Working away from home can be an enjoyable experience, but it can also pose certain challenges that are not faced by those who work in the comfort of their own homes.
However, these challenges can easily be dealt with through various lifestyle and workplace adjustments, so long as you plan ahead to make the most of your time away from home. Here are some tips to help you do just that!
#1 Check Communication Channels
Working away from home means being away not only physically, but also virtually. Check your communication channels to make sure you can be reached and contact someone if anything happens.
Use Skype or FaceTime to stay in touch with friends and family as well as workmates, and use text messages or phone calls to discuss urgent matters. If possible, try to find a coworking space where you can collaborate with others.

#2 Know Where You’re Supposed to Be
As tempting as it might be to work and live abroad, don’t forget that you’re still an employee of your company. Stay in touch with your superiors to make sure they’re aware of your location.
Additionally, staying in touch with friends and family back home provides comfort and a sense of stability when living in a foreign country.
New technology will feel overwhelming at first, but it’s worth it to invest in your comfort. Get yourself a comfortable chair, a desk that gives you some privacy, and become knowledgeable with your new software.
It’s all about doing what you can to make your space as much like home as possible. If you have a video chat set up on your computer or phone, call the people back home often so they don’t forget who you are.
Find places nearby where there are familiar smells or tastes that remind you of home–maybe a restaurant or pizza place–and take advantage of them when possible. Keep up with old friends by Skype video chat whenever possible so they don’t think you’ve disappeared off the face of the earth.
#4 Embrace the Unfamiliarity
Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Many workers in the professional world experience high levels of anxiety and stress when they work away from home. Consider adopting a new perspective to help combat these feelings.
Your job is to be an expert on your company’s mission set, not on its location. Consider it as a learning opportunity to branch out into new areas or make connections with colleagues you might never have met otherwise.
#5 Stay Out of Trouble
To work away from home, avoid breaking any laws and don’t do anything that you wouldn’t do at your home office. If in doubt, contact your company’s HR team or get advice on how to handle a specific situation by talking to other remote workers in the company.
#6 Keep Track of Your Time
Your productivity, while you’re working remotely, may be affected by the lack of daily structure that comes with being on the go. Make sure to log your time so you can account for this lost structure. For example, if you usually work 8 hours a day, but now only get 4 hours because of your current remote location, consider logging this as 12 hours and taking a day off when you return home to make up for it.
#7 Stay Organized and On-Task
If you’re used to being surrounded by family and coworkers, being on your own can be a bit scary. Here are some things you should do before you go in order to stay on track: – Create an outline of what needs to get done each day and map out the steps needed. Use sticky notes or other reminders so you’ll remember what comes next.
Make lists of all the materials needed for each task (don’t forget pens!). Keep these materials near your workspace so they’re easy to find when you need them.
Establish a routine that will help remind yourself of how much time has passed and how long it will take to complete tasks.
#8 Practice Good Nutrition and Sleep Hygiene
Practising good nutrition and sleep hygiene will help you maintain a balance of energy, focus, and overall well-being while working remotely. You should have a varied diet that consists of whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains to provide the nutrients you need.
You also need to have good sleep hygiene practices in order to stay rested while staying alert on the job. Find a quiet place where you can take a nap, use earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones to block out any distractions, and keep your bedroom dark. Finally, set up your room with relaxing music or aromatherapy to create an environment that helps lull you into a restful sleep.
