manual 19 January 2025 Lesson 21 – Be Hospitable

RCCG Sunday School Teacher Manual 19 January 2025 TOPIC: Be Hospitable

OPENING PRAYER: O Lord, help me to be kind-hearted in Jesus’ name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should review the previous week’s lesson.

 BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 18:1-10 (KJV)

1 And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:

5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.

6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.

8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

9 And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.

10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

MEMORY VERSE: “Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.” – Romans 12:13 (KJV)

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Hospitality is the act of showing kindness and welcoming strangers. We have Corporate and individual hospitality (Acts 2:42-46; 2 Kings 4:8-13). To be hospitable is to be disposed to treat guests and strangers with cordiality and generosity. Being hospitable is a command and a virtue that is commended in  the Bible (Hebrews 13:2-3). Hospitality is rooted in generosity, gift exchange, and reciprocity. This lesson shall examine the attributes of a hospitable person and the various blessings attached to being hospitable.

The teacher should allow the class to discuss the attributes of hospitable people.

Being hospitable is a mindset. It is a conviction and an incurable attitude that is always displayed by the actions of the hospitable person, just like Abraham entertained the three men in Genesis 18:5.

Some key qualities showcased by hospitable people are stated below:

  1. Friendliness: Hospitable persons are pleasant without any form of hostility (Ruth 2:13-14).
  2. Generosity: They are extremely liberal and give without holding back (1 Kings 10:10; Proverbs 11:24-25).
  3. Openness: They operate with open minds and readily accept new ideas and suggestions (2 Kings 4:9-11).
  4. Swiftness: They are quick to welcome and entertain guests and strangers all the time (Genesis 19:1-3).
  5. Compassion: They are concerned about the state of others (Matthew 15:32-36). This compassion is extended to lost souls thus they go after the lost sheep (Matthew 10:6-8).
  6. Selflessness: They are not selfish (2 Corinthians 12:15).
  7. Accommodativeness: They can bear long with others and tolerate them (Luke 15:20-24).
  8. Warmness: They show kindness with their smiles, words, and actions (2 Samuel 9:1, 7).
  9. Bearing Burdens: They relieve others of their problems (Acts 9:36; Romans 15:26).
  10. Cordial: They leave a lasting impression of love (2 Samuel 19:32).
  11. Sacrificial: They give by denying themselves (John 6:9).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Do you think you are hospitable? Discuss.

The following are some of the benefits of being hospitable:

i. God pays attention to hospitable people and answers their prayers (Genesis 18:10).

iii. Their deeds are recognised by Jesus (Matthew 25:40).

iv. It attracts miracles and uncommon blessings (Acts 28:7-8).

v. God is pleased (Hebrews 13:16).

vi. It attracts divine visitation (Hebrews 13:2).

vii. It helps believers express the love of Christ thereby drawing people into the kingdom (Leviticus 19:9-10; 1 Peter 4:8-9).

viii. It is a necessary virtue to relieve or give succour to those in distress (Romans 12:13).

ix. It is a condition that aids Church leadership (Titus 1:7-8; 1 Timothy 3:2).

x. Being hospitable makes a believer inherit the kingdom prepared for him/her by God (Matthew 25:34-36).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Why do you think some people are not hospitable?

The Deity Of Jesus. RCCG Sunday School Manual

TOPIC: The Deity Of Jesus

MEMORY VERSE: “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” – 1 John 5:20 (KJV)

 BIBLE PASSAGE: John 1:1-5,14 (KJV)

John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

John 1:14
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

INTRODUCTION: Generally, a ‘deity’ is a ‘god or goddess’ in a polytheistic religion (belief in many gods). Also, a being of divine status, quality, or nature is referred to as a deity. In the context of the Christian faith, the Deity is the Creator and Supreme Being. The argument about the Deity of Jesus Christ is common among people of other major religions (although they teach that Jesus was a prophet, a good teacher or a godly man). However,  the Bible tells us that Jesus was infinitely more than the three combined (Matthew 16:13-16). Jesus is God. He is Divine.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. THE DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST
  2. REASONS THAT JESUS IS GOD

1. THE DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST

Here are some of the biblical evidences that Jesus is God:

  1. Jesus is a member of the Godhead (Genesis 1:26a) referred to as the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit). The Bible clearly states that the Godhead resides in Jesus Christ bodily (Colossians 2:6-9). God the Father refers to Jesus as God (Hebrews 1:8).
  2. Old Testament prophecies of Christ announce His deity as the mighty God (Isaiah 9:6).
  3. Jesus says in John 10:30 “I and My Father are one” and “before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58). Jesus, announcing His identity as “I AM” is a direct application of the Old Testament name for God (Exodus 3:14). Jesus receives worship several times in the Scripture (Matthew 2:11; 28:9; Luke 24:52). He never rebukes people for worshipping Him.
  4. The apostles, through divine inspiration testify that Jesus is God. For instance, John 1:1 says “…the Word was God.” John 1:14 says “And the Word became flesh…” This indicates that Jesus is God in the flesh. Thomas the disciple in John 20:28 declares to Jesus, “My Lord and my God” Jesus did not correct him. Apostle Paul describes Him as, “…the great God and our Saviour, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). Apostle Peter says the same, “…of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:1).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Share with the class any encounter with non-believers who reject the fact that Jesus is God.

2. REASONS THAT JESUS IS GOD

The provision of salvation only works if Jesus is God, hence the divinity of Jesus is the why He is the only way of salvation (Acts 4:12; John 14:6). Jesus is God incarnate, the eternal Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8; 22:13). Jesus has the right to forgive sins. This is something only God can do (Acts 5:31; Luke 5:20-24). Jesus will “judge the living and the dead,” (2 Timothy 4:1) and reward all deeds in the flesh (Revelation 22:11-12).

Some titles that uniquely belong to Jehovah (the formal name of God) in the  Old Testament are used for Jesus. For instance, “Redeemer” (Psalms 19:14; 78:35) is used for Jesus in the New Testament (Titus 2:13-14; Revelation 5:9). Jesus is called Emmanuel-“God with us” (Matthew 1:23).

Some actions that can be accomplished only by God are credited to Jesus. For instance, He created and sustains the universe (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17). He possesses attributes that only a deity can have: Eternality (John 8:58), Omnipresence (Matthew 18:20, 28:20), Omniscience (Matthew 16:21), and Omnipotence (Luke 7:13-15).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should distinguish between the biblical explanation of Christ being God (John 1:1-5, 14) and the opinion of people of other religions.

CONCLUSION: Christians should not only believe in the deity of Jesus but must be bold to proclaim and defend it scripturally.

QUESTIONS

  1. Give four  biblical pieces of evidence that Jesus is God.
  2. Explain three reasons Jesus is God.

ASSIGNMENT: Write out five things Jesus did in your life that no man can do. (2×5=10 Marks).

RCCG Sunday School Teacher Manual 18 August 2024 TOPIC: New Heaven, New Earth

OPENING PRAYER: Father, don’t let me pass away with this world; help me to live in the new heaven and earth.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” – 2 Peter 3:10 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Revelation 21:1-5 (KJV)

1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

In the days of Noah, the world was destroyed with water, but God has promised that He would no more destroy the world with a flood (Genesis 9:11). The end of the world, described in 2Peter 3:10 as the day of the Lord will occur after the final judgement by God (Revelation 20:7-10). This scripture reveals that the universe will be destroyed by fire. Therefore, believers should bear in mind that this present world will not last forever (Matthew 5:18).

LESSON AIM: To study the passing away of the present heaven and earth and the emergence of the new heaven and earth.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this lesson, students should be able to:

a. Understand the biblical truth about the passing away of the present heaven and the earth.

b. Understand also that there will be the emergence of a new heaven and earth.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated goals, the teacher:

a. Should explain to students that the existing world and heaven will pass away soon as indicated in the Bible.

b. Should also explain to the students that after the passage of the present heaven and the earth, there would be the emergence of a new earth and heaven.

c. Should explain the nature of the new heaven and earth and the requirements to live in the new heaven and earth.

d. The teacher should summarize, conclude, evaluate and give assignment to the students.

e. The teacher should allow the Assistant Teacher to conduct the class, take the closing prayer and mark the assignment while students should be allowed to make contributions and participate in class activities.

TEXT REVIEW: Revelation 21:1-5.

The Apostle John saw:

i. A new heaven and a new earth. Revelation 21:1.

ii. The first heaven and first earth had passed away. Revelation 21:1.

iii. A very beautiful holy city called the New Jerusalem. Revelation 21:2.

ACTIVITY: Mention any five things which Apostle John “HEARD” according to Revelation 21:3-4.

i. ————————————————————–
ii. —————————————————————
iii. ————————————————————-
iv. ————————————————————-
v. —————————————————————

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. THE PASSING AWAY OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH
  2. EMERGENCE OF THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH

1. THE PASSING AWAY OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH

i. The prophet Isaiah foretold the passing away of Heaven and Earth (Isaiah 34:4; 51:6).

ii. This refers to the physical Heaven and earth – the material world and all it contains – but not to the inhabitants of heaven and earth. To “pass away” is to disappear or be no more.

iii. The “heavens” in 2 Peter 3:10 refers to the physical universe – the stars, planets, and galaxies – which will be consumed by some kind of tremendous explosion, possibly a nuclear or atomic reaction that will consume and wipe out all matter as we know it.

iv. All the elements that make up the universe will be melted in the “fervent heat” (2 Peter 3:12).

v. This will also be a noisy event, described in different Bible versions as a “roar” (NIV), a “great noise” (KJV), a “loud noise” (CEV), and a “thunderous crash” (AMP). There will be no doubt as to what is happening.

vi. Everyone will see and hear it because we are also told that “the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.”

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: How should believers prepare for the day when the world and elements would melt in fire?

2. EMERGENCE OF THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH

i. In Revelation 21:1, John writes of a new heaven and a new earth in the eternal state, having seen that “the first heaven and the first earth had passed away” (Isaiah 65:17; 2 Peter 3:13).

ii. God will create a “new heaven and a new earth” which will include the “New Jerusalem” (Revelation 21:2), the capital city of Heaven, a place of perfect holiness, which will come down from heaven to the new earth.

iii. This is the city where the saints – those whose names were written in the “Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 13:8) – will live forever. Peter refers to this new creation as “the home of righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13).

PERSPECTIVE

Knowing that Heaven and earth will pass away gives us perspective in life.
i. This world is not our home. “We are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13).

ii. Jesus tells us to have the proper priorities (Matthew 6:19-20).

iii. Also Peter, after reminding us of the temporary nature of this world, says, “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.” (2 Peter 3:14).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class members should identify common spots or stains which could tarnish a believer’s life of holiness.

CONCLUSION: Believers should remain faithful to the end because there is the hope of eternal life with God beyond this present world.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Describe how the present heavens and earth will pass away.
  2. Will there be a new heaven and a new earth? Explain.

EVALUATION: What do you understand by the new heaven and the new earth?

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, help me to always be pure and holy.

ASSIGNMENT: List five (5) things you must be doing now in preparation for the new heaven and the new earth. (2×5=10 Marks).

19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.

LESSON OUTLINES:

UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT TRIBULATION
EVENTS IN DAYS OF GREAT TRIBULATION

#1 UNDERSTANDING THE GREAT TRIBULATION

i. The Great Tribulation is also called the time of Jacob’s (the nation-Israel) trouble (Jeremiah 30:7).

ii. The unbelieving Jews, the unsaved or backslidden Gentiles will be the candidates of the great tribulation.

iii. It will begin after the rapture of the Church and the revelation of the antichrist, the man of sin (2 Thessalonians 2:3-7).

iv. The time of the great tribulation is the “seventieth week” that is, the last week of the seventy weeks of Daniel.

v. The seventy weeks have three sections: the first seven weeks, the next sixty-two weeks, and the last week.

vi. There are seven days in one week. A day in the week represents one year. So the duration is seven years (Daniel 9:20-27).

vii. The first half of the last week (the first three and a half years) will be for the full physical manifestation of the antichrist, during which he shall make a covenant with Israel (Daniel 9:27).

viii. The second half of the last week (the last three and half years) will be a time of unprecedented trouble. “During the week” the antichrist shall break the covenant with Israel and practice the “abomination of desolation” in the temple (Daniel 11:36; Matthew 24:15-16).

ix. The last three and half years of the great tribulation will culminate in the second coming of Christ to reign on earth (Mark 13:24-26; 2 Thessalonians 2:8).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention the key points about the great tribulation according to the first outline.

#2 EVENTS IN DAYS OF GREAT TRIBULATION

The Great Tribulation will witness a series of significant but terrifying events.

These include:

Unprecedented religious persecution of those who missed the rapture (Matthew 24:21-22).
Unparalleled global religious deception (Matthew 24:24-28).
There shall be an untold global economic problem, in which only those who receive the mark of the Beast can buy or sell (Revelation 13:17-18).
Series of unrighteous and abominable religious practices (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4,10).
Intense temptation all over the world (Revelation 3:10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Mention the identities of the great tribulation according to lesson outline two.

CONCLUSION: Those who have received Christ as their Lord and personal Saviour and keep themselves holy till He comes at rapture shall be delivered (through rapture) from the days of the Great Tribulation. However, sinners and backsliders are faced with the danger of the Great tribulation. Beloved, are you truly saved from sins? Examine yourself today and be sure!

EVALUATION: Mention the identities of the great tribulation according to lesson outline two.

CLOSING PRAYER: Almighty Father, please don’t let me witness the calamity of the great tribulation.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention ten (10) events of the great tribulation period. (1X10=10 Marks).

LESSON INTRODUCTION

The translated word for “perilous” in 2 Timothy 3:1 is ‘chalepos’, which means troublesome, dangerous, fierce, dreadful, etc. The term, last days, refers to the period between Christ’s ascension into Heaven and His second coming. Perilous times constitute part of the last days. The ‘last days’ is not just a prophecy. It started from the days of  the Bible (1 John 2:18-19). The importance of the prophecy and warning against the perilous times cannot be over-emphasised because we are living in the fulfilment of these perilous times. The purpose of this study is to carefully consider the writing of Paul to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 on the things that characterise the Perilous Times and the position every believer in Christ should take.

LESSON AIM: To study the characteristics of the perilous times and some cautions for believers.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this lesson, students should be able to:

a. Understand the characteristics of the perilous times.
b. Discover some cautions for believers against the period.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. CHARACTERISTICS OF PERILOUS TIMES
  2. CAUTION FOR BELIEVERS

1. CHARACTERISTICS OF PERILOUS TIMES

According to Paul, the conduct of the people will reveal perilous times. These characteristics are indicated below:

iii. Boasters – expressing vain glory (Psalm 10:3).

iv. Proud – valuing themselves above all others (Proverbs 21:4).

v. Blasphemers – those who speak immorally of God and sacred things (Mark 3:29).

vi. Disobedient to parents- disrespecting and dishonouring parents both physically and spiritually (Romans 1:30).

vii. Unthankful – not appreciating God and others for good deeds (Romans 1:21).

viii. Unholy – not pleasing God (Jude 18).

ix. Lack of natural affection – no family affection and lack of tender love (2 Timothy 3:3, Romans 1:31).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Each student should mention one characteristic of the perilous times.

2. CAUTION FOR BELIEVERS

Scriptures admonish believers living in this ‘last days’ to

i. Turn away from all ungodly practices in order not to be caught in the web of the perilous times (2 Timothy 3:5).

ii. Receive the prophecies/warning and be conscious of it at all times.

iii. Separate from the company and fellowship of people with the characters above (2 Corinthians 6:14-17).

iv. Avoid all forms of carnality and false doctrines (Romans 8:6-7; Ephesians 4:14).

v. Be watchful and be prayerful to guard against deception and temptation to sin (Matthew 26:41; 2 Corinthians 2:11).

vi. Release ourselves to the Holy Spirit and be sensitive to His leading (James 4:7; Romans 8:14).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What roles can believers play to ensure they remain in the faith in this period?

CONCLUSION: This is a perilous time; every believer that wants to get to heaven must heed the warning, and be careful to live a separate life from the world and false brethren to please God.

QUESTIONS:

  1. What events will characterise the perilous times?
  2. What scriptural cautions are believers to adhere to during perilous times?

EVALUATION: What are the signs of perilous times and the cautions for the believers?

CLOSING PRAYER: Almighty God, please carry me on Your wings and do not let me perish in these perilous times.

Rahab: An Unlikely Ally: RCCG Sunday School Manual

TOPIC – Rahab: An Unlikely Ally

MEMORY VERSE: “By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.” – Hebrews 11:31 (KJV)

 BIBLE PASSAGE: Joshua 2:1-6, 12-13

Joshua 2:1-6:
2 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.

3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.

4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:

5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.

6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

Joshua 2:12-13:
12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:

13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

INTRODUCTION:
The story of rehab is one of the thought-provoking accounts in  the Bible. The occasion that projected her into the hall of fame is that of a great faith in the GOD of Israel whom she knew almost nothing about. She rose from being a harlot to a joint heir in the Abrahamic covenant and eventually got a space in the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). Her life gives us a deeper insight into what God can do with the life of every sinner who comes to Him.

  1. HER CHARACTER
  2. ACHIEVEMENTS AND LESSONS FROM HER LIFE

1. HER CHARACTER

Rehab, in Hebrew, means “wide.” She lived in the 12th century B.C. She was a canaanite harlot who lived in Jericho City (Joshua 2:5). She rented rooms to travelers and visitors who came into the city. This explains why the two spies sent by Joshua found lodging in our house.

Her character is that of a selfless woman who saved her household with a negotiation skills (Joshua 2:12-13). She knew what to do with the information at her disposal. Rahab asked the two Israel spies to swear by the Lord thereby showing her faith in the only true God. She was smart enough to know that her city would be overthrown. In her wisdom she joined herself to the winning side (Joshua 2:9-10).

2. ACHIEVEMENTS AND LESSONS FROM HER LIFE

ACHIEVEMENTS
She skillfully hid the spies to prevent the king of Jericho from capturing and executing them (Joshua 2:6). this act of kindness earned her salvation from destruction (Joshua 6:25). She believed all the stories about the God of Israel even without seeing them (Joshua 2:10)

Rahab was a skillful negotiator who selflessly made the spies swear to spare her and her household (Joshua 2:13). The book of Hebrews name her among Faith heroes in the Old Testament (Hebrews 11:31). James records her has been justified by works (James 2:25). Matthew list her in the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5)

LESSONS FROM HER LIFE
Rahab stepped out of her harlotry into faith in God. So, anyone can change from bad to good (Isaiah 1:18). We should show kindness to people, just as Rahab did to the spies (Galatians 6:10). She walked by Faith and not by sight (Joshua 2:9-12). We also are expected to walk by Faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). Just as she ensured the safety of her household (Joshua 2:18-21), every child of God should ensure the salvation of his/her family (Acts 16:31).
Furthermore, she was diligent enough to follow instructions (Joshua 2:18; 6:22-23). Likewise, believers must carefully follow the right instruction (Proverbs 4:13)

CONCLUSION
Rahab is a typical example of God’s transformative power do not write yourself or anyone off.

QUESTION

  1. Mention three characters that stood Rahab out.
  2. Identify three lessons that can be learnt from the life of Rahab.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: One business that every believer has been called to do is Evangelism (or witnessing (2 Corinthians 5:17-18). It is the act of preaching the gospel to share the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. In simple terms, evangelism on the go is to be busy, active, and innovative with the preaching of the gospel of Jesus. Different channels must be employed to reach the lost with the gospel of salvation. The preaching of the gospel is a serious business assigned to us by the Master. It must be consciously, consistently, and conscientiously done by all believers.

a. Understand that evangelism is the father’s business.
b. Understand that evangelism is also our business too.

TEACHING PLAN:
To attain the above-stated objectives:

A. Students should:
a. Take the opening prayer together.
b. Recite the memory verse.

LESSON OUTLINES:

THE FATHER’S BUSINESS
OUR BUSINESS TOO

#1 THE FATHER’S BUSINESS

i. The preaching of the gospel to the lost is so important that Jesus said He was specifically anointed by His Father for it (Luke 4:18).

ii. He also reiterated this point in Luke 4:43 when he said preaching the kingdom of God is a must for Him because that was why He was sent.

iii. God is so particular about the lost that Jesus said it is not His will that they perish (Matthew 18:14).

iv. Jesus also said He came to the world to save the lost (Matthew 18:11).
v. Jesus, in the parable of the lost sheep, depicts the importance of a soul when the shepherd left 99 sheep to go after one lost sheep – soul (Matthew 18:12).

vi. Speaking of how he must preach the gospel, Apostle Paul placed a curse on himself, if he failed to preach the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:16).

vii. He also boldly declared that he was sent to preach the gospel (1 Corinthians 1:17a).

viii. The value of a soul is so much that there is rejoicing in Heaven when one soul repents (Luke 15:7).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Every soul is precious to God. Explain.

#2 OUR BUSINESS TOO

The teacher should explain the significance of evangelism assignment to believers as indicated below:

IMPORTANCE

i. Preaching the gospel to the lost is a serious occupation Jesus handed to His followers when He gave the command to go in Mark 16:15.

ii. This kingdom business must be done with zeal and divine wisdom (John 4:34; Ecclesiastes 10:10).

iii. It is an all-time trade (Luke 9:60). There is no room for giving up in this occupation of witnessing Jesus (Acts 5:42).

STRATEGY
iv. As a good businessman, you must be strategic, creative and seize every opportunity to talk to people about Jesus (Acts 26:27-29; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

v. This business must be done sacrificially. It may not be convenient at times, but you must still go ahead and witness Jesus (2 Timothy 4:2).

vi. As a business is driven by focus, the goal of evangelism is to make Jesus known, and win souls for Him (1 Corinthians 2:2; Romans 1:14-15).

vii. Business owners attract people to themselves; so must you live in such a way that everything you do preaches Jesus to others; live evangelism (Galatians 2:20; 1 Corinthians 11:1).

viii. This business must flourish in your hand as you continue to witness Christ to lost souls (Acts 8:5-6; Daniel 12:3).

ix. A successful business goes beyond a generation. In the same vein, the witness of Christ must go to the next generation (2 Timothy 1:5; 2:2).

x. The God factor is key for a successful business; therefore, intensive prayer is needed for evangelism.

FOCUS

xi. The trademark of this business is Jesus; who is the sole message (Colossians 1:27-28).

URGENCY
xii. Time is of the essence in business, do not delay to preach Jesus to the lost (John 4:35).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Why should the following elements/tools be considered very necessary in preaching the gospel?

a. Prayer.
b. Jesus Christ.
c. Time (urgency).

CONCLUSION: Evangelism is a serious kingdom business. Be actively involved.

QUESTIONS

Mention four ways evangelism is the Father’s business.
In three ways, relate conventional business with the business of evangelising.
EVALUATION: How important is the preaching of the gospel to God and believers?

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, please help Your children to be fully involved in the preaching of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

ASSIGNMENT: Identify five factors that can make evangelism effective (2×5=10 marks).

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Kings 11:1-6.
[1]But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites;
[2]Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.
[3]And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
[4]For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
[5]For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
[6]And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father.

MEMORY VERSE: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11.

INTRODUCTION: Destiny is God’s purpose for a man’s life. It is a divinely pre-planned destination. It is the totality of God’s counsel for a person and what He has decided concerning a person even before conception (Jeremiah 1:5). As good as it is, at several points in life, it still depends on one’s attitude and agreement with God. God has a prepared destination for us and we must surrender totally to Him to avoid destiny destroyers that may want to scuttle God’s plan for our lives.

OUTLINES:
1. DESTINY DESTROYERS
2. BIBLICAL INSTANCES

1. DESTINY DESTROYERS

Some destiny destroyers are mentioned below.
1. Ignorance: This is a destiny destroyer (Hosea 4:6). If we are aware of our destiny, we shall be free, focused, and fulfiled. Failure to do so may lead to destruction (John 8:32).
2. Pursuit Of Vanity: Solomon pursued so much vanity until he became a complete backslider. The privileges of wealth and lack of self-control ruined his destiny (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11).
3. Lack Of Faith: This is also a destiny destroyer (1Timothy 1:19).
4. Pride: Pride is excessive self-esteem. It is when you are filled with an exciting sense of credit due to yourself. Pride is a sin and it leads to loss and destruction (James 4:6).
5. Sinful Lifestyles: Sins not confessed and forsaken are dangerous because they provoke God to anger. A man who is living in sin cannot fulfil his destiny or attain the eternal destination which God has promised (1 John 3:4; Romans 3:23).
6. Anger: Uncontrolled emotional outburst has led many people out of God’s purpose for their lives (Ecclesiastes 7:9; Proverbs 29:22).
7. Laziness: This will make an idle person perpetually under the industrious person. (Proverbs 12:24).
8. Prayerlessness: It can cause the enemy to take advantage of a man’s destiny (Matt.13:25).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention some of the things people are engaged in that are capable of destroying their destinies.

#2 BIBLICAL INSTANCES

There are cases of people who, by one means or the other, had their destinies destroyed. They include Solomon (1Kings 11:1-11), Samson (Judges 16:6-18), Judas Iscariot (Matthew 27:3-5), Demas (2Timothy 4:10), Gehazi (2 Kings 5:20-27), Reuben (Genesis 49:3-4), Achan (Joshua 7:24-25).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Mention why you think some people are bent on destroying their own destinies e.g smokers.

CONCLUSION: Run away from destiny destroyers and make up your mind to live a life that will enhance the fulfilment of your destiny.

QUESTIONS:
* Mention five destiny destroyers that you know.
* Identify four cases of people whose destinies were destroyed as found in the bible

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five people in the Bible whose destinies were destroyed and the cause. (2×5=10 marks).

MEMORY VERSE: “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” – Acts 11:26 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 7:21-23 (KJV)

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The Christian faith is the experience of daily living in a dynamic and new personal relationship with God (Romans 10:9-10; John 1:11-13). The very term “Christian” was coined in the city of Antioch as a way to identify the first followers of Christ (Acts 11:26). The first disciples were so much like Jesus that they were called little Christs by their detractors. It is unfortunate that nowadays, some people have made Christianity represent an ideology or a social class rather than a lifestyle of obedience to God. Today, there are two shades of Christianity: Cultural Christianity and Biblical Christianity.

LESSON AIM: To study what cultural Christianity is and some of its identification marks.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Understand who cultural Christians are.
b. Identify some marks of cultural Christianity.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objective, the teacher could plan the lesson as follows:

a. The students should be allowed to take the opening prayer, memory verse, and Bible passage. They should participate in class activities, and do their assignments.
b. The Assistant Teacher should take the lesson introduction.
c. The Teacher should explain the lesson outline, summarize, conclude, evaluate the lesson, and give an assignment.

TEXT REVIEW: Matthew 7:21-23.

A. The teacher should identify five great works in the passage above that will attract no value before Christ and state why.
i. …………………………………………………………
ii. ………………………………………………………
iii. ………………………………………………………
iv. ………………………………………………………
v. ……….. ……………………………………………

TEACHING METHOD: The teacher should apply the lecture and discussion teaching methods.

TIME MANAGEMENT: The teacher should share the outline’s time equally between the two lesson outlines.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. CULTURAL CHRISTIANITY DESCRIBED
  2. IDENTIFICATION MARKS

1. CULTURAL CHRISTIANITY DESCRIBED

Cultural Christians are nominal believers who superficially identify themselves as “Christians” but do not truly adhere to the tenets of the Christian faith (Matthew 15:8). ii. They wear the label “Christian” without personal conviction that Jesus is Lord (2 Timothy 3:5).
iii. Cultural Christianity is more social than spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:14-15).
iv. A cultural Christian identifies with certain aspects of Christianity, such as the good works of Jesus (John 6:26-27), but rejects the spiritual aspects required to be a biblically defined Christian (Romans 8:5).
v. Some people consider themselves Christians because of family background, charity giving, place of residence, Christian name or title, churchgoing or social environment.
vi. Others identify as Christians as a way of declaring a religious affiliation.
vii. Cultural Christianity is not true Christianity.
There was no such thing as cultural Christianity in the days of the early church.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should differentiate between true Christians and cultural Christians.

2. IDENTIFICATION MARKS

The following are some identifying marks of cultural Christians:

  1. They deny the inspiration of Scripture or parts of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21).
  2. They ignore or downplay true repentance as the first step toward knowing God (Matthew 4:17; Acts 2:38).
  3. They focus on Jesus’ love and acceptance to the exclusion of His teaching on hell, obedience, and self-sacrifice (Mark 9:43; Luke 12:5).
  4. They tolerate or even celebrate ongoing sin while claiming to know God (1 Corinthians 5:1-2).
  5. They redefine scriptural truths to accommodate culture (Numbers 23:19).
  6. Claiming God’s promises while ignoring the requirements included with them (Psalm 50:16).
  7. They deny or minimise Jesus’ claim that He is the only way to God (John 14:6).
  8. They perform enough religious activity to gain a sense of well-being without a true devotion to Jesus (Romans 8:9).
  9. They see protection and blessing as goals to be achieved, rather than by-products of a love relationship with God (Mark 12:30).
  10. They are lukewarm and choose the church to attend based on any or all of the above (Revelation 3:15-17).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Mention what true Christians can do to help cultural Christians.

CONCLUSION: Jesus’ warning in Matthew 7:21-23 should be a wake-up call to cultural Christians.

QUESTIONS

  1. Describe cultural Christians in two sentences.
  2. Mention four ways to identify a cultural Christian.

EVALUATION: Who is a cultural Christian?

CLOSING PRAYER: Almighty Father, please heal all cultural Christians in Jesus’ name.

ASSIGNMENT: Write five differences between a true Christian and a cultural Christian. (2×5=10 marks).

Natural Disasters. RCCG Sunday School Manual

TOPIC: Natural Disasters (RCCG Sunday School Student Manual 2 June 2024)

MEMORY VERSE: “For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” – Matthew 24:7(KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 24:6-8 (KJV)

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

INTRODUCTION:

Natural disasters challenge the Christian belief that God is good. The enormous loss of lives and properties resulting from pandemics, earthquakes, floods, etc, is terrible and tragic. Our grief and even our anger are human, but no one grieves more than the Lord Himself (Hebrews 4:15). Christ is moved by the afflictions we suffer and even weeps over our pains (John. 11:35). Could the God who loves us also be the one to destroy us? How do we reconcile the mercy of God in Christ with His permission for natural disasters?

LESSON OUTLINES:

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
WHY GOD ALLOWS IT
1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Natural disasters are catastrophic events with atmospheric, geological, or hydrological origins. It is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; examples include firestorms, dust storms, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and other geological processes. A natural disaster can cause loss of lives or damage properties and typically leaves some economic damages in its wake, the severity of which depends on the affected population’s resilience or the infrastructure available (Luke 21:11).

God created the whole universe and the laws of nature (Genesis 1:1). Most natural disasters are a result of these laws at work. For instance, hurricanes, typhoons, and tornados are the results of divergent weather patterns colliding. Earthquakes are the result of the earth’s plate structure shifting. A tsunami is caused by an underwater earthquake.

Natural disasters differ from God’s use of natural forces, as recorded in the Bible. Natural disasters kill and maim indiscriminately. God’s acts of judgement recorded in the Bible were selective (Genesis 19:29-30). On one hand, natural disasters usually strike with little or no warning. On the other hand, God gave warnings to the wicked before using natural forces against them (Genesis 6:13; Matthew 24:38-39).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should recall instances of natural disasters they are aware of.

2. WHY GOD ALLOWS IT

It is distressing that natural disasters are often termed “acts of God” while no “credit” is given to God for years, decades, or even centuries of peace and stability.

However, generally, God allows natural disasters so as:
i. To serve as a warning for unbelievers. Disasters are warnings, and unbelievers often turn to God for the first time when they face a tornado or an earthquake (Revelation 11:13).
ii. To remind us that even nature was affected by sin. Natural disasters remind us that nature, while beautiful, is broken and cursed (Genesis 3:17-18).
iii. To establish God’s supremacy over man. Some disasters give no warning even with all the science and technology a country can afford to put in place (Psalms 115:3).
iv. To indicate the beginning of the last days. They are signs of the end times (Matthew 24:3, 7).
v. To allow cause and effect to operate independently. Some natural disasters are a result of man’s abuse and damage to the natural environment (Ecclesiastes 7:29).
vi. To allow believers to demonstrate God’s love to humanity by helping, ministering, counselling, praying, and leading people to the saving faith in Christ (Acts 11:28-30; Galatians 6:10).
vii. To establish God’s judgement upon the wicked (Genesis 18:20; 19:24-25).

CONCLUSION: God can, and does, bring great good out of terrible tragedies (Romans 8:28).

QUESTIONS:

Describe the term ‘natural disaster’
Why does God allow ‘natural disasters’?
ASSIGNMENT: Identify five ways the church can help those affected by natural disasters. (2×5=10 marks)

INTRODUCTION:

Depression is misunderstood by many, and it often carries a stigma. It can distort one’s perception of reality or make one doubt his/her judgement. Only those who have gone through depression can comprehend how terrible the experience can be. Finding healing is possible but may take time. Some people may give the wrong advice because they do not understand depression. Therefore, it is important to find out what is and is not true about depression and tips that can help people going through it.

LESSON OUTLINES:

MISCONCEPTION VS REALITY
HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE DEPRESSED
1. MISCONCEPTION VS REALITY

Misconception: Depression is not real.
Reality: Depression is a real illness that impacts the brain’s ability to function as it should.
Misconception: Depression is a sin. Being depressed means you are failing to trust God.
Reality: Depression is a mental illness, not a sin.
Misconception: Depression will go away if you pray hard enough or have enough faith.
Reality: Depression is a serious illness that usually needs prayer plus treatment. God gave doctors and mental health professionals the understanding and skills to help those who are suffering.
Misconception: Depression is a punishment from God. If you feel depressed, it is because you have not confessed your sins (John 9:1-3).

Reality: Depression is not the fault of the person who is suffering. It is a trial that can redefine someone’s faith, but it is not a punishment for sin.
Misconception: People with depression are unstable and cannot be trusted with church leadership or responsibilities.

Reality: Depression and other mental illnesses do not disqualify people from leadership or church roles except during times of ‘deep depression.’ The experience can give people compassion or perspective in a way that makes them good leaders (1 Samuel 30:1-10).
Misconception: It is shameful to discuss mental illness openly.
Reality: The church community should be a safe environment for people to discuss mental health without prejudice.
Misconception: You can always tell if someone is depressed by outward appearances or actions.
Reality: You cannot always tell that someone is depressed from how they look or act. Some depressed people are so skilled at hiding their conditions that you would never know.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why is it that some people with mental health issues shy away from discussing it?

2. HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE DEPRESSED

These are some helpful tips if you are a Christian going through depression or if you know someone who is:

God cares about your state (Hebrews 4:15; 1 Peter 5:7).
Like biblical patriarchs, you are not alone (Jeremiah 20:7-11; 1 Kings 19:4-6; Psalm 42:9).
God’s love and faithfulness never depend on you. His love for us is solely dependent on His character, grace, and goodness (Lamentations 3:21-23).
God saves and delivers from afflictions (Psalm 34:18-19).
God can bring good even out of something as bad as depression (Romans 8:28).
There is still hope. Your low thoughts and emotions are not the truth (Job 14:7-9; Romans 8:35-39).
You can find strength by leaning on community (Romans 15:1).
Your friends and family can help you by praying and being there for you.
It is not a sin to seek professional help for depression as a Christian (Luke 5:31).
Do not allow anything to separate you from God (Romans 8:38-39; Hebrews 12:2).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Why do we have cases of people committing suicide as a result of depression despite the available helpful tips around?

CONCLUSION: With God’s love and support from the people around you, you can get through depression.

QUESTIONS

Debunk three misconceptions about depression.
Mention four helpful tips for the depressed.

ASSIGNMENT: Identify people around you who are going through depression and minister to them (No marks).

TOPIC: Depression

MEMORY VERSE: “And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.” – Genesis 30:1 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Kings 19:1-4

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

INTRODUCTION:

Depression is a word from the Latin verb “deprimere,” meaning to press down. It is an emotional response triggered by circumstances beyond one’s mental stability. It is a mental health illness or mood disorder where one experiences unusual persistent sadness. As the saying goes, there is no health without mental health. This shows that other aspects of health such as physical, financial, spiritual, and social can also take a downward spiral due to a depressive illness. Hence, it is important to educate ourselves on the causes, symptoms, and the way out of depression.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES AND CAUSES
  2. PREVENTION OF DEPRESSION

1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES AND CAUSES

Depression is often viewed as a persistent feeling of sadness (Romans 8:20-22). There are many biblical examples of men of God who struggled with sadness, even to the point of depression. David, a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), did not gloss over his sadness; he expressed it to God (Psalms 56:8). Both Moses (Numbers 11:15) and Elijah (1 Kings 19:3-5), two heroes of the faith, confessed to God that they preferred to die than live in their current reality.

Depression can be triggered by negative events such as the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, loss of a relationship, loss of a pet, economic crises, financial instability, unpleasant circumstances, etc (1 Samuel 1:6-7; Nehemiah 2:2). Biologically, depression manifests when some chemical changes occur in the human brain due to persistent uncontrollable sad feelings. This causes changes in the levels of some hormones in the brain which include cortisol, adrenaline, and dopamine. These changes affect multiple organs in the body including the brain leading to a gross reduction in human productivity and health.

Consequently, symptoms of depression include a depressed mood or feeling of sadness, constant tiredness, reduced or lost interest in previously enjoyable activities, forgetfulness, hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts, and being overly suspicious of people or events. Excessive complaints of body pains, loss of appetite, loss of interest in sex, loss of sleep, and poor attention can also signal a depressive illness.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Can a true Christian suffer depression?

2. PREVENTION OF DEPRESSION

Some people use inadequate coping mechanisms for this mood disorder. They may engage in the abuse of alcohol, smoking, absenteeism, spouse battery, over-spirituality, over-socialisation, etc. These maladaptive coping mechanisms give short-term relief but only worsen the symptoms and eventually lead to a severe mental illness.

To prevent depression believers should note the following, in addition to seeking medical or professional interventions:

  1. A Christian is supposed to be filled with joy (Romans 15:13). Joy is something the Holy Spirit produces in the life of a follower of Jesus Christ (Galatians 5:22; 1 Thessalonians 1:6).
  2. God will never leave His own (Deuteronomy 31:8).
  3. God will strengthen and uphold His children regardless of the situation (Isaiah 41:10).
  4. God hears our cry (Psalms 40:1-3).
  5. God is near to the broken-hearted (Psalms 34:18-19; Matthew 11:28-30).

We should also develop positive attitudes; understand our mental limits; build problem-solving skills, resilience skills, and good communication skills.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Can a Christian seek medical assistance to depression? Discuss.

CONCLUSION: Depression contributes to poor personal, family, community, and economic growth. It can be difficult to recognise but once any of the symptoms are noticed, it is important to seek care immediately.

MEMORY VERSE: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” – Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 17:33-37 (KJV)

33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Memories are events or experiences that happened in the past. God designed us each with memory – the capacity and capability of the human brain to store and retrieve past events. The human memory is utilised continuously moment-by-moment to record what is going on in our lives even things done secretly. This lesson shall highlight some facts about human memory and how believers should manage their memories.

LESSON AIM: The teacher should allow the students to review the previous week’s lesson with particular attention to the outline.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES

through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Discover some facts about human memory.
b. Understand some tips on how to manage human memory.

TEACHING PLAN: through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Discover some facts about human memory.
b. Understand some tips on how to manage human memory.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Samuel 17:33-34.

The teacher should identify five (5) roles which “recall” played in the planned encounter with Goliath as indicated in the Bible passage.

i. ………………………………..
ii. …………………………………
iii. ……………………………….
iv. ……………………………….
v. …………………………………

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. FACTS ABOUT HUMAN MEMORY
  2. MANAGING OUR MEMORIES

1. FACTS ABOUT HUMAN MEMORY

The human memory is involved in virtually almost what we do as humans:

  1. It records what is ongoing in our lives, even mental images in our sleep (Genesis 41:1-8). Without it, we have no identity and purpose, and life will be meaningless.
  2. It provides us with a source of the direction of what to do and how to do it through experience (1 Samuel 17: 33-37).
  3. The capacity of the human brain (memory) is believed to be approximately 2.5 million gigabytes or 2,500 terabytes (2.5 petabytes). This storage device can store up to 300 years of continually recorded non-stop television video.
  4. Unlike a hard disk drive, you cannot delete memory from your brain. If you stop thinking about certain memories and focus on others, they will slowly recede into the background.
Some memories may not recede but are inaccessible, they are not entirely gone and could potentially be retrieved (Daniel 4:33-34, 36).
  5. Memories are spiritual and part of our soul for instance; the martyrs could still recall how they were treated on earth (Revelation 6:9-10).
  6. The entire body will decay in death but the memory and soul will remain.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should recall any mighty act of God in their lives.

2. MANAGING OUR MEMORIES

Our memories can be pleasant or unpleasant which may be triggered by something we have seen or heard; or will just appear in our mind without a ‘trigger.’ However, as believers:

  1. We should know what to dwell on and what to let go of (Philippians 4:8).
  2. We should treasure things that are inspiring in our hearts. Be it prophecies, revelation from the scriptures, and so on. One of the ways of doing this is by taking notes (Luke 2:19).
  3. We should recall what the Lord has done; how he drew us unto repentance and salvation, His faithfulness, kindness, and so on (Ephesians 2:11-13). This, in turn, provokes worship that glorifies God and brings strength, courage, hope, and faith when we struggle with afflictions and oppositions (Psalm 8:1-4; 1 Samuel 17:36-37).
  4. We should recall others in our prayers, be they unsaved family members, co-workers, or friends in tough situations (2 Timothy 1:3-5; Hebrews 13:3).
  5. The painful memories we recall should be handed over to our Saviour who can pour out love and comfort, to restore our broken hearts (Psalm 116:3-5; Hebrews 4:15).
  6. Everyone will one day be just “a memory.” We should live in such a way that we would leave the stage with a good memory of ourselves to encourage and inspire others after our death (Proverbs 10:7; Psalm 112:6).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss the effective ways to handle our memory to ensure that it works to glorify God only.

CONCLUSION: Humans have the power to store a vast amount of experiences throughout their lives, but as believers, we should know which to recall or to let go, to the glory of God.

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention four facts about human memory.
  2. Identify four ways of managing our memories

EVALUATION:
i. Mention four (4) things about human memory?
ii. Identify four ways of managing Human memory.

CLOSING PRAYER: O God, help me to get rid of bad memories in the name of Jesus.

ASSIGNMENT: Recollect five events or experiences that you are grateful to God about (No marks).

Love Language In Marriage. RCCG Sunday School Student Manual

TOPIC: Love Language In Marriage

MEMORY VERSE: “By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.” – Proverbs 25:15 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 2:18-25 (KJV) (RCCG Sunday School Student Manual 21 April 2024)

18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

INTRODUCTION:

Many marriages are needlessly failing because the marriage partners have a lack of knowledge regarding relationship dynamics (Hosea 4:6). Most couples, sadly to say, are ignorant on purpose. In this study, we will look at the scriptural principles and the love language that should characterise our marital relationships.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES GUIDING MARRIAGE
  2. UNDERSTANDING THE ‘‘LOVE LANGUAGE’’

1 SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES GUIDING MARRIAGE

Couples in marriage should understand that the image of God is best expressed in the combination of male and female (Genesis 1:27). The God-designed difference between male and female is to be accepted as complementary, not competitive (Genesis 2:18). Marriage is a divine, not human institution (Genesis 2:21-23). It is to be a relationship of companionship, completion, and communion (Genesis 2:25; Matthew 19:5). Marriage was designed by God to be a permanent, mutual, covenant relationship (Matthew 19:6). God’s intent is for marriage to be an inestimable source of joy and fulfilment (Proverbs 18:22). In fact, marriage is a major part of God’s plan to bring redemption to the human race (Genesis 22:18). The seed of the marriage relationship provided the vehicle for the incarnation of the Saviour, Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:15; Ephesians 5:31-32).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss the human principles that have been introduced into marriage today but which were not at the beginning.

2. UNDERSTANDING THE ‘‘LOVE LANGUAGE’’

Many problems in marriage, usually, occur due to the inability of the partners to understand each other’s love language. Love language is an expression that makes you or your partner feel loved.

There are five primary love languages. They are:

  1. Quality Time. Spending time with each other and talking without interruptions, going out and about, having fun together, celebrating birthdays and wedding anniversaries, etc. Let the courtship experience continue (Genesis 26:8).
  2. Acts of Service. Do things you know your spouse will like you to do. For example; cooking meals, helping each other, especially in household chores, etc. (Ecclesiastes 4:9).
  3. Exchange of Gifts. Express your love for each other through giving/receiving gifts no matter how small (1 Samuel 1:5).
  4. Words of Affirmation. Couples must be consistent in saying ‘I love you,’ ‘I am sorry’ ‘Thank you’ ‘You look nice in that dress,’ etc. to each other (Songs of Solomon 4:1, 7).
  5. Physical Touching: This is a way of communicating emotional love, e.g. holding hands, kissing, pecking, embracing, patting, necking, nibbling, sitting close to each other, etc. (Songs of Solomon 1:2).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Which of the points above are commonly absent as marriages get older? How can a spouse recover it/them?

CONCLUSION: Couples should discover and express to each other what ‘their’ primary love language is and not just say them but do them!

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention at least three scriptural principles of marriage.
  2. Identify the primary love languages needed in marriage.

ASSIGNMENT: State five things you will start/continue to do for your spouse to keep him/her perpetually happy (2×5=10 marks).

MEMORY VERSE: “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” – Mark 3:25 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 25:24-34 (KJV) (RCCG Sunday School Student Manual 14 April 2024)

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

INTRODUCTION:

Families are the bedrock of society. When families fall apart, society falls into social and cultural decline. The plan of God for homes is for them to remain united in body and spirit (Psalms 133:1). A broken home is a family in which the parents are separated or divorced. So many children and estranged partners have suffered the consequences of a broken home. This has caused society and the church a lot of unrest. It is, therefore, necessary to examine the causes of broken homes and their remedy.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. CAUSES OF BROKEN HOMES
  2. EFFECTS AND REMEDY FOR BROKEN HOMES

1. CAUSES OF BROKEN HOMES
Some factors that bring about a broken home are stated below.

  1. Cultural shift – a decline of religion and morality (2 Timothy 3:1-5; Colossians 2:8).
  2. A wrong choice in marriage (Proverbs 21:9; Proverbs 19:13).
  3. The negative influence of parents, friends, etc. (Genesis 2:24; Proverbs 13:20).
  4. Lack of genuine sacrificial love (1 John 3:16; Romans 5: 7-8).
  5. Communication breakdown (Matthew 5:37).
  6. Sexual unfaithfulness between a couple (Hebrews 13: 4).
  7. Stinginess, meanness, or poor economic planning (1 Timothy 6:10).
  8. Preference for a child over another child (siblings) Genesis 25:28.
  9. Undue attachment to job or other things than the family (Psalms 127:2).
  10. Worldly pleasures (1 John 2: 15).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Discuss the role which the husband, wife and children must play to prevent a broken home.

2. EFFECTS AND REMEDY FOR BROKEN HOMES

Some effects of a broken home include:

  1. Husbands abandon spouses and children.
  2. Wives walk out of the marriage.
  3. Either or both live alone or with strange fellows.
  4. Children suffer emotional stress arising from abandonment.
  5. Children may lose interest in relationships and life in general
  6. Children are likely to exhibit anti-social behaviours.
  7. Complete and unified parental love is lacking.
  8. Society witnesses an increase in crime rate.

Those who suffer the pains of broken homes can apply the following solutions:

  1. Embrace the love of Jesus through salvation. (Romans 5:8).
  2. Commit everything to God in prayer. He is greater than any difficulty. (Psalms 50: 15; Jeremiah 32:27).
  3. Ask God to make you a better person in the present circumstances. (Psalms 51:10).
  4. Seek the help of other Christians. (Proverbs 11:14).
  5. Seek Professional help and counsel.
  6. Learn to forgive and seek reconciliation or restoration. (Ephesians 4:32; Romans 12:18; Isaiah 57:18)
  7. Be patient to meet your spouse at their point of need. (Ecclesiastes 7:8; 1 Corinthians 7:1).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Discuss other things which you have heard, seen or experienced which have helped to secure an exemplary Christian home.

CONCLUSION: Broken homes can be described as ‘broken lives.’ Do all you can to make your family strong and united.

QUESTIONS:

  1. What is a broken home’?
  2. How can it be eliminated?

ASSIGNMENT: State five differences between a broken home and a united home (2×5=10 marks).

Marriage Status. RCCG Sunday School Student Manual

MEMORY VERSE: “Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” – Ephesians 5:33 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 5:22-29

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

INTRODUCTION:

Marriage is a state of being united as man and woman in a consensual and contractual relationship recognised by law. According to the Bible, marriage is a honourable institution (Hebrews 13:4) and a lifetime commitment (Matthew 19:6). However, it is generally observed that some marriages are in a state of coma or completely dead, while some merely exist. What is the status of your marriage as a believer? It is interesting to know that God desires that we all have living marriages.

LESSON OUTLINES:

MARRIAGE STATUS
CHARACTERISTICS OF A LIVING MARRIAGE
1. MARRIAGE STATUS

‘Marriage in coma’: This is a marriage in which neither of the spouses feels the presence of the other nor spends quality time together thereby, allowing bitterness and resentment to spring up in their hearts (Hebrews 12:15). The couple refuses to keep communication lines open. They dwell more on each other’s weaknesses or offenses (1Samuel 25:25-26). In this kind of marriage, there is selfishness and the partners may be inconsiderate (Philippians 2:3).

‘Dead marriage’: In this kind of marriage, there are no traces of true love. Even if they are living under the same roof, there may not be emotional attachment/attraction or genuine concern for each other’s wellbeing. They are more like familiar strangers or two people just cohabiting (1 Corinthians 3:3).

‘Living marriage’: This is a kind of marriage in which the couple dwells together in understanding, patience, sacrifices, love, and enjoys the company of each other (Genesis 26:8). Over time they have learned to manage their weaknesses or excesses.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should contrast between the “Coma’’ marriage and “Dead’’ marriage.

2 CHARACTERISTICS OF A LIVING MARRIAGE

A living marriage is a function of mutual fulfilment derived from a selfless commitment to the marital union. This can only be achieved by the grace of God, determination, and deliberate efforts of both partners. Here are some characteristics of a living marriage:
i. The Fear of God: The couple subjects their decisions to the standard of God’s word and operates their home based on the fear and love of God. (Genesis 18:19; Isaiah 8:13).
ii. Love: The love between such a couple transcends ‘eros’ (sexual intimacy). It is God’s kind of love that is unconditional and sacrificial (1 Corinthians 13:4-8; Ephesians 5:24-25). A couple in a living marriage is prepared to ‘weather the storm’ throughout their lifetime.
iii. Mutual support: This couple decides to support each other through ‘thick and thin’ (Galatians 6:2).
iv. Forgiveness: Conflicts are inevitable, and sometimes healthy because it promotes a better understanding. The couple is quick to ask for forgiveness as well as to grant it (Ephesians 4:32).
v. Kindness: They maintain a great habit of being kind and understanding each other (Romans 12:10).
vi. Commitment: They show a keen interest in the progress of each other’s careers, ministry, business, extended families, etc. They share each other’s views and visions (Philippians 2:4).
vii. Appreciation: They develop the attitude of gratitude and celebrate each other (Philippians 2:3).
viii. Acceptance: They do not dwell on the weakness of each other but prayerfully work on each other and trust God for positive changes (Ephesians 4:2).
ix. Time: They spend quality time together in understanding and knowing each other (Genesis 26:8; Ecclesiastes 9:9).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss the enemies of a living marriage.

CONCLUSION: In a living marriage, the human ego is reduced to the barest minimum to enjoy marital bliss.

QUESTIONS:

Describe at least three states of some marriages.
Mention four characteristics of a living marriage.
ASSIGNMENT: Mention any five (5) factors that can make a “living marriage” status difficult to attain. (2X5=10 Marks).

O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Thy friendship suits me well,
Both young and old will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School.
O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?

Christianity and Governance. RCCG Sunday School Student Manual

TOPIC: Christianity And Governance

MEMORY VERSE: “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.” – Revelation 5:10 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 13:1-6 (KJV) (RCCG Sunday School Student Manual 17 March 2024)

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The opinion held by some Christians that if they are going to follow Christ, they must be quiet and withdrawn from things happening on the earth, negates the will of God as spelled out in the Scripture. Christ has called believers unto a life of influence, control, and dominion (Psalms 8:6). They are to take charge (Matthew 5:15-16) and the issue of governance is no exception. As the light of the world, they are to dispel the darkness of unrighteousness, sycophancy, etc. which are the order of the day, in present-day governance systems of the world.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. THE VIEW OF GOD ON GOVERNANCE
  2. CHRISTIANS SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN GOVERNANCE

1. THE VIEW OF GOD ON GOVERNANCE

God instituted governance. It is not a secular concept or people’s creation. God is the ultimate “Governor” who delegates the function to humans (Psalms 22:28; Daniel 4:34). It is one of the purposes for which the spirit-being called ‘man’ was created (Genesis 1:26). It is a calling and manifestation of the gift of the Holy Spirit (1Corinthians 12:28). It is a tool for orderliness and sanity (1Corinthians 14:40; Exodus 18:21). It is instituted by God for administration, justice and general welfare of citizens (1Timothy 2:2). Like marriage, it is instituted by God and should be submitted to (Mark.12:17; Romans 13:1-2). Governance is servanthood. It is a means of serving the governed (Matthew 20:25-28). Governance is a ministry and governors are ministers of God (Romans 13:3-4).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: What do you think government can do to deliver more services to the citizens?

2. CHRISTIANS SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN GOVERNANCE

Christians need to be involved in governance because:

  1. It is part of our inherent design as believers (Genesis 1:26; Matthew 5:15-16).
  2. We are to effect positive and lasting change (Genesis 41:46-49; 53-57).
  3. It stands out the nation among other nations (Proverbs 14:34).
  4. We shall make righteous laws and decrees that lead to national progress (Mark 6:27; Luke. 2:1).
  5. It is obeying God’s ordinance of submission to authority (Hebrews 13:17, 1 Peter 2:13-14).
  6. It brings blessings and breakthroughsto the nation and fulfilment for her citizenry (Proverbs 11:10).
  7. Governance is God’s institution and the word of God. So, people of God should not be kept out of God’s institution (Romans 13:1-6).
  8. We must avoid paying the costly price of bad leadership (2 Samuel 23:3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Mention the dangers of not participating in politics.

CONCLUSION: Believers should take their rightful place in deciding the destiny of their nations and turn the kingdom of this world into the kingdom of our God which is God’s divine mandate for us.

QUESTIONS:

  1. What is God’s view on governance?
  2. Mention five (5) reasons Christians should be involved in governance.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention any five (5) issues that discourage some believers from getting involved in governance. (2X5=10 Marks).

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 6:12-13.

[12]All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
[13]Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
MEMORY VERSE: Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Philippians 4:5.

INTRODUCTION: To socialise simply means to talk to and do things with other people in a friendly way. There are various ways of socialising, ranging from relating with people in the immediate environment, to getting involved in governance and community development activities.
Christian socialisation cuts across recreation, social interaction, cultural activities, and political issues. While there may be diverse opinions on the extent of the involvement of Christians in social issues, it should be noted that moderation should be the watchword.

OUTLINES:
1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES OF SOCIALISATION
2. WORLDLY PERSPECTIVES VERSUS BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES
1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES OF SOCIALISATION
Jesus Christ and His disciples attended a wedding ceremony at Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-2). He dined with Zacchaeus in his house (Luke 19:5). He was a friend to the family of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha (Luke 10:38-42) and also paid them a condolence visit (John 11:33-35). He and His disciples also participated in the Feast of Passover (Mark 14:12-14). Apostle Paul interacted with diverse classes of people for the sake of the Gospel to win some (1 Corinthians 9:19-23). Daniel was involved in political administration in his days (Daniel 1:18-21; 6:1-3).
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should explore some other examples of social events in which God’s people participated in the Bible.

2. WORLDLY PERSPECTIVES VERSUS BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

Christians cannot live in isolation in this present world. However, we must know when and how to draw the line between worldly (sinful) and acceptable (holy) socialisations.
For instance, Christians are expected to recreate (1 Timothy 4:8) but visiting bar/beer joints and nightclubs for recreation is unacceptable. Christians should avoid participating or feasting at occasions where idols are celebrated (1 Corinthians 10:28).
Modernised carnivals with satanic undertones and other places where Christian integrity is questionable should also be avoided (1 Corinthians 8:10-11; 10:19-21).
Watching immoral movies, listening to/singing ungodly music, and wearing seductive dresses in the name of socialisation are also ungodly things Christians must avoid (1 Corinthians 8:8-11).
While getting involved in secular activities, Christians should watch out and abstain from things that can make them compromise their faith (Philippians 4:8).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should identify the inherent dangers of unguarded/reckless socialisations.
CONCLUSION: Whatsoever we do to socialise should be to the glory of God and the edification of the saints (1 Corinthians 10:31). Christians are to show moderation in social interactions.
QUESTIONS:
* Mention three biblical instances of socialisation.

* Distinguish between worldly and godly socialisations.
ASSIGNMENT: State five things believers can do to socialise without sinning(2×5=10 marks).

Physical Breakthrough. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

MEMORY VERSE: “And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.” – Genesis 26:22 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 26:1-6, 11-14 (KJV)

Genesis 26:1-6
1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

2 And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:

Genesis 26:11-14
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.

13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.

INTRODUCTION: Generally, a breakthrough is major progress such as great innovation or discovery that overcomes significant obstacles. In other words, it is overcoming something challenging and having an achievement. A breakthrough usually gives a miraculous result. Breakthrough is often associated with prosperity although it means different things to different people. We can, therefore, talk about physical (financial, material, scientific, academic, etc.) and spiritual breakthroughs.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. INSTANCES OF PHYSICAL BREAKTHROUGHS
  2. FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE

1. INSTANCES OF PHYSICAL BREAKTHROUGHS

Physical breakthroughs include but are not limited to wealth (financial and material), science, warfare (2 Samuel 23:15-16), and academics. There was an instance of four lepers who got an unimaginable and amazing breakthrough during famine and war (2 Kings 6:25; 7:8). Abraham laid the foundation of breakthroughs for generations after him (Genesis 18:18). Isaac got a breakthrough in Gerar; he became greater than Abraham his father and a whole nation envied him (Genesis 26:13-14). Jacob had an extraordinary ‘scientific’ breakthrough and increased exceedingly (Genesis 30:37-43). Through unprecedented sacrifices, Solomon had a ‘multidimensional’ breakthrough (2 Chronicles 1:6-12).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: From the above examples, does sowing/giving facilitate breakthroughs?

2. FROM NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE

Quite often, a breakthrough connotes a change in trend. One can experience a breakthrough from negative/unfavourable circumstances to positive/favourable conditions. Let us examine some biblical instances:

  1. Obededom: from apparent nothingness to unimaginable blessings (1 Chronicles 13:13-14).
  2. Jabez: from sorrow to success (1 Chronicles 4:9-10).
  3. Peter: from emptiness to abundance (Luke 5:4-7).
  4. The Widow of Zarephath: from hopelessness to miraculous supplies (1 Kings 17:10-16).
  5. Naaman: from affliction to wholeness (2 Kings 5:1-14).
  6. Elizabeth: from barrenness to fruitfulness (Luke 1:5-7, 57).
  7. The Widow of the prophet: from indebtedness to wealth (2 Kings 4:1-7).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What did these people do to experience breakthroughs?

CONCLUSION: There cannot be a physical breakthrough without divine intervention. Therefore, if you are expecting a breakthrough in any facet of your life, you must turn to God for help (Deuteronomy 8:18).

QUESTIONS:

  1. Describe breakthroughs with biblical instances.
  2. Discuss the trends of breakthroughs with examples.

ASSIGNMENT: Find out ten (10) illustrations of a breakthrough in the Bible with Bible passages. (1×10=10 marks).
