BIBLE PASSAGE: ACTS 6:2-7 (King James Version)

2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.

3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.

5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. MENTAL HEALTH DEFINED
  2. CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: MENTAL HEALTH DEFINED

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines Mental Health as a state of well-being in which every individual can carry out four roles:

a. Realise his/her potentials.

b. Cope with normal stress of life.

c. Work productively.

d. Participate meaningfully in the community.

Mental Health includes our emotional, physiological and social well being.

Mental ill-health, in contrast, is a psychological disorder affecting one’s mood, thinking and  behavior. The term mental illness covers a broad range of disorders from mild depression to schizoprenia- a condition that impairs a person’s ability to think, feel process and respond to life situations in an appropriate way. Mental illness can distort our view of God and others and as well contribute to sinful behavior.

There are some cases of emotional issues in the Bible such as depression (1 Kings 19:1-4; John 4:3), loneliness (1 Kings 19:1)), hopelessness (1 Kings 17:9-12), suicide (Matt. 27:5), rejection (1 Sam. 18:7-8), insanity (Mark 5:1-5) etc.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS

God’s desire for believers is to live a peaceful and fulfilled life (Genesis 25:8; Jer. 29:11). However, there are some believers who are not operating in this realm of God’s intention for them. This may be as a result of some of these factors: childhood abuse (Prov. 17:22b), trauma/neglect (2 Sam. 13:19), loneliness (1 Kings 18:10), discrimination/oppression (James 2:6), poverty (Proverbs 10:15), loss of a loved one (2 Sam. 18:33), debt (Prov. 22:7), low self-esteem (Numbers 13:33), heavy workload/severe stress (1 Sam. 30:4,6) , family difficulties / challenges (Gen. 34:30) etc. in some cases, spiritual forces have a direct effect on mental health (1 Sam. 16:14; Mark 3:1-5).

To overcome mental ill-health and enjoy emotional well-being, believers must understand that:

  1. Failure and challenges are part of human life (Prov. 24:16; Romans 8:28; James 1:2-4).
  2. Investing in good social networks and godly relationships are important (2 Sam. 9:1).
  3. Loneliness and isolation are risk factors for depression and suicidal behavior should be avoided (Prov. 17:22).
  4. Good sleep helps the brain restore itself (Prov. 3:24; Jer. 31:26; Luke 8:23a).
  5. Regular exercise expunges toxic chemicals from the body (1 Timothy 4:8).
  6. Drug abuse (self medication) is not an option for good health.
  7. Healthy thoughts are necessary always (Prov. 4:8).

CONCLUSION: Good mental health is neccesary for good daily living. Therefore, take care of your health (body, soul and spirit).

QUESTIONS

  1. What is mental health ?
  2. Mention four (4) causes of mental ill-health and their solutions.

ASSIGNMENT

Identify five (5) Bible characters (in line with lesson outline 1) who had emotional issues and indicate the outcome of their isses whether POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE (2×5=10 Marks).

Rendering Help: RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto those who are of the household of faith”- Gal. 6:10.

Bible Passage: Acts 9:36-41.

Introduction

Rendering help is the act of giving and or assistance (whether material or services) to people in need. It can be in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility or personal assistance to the less privileged. More importantly, the Bible encourages us to help members of the household of faith.

OUTLINES

  1. WHO NEEDS OUR HELP
  2. HOW SHOULD WE HELP?

WHO NEEDS OUR HELP

The following people should be helped: the committed brethren in need (Gal. 6:10), the aged (Lev. 19:32), the widow/widowers (James 1:27), orphans and the deserted helpless (Ps. 82:3), the poor (Prov. 19:17), the specially challenged (emotional , physical, mental, etc), 2 Sam. 9:3,13. Our help should primarily be to our needy family members(which includes our parents)-1 Timo. 5:8), members of the household of faith (Gal. 6:1), then to members of our society whether known or unknown, good or bad. It is necessary to help brethren by connecting them to people or places to get good jobs , pay hospital bills , get scholarships for children education etc.

While this gestures should not be an excuse for some people to be lazy, indulge in begging or feel entitled, believers should note that everything we have is given to us by God (Ps. 68:19; 1 Cor. 4:7). Therefore, we should be encouraged to give to people in need or render services because these results in blessings (Prov. 22:9). Rendering help and expecting nothing back from the recipient is a great way to be Christ-like (Luke 6:34-35).

HOW SHOULD WE HELP?

As believers , it is important to know that the help we render should be rooted in love (1 Cor. 13:3) even as it allow us to serve God better (2 Cor. 9:8). Giving for instance, is an outward sign of our love for others (1 John 3:17) and we should give expecting God to provide (Luke 6:38). Sometimes, our giving can be a measurement of our faith (Mal. 3:10). However, the state of the heart of the giver matters more than the size of the gift (Luke 21:1-4).

While encouraging the believers in Corinth to give generously, Paul did not want them to give beyond their means , “reluctantly or under compulsion” (2 Cor. 8:12). More importantly, he wanted them to rely on their inner convictions (2 Cor. 9:7). No one should give under duress but giving , even when you are reluctant can be learning process especially when you do not have a surplus.

CONCLUSION: God loves it when we give (2 Cor. 9:7) and He will always pay back in ways we least imagine.

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention four (4) set of people that needs our help.
  2. How can believers meet the need of people.

ASSIGNMENT

Mention five (5) categories of people who are in need of help in the Church and the society at large (2×5=10 Marks).

  BIBLE PASSAGE: Leviticus 19:9-10.

INTRODUCTION

The God-man relationship is characterized by His Holiness, justice, love and mercy among others. Our relationships with one another and society have to be patterned according to the character of God. (Matt. 22:36-39). Therefore, it is our responsibility as God’s people to care for those around us (1 John 3:10). The attempt of the church to show love and alleviate the sufferings of the people in her immediate environment/community is termed Christian Social Responsibility.

OUTLINES

  1. MEANING AND BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
  2. BENEFITS OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

MEANING AND BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

Christian Social Responsibility (CSR) is a faith based obligation to meet societal needs through the demonstration of love that positively imparts communities and individuals. CSR has its roots in Christianity and the Church is meant to be an example for the world to follow. (MAtt. 5:16). It is an initiative for community relations and to partner with the government in achieving the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CSR could be in the areas of provision of basic amenities , healthcare delivery facilities , education , media , business support, entertainment , governance , sports etc. It involves strategically assessing social challenges and developing appropriate structured programmes to cater for them.

CSR is a core part of the ministry of the church. It is not a 21st Century concept, It has its origin in the bible. For instance, Leviticus 19:9-10; 23:22, instructs us to always make provision for the needy out of our income. In Matt. 14:15-21, Jesus demonstrated the need for CSR when He fed five thousand men (besides women and children). Also, the early Christians distributed wealth to take care of those in need (Acts 2:44-45).

BENEFITS OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The benefits of Christian Social Responsibility to the Church and the world are numerous:

  1. It enables people to actually see and know the meaning of God’s love (1 John 3:16-18).
  2. It meets the need of less privileged in the society.
  3. It promotes evangelism and entrenches the Church of God in the hearts and minds of the people we come across (Matt. 5:16).
  4. It embraces responsibilities for sustainable actions and encourages a positive impact on the environment.
  5. It compliments government’s efforts in improving and sustaining the standard of living of people in their immediate community.
  6. It will enable the church to build a good relationship with the community (Gal. 6:10).
  7. It help believers to represent Jesus physically in their communities (Prov. 13:17; 2 Cor. 5:20).

CONCLUSION

Christian Social Responsibility is not to seek commendation from men but to show the love of Christ and be a blessing to our community.

QUESTIONS
1. How can believers impact their immediate environment ?

2. Mention four (4)  benefits of CSR to the church and the world at large.

Christianity And Wealth. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: Both riches and honour comes of thee, and thou reignest over all, and in thine hand is power and might, and in thine hand is power and might, and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all”– 1 Chro. 29:12.

Bible Passage: Luke 12: 15-21.

Introduction

Wealth is the abundance of valuable possessions or money. When we have wealth, we have more than we need to sustain a normal life. The Bible contains several examples of people blessed by God with great wealth; Abram (Gen. 13:2); Jacob (Gen. 30:43). Solomon (1 Kings 10:23), Joanna (Luke 8:3) and Joseph of Arimathea (Matt. 27:57) among others. We shall consider what the Bible says about wealth and what should be beleiver’ disposition towards it.

OUTLINES

  1. BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES
  2. BELIEVERS DISPOSITION

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

The view of Christians on wealth should be derived from the scriptures. This is because wealth and honour comes from God. (1 Chro. 29:12). God often blesses His children with wealth when they pleases him (Deut. 28:1-5). The Bible establishes the fact that wealth and riches shall be in the house of the man that fears God (Ps. 112:1-3); money answers all things (Eccl. 10:19); to enjoy one’s wealth is a gift from God (Eccl. 5:19); money is a defence (Eccl. 7:12) and it makes many friends (Prov. 19:4).

However, the Bible also contains several warnings about wealth, among which is the fact that love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10); riches should not be trusted (Prov. 23:5; Luke 12:15); wealth gotten through the wrong means shall diminish (Prov. 13:11); all men will die and leave their wealth to others (Ps. 49:10); those who pursue wealth at the expense of other core values of life will never be satisfied (Eccl. 5:10a).

BELIEVERS’ DISPOSITION

Christians Should note that wealth has never been an accurate barometer of a person’s standing with God. Some righteous people are poor (Luke 16:20-23). How then should believers handle wealth? While it is not a sin for wealthy believers to enjoy their riches (Eccl. 5:19; 3 John 2), they should also see wealth as an investment entrusted to them by God (1 Chro. 29:12). This wealth must be used to enhance good and pursue God’s purposes.

Wealthy believers can initiate charities and scholarship programmes, promote cares for orphans, widows and the less privileged (1 John 3:17,18; James 1:27), and be instrumental in advancing God’s kingdom (Luke 8:3; Romans 16:3). It is important that believers prove themselves as faithful stewards , by channeling their wealth to godly legacies. (1 Cor. 4:2; Matt. 6:19-20).

CONCLUSION

In a bid to be wealthy , believers should always note that their first care should be for God’s kingdom and His righteousness (Matt. 6:33).

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention three (3) things the Bible says about wealth?
  2. How should believers handle wealth?

ASSIGNMENT

Mention the five (5) things believers must not do in their quest to be wealthy (2×5=10 Marks).

Break The Yoke Of Poverty. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse:” All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him”- Prov. 19:7.

Bible Passage: Prov. 6:9-11

INTRODUCTION

Generally, poverty can be described as a state of being extremely poor. Poverty can take different forms, mental, spiritual, material or financial. In the context of material/financial possessions, poverty is said to exist when people lack the means to satisfy their basic needs. Scriptures clearly state that even the brethren of the poor hate him (Prov. 19:7) and that poverty can destroy the poor (Prov. 10:15). What then causes poverty and can a believer break free from it?

OUTLINES

  1. CAUSES OF POVERTY
    2. BREAKING FREE FROM POVERTY

CAUSES OF POVERTY

While poverty can be in categories or degrees , several factors can be responsible for it.

  1. Personal attitudes which includes laziness/idleness (Prov. 18:4; 19:15); poor work ethics (Proverbs 14:23; 1 Thess. 3:10); lack of self-discipline (Prov. 12:27); stubbornness (Proverbs 13:18); drunkenness and gluttony (Prov. 23:21); worldliness and frivolous pursuits  (Prov. 21:17; 38:19); limitation mentality (Prov. 32:7a) etc.
  2. Natural disasters (famine, flood etc)- Gen. 12:10, health challenges (Mark 5:25-26), fire outbreaks (Job 1:16), daeth of a benefactor (2 Sam. 4:4).
  3. Oppression of others . Examples of oppression that can cause poverty include delayed wages (Lev. 19:13; 1 Timothy 5:18), exorbitant interest rate on loans (Ex. 22:25).
  4. Spiritual causes of poverty include the repercussion of sin (Deuteronomy 28:15-21) and wrong spiritual concepts as some believers equates poverty to holiness.

BREAKING FREE FROM POVERTY

You need to discover your purpose for living and diligently pursue it (Prov. 22:29). Gather sufficient information on how to improve yourself in your chosen career, vocation, or trade. (Prov. 18:15; 24:4). Be intentional about creating multiple streams of income (Eccl. 11:2). Find a problem around you that you can solve that will earn you good money. Acquire additional skills ; re-skill and up-skill (Prov. 9:9). Believe in yourself and have the “I can” attitude (Phil. 4:13).

Essentially, breaking free from poverty requires giving (Prov. 11:24); pay your tithes and offerings (Mal. 3:10-12), first fruit (Prov. 3:9-10), and give to those that are less privileged. Pray and study the word of God to know His perfect will for you in all your life’s endeavours (Ps. 37:23). Stop living in debts , borrow only to invest (Prov. 22:7).

CONCLUSION

Poverty is not pre-destined, therefore, change your mindset towards material wealth knowing that God gives the ‘power’ to get wealth (Deut. 8:18).

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention four (4) factors responsible for poverty.
  2. How can believers break free from poverty?

The Power OF Choice. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Let us choose to us judgement : let us know among ourselves what is good”-Job 34:4

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 13:8-13.

INTRODUCTION

Simply put, choice is the act of picking between two or more possibilities. The power of choice is the strong will to make a decision in the midst of several options. While it is generally opined that man is a choice being, Scriptures clearly establish that God has given man the power to choose. (Joshua 24:15), However, we live with the consequences of the choices we make whether good or bad. The onus lies on us to make the right choices which in turn determine the course of our lives.

OUTLINES

  1. COMMON CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES
  2. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCES CHOICES

COMMON CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES

There are several choices we make in life with their attendant consequences. For instance, the choices we make about food and exercises influences our physical health. (Prov. 25:16). The choices we make about our academic pursuits often affect our careers and obligations. The choices we make in reaction to life’s adversities affect our psychological well being (Prov. 24:10).

  1. The choice of where to live/settle may determine the peace or discomfort blessings or troubles we will have (Gen. 13:8-11, 19:13; 26:1-2, 12-13).
  2. The choice of who we marry will determine the bliss we enjoy or the blows we endure (Prov. 18:22; 31:28; Prov. 21:19; 1 Kings 11:4).
  3. The choice of the friends we keep will determine how far we go and the quality of life we live (Prov. 13:20; 18:24;2 Sam. 13:5;10-14,28-29).
  4. The choice we make to be different will determine whether or not we will stand out from the crowd (Dan. 1:8,19, Hebrews 11: 24-26).
  5. The choice we make whether to serve God or not will determine the eternal reward we will get (Joshua 24:15; Revelation 22:11-12).

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CHOICES

Many factors influence the choices we make in life. We need to crave for the right knowledge in order to be well informed (Prov. 18:15). Self-Control will help guide our choices and prevent us from making irrational decisions. (James 1:19; 1 Sam. 25:10). We must make good plans and be guided by a good vision before we make a choice. (Ruth 3:1-4; Prov. 16:3,9). More importantly , prayer will enable us to key into the mind of God. (1Sam. 30:7-8; Ps. 37:5,23).

Conversely, pride, hypocrisy, doubt, and negative thoughts among others will hinder us from making the right choices (Prov. 11:2; Ps. 10:4; Is. 32:6; James 1:8). We must strive to always have the correct mind frame all the time (Prov. 4:23).

CONCLUSION

If we have made a wrong choice in the past, it is time to forgive ourselves and move on with life as we make neccesary corrections to avoid any repetition of such.

1. Give three (3) examples of life’s choices and their consequences.

2. Mention some factors that can hinder us from making the right choices.

The Fruit Of The Holy Spirit. Part 2. RCCG Sunday School

Memory Verse: “And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace”– James 3:18.

Bible Passage: Gal. 5:16-18.

Introduction

The life of the Christian is a constant battle between our sinful nature and our new nature in Christ. (Gal. 5:17). Unfortunately, just because we have accepted Christ does not mean we are automatically immune to sinful temptations (Romans 7:14-25). Sometimes, it may feel like we are trapped in the desire to reach for the sinful thing rather than godly thing. This does not always have to be the case. We can overcome the flesh.

OUTLINES

  1. Choose to bear the fruit
  2. Work at it

CHOOSE TO BEAR THE FRUIT

Now that we are in Christ, we have the power to conquer the sinful desires of the flesh (2 Cor. 5:17; Romans 8:37). The very presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts means we can now choose godliness over sinfulness (Phil. 1:22). The choice is 100% ours. (Deut 30:19). We are no longer a slave to our sinful nature (ROmans 6:14’18). We can choose love over hare, patience over hostile frustration, faithfulness over disloyalty, self-control; over lustful desires…etc. This is the beauty of having the Holy Spirit. He gives us the POWER to fight (Phil. 2:13; 4:13). All we must do to tap into that power is to practice obedience to God’s word and His direction (John 15:4,10,14: Col. 3:16;Ps. 1:2-3).

WORK AT IT

Some Christians have asked if it possible to produce all the components of the fruit of the spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. This seems like a lot to work on. First, we should remember that God will not give us a load we cannot bear (Matt. 11:29-30). Second, the ‘yoke’ of bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit is not just possible , it is mandatory (Luke 1:37; Matt. 5:48). However, since the enemies of our salvation-the devil and the flesh – will not given up easily on us, we are bound to face the temptation of yeilding to sin occasionally (1 Peter 5:8-10). We must continue to work at attaining perfection (Phil. 2:12). surrender totally to the dictates of the Holy Spirit and resist the devil (James 4:7). The Apostle Paul charges believers to make no provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14). Let us keep working at bearing all the components of the fruit of the Spirit; it is possible (Phil. 4:13),. We must daily, take steps to nurture our relationship with Jesus so that we can grow to look more like him in His manner, attitude and actions (Heb. 12:2; Phil. 2:5).

CONCLUSION

Though we may struggle and fail, we will surely conquer the flesh and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. We ought to daily strive for, work for, and yearn for the fruit of the Spirit.

QUESTIONS

  1. Is fruit-bearing a matter of choice ? How?
  2. Can we bear all the fruits? How?

ASSIGNMENT

Students should mention five (5) reasons why it is important for believers to bear the fruit of the spirit (2×5=10Marks).

The Fruit Of The Holy Spirit. Part One. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “For the fruit of the spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth”– Eph. 5:9.

Bible Verse: Galatians 5:22-23.

Introduction

One of the reasons Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit is top help us learn how to be more godly (John 16:12-15). The Holy Spirit will convict us of sin (John 16:8). and guide us in choosing well when faced with temptations, thus producing godly characteristics within us (Eph. 3.16; John 16:13). This is what Bible describes as the fruit of the fruit of the Spirit.

OUTLINES

  1. WHY “FRUIT?”
  2. THE OPPOSITE OF BEARING FRUIT.

WHY FRUIT

The Bible uses a lot of agricultural metaphors because they were easily understood by the highly agricultural culture of the time. The “fruit” of the Spirit” refers to the “results” we should see in our lives after receiving the Holy Spirit and working on our hearts over time. (Romans 8:9, 12:1-2). The Apostle Paul give us the componenets of the “fruit” as …love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self control. Galatians 5:21-22.

The “fruit” metaphor helps to see our faith as a tree with branches that may or may not produce fruit, depending on how well we take care of the tree itself. If we give the tree nourishment (Gods word) – 1 Peter 1:23; 2:2 then it will grow bigger. If we clear away weeds and insects (sinful tendencies)- Eph. 4: 22-31; Col. 3:8-10, then we keep the trees healthy. If we consult the “professional Gardener (God)– 1 Chro. 16:11, then we will ensure we are on the right track.

THE OPPOSITE OF BEARING FRUIT

If you are a Christian, and you are not exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit in your life, at best, you will experience stagnation no-growth (James 2:14-26). At worst, the result of “bad fruit” is death (Romans 6:20-23; Proverbs 14:12). Notice that Galatians 5:22 starts with the word “But”. The Apostle Paul tell us the opposite of these spiritual fruit. Let us take a look at some of the verses just before the fruit list. ” Now the work of the flesh are manifest, which are these ” adultery, fornication, uncleanliness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, sedition, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness, rebelling, and such like : of the which I tell you before . as I have told you in the time past, that they which do such things, shall not inherit the kingdom of God”.– Gal. 5:19-21. This is a list of things that someone who does not have the Holy Spirit’s influence would have problem with.

CONCLUSION

On one hand, our sinfulness produces rotted, poisoned fruit, which reflects our sinful nature and hurts in the end. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit produces beautiful , nourishing fruit that reflects God’s nature and will ultimately benefit our lives.

QUESTIONS

  1. Why should a Christian bear the fruit of the Spirit?
  2. What characterize the opposite of the fruit of the Spirit?

Biblical Fast. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: And I set my face unto the Lord God to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth and ashes”-Daniel 9:3.

Bible Passage: Daniel 10:2-3.

Introduction

Fasting, in the bible, is total abstinence from pleasure-giving activities for a set time, to devote oneself to seeking God. While there are many ways believers could fast, too often, the focus is on abstinence from food. In this lesson, we shall examine different types of biblical fast, basic cautions and reasons for fasting.

OUTLINES

  1. TYPES OF FAST IN THE BIBLE.
    2. REASONS AND BASIC CAUTIONS.

TYPES OF FAST IN THE BIBLE

  1. Food fast: This is abstinence from food /drinks. It may take the form of:

a. Regular fast: this is done by abstaining from all foods, both solid and liquid (2 Chro. 20:3). The fast is usually broken daily or periodically (Jer. 36:6).

b. Partial Fast: This is inspired by Prophet Daniel. All meat and animal products are disallowed. The Daniel Fast includes vegetables, legumes, whole grains, seeds, and water. These guidelines are based on Daniel’s request of “nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink” (Daniel 1:8-14).

c. Absolute or Full Fast: Where no food or water is consumed (Esther 4:16; Acts 27:33). For instance, Moses, Elijah, and the Lord Jesus Christ did a forty days absolute fast (Deuteronomy 9:9; 1 Kings 19:7-8; Luke 4:2).

2. Sex fast: The Bible also refers to ‘sexual fast’ (Ex. 19:15). A married couple can mutually agree to abstain from sex for a short period to devote themselves to prayers (1 Cor. 7:5).

3. Pleasure Fast: Another way is to confine or isolate oneself from people and pleasurable things to a place as a means of worship, studying the bible and praying to God for a purpose (Luke 2:36-37;5:16). Time alone with God requires discipline.

NB: Please if you find this App useful, please leave a Review for us. You should also share the App with your friends and brethren as well. Sharing is Caring.

REASONS AND BASIC CAUTIONS

Fasting is far more about focusing on God than abstinence from food and other things that gives pleasure (Zech. 7:5). Also, people fast for various reason. Some for spiritual strenght (Is. 40:30-31), supernatural revelation, wisdom and understanding (Ezra 8:21, Daniel 9:22), supernatural breakthrough (Zech. 8:19), repentance from sinful ways (Joel 2:12-13; Daniel 9:3-5), spiritual hunger and demonstration of love for God’s people and burden for souls (2 Cor. 11:27-28; Matt. 5:6) and sharing with the poor and destruction of wicked works among others (Is. 58:6-7).

Believers should exercise some cautions while fasting. For instance, fasting should be limited to a set time and a clear purpose (1 Cor. 7:5; Esther 4:16). It is neither intended to punish the body nor a dieting method (Is. 58:5) but to redirect attention to God. It is a period to give up self-indulging activities for a deeper fellowship with God (Matt. 4:1-2). Anyone can fast , but some may not be able to fast from food (Diabetes for example). However, everyone can temporarily give up something to draw closer to God (Ex. 19:10). Biblical fast is to be done in a spirit of humility and joyfulness (Matt. 6:16-18). It should not be to manipulate or do evil (Is. 58:4a; Acts 23:21). In breaking ‘absolute and long fast’, warm liquids, (not carbonated drinks) are advised and should be taken in bits.

CONCLUSION: Ask God for wisdom (James 1:5) as regards how and for how long and what purpose he wants you to fast.

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention the types of fast in the Bible.
  2. Mention three reasons believers fasted in the Bible.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five (5) benefits that can be derived from fasting (2×5=10 Marks).

Plugged-In Knees. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought to always pray and not to faint”-Luke 18:1

Bible Passage: Luke 22: 39-46.

Introduction

Plugged-in knees simply refers to a life of constant prayers. A consistent and persistent prayer life was a regular practice and more of a lifestyle by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This exercise was passed upon us more frequently by our Saviour, thus He encouraged His disciples to be fervent , consistent , and persevere in the place of prayer (Luke 18:1). He even propounded the parable of an unjust judge, who was overcome by an unrelenting widow, to do her justice contrary to his inclination.

OUTLINES

  1. THE NEED FOR PERSISTENT PRAYERS
  2. HOW TO PRAY REGULARLY

‘Plugged-in is to engage wholeheartedly in a task or to be connected. The need for ceaseless prayers is therefore emphasized in the Bible (1 Thess. 5:17) for various reasons. Some of these are:

  1. To keep the communication between God and his children open (Ps. 55:17).
  2. To be filled with the power of the Holy Ghost and be bold (Acts 4:31).
  3. To be guided when there is a need to take a decision (Acts 1:24) or find direction (Gen. 24:12).
  4. To stand , though the days are evil (Eph. 5:16) and full of sin , error , subtle heretical seducers and sharp persecution (2 Timothy 3:13-14; Matt. 24:12-13).
  5. For believers in Christ to enjoy the fulness of joy promised them by God all the time (John 16:23-24).
  6. To stay connected to the parent stock, as a branch, and be fruitful (John 15:5-6).
  7. To be able to withstand and confront the forces of darkness that seek to destroy God’s children (Eph. 6:12-13).
  8. To cast out unclean spirits (Matt. 17:19-21).
  9. For restoration (Judges 16:28) and when agonised (1 Sam. 1:10).
  10. To bring the flesh under (Matt. 16:41; 2 Cor. 10:3-5) and always look up unto God (Ps. 5:3).

HOW TO PRAY REGULARLY

We pray frequently when we take prayer as a daily task (Ps. 5:3; Ps. 55:17). Live in the reality , that there is a need to pray without ceasing (Mark 14:38). Put God first on any issue by contacting Him through prayers (Ps. 37:5). Be actively involved in praying always (Col. 1:9). Give yourself to prayers (Ps. 109:4). Delight in God when praying (Job 22:26-27). Pray with confidence that God hears and answers will come (John 5:14-15). Pray everywhere (1 Timo. 2:8).

  1. Be calm. Avoid loosing your temper or flaring up at difficult people (Prov. 14:29).
  2. Understand  the persons’ intentions. Try to identify the person’s trigger. Find out what makes them act difficult. (1 Thess. 5:21).
  3. Do a background check. Find out how others have been relating with the person. (Eccl. 1:13).
  4. Let the person know your intention. Sometimes people are resistant because they think you are being difficult with them (Col. 4:8).
  5. Build a rapport. Try to establish a closer relationship with the person and learn about their families, hobbies, important dates etc. (Prov. 18:24).
  6. Go to a higher authority for resolution. Sometimes , the way to get along with the person may be through the top-down approach (Matt. 18:15-17).
  7. Apply godly wisdom . Sometimes , wisdom demands that you learn how to avoid conflict with a difficult person or know when to walk away.

CONCLUSION: Dealing with difficult people is an exercise in patience, love, and grace.

Honour Men. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Honour Men. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the King”- 1 Peter 2:17.

Bible Passage: Romans 13:7-8.

Introduction

In our previous lesson, we learnt about why and how we should honour God. We also learnt the meaning of honour which is to bestow value upon someone or highly esteem another. The Bible exhorts us to give honour to whom it is due (Romans 13:7). In this lesson, we shall attempt to categorise those who deserve honour and how we can honour as well.

Outlines

  1. Who Deserves honour?
  2. How Can We Attain True Honour

Who Deserves honour?

The idea of honouring people is biblical and can be showcased in many of our basic relationships. Here are some of them:

  1. Citizen-Authority relationships: We are to honour especially those in authority through obedience and demonstration of respect, irrespective of their age or qualification . This comes from the fact that they represent God’s ultimate authority (Romans 13:1-2).
  2. Laity-Clergy relationships: The Bible speaks of the leadership of the church as deserving ‘double honour’ (1 Timothy 5:17).
  3. Employee-Employer relationships: We are equally commanded to honour one another in our employee-employee relationships (Eph. 6:5-9).
  4. Husband-Wife relationships: In a marriage relationship, the husband is expected to love and show appreciation to his wife while she reciprocates with reverence (Eph. 5:33).
  5. Children-Parents relationships: The command to honour our parents comes with a promise (Ex. 20:12). TO do otherwise attracts untimely death (Matt. 15:4).

On the whole, the Bible admonishes us to honour all men (1 Peter 2:17).

How Can We Attain True Honour ?

The Bible teaches that true honour is found in God (Deut. 26:19). Anyone who wishes to attain true honour must, first of all , have a cordial relationship with God (Ps. 91:14-15). Therefore to attain honour, we must all be righteous  (Prov.21:21); humble (Prov. 22:4;Prov. 15:33); wise and intelligent (Prov. 4:7-8); hardworking and diligent (Prov. 22:29); faithful and maintain integrity (Ps.41:12;Prov. 20:7) among others.

CONCLUSION: If we honour those promoted by God, He will honour us too. DO not look down on anyone.

  1. Mention five (5) categories of people who deserve to be honoured ?

Thanksgiving. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms”-Ps. 95:2.

Bible Passage: Psalms 100:1-5.

Introduction
To be thankful literally means to be full of thanks or appreciation. It is an expression of gratitude to someone. Thankfulness in this context is an act of thanksgiving or a show of gratitude to God. Though some people are ungrateful for various reasons, we must not be ingrates because of its attendant dangers.

OUTLINES

1. REASONS AND BENEFITS OF THANKSGIVING
2. DANGERS OF INGRATITUDE

REASONS AND BENEFITS OF THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is a command (1 Chro. 16:8). The request of a believer should start and end with thanksgiving (Phil. 4:6). We thank God for victories over battles of life (John 2:9). It is important to thank God for his mercies and divine provisions (Psalms 58:19; Michah 7:18-20). Thanksgiving is offered to God for his miracles and restoration of hope (1 Sam. 2:1-5; Psalms 126:1-2). The primary reason God created us in His image is for fellowship, thanksgiving, praise and a joyful heart (Is. 43:21).

If you will cultivate the habit of showing gratitude to God, you will compel overflowing blessings from Him. These blessings from Him. These blessings include answered prayers (John 11:41-44); abundant provision (Mark 8:6-8); deliverance from bondage (Acts 16:25-26). Thankful people are peaceful and joyful (Phil. 4;6-7). They enjoy divine presence (Psalms 22:3;95:2), complete restoration, wholeness (Luke 17:16-19) and victory without a fight (2 Chro. 20:21-23).

DANGERS OF INGRATITUDE

ingratitude is the result of vain imagination and a darkened heart. Sometimes your thanksgiving is senseless to the ordinary person but it is more profitable to be thankful than to complain (Romans 1:12; Prov. 15:8). There are several reasons people are ungrateful to God. Sin or spiritual blindness (Eph. 4:17-18). Refusal to take account of what God has done. (Romans 1:21). Pride (Acts 12:21-23).

Every act of ingratitude comes with its attendant danger. Risk of losing the existing blessing, salvation and Heaven (Matt. 25:24-25,30). Limiting one’s blessings or answered prayers (Luke 17;12-16,19). It could result in emptiness and sorrow (Prov. 15:13; 17:22), thereby making restoration practically difficult.

CONCLUSION: Showing gratitude to God ensures continuous divine presence and fellowship.

QUESTIONS

1. Mention some of the reasons for thanksgiving.
2. Why is ingratitude dangerous?

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five (5) things God did for you last year, for which you need to show gratitude (2X5=10 marks).

Bible Passage: Habakkuk 2:1-2.

Introduction

The Bible is full of records of believers who yielded to the leading and guidance of God. While it may seem difficult for some people in our contemporary world to allow God in their pursuit. Christians that meet the requirements will in the path of God.

OUTLINES

1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES OF DIVINE LEADING AND GUIDANCE

2. REQUIREMENTS FOR DIVINE LEADING AND GUIDANCE.

BIBLICAL INSTANCES OF DIVINE LEADING AND GUIDANCE

In Genesis 12:1-4, God ordered Abram out of his country to a promised land and he obeyed. Numbers 9:17-23 narrates how the Israelites obeyed the instruction of God to travel with the cloud. God instructed Jacob to return to his fatherland (Gen.31:3) just as He told Elijah in 1 Kings 18:1 to show himself to Ahab. David inquired from God on whether to go against the Philistines or not. Mattew 2:9-12 tells that God led and guide the wise men to the place of birth of Jesus Christ. In Acts 9:10-11, the Lord gave and guided Ananias to the specific address of Saul of Tarsus. Surprisingly, the Holy Spirit can forbid you to perform a task, though, it may seem like it would please God (Acts 16:6).

REQUIREMENTS FOR DIVINE LEADING AND GUIDANCE

1. Delight in the Lord (Ps. 37:4-8;1 Cor. 2:9).

2. Passion for God’s will (Luke 22:42). The will of God does not leave you miserable or regretful but rather it takes you to the expected end (Jer. 29:11).

3. The willingness to be led ( Romans 8:14; Ps. 23:1-2).

4. The attitude of meekness (Ps. 25:9); meekness equals being teachable.

5. The attitude of enquiry ( Jer. 6:16; Matt. 7:7).

6. The attitude of hearing and listening. – activate the listening mode. (Ps. 85:8; Hab. 2:1-2.

7.. The attitude of patience (Matt. 28:16) . Do not force yourself to hear what God is not saying.

8. Soak in and meditate the word of God. (Ps. 119:105).

9. Pay attention to the Godly leaders over you (1Dam. 3:9)..

10. Obey Previous instructions (Mark 4:24b). If you have not hearken to previous instructions, you.may not hear the next move of God.

Conclusion

If God is the one leading you, you can never miss the mark. Ask for the grace to understand the mind of God and be guided in the right direction. If you think you have gone far in the wrong direction abd refuse to turn back, you will only end in the wrong direction.

Questions

1. Give four 4) biblical examples of people who followed the divine leading and guidance of God.

2. What are the requirements for the leading and guidance of God

Divine Leading And Guidance. RCCG Sunday School Manual

Memory Verse: “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shall go; I will guide thee with mine eye”– Psalms 32:8.

Bible Passage: Psalms 37:3-7.

INTRODUCTION
Divine leading is about being directed by God. Being led or guided by God is a necessary key for Christians. It is the only way to fulfil God’s will in every of our decision-making processes (2 Kings 3:11). Therefore, we need to learn the avenues through which God leads and guides His people. Moreover, in this dispensation, the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit are both inevitable and indispensable.

AVENUES FOR DIVINE LEADING AND GUIDANCE

It is important to note that God, in his Sovereignty, can adopt any or several means to lead and guide those who put their trust in Him. Here are some of them:

1. Through the word of God (1 Sam. 3:21; Heb. 1:1-2).
2. Through a witness of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:14-16). The witness of the Spirit can also come in form of God’s peace that passes all understanding (Phil.4:5-7).
3. Through the voice of the Spirit. This is beyond just a witness. It is a hearing. This hearing can be inward(which means no one else around you hears it). The Bible calls it a “still small voice”, like the sound of a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12). Sometimes, the voice comes in the midst of goldly thought (Acts 10:19). The voice of the Spirit can also be outward, in which case you look around as if you heard or somebody else heard what you are hearing (1 Sam.3:3-5; Acts 9:3-5).
4. Through revelations: dreams, visions, trances (Joel 2:28). Dreams can come from your thought (Eccl. 5:3), or the devil -scary and tormenting (nightmares) or from God- insightful, instructional, or revelational (Job 33: 14-17). Dreams happen when you are fully asleep (day or night). Vision can come when you are awake and see something like a still or motion picture (day or night)- Dan. 2:19. Trance is the average between a dream and a vision (you are half awake, half asleep) when the physical senses seem to be suspended (Acts 10:10-11)

5. Through ordained situation and circumstance (Prov. 24:30-34; Jer. 18:1-8). God can take you through a happening to give you a clear direction for life.

6. Through prophetic utterances and confirmations (Hosea 12:10). However, believers are cautioned against living at the mercy of prophesy (1 John 4:1).

7. Through diverse means as deemed by God. (Hosea 12:10).

RECOGNISING DIVINE LEADING AND GUIDANCE

The holy spirit take on the role of a Guide and a Counsellor leading us in the way we should go and revealing God’s truth (Luke 12:12). One of the most important ways to recognise the holy spirit’s guidance is to be familiar with God’s word. The bible is the ultimate source of wisdom about how we should live (2 Tim. 3:16) and believers are to search the Scriptures (John 5:39), meditate on them, and commit them to memory (Ps. 1:2).The word is the sword of the spirit (Eph. 6:17). and the spirit will use it to speak to us John 16:12-14 to reveal God’s will for our lives . He will also bring specific scriptures to mind at times when we need them most (John 14:26).

Therefore, we must test out inclinations against the scriptures. This is because the holy spirit will never push us to do anything contrary to God’s word (1 Cor. 14:33). I’d it conflicts with the bible , then it is not from the holy spirit and should be ignored. It is also  neccesary for us to be in continual prayer with the father (1 Thess. 5:17) Not only does this keep our hearts and.minds open to holy spirit leading , but it also allows the Spirit to speak on our behalf (Romans 8:26-27).

CONCLUSION
If you are not led and guided by God, you will wander and get lost in the wilderness of life . Let God lead you.

The Mystery Of Faith. RCCG Sunday School Manual

Memory Verse: “Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience”. – 1 Timothy 3:9.

Bible Passage: Hebrews 11:3-11.

Introduction

The ultimate goal of the Christian life is to please God. Pleasing God is accomplished by faith (Heb. 11:6). Faith is the foundation of the Christian life and the principle that brings us to Jesus Christ. An understanding of what faith is will help us grow in our walk with the Lord.

OUTLINES

1. A Description of Faith.
2. Stages of Faith.

A Description Of Faith

Faith is the currency of believers (Mark 9:23): when God created the heavens and the earth in Genesis 1:1 , as well as everything we see ( the stars, moon and light), we understand by faith (Heb. 11:3). Faith works where we cannot see (Heb. 11:1). It is the substance of things hoped for. Faith is predicting your future. (Ps. 27:13). It is shaping your future by speaking and confessing it (Mark 11:24). Faith is the act of declaring and decreeing (Mark 11:23; Job 22:28); it is the vehicle that moves God (Matt. 8:9-10: 15:25-28). Faith is the pillar for salvation (Eph. 2:8; Romans 10:9-10); pursuing a Christ-like life is a demonstration of faith (Heb. 10: 38-39).

Stages of Faith

1. The faith that secures our salvation and makes us the followers of Jesus. This is fundamental theology and the fore of what we believe as Christians (Romans 10:4; John 14:6; Eph. 1:13). It is what makes us believers (John 1:12). It is what separates Christianity from other religions (1 John 4:1-3).

2. faith is an act, art and science of believing. It is the practical aspect of our profession as Christians that make is hold on to the word or promises of God against all odds (Romans 4:18-21)

3. The lifestyle of faith. This is when faith has become a lifestyle, we live it. At this stage, it is impossible not to believe in God. We do not stagger at what we see or experience. (Daniel 3:16-18; Acts 21:11-13).

CONCLUSION

Faith is both a gift and fruit of the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor. 12:9; Gal. 5:22). It is the fuel that keeps us going as believers.

The Mystery Of Iniquity. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: “For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he is taken out of the way“-2 Thess. 2:7.

Bible Passage: 2 Thess. 2:1-12.

Introduction

Mystery simply means something that baffles understanding and cannot be explained. It takes its root from the Latin word “mysterium” and the ancient Greek word “mysterion” meaning a secret or secret rite. Iniquity from its root ‘anomia” (in Greek) means illegality i.e violation of law or wickedness, transgression of the law, unrighteousness or lawlessness. Therefore, the mystery of iniquity is a system of lawlessness for which believers are warned and expected to be on guard.

OUTLINES

THE MYSTERY OF INIQUITY EXPLAINED

the mystery of iniquity is the working of lawlessness in the world, leading to a worldwide rebellion against God (Matt. 24:12; 2 Timothy 3:1-4). It is all about controlling people, systems, finance etc. (Genesis 11:4). It is an interwoven series of complex systems that have slipped into politics, entertainment, sports, education, religion, media etc. (Romans 1:21-22). It is also revealed through the spirit of seduction, and doctrines of the devils (2 Timothy 3:13; 1 Timothy 4;1). It showcases sinful behaviours and diabolic practices in human beings (Acts 8:22-23; Matt. 23:28).

Iniquity relates more to the inner character (Mark 7:21-23) and points to an intentional desire to twist God’s holy standard (Jude 4). It drives human beings to twist God’s word (Titus 1:11). It will one day culminate in the appearance of the Antichrist, whose spirit is already at work in the world but is being restrained for now so that the world is not as evil as it could be (2 Thess. 2:7-8; 1 John 4:3).

BELIEVERS MUST BE ON THE WATCH
With the spirit of lawlessness everywhere in the world, believers must:
1. Search, read and guard their heart diligently and always (Joel 2;13; Prov. 4:23).
2. Confess any known sin. (1 John 1:9) and repent receiving forgiveness from the Lord (Acts 3;19).
3. Do Not conform to this world’s system (Romans 12:2) and be diligent to keep God’s commandment (Deut. 11:22).
4. Watch and pray (Matt. 26:41) and ask for a new heart (Psalms 51:10).
5. Put on the new man (Col. 3;10) and be constantly renewed by the Holy Ghost (Titus 3:5).
6. Depart from iniquity (2 Timothy 2;19) and remove the old yeast of sin (1 Cor. 5:17).

7. Purge themselves (2 Tim. 2:21) and let their garments be spotless (Eccl. 9:8).

CONCLUSION: Believers must know that the spirit of lawlessness is already operating in tyher world presently and they must ensure that they keep the profession of their faith to the end.
