OPENING PRAYER: Almighty Father, we pray that You grant us the enabling strength to do justly, to love mercy and to be humble before You in Jesus’ name.

BIBLE PASSAGE: GENESIS 33:1-11

[1] And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

[2] And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.

[3] And he passed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times until he came near to his brother.

[4] And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

[5] And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.

[6]Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

[7]And Leah also with her children came near and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

[8] And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.

[9] And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.

[10] And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

[11] Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.

MEMORY VERSE: “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8.

INTRODUCTION

Simply put, restitution is the act of making right the wrong done against someone or an institution. God is a just God and He expects justice from everyone (Mic.6:8; Jer. 22:3). This is such a universal law of human relationships that even the world’s courts know that it is just and right to require that corrections be made for wrong actions of the past.

TEXT REVIEW:
i. Jacob had wronged his brother Esau on the account of the father’s blessings. He wept when he met his brother eventually. (Gen. 33:3-4).

ii. Jacob determined what should be appropriate to compensate his brother for the wrong doing. (Gen. 33:10).

iii. The items of compensation presented to Esau for restitution were: (Gen.32:13-15).
a. Two hundred (200) she goats.
b. Twenty (20) he goats.
c. Two hundred (200) ewes.
d. Twenty (20) rams.
e. Thirty (30) milk camels with their colts.
f. Forty (40) cows.
g. Ten (10) bulls.
h. Twenty (20) she asses.
i. Ten (10) foals.

iv. Although Esau declined to accept the compensation at first, he eventually accepted them after his brother urged him. (Gen. 33:11).

1. KINDS OF RESTITUTION

i. Question: What is restitution?
Answer: Act of making right the wrongs done against someone or an institution.
ii. Question: What are the kinds of restitution?
Answer: There are two kinds of restitution. These are:
a. Restitution of material loss.
b. Restitution of personal loss.
iii. Question: What are the differences between the two?
Answer: A. Material Loss: This has to do with compensation or reparation or reimbursement or repayment of money or its equivalent to the victim(s).
a. Question: Under what conditions could material loss occur?
Answer: i. Items/Money forcefully taken.
ii. Items/Money taken by false pretence/deception.
iii. Deliberate or accidental damages.
iv. Deliberate or accidental injuries/action.
b. Question: What do 1 Samuel 12:3 and Luke 19:8 say about restitution?
Answer: B. Personal Loss: i. This has to do with retaliation with others.
ii. The persons in the relationship deliberately or inadvertently injured the other person or inflict pains on the other person.
iii. The pain could be emotional or other non-material loss.
iv. It could be sinful act or hurtful actions.
v. It could emanate from choice (s) or preferences, priority, circumstances.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: It seems people do not like to restitute. Explore the possible reasons.

2. SATISFACTORY COMPENSATION

a) Satisfactory compensation can be given as restitution to the person who suffered loss instead of the actual thing.
b) This has to do with the estimated value as agreed by both parties.
c) Actual value may not be replaced but the person who suffered the loss should be satisfied with the value to be compensated.
d) Desire on the part of the one who suffers loss to be overcompensated is greed and covetousness.
e) Some guidelines/advice to borrowers and lenders:
i. Do not give out something on loan if you know you may not get exact back in the event of loss.
ii. Be careful to give out as loan things you consider priceless to you.
iii. Be careful not to borrow what you know you cannot replace in the event of loss.
f) Significance of restitution:
i. Clear conscience before God and man.
ii. Peace of mind.
iii. It can engender forgiveness from the one who was offended.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Apply Isaiah 24:2 to the lesson.
