Knowing God's Will For Marriage

Knowing God’s Will For Marriage. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing and obtaineth favour of the LORD”– Prov. 18:22.

Bible Passage: Genesis 24:1-19.

Introduction

Marriage is the intimate union or legal relationship between a husband and wife that should last for a lifetime (Genesis 2:21-23). The steps taken before going on the journey are very important to prevent pitfalls. In knowing God’s will, therefore, you do not have to rely on vague feelings and strange rituals. As a child of God, you have his Word, His Spirit within you and His ministers to guide you and counsel you.

OUTLINES

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD FIRST

Marriage is a creation of God. It all started with Him (Genesis 2;18). God will only guide His own (Jeremiah 10:23). He wants us to know and do His will and He is actively involved in revealing it. Therefore, before seeking God’s will for marriage, develop a relationship with Him (ps. 119:130; Ps. 119:105). You must not live your life in fear but in fellowship with God (2 Timothy 1:7). Develop your God-given gift and master how God deals with or guides your steps (Psalms 85:8; Psalms 37:23). Discover your purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ (John 18:37). This will reduce stress, give your life meaning and prepare you for eternity (2Peter 1;3-4). You must be found working in His will (vineyard) like Adam and have a source of income (Genesis 2:15-18) because marriage is not for lazy people.

Pre-marital Counsel

God does not want His children to be joined with unbelievers (2 Cor.:14-16; 1 Cor. 6:15-17). How then do we recognise God’s will in marriage?

  1. Through the word of God (Prov. 3:5-7). God has placed His word in our hands so we could have a more objective set of guidelines to follow than dreams, feelings and impulses. Despite your dreams and conviction, pray to have a scriptural backing (Prov. 18:22, Genesis 2:22; Prov. 19:14).
  2. God will work in you to do His will. He will use circumstances and situations to perfect His will for your life (Romans 8:28; Phil. 2:12-13). You must, therefore, remain sensitive, paying attention to doors He opens and closes to direct your path.
  3. Through the council of elders or spiritual heads in the church (Psalms 1:1; Prov. 19:21; Prov. 11:14; Prov. 15:22; Acts 1:24; Titus 2:3-5). Do not let the passion for sex, peer/parental pressure, age, poverty etc influence your hasty decision. At such sensitive moments, do not despise godly counsel from spiritual heads (Prov. 14:29b; Is. 52:12).
  4. The environment you are in and the friends you keep may also influence your choice. Therefore, keep company with only believers of like passion (1 Cor. 15:33).
  5. Pray fervently. You need to keep the channel of communication with God open, especially by praying without ceasing. This will key you to the mind of God concerning who and when to marry (1 Cor. 2:9-11).

CONCLUSION

Let God lead you in the choice of your marriage partner.

The Glory Of The Youth. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “The glory of young men is their strength, and the beauty of old men is the grey head”- Proverb 20:29.

Bible Passage: Ecl. 12:1-8.

Introduction

The youthful stage is the period of human life between childhood and full adulthood. It is a state of being young. This is the period of human life where everyone can exercise strength to the fullest of their capacity. The way you live as a youth will determine what will become of you at old age. In Ecclesiastes 12:1, the Bible says “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw near when you say “I have no pleasure in them”.

OUTLINES

  1. Characteristics and biblical examples of a glorious youth
  2. Maximizing your youthful strength.

CHARACTERISTICS AND BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF A GLORIOUS YOUTH

Glorious youths aren’t common people because they use their strength to achieve greater results in their time. the word STRENGHT goes beyond physical power and emotional toughness. It is the totality of raw potentials given by God to fulfill specific purpose or to perform an assignment on earth (Jer. 1;5). This strength brings out the Glory in a youth (1 Sam. 16:18). Yor potentials are your strength in life. If you want to saor higher in life, you must identify your potential and build your strength on it. Glorious youths are people who are willing to learn and act on what they have have been thought (2 Timothy 2:1-2). They have big dreams which they pursue relentlessly until they are fulfilled (Gen 42:9). They are zealous and use their zeal creatively for the peace and progress of the nations (1 Sam. 17:32). they are people of great reputation (Gen. 39:9). Glorious youths are very creative and innovative in their chosen career (2 Chro. 2:14).

Youths in the Bible did exploits and records of their works are noted for us to emulate today. Some of them include: Joseph (Gen. 41: 38-46), David (1 Sam. 17:19-37). Shadrack, Meschack amnd Abednego (Daniel 3: 16-18), Mary (Luke 1: 27-28), Timothy (2 Timothy 1:2-5) and jesus (Luke 2: 42-52).These are examples of young people who did not wait until they were all grown up to serve God. They were not the future. They were present. They made a huge impact in the world in their youth.

By the standard of the Bible, Christian youths are spiritually endowed to take the lead and subdue nations for Christ anywhere they find themselves in the world. Youths are to be in the forefront of revolutions (both physical and spiritual) in this time and age. Youths are to take control of every sector of leadership and economy of the world. Christian youths need to behave like the children , who understands the time and season.

MAXIMIZING YOUR YOUTHFUL STRENGHT

The major pre-equisite to serve God effectively in your youth is to give your life to Christ with no reservation. There are many areas of strength that every youth must harness and maximise for the kingdom’s profitability. Here are some of them:

I. Speech: Talk in a way that honours God (Eph. 4:25-29). Stop telling lies; only use words that are true because God is truthful (Eph. 4: 25-29). Use words that are gentle (Prov. 15:1). Gentleness means to remain calm and kind, even when you are angry. Do not shout or use harsh words. Use words that are pure. No cursing or use of dirty words. Use words that are loving. Do not hurt people with your words nor talk about them behind their back. Use your words to encourage, teach, comfort, give good advice and build them up in the way of the Lord (Eph. 4:29).

2. Life: Imitate Christ with your actions (1 John 2:6). Read your Bible every day so that you can learn what Christ is like. You cannot act like Chirst if you do not know what He is like. Obey God’s word whenever you read the Bible. Also. in every situation in life, ask yourself ” What would Jesus do?”, and then do it.

3. Love: Do everything with love. Being a Christian is all about love. Jesus said the greatest commandment is love (Mattew 22:37-40; 1 Cor. 16:14). Let love be your highest goal. If you want to serve God in your youth, then, do everything with love. Make your life all about love (John 3:16).

#4. Faith: Have unwavering confidence in God. Faith is confidence in God, that He is who He says he is and will do what He says He will do. (Heb. 11:1). The best and perhaps the only way to set an example of unwavering faith is in the face of trials. Trials are faith tests. When the storms of life hit. Do not get angry with Him (Romans 8:28).

#5 Purity: Strive for total sexual purity. God’s will for our sexuality is to keep all sexual activity in marriage- visual, mental, emotional, and physical. This applies to single people and married people (1 Thess. 4;3-5; Romans 12:1-2).

CONCLUSION: God wants you to serve Him in your youth by duly committing yourself to Him (Proverbs 3:5-8). Do not wait for adulthood. Rather, begin right. The best way to start serving god is by setting an example for others to follow. Be an exemplary Christian. Set an example of a fully-devoted Christian, and God will use you in a mighty way.

Bible Passage: Colossians 4:5-6.

INTRODUCTION

Hundreds of millions of people are becoming increasingly interested in social networking sites to enjoy and maximise the relational opportunities of these sites. Are these networking sites the next big mission field or an enormous waste of time? Should a Christian participate in social networking? The answer to these questions should be determined by whether we can honestly ask God to bless and use our actions for His own good purposes (1 Cor. 10:31).

OUTLINES

  1. SOCIAL MEDIA DESCRIBED
  2. IMPACT OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA

SOCIAL MEDIA DESCRIBED

Social media are web-based technologies that facilitate the sharing of ideas, thoughts and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. By design, social media is internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content (user-generated content) which is the lifeblood of the social media organism. Social media websites and applications are such that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

A social networking service is an online platform which people use to build social networks or social relationships with other people who share similar personal, business or career interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections. There are various social network platforms used by individuals based on their interests and purpose for use. Some commonly used social media sites are Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Quora, TikTok, Facebook, Messanger, Pinterest, Viber, Discord, Twitter, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Google+, Telegram, Skype, QQ, Tumblr, Reddit, Snapchat, Zoom and other professional/business platforms.

IMPACT OF THE SOCIAL MEDIA

It is important to understand the impact our status, photo, comments or blog posts may have in the future (Prov. 11:27-28). It should be remembered that social networking sites involve publishing on the internet mostly for public views which include friends, family, church members, current and future employers, school admission personnel etc. Social media has both positive and negative impacts on users.

Some of the positive impacts are:

I. The potential of the social media can be harnessed for the propagation, expansion and growth of the gospel (Is. 11:9):

ii. Corporate engagement: Social media can help improve an individual’s sense of reasoning with real or online communities and be entrepreneurs, profits and non-profit making organisations, advocacy groups, political parties, government sectors, etc.

iii. Building of relationships: Families, friends, associates etc. can easily connect and reconnect for meaningful relationships (Prov. 18:24).

iv. Social Media Influencers: These are social users who have established credibility and audience, who can persuade others by virtue of their trust-0worthiness and authenticity. You can become a great Influencer for God through social media (1 Timothy 4:12; 2 Timothy 2:1-2; Titus 2:7). Souls can be won and discipled through you as you showcase Christ and the kingdom’s virtues to the world.

v. Ease of doing business: Products and services can be advertised or marketed in real time. It gives the opportunity to create a sales funnel whereby a new contact becomes a potential/serious customer (Proverbs 22:29).

Some of the negative impacts are:

I. Uncontrolled/untamed posts (pictures, videos, captions etc)- Proverbs 18:2; Col. 4:6. The consequence of any statements, both now and in the future, should be considered. It should be assumed that everything written or said is permanent and viewable by everyone (Prov. 21:23).

ii. Treating the Bible as irrelevant or archaic in relation to modern trends and techniques. Spreading of heretical teachings and half-truths.

iii. Playing down the God-factor as a social media influencer for the sake of retaining followers from all walks of life (Romans 1:28).

iv. Self-Isolation. Avoid physical meetings or interactions while using social media as a disguise to engage in some unethical activities/behaviour.

v. Social media addictions (Galatian 5:1): Limiting the amount of time( except for business purposes) we devote to these social networking sites is both healthy and wise.

vi. Attention deficiency syndrome i.e inability to concentrate on a task or programme for a specific period without diverting to social media.

vii. Physical disconnection among close relatives. Family members living together can even become familiar strangers.

viii. Vanity metrics. Relying on the response from others through likes, and comments to your posts in judging your self-worth or importance.

ix. Activities of scammers and fraudsters.

x. Narcissism. Excessive self-love or self-importance emerges when we rely on social media sites primarily to promote ourselves or draw attention to ourselves.

CONCLUSION: Be disciplined in the use of social media. It is also wise to have accountability partners; encourage your spouse, family members and Christian brothers/sisters to view your social networking activity and hold you accountable (Prov. 27:17).

King Solomon. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory verse: “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and the largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the seashore”-1 Kings 4:29.

Bible Passage: 2 Chronicles 9:22-28.

INTRODUCTION

King Solomon was born in Jerusalem 1000BC to King David and Bathsheba. He was David’s sixteenth son. Solomon was a fabulously wealthy and wise king of the United Kingdom of Isreal who succeeded his father King David. He was one of the most powerful kings of the eastern lands. He is the author of 3000 proverbs and he composed 1005 songs. (1 Kings 4:32).

OUTLINES

  1. CHARACTER AND HIS ACHIEVEMENTS
  2. LESSONS FROM HIS LIFE.

CHARACTER AND HIS ACHIEVEMENTS

King Solomon ruled Isreal between 970BC and 930BC. He wrote Song of Solomon (also called Song of Songs), Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. He asked the Lord for an understanding heart to judge His People so that he might discern between good and evil (1 Kings 3:9). Because he did not ask for long life, riches and the life of his enemies, the Lord gave him “a wise and understanding heart” (1 Kings 3:11-12). He built the House of the Lord, the temple, on Mount Moriah (2 Chro. 3:1).

King Solomon was famously known for his wisdom (2 Chronicles 9:22). He surpassed all of the kings of the earth in riches and honour in his days (1 Kings 3:13). His reign was the most peaceful as he did not fight any war (1 Kings 4:24). towards the end of his life, he had 700 wives (Princesses) and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3). He summed up all life had taught him in the last chapter of Ecclesiastes: “…fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecl. 12:13b).

LESSONS FROM HIS LIFE

The wisest and the richest man that ever lived was Solomon. God revealed Himself to him physically and talked with him twice. King Solomon took many foreign wives for himself, which God had forbidden him to do, and they turned his heart to other gods, as God had warned Him. So, God tore the kingdom out of the hand of his son (1 Kings 11:1-12). Here are some of the crucial lessons to learn from the life of Solomon.

  1. If you need wisdom, ask God for it and He will give it to you. If you believe and do not waver (James 1:5-8).
  2. Do not take things of the world unto yourself, or they may become a snare to you- keep yourself separate from them (1 John 2:15-17).
  3. Riches and wisdom will not keep you spiritually safe if you insist on disobeying God (Col. 3:5-6).
  4. We should not just know what is right, but do what is right (James 4:17).

King Solomon had it all and failed in so many ways but he found restoration in the arms of God. He then shared his own journey and tried to encourage others to avoid such traps in the books he authored. His sin led to the kingdom being divided in the hand of his son.

Conclusion: Solomon was human just like all of us and everyone makes mistakes. Thankfully, if we genuinely repent, we serve a redeeming God whose grace and love are unmatched.

QUESTIONS

  1. What are the achievements of King Solomon?
  2. Mention five (5) lessons from the life of King Solomon.

Understanding Conflict Management In The Family.

Memory Verse: “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men”- Romans 12:17.

Bible Passage: Genesis 13: 7-9.

Introduction

A family is defined as a group of people related by blood, marriage, adoption or custom. Generally, conflict can be defined as a solid disagreement between persons or groups that often results in heated arguments. Conflict management is the practice of being able to identify and handle conflict sensibly, fairly and efficiently. Conflict is inevitable. Bridging Marital Gaps. RCCG Sunday School Manual

Memory Verse: “Neither give place to the devil”- Eph 4:27.

Bible Passage: 1 Cor. 7:1-40.

Introduction

God is the author of marriage (Gen.2:24). He designed it to bring glory to His name and also for man to enjoy. However, many marriages today are not conforming to the will of God. Rather than bringing pleasure, many marriages are full of pains and tales of woes because of human choices made contrary to biblical blueprints. In this lesson, we shall unravel some of the gaps prevalent in some marriages leading to unfaithfulness among couples.

OUTLINES

  1. FORMS OF MARITAL GAPS
  2. SOME PRACTICAL WAYS TO BRIDGE THE GAPS

A. Location Gaps: Long period of absence, whether for work or serving in the military, greatly reduces the opportunities couples have to properly bond. Examples are the Photiphars (Genesis 39: 5-7) and the Uriahs (2 Samuel 11). Long-distance marriage is not ideal.

B. Emotional Gaps: The feeling of insecurity and loneliness, whether emotional, physical or sexual, can create a gap between couples. The search for excitement to escape boredom and experiment with new things like adopting new hobbies or hanging out with new friends can affect relationships between spouses.

C. Poor boundaries: Poor personal boundaries, or the limits we place on other people as to what we find acceptable or unacceptable, can result in a marital gap.

D. Revenge: The desire to pay back the wrongdoing of a partner in the “same coin” can result in a marital gap.

E. Sexual Gaps: Many partners in a marital relationship are not enjoying sex or getting satisfaction sexually. They are only enduring and coping because their spouses are not sensitive to their sexual needs. Regardless of gender, having an uninteresting sex life could put your relationship at risk of infidelity.

F. Financial Gaps: When the financial orientation of the couple differs and both parties fail to reach a compromise as to how money should be managed, there are bound to be conflicts which may negatively affect our union.

G. Physical/physiological gaps: There are also situations where a couple does not pay attention to each other or does not live like a normal couple, go out together or have a passionate relationship. Eventually, one or both of them look outside their relationship for someone whom they want to be with. (Mal. 2:14-16).

H. Communication Gaps: Communication is one of the most fundamental components of a successful relationship. If you cannot talk to your spouse and listen to what he or she has to say, you will have a hard time making it through the difficult hurdles in your marriage. Not being able to share secrets, stories and feeling with their spouses can lead some people to open up to others emotionally.

I. Excessive Use of The Internet and Social Media: Connecting with other people and talking or chatting with them for hours at length at home, work or even in some public places at the expense of your spouse can extend the gap in your relationship.

SOME PRACTICAL WAYS TO BRIDGE THE GAPS

You can take your relationship to the next level by practically taking some steps to bridge the gaps:

  1. Avoid living separately in the name of a job offer or searching for ‘greener pasture”.
  2. Understand your spouse’s love languages i.e ask and do things that make them want to be with you the more e.g holding hands.
  3. Go together on Dates; visit other families, friends and colleagues together.
  4. Commend the good things your spouse does.
  5. Condemn what is bad in love (not the person but the act)  and apologise correctly. Give no room to the devil (Eph. 4;27).
  6. Handle matters discreetly and immediately.
  7. Celebrate each other, exchange gifts regularly and create a conducive atmosphere for God’s presence in your homes (Ps. 133:1).

CONCLUSION

Marriages succeed on intentional effort and purposeful choices made by the partners to make it heaven on earth.

Apologising Correctly. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Let us, therefore, follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another”. -Romans 14:18.

BIBLE PASSSAGE: 1 SAMUEL 15:12-26.

INTRODUCTION

Originally, the word ‘apology’ (or apologia in Greek) means a defence, excuse, or justification in speech or writing, as for a cause or doctrine. However, towards the end of the 16th Century, there was a twist in the use of the word “apology” to mean a written or spoken expression of one’s regret, remorse, or sorrow for having insulted, failed, injured or wronged another.

As Christians, we know we are meant to be kind, loving, humble and respectful (Eph. 4:32). One true test of this is how we handle situations when we have been wronged or wronged by others. A lot of people find it hard to admit when confronted with the wrongs they have committed. Some may even find it harder to ask someone for forgiveness especially when they feel the other person shares in the blame.

OUTLINES

  1. Why “I am sorry” is not enough.
  2. The Correct Approach

There is a subtle but sensitive difference between saying ‘sorry’ and apologising correctly. Most times, people’s idea of apologising correctly. Most times, people’s idea of an apology is insufficient. For some, offering an apology is all about verbally saying “I am sorry” but it is only a band-aid in that it covers up painful events for the other person without really making things right. It does not fully take into account the level of wrong done. Although, simply saying “I am sorry” might ease the tension of bumping into someone accidentally or mistakenly saying what should not be said, when we have truly wronged someone, that person needs us to accept responsibility for the pain caused. Saying sorry just because we are caught and not because we are humble enough to truly admit our wrongs or shifting blames (making excuses is called “fauxology” (false apology). This is wrong. God is not impressed (Gen. 50:15-18; 1 Samuel 15: 24-26).

Therefore, a true apology focuses on your actions and not on the other person’s response/action.

THE CORRECT APPROACH

Whenever we wronged God or someone else, God expects us to make things right (2 Chro. 7:14). Often, when a person apologises in the wrong way, the offence is not cleared. Some of the wrong approaches include the following statements:

  1. “I was wrong, but you were wrong too”. This is incorrect because you are not taking full responsibility for your offence.
  2. “If I have been wrong, please forgive me”. To use if, before your apology means that you are saying, “I am not really convinced that I was wrong”. Therefore it is not a real apology.
  3. “I am sorry I know I lost my temper, but you make me do it”. This is wrong because you are not taking responsibility for your wrongdoing but putting the blame on the other person.
  4. “I said I was sorry. What more do you want from me?” The apology is not correct because the tone is aggressive, not remorseful and may not give the offended enough time to heal.

To apologise correctly, we should take full responsibility for our offence, name the offence, ask the person to forgive us and wait for the answer(Matt. 5:23-24). If need be, offer also to make restitution (Luke 19:8).

Here is an example of the right way to apologise. “Chrisy, I was wrong in losing my temper and talking to you the way I did, please forgive me”. To settle the matter completely, if the person says that you are forgiven, it is good to ask, “Do I need to say any more about the matter?”

When a Christian apologises correctly, he is demonstrating humility, a character quality God holds in high esteem (James 4:10). Being reconciled to an offended brother or sister should be our priority (Matt. 5:23-24). Note that you do not apologise to people for being right with God (1 John 3:21).

Biblical examples of those that offered apologies correctly include the prodigal son (Luke 15: 17-20) and Jacob (Gen. 32:33).

CONCLUSION

Apologising correctly humbles us and reminds us that we still make mistakes and need forgiveness from God and others.

Self-Discovery And Self Development. RCCG Manual.

Memory Verse: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going”-Ecl. 9:10

Bible Passage: Genesis 26: 12-22.

INTRODUCTION

One of the crucial challenges every human faces is the discovery of his purpose for living. When the use of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable. If you do not know what God has prepared you for, you may not be able to operate successfully as an entrepreneur. That is why it is important to find out what exactly it is, God has purposed for your life and acquire the necessary skills for the accomplishment of this divine purpose in the contemporary, complex and competitive world you live in.

OUTLINES

  1. Discover your creative ability
  2. Develop essential skills

DISCOVER YOUR CREATIVITY ABILITY

God is the first entrepreneur (Genesis 1: 1-31), the source of all creativity, and the originator of our ability to make something of value out of the raw materials of this world ( John 1:3; Hebrew 11:3). God expresses your purpose through prayer, Bible study, education, training, dreams, visions, instincts, inclinations, desires, counselling, urgings and yearnings towards particular areas (Jer. 29:11; Ps. 119:105; Prov. 3:5-6).

The entrepreneurial process requires a lot from a person. It requires them to look at the world and see an unmet need, an area of dissatisfaction, or a problem. Visualize a solution, often a solution others belittle. In many cases, the solution requires a completely different approach, something no one else could see (Genesis 44:34-40; Genesis 47: 13-26).

To create something truly useful, lasting and of value, we must create as God did. The enterprise must serve others, give them value, make life more enjoyable and glorify God (Colossians 3:17). A person that creates purely for himself as a hobby, not a business. When your hobby translates into a business, it adds value to others. When the motivation, as well as the business, is honourable. God delights to bless it (Ps. 37:23). Accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour and having a relationship with Him is the prerequisite to discovering God’s purpose for you as an entrepreneur (Is. 2:5; 1 John 1:7; Eph. 5:8).

Develop Essential Skills

The following are the essential skills required from an entrepreneur:

  1. Communication skill: The ability of the entrepreneur to pass information about the product, its unique selling point, price and other relevant information that the customer should be aware of about the product and the company (Colossians 4:6; Eccl. 10:12; Mark 9:50; 1 Peter 3:15).

2. Listening skill: This is the ability of the entrepreneur to be attentive and respond to the prospective customer’s questions and complaints about the product being introduced to them through personal selling, sales promotion, etc. The salesman must not be aggressive in his approach so that he can successfully close sales (James 1:19).

3. Negotiation skill: This is the ability of the entrepreneur to bargain successfully with the middlemen i.e wholesaler and retailer about place orders, volume/quantity of product, pricing, discount and other incentives provided by the company with utmost sincerity and proper articulation of its policies on penetration, distribution, and competitive strategies (Luke 14:28; Genesis 21: 28-31).

4. Conflict management skill: The ability to settle disputes amicably between the company and its customer is another vital skill required from an entrepreneur (Heb. 12:14).

5. Problem-solving skill: The entrepreneur should possess the ability to identify, analyze and proffer appropriate solutions to various problems encountered in carrying out its selling activities. He must be able to gather relevant information from veritable sources, and analyze and interpret the information in line with his knowledge about consumer behaviour and purchasing decision process.

6. Interpersonal skill: The entrepreneur must be able to interact with people easily and relate with them because anybody met is a potential customer someday or somewhere. The salesperson must be approachable, cheering and purposeful (1 Sam 22:1-2).

7. Time Management skill: Proper time management is necessary to differentiate between extremely urgent tasks and those that can wait. An entrepreneur should use a notebook or whiteboard to prioritise tasks by writing them down (Ecl. 3:1).

8. Technical skill: To be in stride with the recent times, entrepreneurs should at least have a basic knowledge about the technologies that are to be used (Dan. 9:2).

9. Managerial skill: Entrepreneurs should have the required skill to manage different people such as clients, employees, co-workers, competitors etc (Gen. 39: 4,9a).

10. Organizing skill: They should be highly organised and be able to maintain everything in a format and style (1 Chro. 12:32).

CONCLUSION: Proper use of your skill is a gateway to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Be intentional.

Youthful Lusts. YAYA RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteous and godly, in this present world”-Titus 2;12 (NKJV),

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Timothy 2:22-25.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Lust is any strong ungodly desire. Lust acted upon always leads to sin and death (James 1:15). Sin entered God’s perfect world through Lust (Gen, 2:16-17). David lusted after Bathsheba (Uriah’s wife) and when he acted upon that lust, it led to adultery, murder of Uriah and the death of his infant son that resulted from the sinful act (2 Sam. 11:2-4, 14,15; 2 Sam. 12:13-14). Lust can take various dimensions but God has empowered us to overcome lustful thoughts.

OUTLINES

Some Dimensions of Lust

Get Rid of Lustful Thoughts

Some Dimensions of Lust

Lust is not only a sexual nature (Matt. 5:28), Greed is lust for money or power (Prov. 15:27; 1 Timothy 6:10-11). Envy is lust for status or position someone else holds (Prov. 23:17). Covetousness is lust for anything we do not have (Ex. 20:17). Worldliness is lust for the mundane and ephemeral things of the world system (1 John 2:15-17).

Lust starts with a thought (Prov. 30:32). While we are not responsible for every thought that enters our heads, we are responsible for what we do with those thoughts (Ez. 38:10; Prov. 24:9). A lustful thought must be seen as an enemy and dealt with before it takes over our lives (James 1:14-15). The desire grows until it creates dissatisfaction with our current situation and imposes upon us the belief that happiness and contentment are impossible unless we have what we want (1 Timothy 6:18). Ungodly actions result from lustful thoughts, so, it is important that we get rid of such thoughts as soon as they arrive.

GET RID OF LUSTFUL THOUGHTS

To get rid of lustful thoughts, you must first define your areas of weakness and greatest temptation. The next fundamental step is to consciously replace lustful thoughts with thoughts that are true, honourable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and worthy of praise (Phil. 4:8). We must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). We must repent of entertaining lustful thoughts and ask the Lord’s help in redirecting our thoughts (Ps. 19:14).

It’s the lustful thoughts we are trying to get rid of involving another person, we can defuse their power by turning those thoughts into prayers for the other person’s well-being. By bringing that person before the Lord, we weaken lust’s power to objectify them (Matt. 26:41). When we bring our will into an agreement with God’s will, we learn to see this person as He does, not as lust does.

Stopping lustful thoughts also requires filtering the information we are allowing into our minds through our senses (Prov. 4:23). If pornographic images have been burned into our minds through sinful viewing, we can ask the Lord to remove those images over time (Ps. 51:7,10). By refusing to look at things that incite lust, filtering our music or language that creates lustful thoughts, and banishing lustful memories from our catalogue, we can starve lustful thoughts until they have little to work with (2 Timothy 2:21).

Memorising and meditating on Scripture is also a good way to avoid lustful thoughts and renew our minds (Col. 3:16; Romans 12:1-2, Psalms 119:9, 11, 105). keeping worship music playing in our wars also focuses our minds on that which is good, pure and beautiful. As we daily surrender ourselves to the Lordship of Christ, He helps transform a sinful thought life into one that pursues Him. Taking authority over lustful thoughts, rejecting them before they take root, and seeking God’s help can give us victory.

Finally, you must resist the lust for things beyond what God has already given us(Numbers 11:4-6) and the lust of the devil (John 8:44). These include the lust for power, glory and prestige at all costs (Is. 14:13-14). You should rather long for righteousness (2 Timothy 2:22), avoid fake lives and lies (Exodus 23:1) or be dishonest (Deut. 25:14-16).

CONCLUSION: Do not give room for lust to thrive in your life.

ASSIGNMENT: Students should write five (5) areas of lust they are battling with and pray to God for victory over them (No mark).

Be Thankful. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: ” Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms”– Psalms 95:2

Bible Passage: Psalms 100:1-5

Psa 100:1  A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
Psa 100:2  Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Psa 100:3  Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Psa 100:4  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him and bless his name.
Psa 100:5  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth to all generations.

Introduction

To be thankful literally means to be full of thanks or appreciation. It is an expression of gratitude to someone. Thankfulness in this context is an act of thanksgiving or a show of gratitude to God. Though some people are ungrateful for various reasons, we must not be ingrates because of its attendant dangers.

OUTLINES

  1. Reasons and Benefits OF Thanksgiving
  2. Dangers of Ingratitude

Reasons and benefits of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a command (1 Chronicles 16:8). The request of a believer should start and end with thanksgiving (Phil.4:6). We thank God for victories over battles of life (Jonah 2:9). It is important to thank God for his mercy and divine provisions (Psalms 68:19, Micha 7:18-20). Thanksgiving is offered to God for his miracles and restoration of hope (1 Samuel 2:1-5; Psalms 126:1-2). The primary reason God created us in his image is for fellowship, thanksgiving, praise and a joyful heart (Is. 43:21).

If you will cultivate the habit of showing gratitude to God, you will compel overflowing blessings from Him. These blessings include answered prayers (John 11: 41-44); abundant provision (Mark 6:6-8); deliverance from bondage (Acts 16: 25-26). Thankful people are peaceful and joyful. (Phil.4:6-7). They enjoy divine presence (Psalms 22:3; 95:2), complete restoration, wholeness (Luke 17:16-19) and victory without a fight (2 Chronicles 20:21-23).

Dangers of Ingratitude

Ingratitude is the result of vain imagination and a darkened heart. SOmetimes your thanksgiving is senseless to the ordinary person but it is more profitable to be thankful than to grumble or complain  (Romans 1:12; Prov. 15:8). There are several reasons people are ungrateful to God. Sin or spiritual blindness (Eph. 4:17-18). Refusal to take account of what God has done (Romans 1:21). Pride (Acts 12: 21-23).

Every act of ingratitude come with his attendant danger. Risk of losing the existing blessing, salvation and heaven (Mattew 25:24, 25:30). Limiting one’s blessings or unanswered prayers (Luke 17:12), 16:19). it could result in emptiness and sorrow(Prov. 15:13, 17:22) thereby, making restoration practically difficult.

Conclusion

Showing gratitude to God ensures continuous divine presence and fellowship.

Question

  1. Mention some of the reasons for thanksgiving.
  2. Why is ingratitude dangerous?

Processing Restitution. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “If the iron be blunt, and he does not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength, but wisdom is profitable to direct”- Ecl. 10:10.

Bible Verse: Genesis 20:1-18.

INTRODUCTION: Sometimes, moving forward may be difficult until we have made the past right. This is important for those who realise that their sin has wonder others and are genuinely sorry as they are eager to obey and please God.

OUTLINES

  • CAUTION AGAINST RUSHING INTO RESTITUTION
  • HOW TO PROCESS RESTITUTION.

CAUTION AGAINST RUSHING INTO RESTITUTION

It is good to sincerely decide to make right the wrongs of the past. However, sometimes in our rush to obediently cooperate with God, or to selfishly get out from under a load of guilt and regret, we rush heading into the act of restitution and end up making a bigger mess instead of learning things (Prov. 26:12; 29:20).

Many stories of restitution often end in great sadness, instead of reconciliation. Hastily plunging into restitution can easily make new wounds and frequently they are bigger than what we are trying to correct.

HOW TO PROCESS RESTITUTION

When we finally make decisions to make amends for a wrong we have done, there are a few wise steps to consider so that our attempt to make things right does not make them worse instead.

#1 Counsel: It is best to seek advice before proceeding with resolution so that an advisor can guide us through the correction. There may be legalities that need to be considered and sometimes restitution does not need to be made (Prov. 11:14; Prov. 19:20).

#2 Scope: The general rule is that restitution can be as broad as the choice as the offence. A private offence is settled in private and a public one needs to be settled in public e.g social media (Luke 19:8; Acts 16:37). Outside of getting some counsel, those who are not part of the problem or solution should be involved in the process. If a thing is between you and God, keep it there except maybe with a trusted partner(1 John 1:9; James 5:16). If the thing needs to be made right including the legality, a Christian legal expert may need to be involved (Luke 12:58; 1 Cor. 6:1).

Sometimes, when civil laws have been broken, it requires a more severe punishment in the form of corrective measures or even imprisonment. This ensures the payment has been sufficient, especially when what was taken or damaged cannot be replaced because no financial material price is sufficient.

#3 Wait: Restitution is often best made after time is given a chance to work deeper healing, allowing your heart to soften. Patience and self-control are two of the fruit of the spirit (Galatian 5:22-23) and when dealing with a long-standing hurt, it is usually best to pray our heart into a better state before proceeding with the restitution (James 1:4).

#4 Substitution: if It is not possible to make restitution to the offended person, you find a relative or give it to the Lord. Counsel will help you decide what is appropriate.

#5: Restitution not reconciliation: Occasionally, reconciliation is not the goal. The relationship may never go back to where it was before the disagreement or wound. We cannot control how people respond and we must not express disapproval if our efforts are rejected. reconciliation is certainly desirable in most cases, but there are some situations where, even though we have apologised, it would be unhealthy or unwise for us, and maybe for them, to resurrect the previous relationship (Genesis 32:12-17).

CONCLUSION: Restitution gives peace of mind to those who will honestly do it.

The Christian Entrepreneur. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before Kings. He will not stand before unknown men”-Proverbs 22:29 (NKJV).

Bible Passage: Acts 16:14-15.

Introduction

Entrepreneurship has been described as the capacity and willingness to develop, organise and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit. Christian entrepreneurs are needed to lice out a Christ-like ethic in the business world. The Bible has many examples of entrepreneurs who in their time exhibited Godly characters. It is important to know what should characterise an ideal entrepreneur.

BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF ENTREPRENEURS

There are many biblical entrepreneurs within scripture. For instance, Abraham was a prosperous businessman trading in livestock, silver and gold (Gen. 13:1-3). Isaac was an outstanding farmer that was mightier than a whole nation (Gen. 26: 12-16). Jacob was a creative livestock manager (Gen. 3o: 31-43). Elisha was a successful farmer before he was called into full-time ministry( 1 Kings 19:19). The Apostle Peter was a commercial fisherman. He was in partnership with his brother Andrew to build a fishing business (Matt. 4:18). The Apostle Paul had a tent-making business (Acts 18:3). Lydia, the first convert to Christianity in Europe, was a self-employed merchant, selling purple-expensive clothing material (Acts 16:14-15). Job was a very industrious farmer. The livestock Job had in his enterprise would have allowed him to launch many business ventures (Job 1:2-3).

The epitome of Biblical entrepreneurship is the Saviour of humanity, Jesus the Christ. Jesus his entrepreneurial passion in the social area of life (Acts 10:38). Today, we call this area the “not-for-profit industries”. Jesus employed his purpose to transform humanity. Jesus was a change catalyst in the life-transformation industry.

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN IDEAL ENTREPRENEUR

  1. Ability to recognise opportunity:  Entrepreneurs by their hands-on opportunities that are by-passed to others. These opportunities may include meeting the demand that is not currently met, pushing up a product that is much better than what is currently in the market and solving a problem or annoyance that consumers have. Entrepreneurs recognise opportunities where they are and utilise them by producing products or rendering services that will fill the vacuum identified.
  2. The desire for independence: One of the consistent characteristics of an entrepreneur is his desire for independence. What it means is that an entrepreneur would want to work for himself/herself rather than work for others. They want to make decisions on their own (Prov. 18:1).
  3. Self Confidence: There are two characteristics of an entrepreneur that lead him into having self-confidence (1 Samuel 17: 32-37)

a. Self Motivation: Entrepreneurs sell their own goals rather than having them set by their bosses. Since these goals are set by entrepreneurs, it means they will be motivated to achieve those goals.

b. Self-discipline: Every entrepreneur should have self-discipline. if not, the business will fail. These are confident people who believe in what they are doing and believe that the job is worth doing.

4. Willingness to take risks:

Any entrepreneur is a risk-taker, they take calculated risks whether formally or informally. Mostly they take risks informally because they make calculations within their brain on what to buy, keep and sell later. They equally try to figure out the probability of success of their business. Once they are convinced that it is high, they will go into such business. Entrepreneurs are not tired of trying. If they invest in a business and they fail, they can try again or venture into another business so they can succeed (Prov. 24:16; Ecl. 11:1).

5. Constantly learning: There is always something you do not know and something else that has just been discovered. Both are essential for entrepreneurs. You cannot build a business around something you do not know about, and you cannot improve products and services using outdated methods. Entrepreneurs are always on the prowl to learn more about what they do and what their competitors are working on.

CONCLUSION

God want Hid children to have dominion in the business world. Make up your mind to be a Godly young entrepreneur.

Understanding Of The Times. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had an understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment”. -1 Chro. 12:32.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Eccl. 3:1-8.

INTRODUCTION:

WHAT IS COVERED

Orderliness is one of the characteristics of our God. There is time for everything and He has made everything beautiful in His time. Like the sons of Issachar, Christians must constantly pray for wisdom and grace to understand the time and to act accordingly in life (1 Chro. 12:32).

OUTLINES

1. UNDERSTANDING THE TIMES

2. IT IS NOT YET TIME TO REST

UNDERSTANDING THE TIMES

As part of the list of events that characterise times and seasons in the third chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes, believers are clearly admonished in Scripture to watch and act wisely (Mark 13:33). For instance, God wants believers to discern:

  1. The seed (sowing) time and harvest time (Gen. 8:22; Gal. 6:7-9).
  2. The time of God’s favour (Ps. 102:13; Is. 40:2).
  3. The time to praise and trust God (Ps. 34:1; Ps. 62:8; Job 14:14).
  4. The time to awake out of spiritual sleep or slumber (Romans 13:11; Eph. 5:14;1 Cor. 15:34).
  5. The time to serve God diligently (Eccl. 12:1; 1 John 9:4).
  6. The perilous time (2 Timothy 3:1-7;1 Timothy 4:1;2 Peter 3:3).
  7. The time of judgement (2 Peter 2:9;2 Peter 3:7).

IT IS NOT YET TIME TO REST

As believers, we must realize that we are sojourners here on earth and at the close of age we shall give an account of our pilgrimage (HEB. 11:13; 1 Peter 2:11). This is why our Lord, Jesus Christ said, ” I must work the works of Him that sent me, while it is day: the night is cometh when no man can work.”. (John 9:4). It is true that God is not against rest after labour (Mark 6:31, Eccl. 5:12), however, believers should not rest before time (1Kings 13:7-9) or give up on their calling (1 Kings 19:4). The king’s business required haste ((1 Sam 21:8). Therefore, the hour to work is now (Psalms 119:60; Eccl. 12:1). It is dangerous to rest, or give up in the battlefront with the enemy around (1 Peter 5:8; Matt. 13:25). No matter the situation, God has the solution. He is beautiful in all situations ( Ps. 48: 1-2; Eccl. 3:11).

CONCLUSION: To live daily in God’s will and fulfil a purpose, a believer must understand the time and act appropriately.

QUESTIONS

2. Why is it not yet time to rest?

Running Business As Christians. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal,: “The Lord knows those who are His”, and “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity”- 2 Timothy 2:19.

Bible Passage: Psalms 37:3-9.

Introduction

While there are many paths to success, not all of them are ethical or recommended for a Christian business owner because the way you define success is probably different from the way a non-believer defines it. To build a successful business, you must know the biblical principles for business success so you can use them to achieve your business goals to the glory of God.

BIBLICAL BUSINESS PRINCIPLES

Principle No. 1: God owns it all: As a business owner, it is easy to think you are the boss and everything you own belongs to you. Knowing God owns it all, you will strive to do everything for His glory and shun business practices and ethics that are not pleasing to God (Haggai 2:8; Ps. 50:10; Deut 8:18). See your business as a means to further the gospel and the kingdom of God. Use it as a platform to witness to others.

Principle No 2: Be a Value-Giver: We should create great products and services that we would gladly purchase ourselves (Ex. 28:6; Ex. 31:4; Romans 12:11). Being excellent at what we do is a fantastic way to honour God and to love our neighbours. Do unto others as you want them to do to you (Matt. 7:12).

Principle No. 3: Take action and work hard: Do not just talk about starting a business, or changing your current marketing strategy- take action (Prov. 12:24; Prov. 22:29). Also, do not just complain about something when it is not working well. Go and fix it. If you are trying to reach financial independence through starting a business, working hard will help propel you towards that (Prov. 10:4;14).

Principle No 4: Wisdom: You need wisdom to make the right decisions for your business, so you can avoid making irreversible or costly mistakes (James 1:5). Do not be afraid to pray for wisdom or be too proud to seek God’s direction for your business (Prov. 4:7; Ps. 37:23).

Principle No. 5: Humility: To relate well with people, especially clients or customers, you must remain humble and approachable (Prov. 11:2; James 4:6).

Principle No. 6: The right business skill: To grow your business, you have to be skilful (2 Chro. 2:8). Thankfully, it is possible to learn new skills, so there is no reason not to acquire the skills required.

Principle No. 7: The right tools and resources: For example, are there tools that can increase your productivity? Do you need a website to reach more people? Do you need to invest in some business technology? These are the type of questions you should ask yourself from time to time if you want to keep growing your business (Prov. 18:15).

Principle No 8: Make money honestly: Do not cheat, lie to, or scam people out of their money. Build up your business little by little (Prov. 13:11) Do not be greedy for gain.

Principle No. 9: Be bold and get ready to meet with people of like passion: You will need to relate with people in similar business and from other walks of life, various societal statuses/classes etc. You should be articulate in your presentations and negotiations. (Prov. 28:1; Eccl. 8:1; 2 Tim. 1:7).

CAUTION FOR CHRISTIAN BUSINESS OWNERS

Business ownership can become detrimental to one’s spiritual life if it becomes an idol or if the business owner is serving Mammon rather than God (Luke 12:16-21; Luke 16:13). Some business owners become so immersed in work that they neglect family, friends, their health and the Lord. When anything takes our total focus for an extended period of time, it can shift our lives out of balance (1 Tim. 6:10). So Christian business owners must work to keep priorities straight and remember that a business with God’s blessing will fare better that one without it (Prov. 10:22; 1 Cor. 14:40). The Lord will not tolerate our idols, so a business owner must work to keep success from becoming more important than anything else (Ex. 20:4).

When a business owner’s motive is selfish or sin-based, the business will not enjoy God’s blessings and may become a hindrance to God’s plan for the owner’s life (Jer. 18:9-10).

CONCLUSION: Christians need to take the lead and build the next Amazon, Google, Facebook and Microsoft.

  2. What are the cautions Christian business owners must note?

ASSIGNMENT

Write five (5) benefits of imbibing biblical business principles (2X5=10Marks).

Political Dominion. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth”- Romans 5:10.

Bible Passage: Genesis 1: 26-28.

Introduction
The word Dominion means “rule or power over”. God has sovereign power over His creation and has also delegated the authority to mankind to have dominion over the works of His Hands. (Gen. 1:26; Ps. 8:6). However, some Christians are passive and do not see that God wants the Church to take charge of and revamp their societies. Instead, they only see the command for believers to preach the gospel as in Matt. 28:19-20 and wait for God to implement social reforms himself.

OUTLINES

  1. Dominion Theology
  2. Disposition Of Christians To Political Dominion.

Dominion Theology

Dominion Theology refers to a line of thought with regard to the role of the church in contemporary society. It holds that Christians should rule all areas of society, personal and corporate by the Law of God. This belief is based on Genesis 1:28, which says, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion..”. This verse is a divine mandate to claim dominion over the earth, physically, spiritually, economically, politically etc. (Luke 19:13). This theological idea about Christians having political dominion has its root in the nature of God and reality, the importance of justice, the value of freedom, and a rich understanding of the human person as created in the image of God (Ps. 82:6; John 10:34), made for flourishing (Psalms 92:12-13), and called to an eternal destiny (Romans 8:30).

Disposition Of Christians To Political Dominion

The political docility of Christians of the early church could be traced to the fact that Isreal and some gentile nations were under the colonial rule of the Roman Empire and Christians were thought to be in subjection to the authorities that be (Romans 13:1) at best, they were to pray for those in power and could not participate in the politics of their time (1 Timothy 2:1-2). This might have been responsible for why Christians hesitate to be actively involved in the politics of our days, whereas, the God we believe in and serve is interested in the way the world is governed (Genesis 1:28).

Satan stole the “key of dominion” when he deceived Adam and Eve. Then, when Christ gave the “key of the kingdom” to Peter in Mattew 16:19, it was a sign that dominion had been returned to man, Now it is our job to “take back” what is rightly ours. Political dominion is a must for Christians and not an option because the earth is our place of dominion, not Heaven (Ps. 115:16). Christians have to occupy strategic political positions to be at the helm of affairs for positive influence.

While it is true that we belong to a heavenly kingdom that is not of this world, we are still numbered among the people in this world and are subjected to the rules and systems of its government (John 17:15-16). We indeed seek another home(Hebrews 11:10,14,13:14) but that should not be an excuse to be nonchalant about our present abode and refuse to take responsibility for its governance (Psalms 115:16). It is also true that the world is passing away (1 Cor. 7:31), but we should not forget that we will also give an account of how it is managed before it passes away (1 John 2:17).

Therefore, it should be of concern to Christians to be a part of “high-level” decision-making processes to ensure that justice is done, biblical principles are upheld and the Christian faith survives and its preserved (Ps. 33:5; Micah 6:8). As the salt and light of the world (Matt. 5:13-16), when we engage ourselves in politics and government, we speak out for those who cannot speak and defend the rights of the poor and needy (Prov. 31:8-9).

CONCLUSION

All Christians are political whether we realise it or not. If we choose not to engage in politics, it is a vote for the status quo-the way things are.

QUESTIONS

  1. Explain Dominion theology.
  2. Mention three (3) dispositions of Christians to political dominion.

Students should list five (5) reasons some Christians are afraid of being involved in Politics (2×5=10Marks).

Opposite-Sex Friendship. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfil its lusts”-Romans 13:14.

Bible Passage: Romans 12:9-10; Proverbs 6:27-28.

Introduction

Christian youths come together for diverse reasons such as academic activities, business/social engagements, spiritual exercises and so on. In the process, making friends with the opposite sex may be inevitable. This is not a sin as long as the motive is pure(friendship with no sting attached). However, it becomes an issue of concern when we consider the common mistakes foreseeable. We shall attempt to unravel some of the mistakes as well as discuss some of the tips for a pure friendship with the opposite sex.

OUTLINES

  1. COMMON MISTAKES
  2. TIPS FOR PURE FRIENDSHIP

COMMON MISTAKES

Here are some of the common mistakes youth makes as they relate with their friends of the opposite sex.

  1. Ignoring proper boundaries.
  2. Misrepresenting the attention of the opposite sex.
  3. Tolerating too much in the friendship and hanging on too long.
  4. Giving a blind eye to dangerous signals such as emotional attraction, attempting to touch a sensitive part of the body, holding hands, cuddling, pecking and so on (Prov. 6:27-28; Romans 12:1).
  5. Getting involved much too soon and going too far such as involvement in family functions, financial/business commitment and so on.
  6. Ignorantly sending potential spouses away.

TIPS FOR TRUE FRIENDSHIP

  1. Define the friendship and set clear boundaries.
  2. Never assume anything but ask questions when in doubt.
  3. Do not allow anyone form a canopy over your life under the pretence of friendship.
  4. Do not take advantage of your closeness to your friend to seduce him/her into any dirty game or romantic pleasure (1 Thess. 5:22; Col. 2:21).
  5. Differentiate friendship from intimacy.
  6. Do not always seek to be in lonely places or dark corners with a friend of the opposite sex.
  7. Try and include others in activities instead of isolating yourself with one person.
  8. Make a priority of same-sex friendship. Your bosom friendship should not be of the opposite sex. You can have them as close friends but not as closest friends.
  9. Seek the opportunity to serve and not be served or entertained. Real friendship is not on what you can get from others but on how to serve others. In service, we find true friendship (Romans 12:10-11).
  10. If you are in a relationship leading to marriage, make sure your partner meets with your opposite-gender friend.
  11. Guard your heart. Don does not allow premature romance to ruin your heart, which is the centre of your destiny (Prov. 4:23).
  12. Keep everything strictly platonic(surface and plain friendship).

CONCLUSION: Prioritise same-sex friendship. If you must have a friend of the opposite gender, know your boundaries and make sure you talk about them.

QUESTIONS

  1. What are the common mistakes some youths make with friends of the opposite sex?
  2. Mention at least seven (7) tips for pure friendship among youths of the opposite sex.

ASSIGNMENT

Check through your relationship with friends of the opposite sex and apply the tips you have learned to keep the friendship pure (No mark).

The Spotless Bride. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish”– Eph. 5:27.

Bible Passage: Eph. 5:17-30.

Introduction:

The Church, that is the congregation of all born-again believers, is referred tp as the Bride of Jesus Christ in Eph. 5:25-27. Almost invariably, when a man chooses a bride, he chooses someone who is closest to him in manners, attributes, aspirations, ways of doing things and the like, because only birds of the same feathers flock together (Amos 3:3). The Lord Jesus Christ is holy, spotless and without blemish, hence His Bride must be without spots or wrinkles too.

OUTLINES

  1. THE ESSENCE AND PROCESS OF BEING SPOTLESS
  2. AREAS OF SPOTLESSNESS

THE ESSENCE AND PROCESS OF BEING SPOTLESS

It is a reasonable question if a Christian asks, “Why I must be spotless?” Or why must I be pure in all things that there cannot be found in me a single spot, fault or blemish? Here are just a few of the reasons. First, a Christian is a child of God (John 1:12), and the child must be like his father. In fact, the Lord Jesus Christ said that every child of God must be like his father. In fact, the Lord Jesus Christ said every child of God must be as perfect as our Father in Heaven is perfect (Matt. 5:48). Secondly, the Christian is part of the Bride of Chris. From which it follows that the Christian is part and parcel of the holy, spotless, Christ (Eph. 5:29-30). Since Christ is spotlessly holy. It follows that no part of Him can be any less than himself. Thirdly, the wedding between Christ and His bride is going to take place in Heaven. And nothing unholy shall be allowed into Heaven (Is. 35:8). Therefore, if you wish to be part of the bride at the wedding of the lamb, you must be without spots or wrinkles (Eph. 5:27).

The steps toward a life of spotless holiness begin with the new birth in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). This is then followed by purging yourself of all sinful habits and excesses (Job. 11:14-15; 2 Timothy 2:21). After which you must steer clear of all worldly situations that can stain you or get you thinking along wrong tracks (James 1:27; 1 John 2:15-17). Then, of course, you must live daily for God, taking one day at a time and living it as if it will be the last (Romans 12:1-2; 2 Cor. 13:5). Since all determinations are useless without the help of God, you must constantly call on Jesus for help (John 15:5; Phil. 4:13).

AREAS OF SPOTLESSNESS

The next reasonable question is in what areas should the bride Christ be spotless?” The answer, of course, in all things’ However, we will specifically look at three areas: In words, thought and in deeds.

  1. Spotless in words: Christians are expected to ‘bridle their tongues’ by putting a check or carefully selecting their words in order to avoid offences (James 3:2; Col. 4:6). In order to be spotless in words, a Christian must abstain from gossiping, backbiting, lying, rumour mongering and any other speech that defiles (1 Peter 4:15; Rev. 21:27; Mark 7:20).
  2. Spotless in thoughts: Before someone can be spotless in words, he has to be spotless in thoughts (Ps. 19:14). This is because whatever comes out of your mouth is an overflow of what is in your heart (Matt. 12:34-35; Prov. 23:7). Consequently, we are advised to watch very closely what we think about and meditate upon. In fact, there is a list of things that must occupy the thoughts of a Christian. These are the things that are true, just; honest, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous and praiseworthy (Phil. 4:8).
  3. Spotless in deeds: We must not only be spotless in words and thoughts but also in deeds. In fact, our deeds are to be as pure as light. We are to shine at home, in the office, marketplace and everywhere so that the world will know who is really our Father (Matt. 5:14-16). True holiness cannot be hidden; it will always shine forth.

CONCLUSION: It is not enough for Christians to be holy. They must be spotlessly so. Anyone who hopes to be part of the bride of Christ must stay spotless.

Dating: The Christian Perspective. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Marriage is honourable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge”- Hebrews 13:4.

Bible Verse: Genesis 29: 16-20.

INTRODUCTION

The world today puts so much pressure on youths when it comes to what they prefer to call dating. The world tells us to date now and date often and date a lot of different people so we do not “miss out” on any of life’s experiences. God has a different plan for his sons and daughters. He has a higher standard for us too, one which we, as Christ followers, should strive to reach even if it goes against the world’s standards and expectations. God wants to lead us into proper courtship.

2. Fulfilment in Christ First

Description and Implication

Dating, as it is conceived, is a form of friendship or relationship typically between two individuals of the opposite sex with the aim of assessing the other’s suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or as a spouse. Literally, it means going out with someone of the opposite sex.

Dating and courtship are methods of beginning a relationship with the opposite sec (Gen. 29:18-20). Actually, courtship is the more appropriate term, however, as prescribed by the Church and supervised by marriage counsellors. It should be noted that the result of this may lead to friendship, courtship, marriage or no relationship.

While there are non-Christians who go into relationships with the intention of having a series of intimate sexual relationships, for the Christian, this is not acceptable and should never be the reason (Romans 12:2; 1 Cor. 6: 18-20). While we may not be able to completely close our eyes to this societal trend, Christian Youths should see ‘dating’ as a little more than friendship and maintain the friendship aspect of their dating until both people are ready to commit to each other as potential marriage partners.

Ideally, this period should be a time when a Christian finds out if his or her potential partner is also a genuine believer in Christ before making a commitment of a relationship (courtship) that could lead to marriage. During this time, there should be no sexual relation and closeness that could trigger emotions, as this is something that should wait until marriage (Hebrews 13:4). There must be boundaries in place and be committed to not crossing them. This type of friendship that may lead to courtship and eventually marriage, should not be between a believer and a non-believer (2 Cor. 6:14-15).

FULFILMENT IN CHRIST FIRST

In order to be in a God-centred romantic relationship in some years to come, you must first find your personal fulfilment in Christ. The stronger your faith in God, the better you will be able to love another person.

God is a jealous God (Ex. 34:14) and until you have a relationship with God that is above everything and anyone else, you will likely have someone who is more important to you than God. It is vital that it is first in your life (Matt. 22:37-39). He needs to be the one you run to when you are lonely, bored, sad etc. No friend, (especially the opposite sex) can always be there for you like God can. People are never meant to take God’s place in our lives and hearts. God has to be everything to you prior to getting into a God-honouring relationship (with marriage in view). As you wait patiently on God and diligently doing his will, He will graciously give you the best match as a spouse.

CONCLUSION: It is important that a believer finds fulfilment in Christ before entrusting his/her life into the hand of the opposite sex.

The Marriage will take place before the second phase of the second coming of Christ to the earth. Christ is the Bridegroom. IMPORTANCE AND QUALIFICATION

The marriage supper of the Lamb is meant to assemble the saints of all ages and present them to God, the Father (Matt. 25: 32-35), who will wipe away tears from their faces (Revelation 7:17). It also takes away the saints from the earth before the activities of the anti-christ and the period of the tribulation (Is. 57:1). It will also be the period to reward faithful and diligent saints.

Those who will qualify for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb are the faithful saints of God, whose garments of righteousness have not been stained (Revelation 21:27; Hebrews 12:14).
