The Thought That Counts. AG Teen Manual

TEXT: Gen 9:6; Exo 20:13-14; Prov 18:21; Matt 5:21-28; 1 Cor 6:9, 13-20

KEY VERSE: 2 Timothy 2:22

Flee evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (NIV)

Focus
In recent years, there is an increase of spiritual curiosity among young people. However, that doesn’t necessarily translate to Christianity, but many teens and young adults are open to “religion.” Religions, however, are laden with outward rituals, routines, and practices. But Christianity is about a true relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Thus, following God’s commands is a heart issue, having more to do with what happens on the inside than the outside actions.

The Sixth and Seventh Commandments covered in this session deal with clearly defined actions. But Jesus goes deeper, linking our respect for these commands to our thoughts and words. As you prepare, look deeper into your own life. You may be keeping God’s commands outwardly, but are you: relying on His help to keep them inwardly? Use this study as occasion to recommit your mouth and mind to God-pleasing purposes.

The Basic Message: Explain to students…

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?
When it comes to keeping God’s laws, thoughts can be as important as actions.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

People often break God’s laws inwardly, If not outwardly; and sinful thoughts typically lead to sinful actions.

HOW DO I LIVE IT?

Depend on God for help In keeping your thoughts toward others loving and pure.

Activity Option: THOUGHTS & ACTIONS

Write the following headings at the top of two columns on the board: 1) Thoughts Matter, 2) Actions Matter. Ask students to first describe situations In which thoughts or feelings matter more than actions (e.g., giving gifts, praying). List the responses on the board. Next, ask students to describe situations In which actions matter more than thoughts or feelings (e.g. taking needed actions In spite of being afraid, finishing your homework), Then discuss the following questions:

Guide: Explain that when it comes to following Christ, faith without action is useless (James 2:14-26). But thoughts affect actions. That’s why thoughts are critical. In fact, Jesus often put more emphasis on thoughts and attitudes of the heart than on outward actions.

• Why do actions matter? Why do thoughts matter? [Hint: Intention without actions don’t accomplish anything. But doing things for the wrong reasons or with a bad attitude can lead to trouble.

Study Overview:Explain that today’s study considers how.

• Thoughts and words can inflict death and destruction in people’s lives.
• Sexual sins start in the heart and mind.
• Depending on God to guide our thoughts and actions brings true freedom.

Inform and Discuss

a). Murder and the Mind

Teacher Hint: Read or have a volunteer read Exo 20:13. Explain that most people take this law for granted without any inclination to break it. But in the New Testament, Jesus says something about this issue that brings it closer to home.

1. Read or have a volunteer read Matt 5:21-22. How does this passage relate attitudes and actions to murder? [Hint: Anger to the point of hatred is worthy of God’s judgment. This doesn’t mean that being “mad” at someone is the moral equivalent of taking his or her life; for there is a place for righteous anger regarding wickedness or injustice. But the passage does indicate that harbouring deep, vindictive anger toward another individual can destroy you.]

2. Why would contempt or hatred toward someone be this serious? [Hint: Physical murder isn’t the only way we “kill” other people. By harsh words, attitudes, and actions, we may be guilty of character assassination. This kind of cruelty can bring death emotionally and spiritually to all people involved (Prov 18:21). And ultimately, spiritual destruction is far worse than physical death.]

3. Read or have a volunteer read Matt 5:23-26. What is your responsibility as a Christian if you’ve been hurt by someone or if you have hurt another?

Guide: Explain how hurtful words that aren’t reconciled block fellowship with God. We must make things right before worshipping or asking God for things. Doing right is more important than proving who’s right. Remember, Jesus reconciled us to Himself. He initiated the relationship even though He is innocent and we are guilty.

4. Read or have a volunteer read Gen 9:6. What reason does this passage give for the seriousness of murder? [Hint: People are made in God’s image. Abusing another human being, physically or verbally, can destroy the image of God within him or her.]

b). Adultery and Attitude
>Teacher Hint: Read or have a volunteer read Exo 20:14. Explain that the more comprehensive nature of this command indicates that any sexual act outside of a biblical marriage relationship is forbidden.

*>>Note:* Sex is an intense desire that God has placed in each person, but IT IS NOT an uncontrollable need. The One who gave us the desire for sex has also given us the ability to control ourselves and express our sexual desires in appropriate ways.]

1. Read or have a volunteer read Matt 5:23-26. Discuss and list some of the things that can lead to lust. [Hint: e.g., pornography, dirty jokes, sexual images or innuendos in movies and television.]

2. What is the difference between temptation and lust? Hint: Temptation usually appeals to natural desires. We can’t always control being tempted, but we can control what we continue thinking about. When we choose to dwell on the desires for things we shouldn’t have, we lust.

Guide: Explain that entertaining temptation quickly leads to lust, and allowing your mind to fantasize about people who aren’t your spouse is wrong because desire is meant to lead to action. The challenge is to stop this process before it starts to get away from temptation in the first place.

3. Read or have a volunteer read 2 Tim 2:22. What advice does this passage give regarding lust? How should it affect our actions?
Note: Never try to prove how spiritually strong you are by constantly exposing yourself to tempting situations. The Bible instructs you to be wiser than that-FLEE!

4. Read or have volunteers read 1 Cor 6:9, 13-20. Discuss and list some consequences of ungodly sexual activity. [Guide: Sort responses into three categories: physical (e.g., pregnancy, disease); emotional (e.g., degrades and makes objects of those involved, brings guilt and regret); and spiritual (e.g., separation from God, won’t enter His kingdom).

Guide: Explain that God gave rules regarding the use of the human body’s sexual drive because He didn’t want it to be ruined or used to hurt and destroy people. Disobeying God’s laws and misusing our sexuality has both immediate and long-term consequences.

Inspire Them: Remind students “The Basic Message” of this study (pa 61). explain WHAT the Big Idea behind the study is; WHY it matters: and HOW we can live the lesson captured in the study.

Ministry Activity: PRAYER FOR PEACE AND PURITY

You are almost certain to have students in class who are currently experiencing the pain of destructive words or guilt of sexual misconduct. Remind them that peace and purity can be difficult goals for anyone and may seem impossible for those who don’t have a relationship with Jesus. Assure students that God offers complete healing and absolute forgiveness, whether people have hurt them or they have hurt themselves. Allow time for personal reflection, then offer prayer for those who need emotional, physical, or spiritual healing. Invite those who haven’t made Jesus the Forgiver of their sins and the Leader of their lives to do so now.

*>>Conclude* by challenging students to settle any unresolved conflicts or hurtful situations by forgiving or asking forgiveness of others. Remind them that Christ expects this type of grace and humility in His followers.

Teacher Hint: Ask yourself

1. Have students considered the connection between their thoughts and actions?
2. Do students understand how we can break God’s commandments In thoughts and words as well as in actions?
3. Have students considered how to avoid hurtful actions toward others and in their own lives?
4. Have students had opportunity to resolve past issues by receiving God’s forgiveness or extending forgiveness toward others?

Nothing Can Stop Your Rising. AG Daily Devotional. 21/09/2023

Thursday 21st September, 2023
____
*TOPIC: NOTHING CAN STOP YOUR RISING*

KEY VERSE:

“I am the Lord the God of all flesh, is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27).

📖 *TODAY’S READING:*
Matthew 27: 62-66; 28:1-4

ONE YEAR BIBLE STUDY PLAN
Zechariah 1-7

COMMENTARY

After the crucifixion, death and burial of Christ, the enemies of the cross were still not satisfied. They remembered that Jesus promised to resurrect on the third day and thought to stop it.

Thus they worked out a plan to prevent Christ’s resurrection by approaching and convincing Pilate to have the tomb sealed.

Pilate granted the permissions and they sealed the tomb of Christ.

However, on the third day and as promised by Jesus before his death. Christ was resurrected from the dead. The Scripture records that prior to the resurrection of Christ, a great earthquake suddenly happened.

Then an angel of the Lord came down and rolled aside the big stone with which the tomb was sealed and sat on it.

The guards who were posted to protect the tomb and prevent Jesus’ body from being stolen by his disciples shook in fear and fell into dead faint.

Christ must rise from the dead. No power, big stone, guard, sealed tomb or anything else would prevent His rising.

Similarly, no big stone, no matter how big, will prevent your rising. God is ready and very capable to roll aside any obstacle standing in your way, or any challenge about to stand in your way. Nothing can stop God’s will from fulfilling in your life.

Therefore, do not be shaken by the Egyptians chartering against you. Be not perturbed, Jehovah shall throw aside every devil on your path. Your rising and manifestation cannot be
stopped.

CONTROLLING THOUGHTS

Be not perturbed; Jehovah shall roll aside every devil on your path: your rising cannot be stopped. Amen

PRAYER
Dear Lord, please roll aside every obstacle in my path in Jesus’ name. Amen!

Scheduling software can help project managers track resource availability, assign resources based on their skills and availability, and monitor resource utilization throughout the project.

#3 Time Tracking

Time tracking is an essential feature of scheduling software that helps project managers monitor the time spent on each task and ensure that the project stays on schedule. Scheduling software can track the time spent on each task and provide reports that show how much time has been spent on each task, how much time is remaining, and whether the project is on track to meet its deadlines.

#4 Risk Management

Risk management is a critical component of project management, and scheduling software can help project managers identify and manage risks. Scheduling software can help project managers identify potential risks, assess their impact on the project, and develop strategies to mitigate those risks. It can also help project managers track the progress of risk mitigation strategies and monitor the overall risk profile of the project.

Benefits of Using Project Management Scheduling Software

#1 Efficiency

One of the primary benefits of using project management scheduling software is increased efficiency. #2 Collaboration

Another benefit of using project management scheduling software is improved collaboration. Many project management tools offer features that allow team members to communicate, share files, and collaborate on tasks in real-time. This can help to improve communication and collaboration among team members, which can lead to better outcomes and more successful projects.

#3  Transparency

Project management scheduling software can also help to improve transparency and accountability. By providing real-time updates on project progress, task completion, and other key metrics, project management software can help to ensure that everyone involved in the project is on the same page and has access to the same information. This can help to prevent misunderstandings, improve decision-making, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.

#4 Forecasting

Finally, project management scheduling software can help to improve forecasting and planning. By providing tools for tracking progress, identifying potential roadblocks, and forecasting future outcomes, project management software can help project managers to make more informed decisions and develop more accurate project plans. This can help to reduce risk, improve project outcomes, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.

Types of Project Planning

Project planning is a crucial stage in the project management process. It involves identifying project objectives, defining project scope, creating a project timeline, and allocating resources. There are several types of project planning that project managers can use to ensure project success.

#1 Traditional Project Planning

Traditional project planning involves a linear approach to project management. It follows a sequential process where each phase must be completed before moving on to the next. This type of planning is ideal for projects with well-defined requirements and a predictable outcome. It is also useful for projects with a fixed budget and timeline.

#2 Agile Project Planning

Agile project planning is a flexible approach to project management. It allows for changes to be made throughout the project lifecycle. This type of planning is ideal for projects with changing requirements or a complex scope. It is also useful for projects with a high degree of uncertainty.

CPM is useful for projects with a large number of interdependent activities.

#4 Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT)

Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) is a project planning technique that uses statistical analysis to estimate the time required to complete a project. PERT involves identifying the critical path, estimating the time required for each activity, and calculating the probability of completing the project on time. PERT is useful for projects with a high degree of uncertainty.

Project Management Certification: What You Need to Know

Project management is a way for project managers to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise in the field of project management. Certification programs are designed to provide project managers with the skills and knowledge they need to manage projects effectively.

One of the main benefits of project management certification is that it can help project managers to advance their careers. Employers are often more likely to hire project managers who have been certified, as they know that these individuals have the knowledge and skills needed to manage projects successfully. Additionally, certification can help project managers to earn higher salaries and to take on more challenging projects.

There are several different types of project management certification programs available, including those offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Association of Project Managers (IAPM). Each program has its own requirements and benefits, so it is important for project managers to research the different options and choose the program that best meets their needs. Note that, project management certification is a valuable investment for project managers who want to improve their skills, advance their careers, and achieve greater success in the field of project management.

What is the Best IT Certification for Project Management?

Project management is a rapidly growing field that requires professionals to have a wide range of skills and knowledge to successfully manage projects. One of the ways to demonstrate proficiency in project management is through certification. IT certification for project management is an excellent way to gain recognition for your skills and knowledge in the field.

There are several IT certifications for project management, but the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is considered the gold standard. It is a globally recognized certification that is highly valued by employers. The PMP certification is offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), a non-profit professional organization that promotes project management best practices.

To obtain the PMP certification, candidates must have a minimum of three years of project management experience, a high school diploma or equivalent, and 35 hours of project management education. The PMP exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions that cover a wide range of project management topics, including project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling, and closing.

Another popular IT certification for project management is the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification, also offered by the PMI. The CAPM certification is designed for individuals who are new to project management and do not have the required experience to obtain the PMP certification. The CAPM exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions that cover project management fundamentals.

In addition to the PMP and CAPM certifications, there are other IT certifications for project management, such as the PRINCE2 certification and the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification. These certifications are designed for individuals who work in specific project management methodologies.

Project Management Certification Google

Project management certification is a valuable asset to have in today’s job market. It is a way to demonstrate to employers that an individual has the skills and knowledge needed to effectively manage projects. One way to obtain project management certification is through Google.

Google offers a variety of project management certification courses through its online learning platform, Google Skillshop. These courses cover a range of topics, from the fundamentals of project management to advanced techniques for managing complex projects.

One of the most popular project management certification courses offered by Google is the “Google Project Management Professional Certificate.” This course is designed to help individuals develop the skills and knowledge needed to become a certified project management professional. It covers topics such as project planning, risk management, stakeholder management, and project execution.

Another popular project management certification course offered by Google is “Agile Project Management with Scrum.” This course is designed to teach individuals how to use the Scrum framework to manage projects in an agile environment. It covers topics such as agile project planning, sprint planning, backlog management, and agile project execution.

Google’s project management certification courses are designed to be flexible and accessible. They can be taken online at any time, and individuals can work at their own pace. Google also offers a variety of resources to help individuals prepare for certification exams, including practice exams and study guides.

Conclusion

Project management certification can be a valuable tool for individuals and organizations looking to improve their project management practices. The research suggests that certification can help develop sustainability in project management by providing a common language and framework for project management practices.

Senior management perceptions of project management competence are also positively influenced by certification. However, it is important to note that certification alone is not sufficient to ensure effective project management. Other skills such as managing stakeholders, communication, and leadership are also critical for project success.

The value of project management certification in selection and recruiting is mixed. While some studies suggest that certification can improve job prospects and salary, others find no significant difference between certified and uncertified project managers. It may be that the value of certification is context-dependent and varies by industry, organization, and job role.

Overall, project management certification is an important consideration for individuals and organizations looking to improve their project management practices. However, it is not a guarantee of project success and should be considered in conjunction with other skills and experiences.

Project Management Software: Streamlining Your Workflow

Project Management Software: Streamlining Your Workflow

Project management software has become an essential tool for businesses of all sizes to manage their projects more effectively. With the rise of remote work and the need for collaboration across teams, project management software has become increasingly popular. These tools help teams stay organized, communicate more efficiently, and track progress towards their goals.

There are many different types of project management software available, ranging from simple to complex. Some software is designed for small teams working on short-term projects, while others are built for large organizations managing multiple projects at once. Features can include task management, scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and collaboration tools such as chat and file sharing. Choosing the right software depends on the specific needs and goals of the organization.

What Project Management Software Does?

Project management software is designed to help teams keep their projects on track by bringing together all the necessary elements needed to define the project’s scope, break it down into smaller deliverables, make assignments, schedule work, track progress against that schedule from start to finish, collaborate, share documents, and much more.

One of the foremost use cases of any project management software is project planning, or the ability to separate a project into steps and goals. This software allows users to easily plan and organize their projects, allocate tasks, and keep their teams organized so that deadlines and goals are met.

Project management software enables users to collaborate on projects even when they’re on different continents. It allows all team members to update tasks simultaneously so they can get more done together. This feature is especially useful for remote teams that need to work together on the same project.

Project managers can use the software to monitor the progress of their team members, track project milestones, and ensure that everything is on schedule. This feature is particularly useful for larger projects that require a lot of coordination and communication between team members.

Additionally, project management software can help teams manage their resources more effectively. The software can be used to assign tasks to team members, track their progress, and ensure that everyone is working on the right tasks at the right time. This feature is especially useful for teams that need to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

What Software is Required for Project Management?

Project management software is an essential tool for any organization that wants to stay on top of its projects and ensure that they are completed on time and within budget. There are many different types of project management software available, each with its own unique set of features and capabilities. In this section, we will discuss the software that is required for project management and what each of these tools can do.

A)Project Management Software

Each of these software options offers different features, such as task management, team collaboration, and project tracking. It is important to choose the software that best fits the needs of your organization.

Communication Tools

Communication is key in any project, and having the right communication tools can make all the difference. Some of the most popular communication tools for project management include:

Slack

Microsoft Teams

Zoom

Skype

These tools allow team members to communicate with each other in real-time, share files and documents, and collaborate on projects.

B)Time Tracking Tools

Time tracking tools are essential for project management, as they allow team members to track the time they spend on each task. This information can then be used to estimate future project timelines and budgets. Some popular time tracking tools include:

– Toggl

– Harvest

– Clockify

– RescueTime

These tools allow team members to track their time, set project budgets, and generate reports on project progress.

In conclusion, project management software, communication tools, and time tracking tools are all essential for successful project management. By choosing the right software and tools for your organization, you can ensure that your projects are completed on time and within budget.

What are the Three Types of Software Project Management?

There are three main types of software project management: Agile, Waterfall, and Hybrid. Each of these types has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, making them suitable for different types of projects.

#1  Agile Project Management

Agile project management is a flexible and iterative approach to software development that focuses on delivering working software in short iterations. It emphasizes collaboration, customer satisfaction, and adaptability to change. Agile project management is ideal for projects where the requirements are unclear or constantly changing, as it allows for flexibility and quick responses to changing requirements.

Agile project management is characterized by the following practices:

– Continuous delivery of working software

– Self-organizing teams

– Iterative and incremental development

– Emphasis on customer satisfaction and collaboration

– Adaptability to change

2. Waterfall Project Management

Waterfall project management is a linear and sequential approach to software development that emphasizes planning and control. It involves completing each phase of the project before moving on to the next, with little room for changes or adjustments. Waterfall project management is ideal for projects where the requirements are well-defined and unlikely to change.

Waterfall project management is characterized by the following practices:

– Sequential and linear development

– Emphasis on planning and control

– Little room for changes or adjustments

– Clear and well-defined requirements

– Phases include initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closure.

#3  Hybrid Project Management

Hybrid project management is a combination of Agile and Waterfall project management. It allows for flexibility and adaptability to change while still maintaining control and structure. Hybrid project management is ideal for projects that have some well-defined requirements but also require flexibility and adaptability to change.

Hybrid project management is characterized by the following practices:

– Combines Agile and Waterfall practices

– Emphasizes both flexibility and control

– Allows for changes and adjustments while maintaining structure

Conclusion

Overall, the choice of software project management approach will depend on the specific requirements and constraints of the project. Each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses, and project managers should carefully consider which approach is best suited for their project.

  20. I subdue every negative nature that does not allow me to excel or finish any good thing successfully, in the name of Jesus.
  21. I deceive the end of the era of the “start and fail” over my life, in the name of Jesus.

  23. Henceforth, I decree that there shall be no unfinished project or vision in my hands and life, in the name of Jesus.
  24. I receive the fire to accomplish all my abandoned projects, in Jesus’ name.
  25. My appointed time shall never elude me, in the name of Jesus.
  26. Lord, let the blessings I have been waiting for come now, in the name of Jesus.
  27. Every strange spirit that has been tormenting me, I bind it and cast it out, in the name of Jesus.
  28. My life shall be fixed up overnight, in the name of Jesus.

The Christian Faith. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

MEMORY VERSE: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8. (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Isaiah 1:18-19 (KJV)

18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

LESSON INTRODUCTION: There are diverse views, both within and without, about the Christian faith. Some call it a religion, while others say it is a way of life. In some quarters, it is believed that it is a personal relationship with God. What exactly is the tenet of our faith as Christians and how does it compare with other faiths? Is it a religion or a relationship?

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. A CALL TO A RELATIONSHIP
  2. MORE THAN A RELIGION

1. A CALL TO A RELATIONSHIP

Simply put, religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman – with controlling power, especially a personal God or gods (Exodus 34:14). In that respect, Christianity can be classified as a religion.

However, practically speaking, Christianity has a key difference that separates it from other belief systems that are considered religions. Most religions are man-centred.

They are built upon the concept that man can reach a higher power – God, through his efforts – good works, sacrifices, rituals, etc. In that regard, Christianity is not a religion.

Just as the Jewish leaders made a religion out of a relationship with God, many people do the same with Christianity. They follow the way of the Pharisees in creating rules not found in Scripture (Mark 7:8). Some who profess to follow Christ are merely following man-made religion in the name of Jesus (Colossians 2:8).

While claiming to believe Scripture, they are often plagued with fear and doubt that they may not be good enough to earn salvation or that God will not accept them if they do not carry out some ritualistic activities or perform to a certain standard (Ephesians 2:8-9). The leaders of religious sects add many of their own rules to make it even more cumbersome (Matthew 15:9).

They pride themselves on their ability to keep the Law – at least outwardly. This is religion masquerading as Christianity: it is one of Satan’s favourite tricks (Matthew 23:1-7).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention other reasons why the Christian faith is more than a religion.

2. A CALL TO A RELATIONSHIP

The Christian faith is a relationship that God has established with His children. The Bible states clearly that there is nothing man can do to make himself right with

God (Isaiah 64:6). God did for us what we cannot do for ourselves (Colossians 2:13; 2 Corinthians 5:21). Our sin separates us from His presence, and sin must be punished (Romans 6:23).

However, because God loves us, He took our punishment upon Himself (Isaiah 53:5). All we must do is to accept God’s gift of salvation by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The grace-based relationship between God and man is the foundation of Christianity and the opposite of religion (Titus 2:11-14). We love God because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).

Holiness and obedience to Scripture are important, but they are pieces of evidence of a transformed heart, not a means to attain it. God desires that we be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). He wants us to grow in grace and the knowledge of Him (2 Peter 3:18).

We do these things because we are His children and want to be like Him. God wants us to know Him, draw near to Him, pray to Him, and love Him above everything. That is not religion; that is a relationship.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Mention encounters you have in your faith that shows you clearly that you are in a relationship with God.

CONCLUSION: Christianity is not about signing up for a religion. Christianity is about being born into the family of God (John 3:3).

QUESTIONS:

  1. What is religion?
  2. Explain the Christian faith.

ASSIGNMENT: Write five differences between the Christian faith and other faiths. (2×5=10 marks).

*Introducing the Lesson*
_____________________
Psalms 65 and 115 describe two different aspects of life. In Psalm 65, David rejoiced in God for answering
prayer and forgiving sins, He praised God for His great power and
blessings. Psalm 115, on the other hand, describes those who are going
through adversity. They know God is sovereign and resides in heaven, but the physical evidence is not there.
The Psalmist provided hope in adversity. The people needed to trust
God and praise Him because of who He is even in difficult circumstances. Both psalms remind us that we are to glorify God, our Sovereign King, in all
circumstances.

*Commentary and Application*
_____________________
*1. Glorify the Living God*
A. Our Loving God
*Psalm 115:1-2*

The people of Israel were
experiencing adversity. The Psalmist does not tell us what that adversity was, but the people recognised that ít
somehow reflected on God’s ability to protect and provide for His people. Thus, they prayed, “Not to us, O
Lord, not to us” (Psalm 115:1). They were not asking God to deliver them from their adversity for their sake to
relieve their distress. They were calling on God to do something to
restore honour and glory to His
name. God had promised Moses of His “unfailing love and faithfulness
Exodus 34:6). It did not seem that God was fulfilling His commitment toward His people.

lsrael’s adversity and God’s seeming inability o or lack of desire to
help His people brought a sarcastic response from the nations around
Israel (Psalm 115:2). These nations knew of God’s great power. They had heard how God had delivered the Israelites from Egypt (see Joshua
3:9-11; 6:1; 5:1). Perhaps some of these nations had experienced
defeat at the hands of the Israelites.
The nations’ taunting remark in Psalm 115:2 reflected not only on

God’s people and their relationship with Him, but on His abilty to help
and defend His people.
God’s people were asking God, “Why are you letting these rnations dishonor you?” They Could not
understand why God would not respond to the taunt of these ungodly
people and defend himself.

When we are experiencing
adversity, we may wonder, Where is
God in our adversity? Those who know we believe in God’s power to
save and deliver may question God’s
integrity and ability to help.

_What examples can you give that demonstrate the loving and kind nature of God, either from your life personally or from what you have seen God do in someone else’s life?_

_Why is it good for us that God does what He pleases?_

_Why is it important that God’s throne is not on the Earth, but in the heavens?_

B. The Futility of ldols
*Psalm 115:3-8*
Psalm 115:3-8 presents a great contrast between the God of Israel
and the idols of the heathens. The heathens could see their idols; they could not see Israel’s God. The Psalmist thundered back in defence by proclaiming the sovereignty of God. God is not an unmovable, impersonal God. He has a heart of love that is moved to action on behalf of His children. The unseen God is all-powerful. He is in heaven and “he does as he wishes” (verse 3, NLT). He cannot be manipulated. Even if ít
seems He is withholding help from His people He is not powerless to help.

The heathens’ idols are man-made, unlike the invisible God who created the heavens and the Earth.
These idols are helpless. They have human characteristicS-mouths,
eyes, ears, hand, feet, and throats. But unlike their human counterparts, these parts have no ability to function in a meaningful way (verses 4-8; see
also Isaiah 44:9-20). The God of’heaven hèars, sees, and speaks
(Psalms 34:17; 33:13; 85:8). The enemies of God had ridiculed Him
and intimidated those who followed Him. Those who make and trust in idols are just like them and just as
foolish as their idols (Psalm 115:8). While the heathen insinuated that
Israel’s God was powerless or unwilling to help, they foolishly
believed that man-made idols could help them.

The apostle Paul explained the futility and ultimate demise of those who worship idols (Romans 1:22-32). Rejecting God leads one
further and further into sin. We live in a time when people often ridicule us for believing in God. They claim that
God is a crutch for the weak. The Bible, however, declares that God is the Creator of heaven and the Earth. He is the Sovereign God over all creation. As such we can trust Him, even in adversity.

*Questions for Application*
____________________
_What are some things people worship today that are as powerless and unable to respond as ancient idols?_

_How do these verses about God help yOu see Him in a personal way?_

*2. Glorify the Mindful Master*
A. God Our Helper and Shield
*Psalm 115:9-11*
The Psalmist followed his description of the foolishness of idols
and those who worship them with a call to trust God (Psalm 115:9-11).
How different is the worship of God
from the worship of idols. The Psalmist’s call went out to three
groups:

(1) The whole nation was to trust God. God had called them to be
His special people (Deuteronomy 26:17-19). They were not to forsake Him.

(2) The prieststhe spiritual leaders–were to trust God. At times
the priests were unfaithful to their
calling and the nation suffered Ezekiel 22:26: Malachi 2:7-9).

(3) “All you who fear the Lord” (Psalm
115:11, NLT) —Which would even include those outside of the covenant
of Israelwere to trust God.

Three times the Psalmist
provided the reason people are to trust God: “He is your helper and your shield” (Psalm 115:9-11). The ídols
mentioned in Psalm 115:4-7 could
not help anyone. They were lifeless. But the living God will help all who put their trust in Him.

God would be their “shield” to protect them from their enemies. The
people of lsrael had faced the Red Sea when Pharaoh and his army
were advancing, but God did not forsake them. This was a constant
reminder to God’s people of His faithfulness. They could trust in Him.

God’s promise of help and protection is coupled with the command to trust Him. As believers,
we need to trust God when the way seems uncertain. We cannot trust in uncertain riches (Proverbs 11:28; 1 Timothy 6:17). We cannot trust in governments, We can only trust in the God who dwells in heaven.

_Name one or two situations from your life where you can say that God has been your Helper and Shield._

_Discuss the role of trust in the believer’s life. How has your trust grown, or how does it need to grow?_

B. God Blesses Those Who Fear Him
*Psalm 115:12–18*
The Psalmist began Psalm 115 with the lament that God had seemingly forsaken Israel. However, he concluded this psalm with words of encouragement. God has indeed remembered His people (verses 12-13). Just as the Psalmist named three groups of people in verses
(9-11, he named three groups here: “the people of Israel,” the priests,”
and “those who fear the Lord, both great and lowly.” God makes no
distinction among the laity, the priesthood, and the social outcasts.
All who place their trust in Him are His people and receive His blessings.

Even though God’s people may experience adversity, God does not
forget them, They are His covenant people and “He has remembered his
promise to love and be faithful to Israel” (Psalm 98:3, NLT). He promised to bless them through
delivering them from their aflictions and fulfilling His promises toward them.

Psalm 115:14–18 is a prayer for God’s blessing. God’s blessings are
for all generations (verse 14). As Creator, God has the power and
ability to bless His people. He sovereignly rules over everything He
created (verse 16). Even though God is in heaven (verse 3), He is still
concerned about people on the Earth. He has assigned humanity to
rule over and care for the Earth (see Genesis 1:28; 2:15). Everything we do is to serve and honour God.

In Psalm 115:14-18, the
Psalmist prays a blessing over God’s
people. In verses 17-18, the people have the opportunity and
responsibility to bless God through praise. Even in adversity the Psalmist taught that God is their Helper and Shield. Even if He has not yet delivered them, they can still praise Him.

Praise is an important part of our walk with Christ. We need to learn to Pralse God even during the difficult
times. Even when we do not see Him at work, He is still God. For this He
deserves our praise.

*3. Glorify the Awesome Provider*
A. God Provides for Our Spiritual Needs
*Psalm 65:1-8*
The people of Israel had come to Jerusalem (Zion) to worship God in
His temple (Psalm 65:1). God had answered their prayers and they
committed to fulfilling their “vows. Their “vows” were their promises to
worship God because of who He is and for His provision (see Psalm
56:12; 61:8; 66:13-15). While God’s people recognise God’s majesty and power, the scope of worship extends
beyond the nation. “All of us” (Psalm 65:2, NLT) or “all flesh” (KJV) refers
to “all humanity.”

One of the reasons the Israelites came to Jerusalem was to offer
sacrifices for forgiveness. They had
experienced the overwhelming guilt
of sin (verse 3; see 32:1-7). God is faithful to forgive, in spite of their sin. Because they found forgiveness,
they could worship with joy as they “dwell in his holy courts” (Psalm 65:4,
KJV). In the same way, when we dwell in God’s forgiveness and
presence, we will experience His joy
and worship Him.

God also provides security and salvation (verses 5-8). God ís our
“Savior.” God has displayed His majestic power through “awesome deeds.” We can see God’s mighty
power through creation (verse 6).
The “raging oceans” posed no threat
because God had created them
(verse 7). Israel’s history is full of accounts where God delivered His
people from their enemies, adversity,
and provided for thenm in times of famine. God “silenced the shouting
of the nations” (verse 7, NLT).

Yet God’s mighty power was not for Israel alone; it was for the other
nations as well (verse 8). Israel was to be a testimony of God’s
faithfulness and proclaim His faith-
fulness to other nations so they too could experience God’s salvation and provision.

For Israel, God was “the hope of everyone on earth” (verse 5, NLT). In
the same way, Jesus is the hope of our world. Through Him we find
forgiveness of sin and stand in awe of His mighty power on our behalf. Like the Psalmist, with joy we praise
Him and proclaim His name to all nations.

B. God Provides for
Our Physical Needs

*Psalm 65:9-13*
Ancient Israel was largely an agricultural society. They learned to
trust God for His care of them by His care of the land (Psalm 65:9).
Everything we read in this psalm describes God’s abundance. The
streams are full of water. He makes the ground “rich and fertile” (verse 9, NLT). While they prepared the fields, they could depend on God to supply the water to grow their crops. Thus
He drenches “the plowed ground with rain” (verse 10, NLT). The early
rain gave cropsa good start and the latter rain helped the crops mature
and produce abundant harvests (verse 11). In an arid land where grass was often scarce, the rain transformed the wilderness into “lush
pasture” (verse 12, NLT) to supply food for their sheep (verse 13). The
Psalmist depicted the e Earth as rejoicing at God’s abundant blessing on it.

The abundant outpouring of God’s care and provision is a sign of
His gracious mercy through the forgiveness of sin. While lsrael were
God’s special people who were chosen to receive His blessing, the
appeal of this psalm reaches far beyond lsraeldesires that a
beyond Israel to everyone in the world (verse 2). God desires that “all fiesh” (KJV) experience His saving
grace through Christ. He wants to restore all humanity to His original
purpose for which He created this world. Our responsibility is to tell
about God’s saving grace, the forgiveness of sins, and the blessings God desires to pour out on those who serve Him (Matthew 28:19-20).

e-Commerce Statistics: Some Amazing Statistics That You Should Know

e-Commerce Statistics: Some Amazing Statistics That You Should Know

The internet has changed people’s lives in numerous ways. From the way we look for information to the way we buy things. Nothing can stop the fast development of this immersion into the new technologies that we have now reached the point where we can no longer even imagine our lives without the internet.

In such a reality, people are trying to adapt their lives and to get the best out of it. They want to improve their lives and become more efficient. Why would they go to the restaurant for dinner if they can order food? Why would they spend time shopping when they can order everything they need in less than ten minutes? There is a constant trend to use the internet, not only to find out information but to get things done.

Buyers and sellers

On the one hand, we have buyers, people who try to make their lives easier and better by buying online. Regardless if we talk about making grocery shopping quick and easy, or ordering an item from abroad. The internet enables fulfilling those needs and the ability to obtain something you could not even imagine two decades ago. Besides convenience, online shopping also provides a great selection of products and services, as well as competitive prices. This is something that provides an incredible advantage over any local retail.

Due to the growing expansion of the internet and the fact that new generations are growing up with the internet experience being part of their lives from the early days, the number of digital buyers is constantly on the rise. From 1.32 billion digital buyers in 2014, this number is expected to grow to more than 2 billion by 2020.

The estimated number of digital buyers worldwide

On the other hand, we have people who create or simply resell products through the usage of the internet. These sellers are turning to the internet as a tool to run their business and ultimately earn their living. Some are choosing the existing platforms specialized in the sale of goods, such as eBay, while others have decided to create their own online stores.

Either way, the goal is to reach consumers and encourage them to buy. As a seller, your goal is first to reach the digital buyers, and then persuade them to buy from you, using a series of promotional activities, online interaction, etc.

E-commerce

Buyers and sellers together make up e-commerce, short for electronic commerce. E-commerce is the transaction between a buyer and a seller, which is done through online technologies. It is the process of using the internet to buy or sell online.

Despite the fact that e-commerce is something available to anyone and in spite of how easy it might be to start selling products and services online, there are many struggles to make this business viable and actually capitalize your efforts in the digital world. As the market gets saturated, day by day, it becomes even more difficult to place your products on that market.

A modern consumer is overwhelmed with numerous advertising messages each day. He is also mobile, which means easy access to the information and ability to buy on the go. A modern consumer is also doubtful and equivocal. Faced with plenty of choices and alternatives, a modern consumer needs to make decisions on a daily basis.

All of this shapes the approach of modern businesses whose goal is to reach that modern consumer and persuade him that theirs is the product they should buy. It is not an easy task, but with the right strategy and tools, you should be able to introduce and position your company in the e-commerce market.

E-commerce statistics

Getting started with e-commerce is a process that requires learning about different aspects that influence setting up and running an e-commerce website. It is also helpful to have in mind the e-commerce statistics that provide a glimpse into the importance of this industry and the trends that are tremendously shaping the way strategy is implemented.

• Millennials and Gen Xers are similar in their likelihood to buy online—more than 90% of internet users in both age groups have made a digital purchase in the past year. However millennials are more likely to research products or make a purchase via their smartphone. (eMarketer)
• In 2015, the global population amounted to around 7.3 billion people, of which 1.4 billion people purchased goods and/or services online at least once. In total, they spent $2,272.7bn online, which results in an average spending per e-shopper of $1,582. (EcommerceWiki)
• Worldwide retail sales—including in-store and internet purchases—will surpass $22 trillion in 2015, up 5.6% from 2014. Retail e-commerce sales, those purchased over the Internet, will make up 7.4% of the total retail market worldwide, or $1.671 trillion. By 2019, that share will jump to $3.578 trillion, yet retail e-commerce will account for just 12.8% of retail purchases. (eMarketer)
• About 71% of consumers are shopping online to find the best price. (IBM)

• 53% of global internet users have made an online purchase in 2016. (SocialMediaToday)
• Primary reason for digital shoppers in the United States to abandon their carts is the cost of shipping. (Statista)
• Nine out of 10 of the survey participants said free shipping was the No. 1 incentive when asked what would make them shop online more often. (MarketingLand)
• Average e-commerce conversion rate vary from 3% to 4%. (SocialMediaToday)
• 42 percent of online shoppers worldwide stated that they preferred to pay via credit card, while 39% preferred PayPal. (Statista)
• In 2017, global B2C e-commerce sales are expected to reach 2,143 billion U.S. dollars. (Statista)
• Customer satisfaction is the number one success metric for marketers today. (Salesforce)
• 39% of people will stop engaging with a website if it takes too long to load. (SocialMediaToday)
• Eighty-eight percent of shoppers characterize detailed product content as being extremely important. (Forbes)
• Over 90% of people buying on Amazon wouldn’t purchase an item with less than three stars. (Forbes)
• One-click checkouts and e-wallets will become a game-changer in 2017. (HuffingtonPost)
• 75% of people participate in web rooming to find the lowest price, while 72% do it to compare the products. (RetailPerceptions)
• The main reasons why customers webroom over a showroom is because they don’t want to pay for shipping (47%) and because they like to go to a store and touch and feel the product before they buy it. (Shopify)
• Social commerce accounted for 5% of ecommerce. But predictions are healthy and show a 25% growth rate over the next five years. Mobile ads are the backbone of this growth. (HuffingtonPost)
14
• Mobile remains a powerful upward force for e-commerce. US retail e-commerce will climb 43.2% in 2016, paced by a 78.3% jump in sales via smartphones. (eMarketer)
• In 2015, mobile commerce accounted for 30 percent of all U.S. e-commerce in 2015, and U.S. retail e-commerce dollars are projected to grow to almost 482 billion in 2018. (PointSource)
• 56% of smartphone or tablet users intend to utilize their devices to search for and/or buy gifts this holiday season. (Invesp)
With the analysis of the data from numerous researches on the state of e-commerce, the following can be concluded:
• The E-commerce market is expanding each year
• Mobile commerce is increasing its share in the overall e-commerce
• It is important to understand the profile of digital buyers
• Digital buyers want a quick and easy way to buy online
• They also want the best price and free shipping
• Webrooming is slowly taking over showrooming.

Rest And Recognition. AG Sunday School Teen Manual

Text: Exodus 20:1-12; 23:12; Isaiah 58:13-14; Eph 6:1-3′ Col 3:20

KEY VERSE: Ephesians 6:2-3
“Honour your father and your mother”- which is the first commandment with a promise – “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (NIV)

Focus

Recognizing the Sabbath and respecting our parents are both issues of honour. But these commands may also be a little more awkward to deal with, since many people tend to view them as irrelevant in contemporary society. After all, most people are too busy to give serious consideration to a whole day of rest. And defying parents is simply regarded as teens testing the boundaries of independence. But God’s commands never go out of style. And His benefits never diminish. If we will honour God in these areas of life, He will honour us as well.

As you prepare for this session, consider your own regard for these relevant instructions. Be open with students about your shortcomings – and what you’ve learned from experience. And be willing to adjust your lifestyle to enjoy the benefits of greater trust in God.

The Basic Message: Explain to students..

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

Following God’s commands honours Him and benefits us.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

We suffer unnecessary emotional, physical, and spiritual weariness by failing to honour God in our time and relationships.

HOW DO I LIVE IT?

Honour God by reserving a day for worship and refreshment and by demonstrating godly respect for your parents.

>>Study Overview: Explain that today’s study considers…
• How observing a weekly day of rest and worship provides an opportunity to honour God and be personally refreshed.
• That the way we treat our parents reflects our respect to God.
• How following God’s commands may not always seem realistic, but brings definite benefits.

Inform and Discuss

a). Remember the Sabbath

>>Teacher Hint: Explain that the Israelites Viewed the Sabbath reminder that God had set them apart (Exo 31:13) and that He had delivered them from the bondage of hard labour in Egypt (Deut 5:15) With the development of the synagogue during Jewish exile. The Sabbath became a day of rest, but also for worship and the study of His Law.

1. Read or have a volunteer read Exo 20:8-11. Why do you think God issued this command? [Hint: When we reserve a day for rest and worship, we honour God and His power. By following His command for rest, we demonstrate trust in God rather than in ourselves.

2. Read or have volunteers read Exo 23:12; Isa 58:13-14. What kinds of things might be regarded as “doing as you please” or “going your own way” rather than observing a day of rest and worship?

Guide: Explain that our bodies and minds are not designed for nonstop wear and tear. God created us with a need for physical and emotional rest as well as a need for fellowship with him. When we follow God’s pattern for weekly rest and refreshment we will usually work more productively and maintain a more positive attitude.

3. Do you think it is realistic for Christians today to try to set aside an entire day for God? Why or why not? [Guide: Explain that today’s hurried pace makes many people to think that they’ve got too much to do to give the Lord an entire day. But we should not forget that God gave this Command because He loves us and wants us to live fulfilled, healthy lives.

b. Respect Your Parents
1. Read or have a volunteer read Exod 20:12. What does it mean to honour your parents? Why does God require it? [Hint: God expects us to respond properly to parents and guardians, acting in kindness, support, and respect, even when it’s tough.

2. Read or have a volunteer read Col 3:20. How does this command apply in situations where parents have been irresponsible or ungodly? [Hint: By obeying our imperfect parents, we demonstrate honour, not because they are worthy – although most are – but because God commanded it. In honouring them, we honour God.]

3. How can a Christian teen’s actions affect his or her relationships with non-Christian parents? [Hint: Teens’ actions can set an example and influence their parents for Christ.

Guide: Explain that harbouring bitterness or resentment toward parents, regardless of their relationship with God, will ultimately harm us emotionally, physically, and spiritually. God calls us to respond graciously at all times, depending on Him to help us deal with negative emotions.

>>Teacher Hint: Be sensitive to students from difficult or dysfunctional family situations. If a teen feels there is no way to endure a family situation, he or she should talk to a trusted godly adult. Above all, encourage students to trust God, who offers the grace needed to give proper honour to the authorities in our lives.

4. What should teens do if the desires, advice, or instructions of their parents go against God’s will or instructions? [Hint: Unless a parents’ advice will cause undue harm or provoke us to defy God, we should give them the benefit of the doubt and obey. When the time comes to make decisions our parents don’t agree with, we must do so graciously, not in arrogance, defiance, or bitterness.]

5. Read or have a volunteer read Eph 6:1-3. Why do you think God gives this promise? What does it mean? (Guide: Explain that this doesn’t mean that if a person dies young it’s because he or she broke this command. This promise was both specific to individuals and general to all of Israel. If they honoured their God-given authorities, God would honour them with various physical and spiritual blessings.

Involve Them: PARENTAL POP QUIZ

Ask students to take a few moments to analyze their relationships with their parents/guardians in the following areas captured in the table below, using a scale from “almost never” to “almost always. “Then, have them prayerfully consider the questions regarding their relationship with their parents/guardians in the “Reflection” sections, and finally complete the “action” questions.

REFLECTION: 1. What are some of the areas of strength in your relationship with them? |2. What tare some of the areas in your relationship with them that you would like to improve? |3. What are some specific thing you could do to repair, rebuild, or strengthen your relationship with them?

ACTION: What would you like to do in the next week to express your love for your parents and your desire to strengthen your relationship with them?

Inspire Them: Remind students of “The Basic Message” of this study (pg 57), explain WHAT the Big Idea behind the study is; WHY it matters; and HOW we can live the lesson captured in the study.

Ministry Activity: PERKS FOR PARENTS
Ask students to suggest specific ways that we can honour – or dishonour- our parents. List their responses in two columns on the board. Then, challenge them to commit to at least one positive action that would bless their parents this week.

Invitation Option: If you have students who are yet to give their lives to Jesus, give them opportunity to respond to His offer of forgiveness and eternal life. Pray with them as they commit their lives to His leadership.

Teacher Hint: Ask yourself…

1. Do students understand the reasons and benefits of taking an entire day for worship and refreshment?
2. Do students see that honouring parents is a way of honouring God?
3. Have students determined specific ways to honour their parents this week?

Theophany. RCCG Sunday School Student Manual.

TOPIC: Theophany

MEMORY VERSE: “And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.” – Exodus 34:5 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 18:1-3, 16-22 (KJV)

Genesis 18:1-3
18 And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

Genesis 18:16-22
16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

17 And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

20 And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very grievous;

21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The term “Theophany” comes from the Ancient Greek theophaneia, meaning “appearance of a deity.” Specifically, a “theophany” is a visible or tangible manifestation of God. In its most restrictive sense, it is a visible appearance of God in the Old Testament period, often, but not always, in human form. The use of the term “theophany” is restricted here to manifestations of God in temporary forms visible to the eyes (not in dreams). A frequent introduction for theophanies may be seen in the phrase “the Lord came down” (Genesis 11:5; Exodus 34:5).

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. CATEGORIES AND BIBLICAL INSTANCES
  2. THE INCARNATION OF CHRIST

1. CATEGORIES AND BIBLICAL INSTANCES

Some of the tangible or visible manifestations of God are found in three categories: appearance as a man, non-human form, and appearance as an angel.

A. Appearance As A Man: Biblical instances include:
Genesis 18:1-3, 13, 17 – Abraham had some visitors: two angels and God Himself. He invited them to come to his home, and he and Sarah entertained them.
Genesis 32:22-30 – Jacob wrestled with what appeared to be a man, but was God (vs.28-30).
Daniel 3:23-25 – The fourth man in the fire is none other than God.

B. Non-Human Form:
Exodus 24: 16-18 – Frequently, the term “glory of the Lord” reflects a theophany.
Deuteronomy 31:14-15 – God appeared to Moses and Joshua in the transfer of leadership to Joshua “…in a pillar of cloud….”

C. Appearance As “The Angel of the LORD”: This is also called “Angelophany.” There is a difference between “an angel” and “the Angel of the Lord.” The Angel of the Lord usually refers to himself as the Lord or God in the Old Testament. It is not every appearance of angels that is a theophany. Biblical instances include:
Genesis 16:7-14 – The angel of the Lord appears to Hagar. The angel speaks as God himself in the first person, and in verse 13 Hagar identifies “the LORD that spoke to her” as “The God” Who sees.”
Genesis 22:11-12 – The angel of the Lord appears to Abraham and refers to himself as God in the first person.
Genesis 31:11-13 – “The angel of God” says, “…I am the God of Beth-el”.

2. THE INCARNATION OF CHRIST

The pre-incarnate appearance of Christ (in the Old Testament) is called “Christophany.” Jesus is the fulfilment of God’s presence. He is the one to which every theophany – in the Old Testament – was pointing (Hebrews 1:1-3; John 1:1, 14).

However, the incarnation of Christ is different from the Old Testament instances of theophany. The Old Testament theophanies are preliminary – they foreshadow and prefigure the coming of Christ in the flesh. The coming of Christ is their fulfillment – their climax (Matthew 5:17). In addition, Christ’s incarnation is permanent, while the theophanies in the Old Testament were temporary. It is through Jesus that we will finally and fully experience the presence of God with us (Revelation 21:1-4).

The class should discuss why they believe Christ is the fullness of God’s presence any man could wish for.

CONCLUSION: The main point of a theophany is to know that God is present with humanity. That is ultimately expressed through Christ.

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention the three categories of the visible manifestations of God.
  2. Explain the incarnation of Christ.

ASSIGNMENT: Write five reasons people still doubt God’s existence despite the pieces of evidence in the Scriptures and around us. (2×5=10 marks).

A frequent introduction for theophanies may be seen in the phrase “the Lord came down” (Genesis 11:5;Exodus 34:5).

LESSON AIM: To teach the church some temporary forms God takes to appear to His people.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through this study, students are expected to:
a. Know what theophany means in clear terms
b. Understand the difference between theophany and other divine manifestations of God.
c. Discover people who experienced theophany in the Bible.
d. Distinguish between theophany and Christ’s incarnation.
e. Understand the significance of theophany.

TEACHING PLAN:

To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion; do class activities and the assignment.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, mark attendance and assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outlines, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give an assignment.

LESSON OUTLINE

LESSON OUTLINE 1: CATEGORIES AND CATEGORIES AND BIBLICAL INSTANCES
LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE INCARNATION OF CHRIST

1. CATEGORIES AND BIBLICAL INSTANCES

A. Some of the tangible or visible manifestations of God are found in three categories: appearance as a man, non-human form, and appearance as ‘The angel of the LORD’.

B. Biblical instances of God’s appearance:

  1. As a Man:
    i. Genesis 18:1-3, 13, 17 – Abraham had some visitors: two angels and God Himself. He invited them to come to his home, and he and Sarah entertained them.
ii. Genesis 32:22-30 – Jacob wrestled with what appeared to be a man, but was God (vs.28-30).
iii. Daniel 3:23-25 – The fourth man in the fire is none other than God
  2. In Non-Human Form: i. Exodus 24:16-18 -Frequently, the term “glory of the Lord” reflects a theophany.
ii. Deuteronomy 31:14-15 – God appeared to Moses and Joshua in the transfer of leadership to Joshua “…in a pillar of cloud….”
  3. As “The Angel of the LORD”: This is also called “Angelophany.” There is a difference between “an angel” and “the Angel of the LORD.” The Angel of the LORD usually refers to himself as the LORD or God in the Old Testament. It is not every appearance of angels that is a theophany.
    i. Genesis 16:7-14-The angel of the LORD appears to Hagar. The angel speaks as God Himself in the first person, and in verse 13 Hagar identifies “the LORD that spoke to her” as “The God” Who sees.”
ii. Genesis 22:11-12-The angel of the LORD appears to Abraham and refers to Himself as God in the first person.
iii. Genesis 31:11-13-“The angel of God” says, “…I am the God of Beth-el”.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should share with the class any of the above categories of theophany, they have encountered God.

LESSON OUTLINE 2. THE INCARNATION OF CHRIST

A. The pre-incarnate appearance of Christ (in the Old Testament) is called “Christophany.”
i. Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s presence.
ii. He is the one to which every theophany- in the Old Testament – was pointing (Hebrews 1:1-3; John 1:1, 14).

B. However, the incarnation of Christ is different from the Old Testament instances of theophany:
i. The Old Testament theophanies are preliminary – they foreshadow and prefigure the coming of Christ in the flesh.
ii. The coming of Christ is their fulfillment – their climax (Matthew 5:17).
iii. In addition, Christ’s incarnation is permanent
iv. The theophanies in the Old Testament were temporary.

C. It is through Jesus that we will finally and fully experience the presence of God with us (Revelation 21:1-4).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss why they believe Christ is the fullness of God’s presence any man could wish for.

CONCLUSION: The main point of a theophany is to know that God is present with humanity. That is ultimately expressed through Christ.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention the three categories of the visible manifestations of God.
  2. Explain the incarnation of Christ.

EVALUATION: Teachers should ask the students to distinguish between Old Testament theophany and the re-incarnation of Christ in at least three (3) ways.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, saturate my life with your manifold presence.

ASSIGNMENT: Write five reasons people still doubt God’s existence despite the pieces of evidence in the Scriptures and around us. (2×5=10 marks).
