Acceptable Christian Worship. RCCG Sunday School Manual
Memory Verse: God is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth“- John 4:24.
Bible Passage: John 4: 19-25.
Introduction
Worship is an act of paying homage which involves deep respect, reverence, adoration and showing sincere love to a supreme being. The Almighty God who created us must be worshipped for who he is and not because He needs anything from us (Acts 17: 23-25; 1 Peter 29:2). Since we are created for worship, it is important that we find out ways to do it so as to be acceptable by Him who commands it.
Lesson Outlines
1. Prepare for Worship
2. Acceptable worship
Preparing for Worship
The following step should be taken by anyone preparing to worship God in an acceptable manner:
1. Put your heart in order : Before moving into the external act of worship, there is the need for you to put your heart in order. This is to ensure that hinderances to your worship are off loaded from your heart. We must get rid of anger, hatred, unforgiveness, bitterness and other vices (Col. 3:8-9).
2. Reconcile with all: There is the need for is to reconcile with God and man in any area of offence (Mattew 5: 23-24; Acts 24:16). We need to reconcile and make restitution when neccesary (Luke 19:8).
Acceptable Worship
Not all worship is acceptable to God (Ps. 15:1-5; Matt. 7:21). There are various forms of unacceptable worship. These include:
1. Vain worship: This is based on lip service and not from the heart (Matt. 7:6).
2. Ignorant worship: It refers to worship without the knowledge kg who God really is and how he should be worshipped. ( John 4:22;Acts 17:22-23).
3. Will or self-imposed worship : It refers to satisfying personal will abd desire instead of carrying out God’s instruction ( Col. 2:20-23: Lev. 10:1-2).
Acceptable worship is based on worship rendered to God in spirit and in truth (John 4:39-24). Acceptable worship it service is always offered in holiness (Ps. 96:9): from a heart ” void of offence towards God, and towards men” (Acts 24:16). It is one done by faith, like the sacrifice if Abel ( John 9: 36-38; HEB. 11:4).
