Depression: a man with his hand on his head

Depression. RCCG Sunday School Teachers.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Depression is a word from the Latin verb “deprimere,” meaning to press down. It is an emotional response triggered by circumstances beyond one’s mental stability.

It is a mental health illness or mood disorder where one experiences unusual persistent sadness. As the saying goes, there is no health without mental health. This shows that other aspects of health such as physical, financial, spiritual, and social can also take a downward spiral due to a depressive illness. Hence, it is important to educate ourselves on the causes, symptoms, and the way out of depression.

LESSON AIM: To study instances, causes, and prevention of depression.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Discover some instances and causes of depression in the Bible.
b. Understand how to prevent depression.
To attain the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow the students to take the opening prayer, read the Bible passage, recite the memory verse, and do the class activities and the assignment.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to review the previous week’s lesson, introduce the lesson, conduct the class, and mark the attendance and the assignment.
c. The teacher should explain the two lesson outline, administer the class activities, summarize, evaluate the lesson and give the assignment.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Kings 19:1-4.

From the passage above, the teacher should identify four (4) reasons why Elijah was depressed.
i. ………………………………
ii. ………………………………
iii. …………………………….
iv. ……………………………

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES AND CAUSES
  2. PREVENTION OF DEPRESSION

1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES AND CAUSES

A. BIBLICAL INSTANCES
Depression is often viewed as a persistent feeling of sadness (Romans 8:20-22). There are many biblical examples of men of God who struggled with sadness, even to the point of depression. David, a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), did not gloss over his sadness; he expressed it to God (Psalm 56:8). Both Moses (Numbers 11:15) and Elijah (1 Kings 19:3-5), two heroes of the faith, confessed to God that they preferred to die than live in their current reality.

B. CAUSES
Depression can be triggered by negative events such as
i. The loss of a loved one.
ii. Loss of a job.
iii. Loss of a relationship.
iv. Loss of a pet.
v. Economic crises.
vi. Financial instability.
vii. Unpleasant circumstances, etc. (1 Samuel 1:6-7; Nehemiah 2:2).

Biologically, depression manifests when some chemical changes occur in the human brain due to persistent uncontrollable sad feelings. This causes changes in the levels of some hormones in the brain which include cortisol, adrenaline, and dopamine. These changes affect multiple organs in the body including the brain leading to a gross reduction in human productivity and health.

C. SYMPTOMS
Consequently, symptoms of depression include a depressed mood or feeling of sadness, constant tiredness, reduced or lost interest in previously enjoyable activities, forgetfulness, hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts, and being overly suspicious of people or events. Excessive complaints of body pains, loss of appetite, loss of interest in sex, loss of sleep, and poor attention can also signal a depressive illness.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Can a true Christian suffer depression?

2. PREVENTION OF DEPRESSION

Question 1: What are some inadequate coping mechanisms some people use for this mood disorder?
Answers:
i. Abuse of alcohol.
ii. Smoking.
iii. Absenteeism.
iv. Spouse battery
v. Over spirituality.
vi. Over-socialization. Etc.

Question 2: Can this coping mechanism cure depression?
Answer: These maladaptive coping mechanisms give short-term relief but only worsen the symptoms and eventually lead to a severe mental illness.

Question 3: In addition to seeking medical or professional interventions. What can believers do to prevent depression?
Answers:

  1. Be filled with joy (Romans 15:13). Joy is something the Holy Spirit produces in the life of a follower of Jesus Christ (Galatians 5:22; 1 Thessalonians 1:6).
  2. Christians should know that God will never leave His own (Deuteronomy 31:8).
  3. He will strengthen and uphold His children regardless of the situation (Isaiah 41:10).
  4. God hears our cry (Psalm 40:1-3).
  5. God is near to the broken-hearted (Psalm 34:18-19; Matthew 11:28-30).
  6. Develop positive attitudes.
  7. Understand our mental limits.
  8. Build problem-solving skills, resilience skills, and good communication skills.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Can a Christian seek medical assistance to depression? Discuss.

CONCLUSION: Depression contributes to poor personal, family, community, and economic growth. It can be difficult to recognise but once any of the symptoms are noticed, it is important to seek care immediately.

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention five causes of depression.
  2. Identify four things believers must do to prevent depression.

EVALUATION: What are some causes and preventions to depression?

CLOSING PRAYER: O God, please fill our hearts with joy in the name of Jesus.

ASSIGNMENT: Write five misconceptions people have about depression (2×5= 10 marks).

MEMORY VERSE: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” – Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 17:33-37 (KJV)

35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Memories are events or experiences that happened in the past. God designed us each with memory – the capacity and capability of the human brain to store and retrieve past events. The human memory is utilised continuously moment-by-moment to record what is going on in our lives even things done secretly. This lesson shall highlight some facts about human memory and how believers should manage their memories.

LESSON AIM: The teacher should allow the students to review the previous week’s lesson with particular attention to the outline.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Discover some facts about human memory.
b. Understand some tips on how to manage human memory.

TEACHING PLAN: through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Discover some facts about human memory.
b. Understand some tips on how to manage human memory.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Samuel 17:33-34.

The teacher should identify five (5) roles which “recall” played in the planned encounter with Goliath as indicated in the Bible passage.

i. ………………………………..
ii. …………………………………
iii. ……………………………….
iv. ……………………………….
v. …………………………………

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. FACTS ABOUT HUMAN MEMORY
  2. MANAGING OUR MEMORIES

1. FACTS ABOUT HUMAN MEMORY

The human memory is involved in virtually almost what we do as humans:

  1. It records what is ongoing in our lives, even mental images in our sleep (Genesis 41:1-8). Without it, we have no identity and purpose, and life will be meaningless.
  2. It provides us with a source of the direction of what to do and how to do it through experience (1 Samuel 17: 33-37).
  3. The capacity of the human brain (memory) is believed to be approximately 2.5 million gigabytes or 2,500 terabytes (2.5 petabytes). This storage device can store up to 300 years of continually recorded non-stop television video.
  4. Unlike a hard disk drive, you cannot delete memory from your brain. If you stop thinking about certain memories and focus on others, they will slowly recede into the background.
Some memories may not recede but are inaccessible, they are not entirely gone and could potentially be retrieved (Daniel 4:33-34, 36).
  5. Memories are spiritual and part of our soul for instance; the martyrs could still recall how they were treated on earth (Revelation 6:9-10).
  6. The entire body will decay in death but the memory and soul will remain.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should recall any mighty act of God in their lives.

2. MANAGING OUR MEMORIES

Our memories can be pleasant or unpleasant which may be triggered by something we have seen or heard; or will just appear in our mind without a ‘trigger.’ However, as believers:

  1. We should know what to dwell on and what to let go of (Philippians 4:8).
  2. We should treasure things that are inspiring in our hearts. Be it prophecies, revelation from the scriptures, and so on. One of the ways of doing this is by taking notes (Luke 2:19).
  3. We should recall what the Lord has done; how he drew us unto repentance and salvation, His faithfulness, kindness, and so on (Ephesians 2:11-13). This, in turn, provokes worship that glorifies God and brings strength, courage, hope, and faith when we struggle with afflictions and oppositions (Psalm 8:1-4; 1 Samuel 17:36-37).
  4. We should recall others in our prayers, be they unsaved family members, co-workers, or friends in tough situations (2 Timothy 1:3-5; Hebrews 13:3).
  5. The painful memories we recall should be handed over to our Saviour who can pour out love and comfort, to restore our broken hearts (Psalm 116:3-5; Hebrews 4:15).
  6. Everyone will one day be just “a memory.” We should live in such a way that we would leave the stage with a good memory of ourselves to encourage and inspire others after our death (Proverbs 10:7; Psalm 112:6).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss the effective ways to handle our memory to ensure that it works to glorify God only.

CONCLUSION: Humans have the power to store a vast amount of experiences throughout their lives, but as believers, we should know which to recall or to let go, to the glory of God.

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention four facts about human memory.
  2. Identify four ways of managing our memories

Love Language In Marriage. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

RCCG Sunday School Teacher Manual 21 April 2024 Lesson 34: Love Language In Marriage

OPENING PRAYER: Almighty Father, please teach all spouses how to demonstrate true love in their marriages in Jesus’ name. (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 21 April 2024 HYMN)

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.” – Proverbs 25:15 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 2:18-25. (KJV)

18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Many marriages are needlessly failing because the marriage partners have a lack of knowledge regarding relationship dynamics (Hosea 4:6). Most couples, sadly to say, are ignorant on purpose. In this study, we will look at the scriptural principles and the love language that should characterise our marital relationships.

LESSON AIM: To study some marriage principles and love language.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through the lesson, students should be able to:

a. Discover some scriptural principles guiding marriage.
b. Understand the true meaning of love language.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives:

a. The Assistant Teacher should conduct the class and mark the assignment.
b. The students should recite the memory verse; participate in discussion and do the assignment.
c. The Teacher should explain the lesson outline, summarize, conclude and evaluate the lesson, and take the closing prayer.

TEXT REVIEW: Genesis 2:18-25.

Identify any five events or acts that relate the passage to love and marriage.
i. ……………………………………………………
ii. ……………………………………………………
iii. ……………………………………..……………
iv. ……………………………………………………
v. ……………………………………………..………

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES GUIDING MARRIAGE
  2. UNDERSTANDING THE ‘‘LOVE LANGUAGE’’

1. SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES GUIDING MARRIAGE

The teacher should explain the following eight scriptural principles guiding marriage to students:

i. The image of God is best expressed in the combination of male and female (Genesis 1:27).
ii. The God-designed difference between male and female is to be accepted as complementary, not competitive (Genesis 2:18).
iii. Marriage is a divine, not human institution (Genesis 2:21-23).
iv. It is to be a relationship of companionship, completion, and communion (Genesis 2:25; Matthew 19:5).
v. Marriage was designed by God to be a permanent, mutual, covenant relationship (Matthew 19:6).
vi. God’s intent is for marriage to be an inestimable source of joy and fulfilment (Proverbs 18:22).
vii. Marriage is a major part of God’s plan to bring redemption to the human race (Genesis 22:18).
viii. The seed of the marriage relationship provided the vehicle for the incarnation of the Saviour, Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:15; Ephesians 5:31-32).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss the human principles that have been introduced into marriage today but which were not at the beginning.

2. UNDERSTANDING THE “LOVE LANGUAGE”

Many problems in marriage, usually, occur due to the inability of the partners to understand each other’s love language. Love language is an expression that makes you or your partner feel loved.

There are five (5) primary love languages. They are:

i. Quality Time: Spending time with each other and talking without interruptions, going out and about, having fun together, celebrating birthdays, and wedding anniversaries, etc. let the courtship experience continue. (Genesis 26:8).
ii. Acts of Service: Do things you know your spouse will like you to do. For example; cooking meals, helping each other, especially in household chores, etc. (Ecclesiastes 4:9).
iii. Exchange of Gifts: Express your love for each other through giving/receiving gifts no matter how small. (1 Samuel 1:5; Proverbs 17:8).
iv. Words of Affirmation: Couples must be consistent in saying ‘I love you’, ‘I am sorry’, ‘Thank you’, ’You look nice in that dress’ etc. to each other. (Song of Solomon 1:15; 4:1, 7).
v. Physical Touching: This is a way of communicating emotional love, e.g. holding hands, kissing, pecking, embracing, patting, sitting close to each other, etc. (Genesis 26:8; Song of Solomon 1:2).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Which of the points above are commonly absent as marriages get older? How can a spouse recover it/them?

CONCLUSION: Couples should discover and express to each other what ‘their’ primary love language is and not just say them but do them!

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention at least three scriptural principles of marriage.
  2. Identify the primary love languages needed in marriage.

EVALUATION: What are scriptural principles guiding marriages and love language?

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, make Christian marriages role models in Jesus’ name.

ASSIGNMENT: State five things you will start/continue to do for your spouse to keep him/her perpetually happy (2×5=10 marks).

Broken Homes. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

RCCG Sunday School Teacher Manual 14 April 2024 TOPIC: Broken Homes

OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, please heal all broken homes in the name of Jesus. (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 14 April 2024 HYMN)

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” – Mark 3:25 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 25:24-34 (KJV)

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the first came out red, all over like a hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after that came to his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel, and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bares them.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

The plan of God for homes is for them to remain united in body and spirit (Psalms 133:1). A broken home is a family in which the parents are separated or divorced. So many children and estranged partners have suffered the consequences of a broken home. This has caused society and the church a lot of unrest. It is, therefore, necessary to examine the causes of broken homes and their remedy.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through the lesson, students should be able to:

a. Understand the causes of broken homes.
b. Discover the effects and remedies for broken homes.

Marriage Status. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER: Father, let every husband love his wife and let every wife reverence her husband in the name of Jesus.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” – Ephesians 5:33 (KJV).

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 5:22-29 (KJV)

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Marriage is a state of being united as man and woman in a consensual and contractual relationship recognised by law. According to the Bible, marriage is a honourable institution (Hebrews 13:4) and a lifetime commitment (Matthew 19:6). However, it is generally observed that some marriages are in a state of coma or completely dead, while some merely exist. What is the status of your marriage as a believer? It is interesting to know that God desires that we all have living marriages.

LESSON AIM: To study the status of some marriages and the characteristics of a living marriage.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through the lesson, students should be able to:

a. Understand the state of some marriages.
b. Discover the characteristics of a living marriage.

TEXT REVIEW: Ephesians 5:22-29.

The teacher should identify five desirable natures of a godly husband according to Ephesians 5:22-29.
i. …………………………………………………
ii. ………………………………………………..
iii. ……………………………………………….
iv. ……………………………………………….
v. …………………………………………………

LESSON OUTLINES:

MARRIAGE STATUS
CHARACTERISTICS OF A LIVING MARRIAGE
1. MARRIAGE STATUS

The teacher should highlight the characteristics of the following marriage status as indicated below:
I. ‘Marriage In Coma’: This is a marriage in which neither of the spouses feels the presence of the other nor spends quality time together.
This marriage has the following characteristics:
i. Bitterness and resentment (Hebrews 12:15).
ii. The couple refuses to keep communication lines open.
iii. They dwell more on each other’s weaknesses or offenses (1 Samuel 25:25-26).
iv. There is selfishness
v. Partners may be inconsiderate (Philippians 2:3).
II. Dead Marriage: In this kind of marriage, there are no traces of true love
i. Even if they are living under the same roof, there may not be emotional attachment/attraction or genuine concern for each other’s wellbeing.
ii. They are more like familiar strangers or two people just cohabiting (1 Corinthians 3:3).
III. Living Marriage: This is a kind of marriage in which the couple dwells together in understanding
i. There is genuine love.
ii. There is sacrifice and patience.
iii. Couple enjoys the company of each other (Genesis 26:8).
iv. Over time they have learned to manage their weaknesses or excesses.

2. CHARACTERISTICS OF A LIVING MARRIAGE

A living marriage is a function of mutual fulfilment derived from a selfless commitment to the marital union. This can only be achieved by the grace of God, determination, and deliberate efforts of both partners. Below are some characteristics of a living marriage:
i. The fear of God: The couple subjects their decisions to the standard of God’s word and operates their home based on the fear and love of God. (Genesis 18:19; Isaiah 8:13).

ii. Love: The love between such a couple transcends “eros’’ (sexual intimacy) or phileo (friendship). It is God’s kind of Love that is unconditional and sacrificial (1 Corinthians 13:4-8, Ephesians 5:24-25). A couple in a living marriage is prepared to ‘weather the storm’ throughout their lifetime.
iii. Mutual support: This couple makes the decision to stay and support each other through thick and thin (Galatians 6:2).

iv. Forgiveness: Conflicts are inevitable and sometimes healthy because it promotes a better understanding. The couple is quick to ask for forgiveness as well as to grant it (Ephesians 4:32).
v. Kindness: they maintain a great habit of being kind and understanding of each other (Romans 12:10).
vi. Commitment: they show a keen interest in the progress of each other’s career, ministry, business, extended families, etc. They share each other’s views and visions (Philippians 2:4).
vii. Appreciation: They develop the attitude of gratitude and celebrate each other (Philippians 2:3).
viii. Acceptance: They do not dwell on the weakness of each other but prayerfully work on each other and trust God for positive changes (Ephesians 4:2).
ix. Time: They spend quality time together in understanding and knowing each other (Genesis 26:8, Ecclesiastes 9:9).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss the enemies of a living marriage.

CONCLUSION: In a living marriage, the human ego is reduced to the barest minimum to enjoy marital bliss.

QUESTIONS:

Describe at least three states of some marriages.
Mention four characteristics of a living marriage.
EVALUATION: Mention what you have learned under the three states of marriages i.e. “Coma’’, “Dead’’ and “Living’’ marriage.

CLOSING PRAYER: O God, please revive any marriage in “coma” or a ‘dead’ marriage in Jesus’ name.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention any five (5) factors that can make a “living marriage” status difficult to attain. (2X5=10 Marks).

Christianity and Governance. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER’S MANUAL 17 MARCH 2024

RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER’S MANUAL 17 MARCH 2024

LESSON TWENTY NINE (29)
TOPIC: CHRISTIANITY AND GOVERNANCE

*SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN*
1. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth.

2. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Thy friend friendship suits me well,
Both young and will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School.

3. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee.

4. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee

5. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds be black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School.

6. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?

OPENING PRAYER: O Lord, we pray for believers in all nations to arise and turn a new attitude to governance in the name of Jesus.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 13:1-6
[1]Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
[2]Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
[3]For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
[4]For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
[5]Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
[6]For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

MEMORY VERSE: And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. Revelation 5:10.

INTRODUCTION: The opinion held by some Christians that if they are going to follow Christ, they must be quiet and withdrawn from things happening on the earth, negates the will of God as spelled out in the Scripture. Christ has called believers unto a life of influence, control, and dominion (Psalms 8:6). They are to take charge (Matthew 5:15-16) and the issue of governance is no exception. As the light of the world, they are to dispel the darkness of unrighteousness, sycophancy, etc. which are the order of the day, in present-day governance systems of the world.

TEXT REVIEW: Romans 13:1-6.
Some directives are given to the governed in the above passage. Identify any five of them.
i ……………………………
ii. …….……………………
iii. …..……………………
iv. ……..…………………
v. …………….……………

LESSON AIM: To study the view of God on governance and why Christians should be involved.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Discover God’s position on human government.
b. Discover the benefits of believers getting involved in governance.

TEACHING PLAN: To attain the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow students to review the previous week’s lesson. They should also be allowed to contribute to the discussion as highlighted in the lesson; they should submit their assignments to the Assistant Teacher for assessment.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to conduct the class and guide the discussions. The Assistant Teacher should also mark the attendance and the assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outline, guide the discussions, summarize, conclude, evaluate the lesson, and give an assignment.

OUTLINES:
1.THE VIEW OF GOD ON GOVERNANCE
The students should be made to know that:
i. God instituted governance. It is not a secular concept or people’s creation.
ii. God is the ultimate “Governor” who delegates the function to humans (Psalm 22:28; Daniel 4:34).
iii. It is one of the purposes for which the spirit-being called ‘man’ was created (Genesis 1:26).
iv. It is a calling and manifestation of the gift of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:28).
v. It is a tool for orderliness and sanity (1 Corinthians 14:40; Exodus 18:21).
vi. It is instituted by God for administration, justice, and general welfare of citizens (1Timothy 2:2).
vii. Like marriage, it is instituted by God and should be submitted to (Mark 12:17; Romans 13:1-2).
viii. Governance is servanthood. It is a means of serving the governed (Matthew 20:25-28).
ix. Governance is a ministry and governors are ministers of God (Romans 13:3-4).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: What do you think government can do to deliver more services to the citizens?

2. CHRISTIANS SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN GOVERNANCE
Christians need to be involved in governance because:
1. It is part of our inherent design as believers (Genesis 1:26; Matthew 5:15-16).
2. We are to effect positive and lasting change (Genesis 41:46-49; 53-57).
3. It stands out the nation among other nations (Proverbs 14:34).
4. We shall make righteous laws and decrees that lead to national progress (Mark 6:27; Luke 2:1).
5. It is obeying God’s ordinance of submission to authority (Hebrews 13:17, 1 Peter 2:13-14).
6. It brings blessings and breakthroughs to the nation and fulfilment for her citizenry (Proverbs 11:10).
7. Governance is God’s institution and the word of God. So, people of God should not be kept out of God’s institution (Romans 13:1-6).
8. We must avoid paying the costly price of bad leadership (2 Samuel 23:3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Mention the dangers of not participating in politics.

CONCLUSION: Believers should take their rightful place in deciding the destiny of their nations and turn the kingdom of this world into the kingdom of our God which is God’s divine mandate for us.

QUESTIONS:
* What is God’s view on governance?
* Mention five (5) reasons Christians should be involved in governance.

EVALUATION:
i. What are the views of God on governance?
ii. Why should Christians be involved?

CLOSING PRAYER: God, please guide our leaders right and help the citizens to obey and respect the laws of the land.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention any five (5) issues that discourage some believers from getting involved in governance. (2X5=10 Marks).

Relationship and Readiness. It Matters Who You Know

Key Verse: Matthew 7:22-23
Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy In your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?” Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” (NIV)

>>Focus
Sometimes it feels like if you’re going to get anywhere in life, you’ve got to know the right people-have the right connections, be an insider. Of course, as a Christian, you know that God is ultimately in control. In fact, the Bible cautions against worrying about what others think or what they can do to you. And yet, in the end, it really does come down to who you know -especially where God is concerned. Your people connections are not necessarily the issue. Your “God connection” is what really matters.

Regardless of what you do in life, great or small, it will amount to nothing if you don’t know Christ. It is not enough just to know Him, or know how to work for Him. A loving, sincere, personal relationship with Him, is the only thing that will give you access to eternity in heaven. Jesus warned that some will stand before Him and make great claims regarding their earthly and spiritual accomplishments. But many will be banished from God’s kingdom because their acts weren’t founded on a relationship with Jesus.

Examine your own life. Do you put in more effort and energy on serving Him than you do knowing Him? God wants the relationship to come first, so that everything you do flows out of love and gratitude for what Christ did for you. As you present this week’s study and proceed through this entire unit, be sure the emphasis is not simply on Jesus’ expectations, but on His invitation-to know Him.

>>The Basic Message: Explain to students…
• WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA? In the end, knowing Jesus is what really matters.
• WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Actions and appearances can be misleading; only a personal relationship with Christ will prepare you for the final judgment.
• HOW DO I LIVE IT?
Above all, make time to strengthen your relationship with Jesus and sharpen your response to God’s direction.

>>Study Overview: Explain that today’s study considers…
• How some things that influence and impress people don’t matter to God.
• How a sincere personal relationship with Jesus is what matters in the end.
• How we demonstrate our love for Jesus by strengthening our relationship with Him and by following God’s commands and directions for our lives.

>>Inform and Discuss

a). Great Acts and Grand Appearance
1. Read or ask a volunteer to read Matt 7:13-14.Does God intend it to be difficult to find eternal life? Why is it easy to miss the way to heaven?[Hint: God wants people to respond to His free offer of eternal life, but there are lots of distractions in this life. Some of these things are even more deceptive because they come from sources that appear to be righteous or reliable.]

2. Read or ask a volunteer to read Matt 7:21-23. Why would people act like they are living for God when they really aren’t? [Hint: They may be trying to impress others or get people to follow them. They may enjoy the appearances of being righteous, or even think they are fooling God.]
>>Note: As crucial as it is to guard against deception in the last days, the most important evaluation we can make is not about others’ actions, but about our own relationship with God.

3. Do you think people can sincerely believe they are pleasing God when they really aren’t? How could this happen? [Hint: Even people who start out trusting God can get careless or prideful. Some may regard apparent success in life or ministry as a sign of God’s approval.]

4. How could a person be involved in seemingly powerful spiritual things without actually knowing Christ? [Hint: One of the easiest ways for Satan to deceive people is to masquerade his work under a guise of righteousness. But there are also reasons why God sometimes allows powerful ministry to take place through unlikely – even unworthy-Individuals.]

>>Teacher Hint: Here are a few quick lessons we must learn: “don’t equate apparent success with God’s blessing or approval. | *Don’t base your faith solely on spectacular or supernatural experiences. |*Don’t try to fool others or worry what they think. | *Don’t be more attracted to object or personalities than to God. | *Always measure the soundness of teaching and experiences by what God’s Word says.

b). No Substitute for Knowing Jesus
1. Read or ask a volunteer to read Matt 7:23. How could a person be deeply involved in church and ministry and still not know Jesus?[Hint: People who are around ministry and other Christians can become complacent in their spiritual lives, fooling themselves and others. Some think that if they simply believe and do the “right” things, they will be okay spiritually.]

2. Why would Jesus call them evil doers? [Hint: People’s motive can be prideful, deceptive, and selfish. Those who pretend to serve God in this way do spiritual harm by giving people the wrong impression of godliness and leading them toward destruction.]

3. Discuss some of the ways we can truly get to know Jesus.[Guide: Remind students that while prayer and Bible study are key. God doesn’t want the relationship to become a routine chore. He wants us to enjoy it- like having time with a best friend. Ask them to list some practical, creative ways to develop and enhance their relationship with God.]
>>Note: A part of getting to know God comes through exploring and experiencing what He wants us to do with our lives every day.

c). Loving Means Living
1.Read or ask a volunteer to read John 12:42-50. According to this passage, why will some people be condemned when they stand before God?[Hint: They rejected Jesus and didn’t accept or live by His words.]

2. Read or ask volunteers to read Matt 7:21.In general, what is God’s will? What do you think He wants from us above all else? [Hint: He wants us to receive and develop a personal relationship with Him-to love Him as He loves us.]

3. Read or ask volunteers to read John 14:15, 21-24.Can a person truly love Jesus without doing what God asks? How do we truly demonstrate that we know and love Jesus? [Hint: We cannot claim to truly love Jesus if we ignore what He wants us to do. We must take time to develop our relationship with Him and live as He desires-following His teaching. Obeying His Word, and following His plans for our lives.]

>>Guide: Explain that Jesus doesn’t love us because of what we do; for we cannot earn His love through good works or fulfilling duties. However, those who truly love Jesus will desire to do good in response to His love. Jesus promised to reveal Himself to those who love and obey Him.

>>Involve Them: Play the song” I Will Follow You” by Kristine DiMarco from the album Mighty (Live). You can access it via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08Sx_UOZtrB. Discuss how a passion to know God includes following Jesus in obedience, no matter what happens.

>>Inspire Them: Remind students THE BASIC MESSAGE of this study(pg 52),even as you explain WHAT the Big Idea behind the study is; WHY it matters; and HOW we can live the lesson captured in this study.

>>Ministry Activity: Ask students to think for a moment about how they would answer God if He were to ask them this question: “Why should you be admitted into heaven? “After a few moments, remind them that God doesn’t make it difficult for people to receive eternal life. It’s not based on anything great or spiritual we do. We can’t know enough or be good enough. An active, sincere, personal relationship with God is the only ticket to heaven.

>>Invitation Option: Provide opportunity for students who want to receive or renew a personal relationship with God to do so. Invite them to pray with you, asking God to forgive their sins and take leadership of their lives.

Conclude the study by reminding students that Christian life isn’t about religious rules; it’s about a loving, personal relationship with Jesus.

>>Teacher Hint: Ask Yourself…
1. Do the students understand that extraordinary spiritual experiences may impress people, but they don’t necessarily mean someone has a relationship with God?

2. Do they realize that church involvement or “success” in life or ministry won’t guarantee God’s approval?

3. Do they understand that although a relationship with Christ isn’t about what we can do, love for Jesus should still inspire us to obey Him and follow His plans?

Christian and Socialization. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER: O God, help me to please you in all I do in the name of Jesus. Amen.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.” – Philippians 4:5 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 6:12-13 (KJV)

12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: To socialise simply means to talk to and do things with other people in a friendly way. There are various ways of socialising, ranging from relating with people in the immediate environment, to getting involved in governance and community development activities. Christian socialisation cuts across recreation, social interaction, cultural activities, and political issues. While there may be diverse opinions on the extent of the involvement of Christians in social issues, it should be noted that moderation should be the watchword.

LESSON AIM: To study various ways of socialising as a Christian.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through the lesson, students should be able to:

a. Discover some biblical instances of socialisation.
b. Understand both the biblical and worldly perspectives of socialisation.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Corinthians 6:12-13.
In this passage, Apostle Paul declares;
i. All things are lawful unto me…………..V12.
ii. Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats ………………………V13.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES OF SOCIALISATION
  2. WORLDLY PERSPECTIVES VERSUS BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

1. BIBLICAL INSTANCES OF SOCIALISATION

The Bible contains instances of different forms of socialisation. We shall x-ray a few of them.
a. The Lord Jesus socialized in the following instances:
i. Jesus Christ and His disciples attended a wedding ceremony at Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-2).
ii. He dined with Zacchaeus in his house (Luke 19:5).
iii. He was a friend to the family of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha (Luke 10:38-42) and also paid them a condolence visit (John 11:33-35).
iv. He and His disciples also participated in the Feast of Passover (Mark 14:12-14)

b. Apostle Paul interacted with diverse classes of people for the sake of the Gospel to win some (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

c. Daniel was involved in political administration in his days (Daniel 1:18-21; 6:1-3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should explore some other examples of social events in which God’s people participated in the Bible.

2. WORLDLY PERSPECTIVES VERSUS BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

The teacher should state that Christians cannot live in isolation in this present world. However, we must know when and how to draw the line between worldly (sinful) and acceptable (holy) socialisations. For instance:
i. Christians are expected to recreate (1 Timothy 4:8) but visiting bar/beer joints and nightclubs for recreation is unacceptable.
ii. Christians should avoid participating or feasting on occasions where idols are celebrated (1 Corinthians 10:28).
iii. Modernised carnivals with satanic undertones and other places where Christian integrity is questionable should also be avoided (1 Corinthians 8:10-11; 10:19-21).
iv. Watching immoral movies, listening to/singing ungodly music, and wearing seductive dresses in the name of socialisation are also ungodly things Christians must avoid (1 Corinthians 8:8-11).
v. While getting involved in secular activities, Christians should watch out and abstain from things that can make them compromise their faith (Philippians 4:8).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should identify the inherent dangers of unguarded/reckless socialisations.

CONCLUSION: Whatsoever we do to socialise should be to the glory of God and the edification of the saints (1 Corinthians 10:31).

CONCLUSION: Christians are to show moderation in social interactions.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention three biblical instances of socialisation.
  2. Distinguish between worldly and godly socialisations.

EVALUATION: Mention some examples of socialisation in the Bible and some cautions that must be followed when socialising.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father help me to always glorify you as I socialise.

ASSIGNMENT: State five things believers can do to socialise without sinning (2×5=10 marks).

NOTE:

Christian Apologetics: RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to promote and defend the Christian faith in Jesus’ Name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” – 1 Peter 3:15 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Jude 3-4 (KJV)

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The English word apology comes from a Greek word that means “to give a defense.” Christian apologetics, then, is the science of giving a defense of the Christian faith. Many sceptics doubt the existence of God and/or attack belief in the God of the Bible. Some critics attack the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16) while false teachers promote false doctrines and deny the key truths of the Christian faith. The mission of Christian apologetics is to combat these movements and instead promote the Christian faith and truth.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Know what apologetics means.
b. Explain with the Scripture why the Christian faith needs to be defended,
c. Understand how to go about the defence of our faith.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, teachers should:

a. Allow the students to read the Bible passage, recite the memory verse, participate in the class activities and do the assignment.
b. Allow the Assistant teacher to conduct the class, mark attendance and assignment, grade performance and close the class session with the closing prayer.
c. Lead the opening prayer, review previous week’s lesson, teach the lesson outlines, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignment to the students.

TEXT REVIEW: Jude 3-4.
In the above text, Jude exhorts his readers in very clear terms to be contenders for the faith. He wrote:
i. Beloved, when I gave all diligence ………. V3.
ii. For there are certain men crept in ………..V4.

LESSON OUTLINES:

REASON AND BIBLICAL INSTANCES
WITH GENTLENESS AND RESPECT
1. REASON AND BIBLICAL INSTANCES

A. There is no excuse for Christians to be completely unable to defend their faith (Jude 3-4).
i. Christians should know what they believe, why they believe it, how to share it with others, and how to defend it against lies and attacks (Colossians 4:6).
ii. We are all commanded to be ready and equipped to proclaim the gospel and defend our faith (Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Peter 3:15).
iii. The only way to do this effectively is to study why we believe what we believe (2 Timothy 2:15).
iv. This will prepare us to “demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ,” as Paul said we should (2 Corinthians 10:5).

B. Jesus was His own apologetic:
i. He often stated that we should believe in Him because of the evidence He provided (John 10:25; 10:38).
ii. In fact, the whole Bible is full of divine miracles that confirm what God wants us to believe (Exodus 4:1-8; 1 Kings 18:36-39; Hebrews 2:3-4; 2 Corinthians 12:12).

C. Paul practiced what he preached; in fact, defending the faith was his regular activity (Philippians 1:7).
i. He refers to apologetics as an aspect of his mission in the same passage (V.16).
ii. He also made being an apologetic a requirement for all believers (Titus 1:9).

D. Jude, an apostle of Jesus, wrote, “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 3).

2. WITH GENTLENESS AND RESPECT

i. Defending the Christian faith, as apologetics, should never involve being rude, angry, or disrespectful (2 Timothy 2:24).
ii. While practicing Christian apologetics, we should strive to be strong in our defence and at the same time Christ-like in our presentation (Matthew 10:16; 1 Thessalonians 2:7).
iii. If we win a debate but turn a person even further away from Christ by our attitude, we have lost the true purpose of Christian apologetics (2 Corinthians 6:3).

CONCLUSION: We are commanded to use apologetics in as many or more places as we are told to preach the gospel.

QUESTIONS:

Give three examples of people in the Bible that defended the faith.
How should believers defend the faith?
EVALUATION: Mention at least two people who defended their faith in the scriptures.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, create in me the zeal to wisely and persuasively defend this Christian faith.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five things you can do to defend the faith (2×5=10 marks).

The Redemption Package. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER: Father, open my eyes of understanding to your redemptive package in Jesus’ name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.” – Psalm 49:20 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 3 John 2-4‬ (KJV)

2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.

4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: After we surrendered our lives to Jesus, He gave us our redemption package. Inside this package is everything that will make life enjoyable. These things make Christianity delightful and beautiful. It is, therefore, expedient that we unfold our redemption package to enjoy its benefits.

LESSON AIM: To study the nature of the redemptive package giving to believers at salvation.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

Through the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Know the constituents of the believers’ redemptive package.
b. Identify the benefits of the redemptive package.
c. Understand why some do not make most of the redemptive package.

TEACHING PLAN:

To achieve the above-stated objectives, teachers should:
a. Allow the students to read the Bible passage, recite the memory verse, review the previous week’s lesson, participate in the class activities and do the assignment.
b. Allow the Assistant teacher to conduct the class, mark attendance and assignment, grade performance and close the class session with the closing prayer.
c. Lead the opening prayer, review the previous week’s lesson, teach the lesson outlines, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson, and give assignment to the students.

TEXT REVIEW: 3 John 2-4.

In this passage, the testimony about Gaius’ faithfulness prompted John to write about the joy he feels and his desire to see him- Gaius (and by extension every faithful believer) prosper. It says:
i. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.V2.
ii. For I rejoice …………………………………..V3.
iii. I have no ……………………………………..V4.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. REASONS FOR NOT ENJOYING THE REDEMPTION PACKAGE
  2. UNFOLDING THE REDEMPTION PACKAGE

1. REASONS FOR NOT ENJOYING THE REDEMPTION PACKAGE

Certain factors may be attributed to the inability of a Christian to enjoy the benefits of redemption.

A. Ignorance is one of them (John 8:32).
i. These benefits are written all over the pages of the Bible.
ii. We must search them out to know them (John 5:39; Acts 17:11).
iii. Until we discover them, we cannot enjoy them (Isaiah 5:13; Hosea 4:6).

B. Another reason is that some Christians have been wrongly taught to be content with their present state.
i. Sometimes you hear them say, “Thank God, I am saved: at least, I am going to Heaven.”
ii. Some Christians may decide to live and die like Lazarus: sick, afflicted, and poor; while others decide to live and die like Abraham; rich and healthy (Luke 16:20-21; Genesis 25:8-10).
iii. Do not be content with your present state, if it is not a pleasant one.
iv. We must revolt against lack, want, sicknesses, affliction, and any other thing that does not bring glory to God in our lives.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: How can one enjoy the Redemptive package?

2. UNFOLDING THE REDEMPTION PACKAGE

Some of the things that accompany salvation can be broadly categorised as follows:

  1. Deliverance: This is being set free from the power of darkness. This include:
    i. Deliverance from curses and evil covenants (Galatians 3:13; Romans 8:1).
ii. Deliverance from the spirit of fear (2 Timothy. 1:7). Fear has torment (1 John 4:18).
iii. Deliverance from demonic oppressions (Isaiah 49:24-26; Luke 10:19).
iv. Deliverance from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9; Ephesians 5:6).
  2. Victory: This means triumphing, dominating, etc. (1 Corinthians 15:57). In the victory package is victory over:
    i. Sin (Romans 6:14).
    ii. Enemies (Isaiah 59:19).
    iii. Devil (Revelation 12:11).
iv. Sickness and diseases (Exodus 15:26; Isaiah 53:4-5).
    v. Death (both physical and spiritual) – Isaiah 28:18a.
  3. Prosperity: Abundant provisions have been made for us (2 Corinthians 8:9; Job 36:11). However, some Christians are suffering, not because they are not saved, but because they are not meeting the conditions of the covenant of prosperity (sowing, giving, tithing, etc. – 2 Corinthians 9:6)

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should share with the class what changed in their lives since they gave their lives to Christ.

CONCLUSION: If we, as Christians, look mournful and sickly, it may be that we have not been claiming our redemption benefits. We must claim our redemption package. It is our covenant right.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention three reasons believers do not enjoy the redemption package.
  2. Mention two benefits that believers can get from the redemption package.

EVALUATION: Why do some believers not make the most of their redemptive package?

CLOSING PRAYER: If you have given your life to Christ, pray for the grace to enjoy the blessings of the redemption package Christ gave to you. If you are yet to receive Him as your Saviour, ask for the redemption package now.

ASSIGNMENT: Write five redemption package benefits that you are enjoying. (2×5=10 marks).

Spiritual Maturity. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to grow spiritually and be like Christ always.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.
MEMORY VERSE: “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?” – 1 Corinthians 3:3 (KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: Hebrews 5:12-14 (KJV)
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: Spiritual maturity is consciously leaving the longings for continuous “milk and baby steps” and growing to be like Christ. Apostle Paul expresses his disappointment in some brethren who have refused to grow spiritually. He made the following remarks:
i. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. V12.
ii. For everyone that ……………………………………………….V13.

MEMORY VERSE: “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.” – Leviticus 19:31 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Isaiah 47:13-14 (KJV)

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Alternative spirituality is a loosely defined term generally used to describe spiritual practices that do not conform to true Christianity. It is largely characterised by some spiritual practices and rituals that are often chosen by the participants to fit their individual needs. In this lesson, we shall attempt to highlight some of them and scripturally view what our perspectives should be as believers.

LESSON AIM: To teach the students about other forms of spirituality prevalent in the world and the scriptural stand on them.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

a. Explain what it means to engage in alternative spirituality.

b. Distinguish between biblically acceptable and unacceptable spirituality.

c. Name some of the alternative spirituality.

TEACHING PLAN:

To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, do class activities and assignment.

b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, mark attendance and assignment.

c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson, and give an assignment to the students.

TEXT REVIEW: Isaiah 47:13-14.

Concerning God’s judgement on the Babylonians (by extension everyone that put trust in wisdom, sorceries, magic, etc. instead of the Holy One of Israel), the prophet Isaiah declares:

i. Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.V13.

ii. Behold, they shall …………………………………………V14a.

iii. The fire ………………….……………………V14b.

iv. They shall ……………………………..V14c.

v. There shall ……………………………………V14d.

LESSON OUTLINES:

ALTERNATIVE SPIRITUALITY PRACTICES

SCRIPTURAL PERSPECTIVES

1. ALTERNATIVE SPIRITUALITY PRACTICES

The teacher should explain some of the alternative powers people seek after today:

A. Astrology and the Zodiac is the “interpretation” of an assumed influence the starry hosts (and planets) exert on human destiny (Isaiah 47:13; Daniel 2:27). According to astrology, the sign you were born under, like Aquarius, Pisces, etc. impacts your destiny.

B. Crystal sphere is the belief that a precious stone has an inherent power that can be used to man’s benefit like attracting wealth, rekindling romance, and warding off evil spirits or bad energy thus bringing good luck.

C. Necromancy is the conjuring of the spirits of the dead to magically reveal the future or influence the course of events. In the Bible, necromancy is also called “divination,” “sorcery” and “spiritism” (Exodus 7:11; 2 Kings 17:17).

D. Others include practices like:

i. Palm reading, visiting false Prophets, spiritual bathing, etc.

ii. Playing some seemingly harmless games designed to initiate people into divination

iii. Visiting websites that promise to guide and reveal destiny to unsuspecting victims

iv. Perfumes and cosmetics capable of bringing good luck or warding off bad luck

v. Using charms, amulets, or talismans, etc. (Leviticus 19:26).

2. SCRIPTURAL PERSPECTIVES

A. Astrology, crystal sphere as well as necromancy are forms of divination expressly detestable and forbidden in Scripture (Deuteronomy 18:10-14).

i. Stars, along with the sun and moon, were given for “signs” and “seasons” (Genesis 1:14).

ii. To “worship the starry host” is a clear violation of God’s law (Deuteronomy 4:19).

iii. The royal astrologers of the Babylonian court were put to shame by God’s prophet, Daniel (Daniel 1:20; 2:27).

B. Our wisdom comes from God, not the dead (James 1:5).

i. Those who are dead, either go to Heaven to rest or to hell for condemnation. Anything outside this is the conjuring of demonic spirits.

ii. Anything that seeks to manipulate the spirit world can be categorised as witchcraft.

iii. Witchcraft is named along with idolatry as ungodly behaviour (Galatians 5:19-21).

C. All the aforementioned practices involve demonic manipulations.

i. They open the one who practices them to demonic attacks.

ii. It is worshipping created things rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25).

D. The word of God is and must remain our guide through life (Psalm 119:105).

QUESTIONS:

Mention three reasons believers should avoid any spirituality outside Christ.

Give two examples of alternative spiritual practices that people get involved in.

EVALUATION: The teacher should ask the students to mention three alternative spirituality they know and state what the scriptures say about them.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, I come out of every ungodly and satanic spiritual practice in Jesus’ name.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five reasons Christians seek after other forms of spirituality outside Christ. (2×5=10 marks).

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 3:9-13

[9]And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

[10]And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

[11]And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

[12]And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

[13]And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

MEMORY VERSE: And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Genesis 3:13.

INTRODUCTION: The blame game signifies accusations exchanged among people who refuse to accept responsibility for some undesirable events or outcomes. These people shift fault and liability to another person or thing while they paint themselves as flawless. We need to examine some negative effects of the blame game and learn to take responsibility for our actions instead of passing the buck.

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM: To enlighten the students on the negative effect of engaging in the blame game.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Know what the blame game means.
b. State some of the negative effects of the blame game.
c. Mention ways to take responsibility for their actions.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, do class activities and assignment.

b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, mark attendance and assignment.

c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson, and give an assignment.

TEXT REVIEW: Genesis 3:9-13.

A. After Adam and Eve ate the forbidding fruit contrary to God’s command, the following conversation ensued between Adam and God:
i. The LORD God: called unto Adam, and said, Where art thou? V9.
ii. Adam: said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I……………………………….V10.
iii. The LORD God: said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou……..?V11.

B. Then the blame game between Adam and Eve:
i. Adam: said, The woman whom thou gavest ……….V12.
ii. The LORD God: said unto the woman, What is this ……………………………. V13a.
iii. Eve said, The serpent ……………………..V13b.

OUTLINES:
1. NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF THE BLAME GAME
2. TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
1. NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF THE BLAME GAME

The following, amongst others, are some negative effects of the blame game:
i. Chasing shadows: It makes us leave the main issue and continually look for excuses. For example, a slothful person will rather transfer blame to his boss, colleagues, government, etc. instead of dealing with laziness (Proverbs 20:4).

ii. Stagnation: It keeps us in one spot for a long time. This is counter-productive to human progress. Some people fold their arms to do nothing about their predicament because they blame and believe others are responsible for their conditions (Proverbs 22:13; Ecclesiastes 11:4).

iii. ‘Never wrong’ syndrome: We get quick at clearing ourselves of any wrong while we see every other person as being at fault (1 John 1:8; Genesis 3:12).

iv. Depression: It births unhappiness and despair which can degenerate into depression, ill health, hopelessness, etc.

v. Mental blindness: Like a veil, it prevents one from seeing clearly as the supposed wrong of others are only seen (Matthew 7:3).

vi. Hatred: It produces deep-rooted hatred as the blame gamer condemns or speaks derogatorily about the person being blamed. Hatred is a terrible sin (1 John 3:15).

vii. Pride and Ignorance combined: Pride sets in when we over-rate ourselves. It combines with ignorance because we refuse to be sincere with ourselves (Philippians 2:3).

viii. Ingratitude: Blame gamers are unappreciative as they believe their benefactor can do more (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

ix. Bitterness: Blame gamers become offended and allow bitterness to take an evil root in them (Ephesians 4:31; Hebrews 12:15).

x. Destruction of relationships: It tears relationships through suspicion and a lack of trust (1 Samuel 18:8-9).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss how to correct a blame gamer with love.

2. TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
1. Taking responsibility for one’s actions or inactions may not be easy but it is worth it in the long run. Hence, we must learn to sincerely acknowledge our wrongs when we are at fault (Psalm 51:4a; 1 Kings 21:29).

2. We must show a high level of personal accountability for our actions/inactions even in the face of failure (2 Samuel 12:13).

3. Let us ask God to create the right spirit in us so we are swift to acknowledge that there is a problem when a mistake is made or conflict arises (Psalm 51:10; 2 Samuel 24:17).

4. Identify your role in a blunder and plan on how to avoid a future occurrence (James 1:13-14).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should share their experiences on what happened when they sincerely own up to a fault.

CONCLUSION: Stop trading blames, take responsibility for your actions/inactions, and be accountable.

QUESTIONS
* Mention three negative effects of the blame game.
* How can believers take responsibility for their actions?

EVALUATION: Mention three negative effects of the blame game

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, I receive the grace not to walk in error in Jesus name

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five people in the Bible who traded blame and support it with scriptural reference (2×5=10 marks).

Gratitude. RCCG Sunday School Teachers.

OPENING PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to be grateful. (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 7 January 2024 HYMN)

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvelous works.” – Psalms 9:1 (KJV)

21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Gratitude is fundamentally about not taking things for granted. Many believe that most things they get are their rights. They believe in their sweat, smartness, and intellect, hence, they see no reason they should give thanks to anyone, not even God Almighty. This is not only wrong but a wicked and dangerous act. To be grateful is to recognise the influence and blessings of the Lord in our lives. Gratitude also means thanksgiving, thankfulness, or appreciation.

LESSON AIM: To remind the church of the act and art of gratitude.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

a. Know what gratitude is.

b. Understand the implication of ingratitude.

c. Identify ways to show gratitude.

d. Recognise its inherent gains.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, do class activities and assignment.

b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, mark attendance and assignment.

c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson, and give an assignment to the students.

TEXT REVIEW: Psalm 107:21-22.

The Psalmist expressed part of his innermost desire that people would be grateful to God. He further gave insight as to the reason and how it should be shown. He said:

A. Oh that men would praise the Lord. V21a.

B. Why?……………………………………………..V21b.

C. How?…. ………………………………………….V22.

Foundational Truth. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER: Father, teach me your truth in Jesus’ name. (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 31 December 2023 HYMN)

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” – John 17:17 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Timothy 3:13-17 (KJV)

13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The Greek word fortruth is aletheia, which means to un-hide or hide nothing. It conveys the thought that truth is always there, always open and available for all to see, with nothing being hidden or obscured. The Hebrew word for truth is emeth, which means firmness, constancy, and duration. Such a definition implies an everlasting substance and something that can be relied upon. Truth must originate from somewhere. Ignoring the truth always leads to undesired consequences.

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM: To teach students about the Truth.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Understand the root words translated truth.
b. Know what constitutes the truth.
c. Recognise false doctrine and its constituents.

TEACHING PLAN:

To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:
a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to discussion, do class activities and assignment.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, mark attendance and assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignment to the students.

TEXT REVIEW: 2 Timothy 3:13-17.

In this chapter, Apostle Paul relates the completeness and transformative power of the scripture (The truth). He says:
i. Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. V13.
ii. But continue thou in the things …………………………………….V14.
iii. And that from a child …………………V15.
iv. All scripture is given …………………..V16.
v. That the man of God …………………..V17.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. THE WORD IS THE TRUTH
  2. BEWARE OF FALSE DOCTRINES

1. THE WORD IS THE TRUTH

  1. Jesus made the simple statement I am the truth (John 14:6) and John 1:1, 14 tells us that Jesus is the Word.
  2. Mathematically, it means:
    a. If Jesus=The Truth ……(John 14:6) …………. equation 1.
    b. And Jesus=The Word…(John 1:1)…………….. equation 2.
    c. Therefore, the Word is the Truth (John 17:17).
  3. The Truth is not relative; rather it is absolute, accurate, and unchangeable (2 Corinthians 13:8; John 6:63).
  4. The truth of God’s word is divinely inspired and therefore profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16; Psalm 119:9).
  5. The word gives wisdom and direction (Colossians 3:16; Psalm 119:105).
  6. God’s word is sharp and powerful (Hebrews 4:12).
  7. If we know the word of God, we know the truth that will deliver and make us free (Psalm 107:20; John 8:32).
  8. The word of God is incorruptible: it gives us a solid spiritual foundation in the faith and an inheritance among the saints of God (1 Peter 1:23; Acts 20:32).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should share some experiences that showed them that the scripture is the truth.

2. BEWARE OF FALSE DOCTRINES

Almost speedily as the word is running with sound doctrines, the devil is also making efforts, as a busybody, to counter the effort of God through his diverse and varying false doctrines such as:
i. That Jesus is not the Son of God (1 John 4:1-3).
ii. That there is no resurrection of the dead (1 Corinthians 15:13-19).
iii. That the days of miracles are over (Hebrews 13:8).
iv. That the days of tithing are over (Malachi 3:10-13).
v. That holiness is impossible (Philippians 4:13; Luke 1:37).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss more on how to recognise false doctrines and teachers.

CONCLUSION: Time spent in ensuring that the original truth is well known is not a wasted one, after all, we know that Satan is more organised in these last days in the spread of his doctrines.

QUESTIONS:

  1. How is the word the truth?
  2. Mention some false doctrines and scriptures that counter them.

EVALUATION: The teacher should ask the students to explain what they understand by the Truth.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, let me walk in Your truth all the days of my life.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five truths revealed by Jesus contrary to popular opinion during His earthly ministry (2×5=10 marks).

Return Of A Wayward Son. AG Sunday School Manual.

Memory Verse: Luke 15:22

The father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him: and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet (KJV).

Central Truth

God’s heart is to see lost people lovingly reconciled to Him.

The Lesson Outline
1. Degradation of Wasteful Living

A. Squandered Wealth

Luke 15:11-13
B. Physical and Spiritual Poverty

Luke 15:14-16

2. Penitent Return and Joyful Reception
A. A Harsh Realisation

Luke 15:17-19

B. A Welcoming Father
Luke 15:20-24

3. Jealous Spirit Reproved
A. Refusing To Celebrate

Luke 15:25-30

B. The Father’s Great Love
Luke 15:31-32

Learning Objectives
At the end of this lesson, students will be able to: 1. Examine the detailed image of God’s love for the sinner in the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

2. Better appreciate God’s love toward all those who turn from their sin and receive forgiveness in Christ.

3. Examine their hearts to see if their attitudes align with God’s love and priorities regarding all
people.

Introducing the Lesson
Jesus saves all who are willing to follow Him in faith, but this bothered those who criticised His openness to associate with sinners (Luke 15:2).
To illustrate God’s joy over all who turn to Him, and to confront leaders with their own wrong ideas about who God loves, Jesus told three parables. The first two dealt with a lost sheep and a lost coin (verses 3-10). The third, most often called the Parable of the Prodigal Son, is the most detailed. It uses a broken family to reflect an individual’s broken relationship with God, as well as God’s deep desire for restoration to take place.

The Holy Scriptures
Luke 15:11-20,22-25,28-29

[11]And he said, A certain man had two sons:
[12]And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
[13]And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
[14]And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
[15]And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
[16]And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
[17]And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
[18]I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
[19]And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
[20]And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
[22]But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
[23]And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
[24]For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
[25]Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.
[28]And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
[29]And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

Commentary and Application
1. Degradation of Wasteful Living
A. Squandered Wealth– Luke 15:11-13

The Parable of the Prodigal Son begins as a wealthy man-who had land and servants was approached by the younger of his two sons. Not wanting to wait until his father died to receive his inheritance, the Son asked for it immediately (Luke 15:11-12). According to the Law, the firstborn son received a double portion of his father’s estate: accordingly, the younger son in the parable was entitled to one-third of his father’s wealth (see Deuteronomy 21:15-17). The father acted immediately, dividing his property between his two sons.

It seems clear that the younger son had wanted to depart for some time, desiring a lifestyle of serving only himself, far from his home. As the parable continues, his lack of preparation for the future becomes painfully apparent. He saves none of his inheritance, wasting it all on “wild living” (Luke 15:13, NLT).

The son’s journey to a distant land was not only physical- a journey of miles–but spiritual. Leaving his family behind, he revelled in the opportunity to cast off all restraints of wisdom and godliness. Instead, he plunged into loose, foolish, and reckless living. As he wasted his inheritance, he surrounded himself with others wasting their lives as well.

Questions for Application
How, and why, can matters of wealth and inheritance create a rift, even in Christian families?

What are some kinds of “distant country” temptations that present themselves today, and how can we overcome them?

B. Physical and Spiritual Poverty–Luke 15:14-16

The wayward son’s lack of foresight and preparation would soon catch up with him (Luke 15:14). Just as his wealth was gone, the entire country he was in experienced a famine. (These calamities usually resulted from adverse weather or crop disease.) In the context of the parable, it seems this development happens as if by God’s own hand, in the same way that God sent both the storm and the great fish in the life the rebellious prophet Jonah (see Jonah 1:4,17). Suddenly, the son was in need, on the verge of starving.

Having worked only for his father, the younger son now sought to work for a local farmer (Luke 15:15). The setting of the parable is Gentile territory, and this Jewish man found himself in the degrading work of feeding pigs–unclean animals, forbidden for consumption by Jewish law (see Leviticus 11:7-8). As a result, Jesus’ Jewish listeners would have easily recognised the depth to which the younger son had fallen.

In this time of famine, the son did not earn enough to meet his needs, and no one else was offering him anything either (Luke 15:16). All he could think of was how good the pigs’ food looked–pods that some identify as those of the carob tree, an evergreen native to the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. Sadly, the younger son had gone from eating at his father’s table to wishing he could dine on the disgusting food of pigs, all because of his reckless, sinful choices.

Questions for Application
How did the younger son’s terrible choices prepare him for his eventual, humble return to his father? What can this teach us about sin today?

Do you think God might use poverty and pain to lead someone back to Him? Give examples from the Bible, or even your own experience.

2. Penitent Return and Joyful Reception

A. A Harsh Realisation–Luke 15:17-19

The turning point of the Prodigal Son’s life takes place when he “came to his senses” (Luke 15:17, NLT). He realised his father’s kindness and generosity, even toward his hired workers. When he lived in his father’s house, his judgement was clouded by his desire to escape the bounds of responsibility and right living. Now, suffering in hunger among a herd of pigs, he could picture the “food enough to spare” (NLT) enjoyed by those working for his father.

The Prodigal’s return was better planned than his departure into a life of sin. Most importantly, he was not only returning to his friends and home; he was returning to his father, the very one who was central to the account of his leaving (verse 18). Knowing he had fallen short of both his earthly father’s standards ant those of God himself, he planned to open his appeal by admitting his wrongdoing. Realising that his actions did not reflect the values of his father, the son would also confess his unworthiness to bear his father’s name (verse 19). Further, he would not expect to return to his previous status as son, but would take his place among his father’s hired
servants. In all this, the actions of the Prodigal revealed that he trusted his father to receive him-at least as a hired labourer.

Questions for Application
In what ways can temptation to sin blind a person to the blessings God has placed in his or her life?
Why is it crucial that those coming to Christ realise they have sinned not only against loved ones and human authority, but against God himself?

B. A Welcoming Father–Luke 15:20-24
The father had been looking for his son’s return, and his wait was finally over (Luke 15:20). The father responded with compassion. Instead of lecturing his destitute son about his moral and financial errors, he ran to him and welcomed him with open arms. Instead of hardening his heart toward the son who insisted on leaving the estate, his heart was filled with a love that had anticipated his return. The vivid detail Jesus used represents, in a sense, the way that God the Father treats those who go to Him in repentance. The Prodigal’s father running, embracing, and kissing his errant son provides a picture of total welcome and acceptance, Note that Luke 15 begins with the religious leaders complaining that Jesus welcomed and ate with sinners (verse 2), God’s attitude toward the lost contrasts starkly with that of these self- righteous individuals, people who were content both to ignore and to reject those they considered beneath them.

The parable continues with the father interrupting his son’s planned speech (verses 21-22). Before the son could ask to become a hired servant, the father did the opposite of what the son was expecting. Having heard his son’s confession of sin, he commanded his servants to treat the son like royalty. The robe was fitting for a guest of honour. The ring was not only a sign of luxury and wealth: it also stood for family authority. The sandals signified status; his footwear may have worn out on the journey
home.

The father spared no expense in the celebration, ordering that the fattened calf-kept ready for such an occasion-be killed for a feast (verse 23). The reason for the celebration was simple; his son, feared dead, had returned alive. Lost to those who loved him, he was now found. The terminology of “dead” and “alive” refers elsewhere in the Bible to the difference between a sinful condition art and salvation (verse 24; see Ephesians 2:1-5). In addition, “lost” and “found” connect this parable with those of the lost sheep and the lost coin earlier in Luke 15; in each of these three parables, God’s joy in a restored relationship with penitent sinners is at the forefront.

Questions for Application
Why is It important for Christians to emphasise God’s great love when they share the gospel with others?

What are some ways We can declare God’s joy over new believers and backsliders who have returned to God?

3. Jealous Spirit Reproved
A. Refusing to Celebrate–Luke 15:25-30
In Luke 15:25, the older son-not mentioned since the beğinning of the parable- returned from his work in the field. From the house came the sound of music and dancing. (Note that this terminology is used in various biblical instances to celebrate God and His works; see Exodus 15:19-21; 2 Samuel 6:14-15). Interestingly, the older son had no idea what was going on. (This detail of the parable may infer that the older son had distanced himself from the family to some degree; see verses 26-31.) When the older son found out the reason for the great celebration-his younger brother’s safe return-he refused to take part (verses 26-28).

In verse 20, the father had gone out deliberately to receive the repentant younger son. In verse 28, he deliberately went out to plead with his proud, stubborn, older son to join the celebration. His love for both of them is evident. In the same way,
God’s love reaches out to the unsaved, to the new believer, and to those struggling to grow in their walk with Christ.

The younger son had confessed his wrongdoing. Now, the older son drew attention to his own years of faithful, but heartless, service (verse 29). This verse includes a strong imperative word in Greek, which can be translated “Lo!” (KJV); “Look!” “Behold!”; or “See!” In this setting, it was a very disrespectful word for the older son to use toward his father, as seen in what follows in verse 29. One can sense a degree of animosity toward the father in this.

The older son complained that despite all of his Work, he had never been given even a young goat for a feast-a lesser gift than a fattened calf-as a reward. He also distanced himself from his younger brother, calling him “this son of yours” when speaking with the father (verse 30, NLT). He was disgusted that his father celebrated the return of his sinful, wasteful brother. Like the religious leaders whom Jesus was addressing, the older son could not understand the forgiveness and acceptance of someone who had strayed so far away from God’s plan.

Questions for Application
What are some lessons you can learn from the parable thus far?

How may long-term believers might be tempted to feel jealousy for the attention given to new believers or returning backsliders?

B. The Father’s Great Love–Luke 15:31-32
When the younger son returned, the father did all that was needed to celebrate his well-being and repentance. For the older son, the father did all that was needed both to assure him of their relationship and to emphasise the need to celebrate the wayward brother’s return (Luke 15:31-32). Addressing him tenderly as “dear son” (NLT), the father then acknowledged the son’s continued presence over the years. The father also affirmed the availability of his wealth to him; the older son would lose nothing as a result of the grace showed to his younger brother.

However, the father also pressed the need to celebrate the Prodigal’s return (verse 32). Yet, it was not only appropriate to celebrate the younger son’s return; but it was morally necessary. The son had been lost and apparently dead, yet now he had come back safe and sound into the loving arms of his father.

In all three parables of this chapter, there is a call to rejoice when the lost sheep, lost coin, or lost son is found. The Parable of the Prodigal
Son illustrates this need the most completely of the three. Mature believers must guard against attitudes of self-righteousness, and celebrate whenever someone receives Christ, as well as whenever a prodigal returns in repentance.

Questions for Application
What are some examples of the “wealth” God’s children enjoy in this life?

How can a church balance ministry to the lost, discipleship of new believers, and long-term
discipleship for mature,
believers?

Call to Discipleship
How should we treat those coming to Christ, as well as those returning to the faith? Although tempted to inspect their sincerity, our primary response must be joy great joy. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Jesus used an earthly father to illustrate God’s response to each and every human being who turns to Him and receives the forgiveness available in Christ. The Prodigal Son was received with gladness, compassion, and extravagance after coming to his senses and returning home to his father. Since Scripture describes rejoicing in heaven over the repentance of the lost (see Luke 15:7), Christians as individuals and as the Church- should celebrate as well when a person enters the family of God. Such a response not only honours God, who saved them, but it also provides a rich and memorable welcome in the church to those who have accepted Christ.

Ministry in Action
Examine your attitude toward new believers. Are you judgemental or supportive about their new life in Christ?

Find ways to include new believers in activities with mature believers. Be intentional about making connections that can last a lifetime.

Ask God to work through you to draw non-Christians to Him, and prodigals back to Him.

A Lying Tongue. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER:

God, help me to be truthful in all my ways.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

God, help me to be truthful in all my ways.

TODAY’S LESSON

BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 5:1-10

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

MEMORY VERSE: PROVERBS 12:19

The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

INTRODUCTION

A lie is a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive or convey a false impression. Lying is the act of deviating from the truth. It brings about difficulties and it can be mentally tiring. A lying tongue is a tongue given to telling lies.

Some people have branded lies and given them different colourations like; white lies, grey lies, black lies, and red lies.

Also, some justify the reasons for lying in course of their businesses or to save their faces but all unrighteousness is sin.

TEACHING METHOD:

The Lecture Method.

TIME MANAGEMENT:

The teacher should apply the two-lesson outline teaching time.

OUTLINES:

1. TRAITS OF A LIAR

2. ANTIDOTES TO LIE

1. TRAITS OF A LIAR

The teacher should explain the traits of a liar as follows:

1. According to 1 John 2:22, a liar is a person who denies that Jesus Christ is Lord.

2. The devil is a liar and the father of all liars (John 8:44).

3. A liar claims to know God but does not obey His commandments (1 John 2:4).

4. The Scripture so relegates a liar so much that it says a poor man is better than a liar irrespective of the liar’s achievements in life (Proverbs 19:22b).

5. Anyone given to lies is an individual with the old man fully at work in him/ her (Colossians 3:9).

6. No matter how smart a liar may be, the lie or falsehood will only be for a time before the truth is established (Proverbs 12:19).

7. A liar is a proud person who must lie to sustain the fake lofty height and the wrong impression created (Psalms 119:69; 59:12; 12:3).

8. A liar is disloyal, unfaithful, and a betrayer who deceives at will (Proverbs 14:5, 25).

9. A liar destroys by executing a well-planned misrepresentation that may endanger lives (Psalm 109:2; Jeremiah 14:14).

10. Anyone who lies or is always given to falsehood is regarded as a wicked person (Proverbs 17:4; Psalms 58:3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Have you ever told a lie, what prompted it?

2. ANTIDOTES TO LIE

A. Believers must be conscious of their new status in Christ and be watchful (2 Corinthians 5:17). Therefore, it is expedient to:

i. Be intentional about telling the truth all the time (Romans 9:1).

ii. Learn to bridle our tongues (Psalm 39:1).

iii. Ensure our words are few and devoid of exaggerations (Ecclesiastes 5:2; Proverbs 10:19).

iv. Learn to be slow to speak (James 1:19).

v. Let our Yes be Yes and No be No (James 5:12).

B. Speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) takes a lot of discipline but it brings peace and honour to God – who cannot tolerate liars (Psalms 15:1-2; 24:3-5).

C. Above all, we must remember eternity! No liar will get to heaven (Revelation 22:14-15).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

What other things can be done to stop telling lies?

CONCLUSION: RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS MANUAL 24 DECEMBER 2023

A liar has no worth on earth and no place in heaven.

QUESTION

* Mention three traits of a liar.

* Mention two things believers can do to avoid lying.

EVALUATION:

What are the negative things lying can bring to us?

CLOSING PRAYER:

Father, deliver me from a lying tongue in Jesus’ name.

Hypocrites In The Church. RCCG Sunday School Teachers.

OPENING PRAYER: Father, I refuse to be a hypocrite. (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 17 December 2023 HYMN)

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.” – Matthew 23:27 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Job 36:13-14 (KJV)

13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them.

14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: A person who pretends to be something that he/she is not is a hypocrite. It is not just making a mistake but a deliberate plan to pretend, deceive or cheat. The person is dirty inside but appears clean outside (Matthew 23:27).

LESSON AIM: To teach students about hypocrites in the church.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

a. Know who a hypocrite is.
b. Understand the forms and why some people engage in hypocrisy.
c. Discover the consequences of hypocrisy.

TEXT REVIEW: Job 36:13-14.

The passage above describes the miserable condition of hypocrites:
i. The hypocrites in heart are always angry V13a.
ii. They cry not for help when God bindeth them. V13b.
iii. They die in ……………………… V14.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. FORMS AND REASONS FOR HYPOCRISY
  2. CONSEQUENCES AND REWARD OF HYPOCRISY

1. FORMS AND REASONS FOR HYPOCRISY

A. Hypocrisy can take three forms:
i. Professing belief in something and then acting in a manner contrary to that belief (Isaiah 29:13).
ii. Looking down on others when we ourselves are flawed (Matthew 7:3-5; Romans 2:1).
iii. Projecting ourselves to be what we are not (Romans 12:3) – this is common on social media.

B. Jesus describes hypocrites as:
i. Wolves in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15).
ii. White-washed tombs (Matthew 23:27).
iii. Snakes and broods of vipers (Matthew 23:33).
iv. Graves (Luke 11:44).

C. There are several reasons people engage in hypocrisy. Some of these include:
i. Pride of life (1 John 2:15-16).;
ii. Desire for men’s honour (John 12:43).
iii. A feeling of insecurity (2 Corinthians 10:12).
iv. They want to be respected in the church as being holy but in secret, committing sins (1 Samuel 15:13-15, 20, 25-30). Ananias and his wife wanted the praise given to Barnabas when they were not as faithful (Acts 4:34-37; 5:1-10).
v. Some people pretend to be who/what they are not to cheat (Genesis 27:20-22). People who declare false records and inaccurate tithing fall under this category (Proverbs 11:1).
vi. Self-indulgence may be another reason for hypocrisy (Romans 16:18).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The teacher should ask students about other reasons for hypocrisy in the church.

2. CONSEQUENCES AND REWARD OF HYPOCRISY

A. The consequences of hypocrisy may include:
i. Bad leadership (1 Samuel 15:24).
ii. Shame and disgrace (Jeremiah 13:25-26).
iii. Punishment (Proverbs 11:21).
iv. Curses (Job 15:34-35).
v. Untimely or spiritual death (Job 36:13-14).

B. God knows all things including the secret deceit of the heart (Psalm 44:21) and all the ways of man (Job 31:4; Psalm 1:6). Therefore:
i. No one can hide from Him or deceive Him (Psalm 139:7-12).
ii. He will repay every man according to his works (Revelation 22:11-12).

CONCLUSION: Hypocrisy is a sin against God, the only solution is repentance (Isaiah 55:7).

QUESTIONS

  1. Mention four reasons for hypocrisy.
  2. What are the consequences of hypocrisy?

EVALUATION: State the three forms of hypocrisy you know.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, help me to be true to You and to myself in Jesus’name.

ASSIGNMENT: Identify five (5) enemies of sincerity (No mark).

Lesson From The Ten Lepers. RCCG Sunday School Teachers

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to turn my weakness into strength as I learn from the four lepers

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?” – 2 Kings 7:3 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Kings 7:1-5 (KJV)

1 Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord, To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.

2 Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.

3 And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?

4 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.

5 And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: In Bible times, people suffering from skin diseases like leprosy were treated as outcasts. There was no cure for the disease, which gradually left a person disfigured through loss of fingers, toes, and eventually limbs. It is, therefore, surprising and challenging how God decided to use these categories of people to bring relief to the nation of Israel during the famine, despite their limitations (1 Corinthians 1:27).

LESSON AIM: To teach students lessons from the biblical four lepers.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Understand that one can live above limitations.
b. Know practical values that can help one to live above limitations.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, do class activities and assignment.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, and mark attendance and assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignment to the students.

TEXT REVIEW: 2 Kings 7:1-5.

A. In this passage, Prophet Elisha prophesying concerning the famine experience in Samaria says:

B. But a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said:
i. Behold, if the LORD would ……………….V2a.
ii. And Elisha said, Behold, thou shalt see ………..………………V2b.

C. Meanwhile, there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die? V3.

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. LIVING ABOVE LIMITATIONS
  2. LESSONS TO LEARN

1. LIVING ABOVE LIMITATIONS

A. Teachers should explain the meaning of limitations as:
i. Obstacles on our way to the fulfilment of God’s plans and purposes for our lives especially as Christians.
ii. Setbacks, stagnations, and losing out in the battles of life.

B. The sources of limitations may include but are not limited to:
i. Spiritual (Daniel 10:12-13).
ii. Human misdeeds or errors (2 Samuel 4:4).
iii. Natural occurrences (Exodus 14:10).
iv. Afflictions (Exodus 3:7).

C. In our Bible passage – 2 Kings 7:1-5, leprosy (among other diseases) confined and restricted the purpose for living of some men:
i. These lepers were treated as outcasts; they stayed outside the camp (Numbers 5:2-3).
ii. They could not live among their brethren (Leviticus 13:45-46).
iii. They were confounded to the entering of the gate (2 Kings 7:3; Luke 17:12).

D. We are bound to have challenges as Christians (Jeremiah 1:19).
i. The good news is that God has assured us of being more than conquerors through Christ (Romans 8:37).
ii. However, we have a lot to learn from the case of the lepers in 2 Kings 7:1-5, who asked themselves a fundamental question “Why sit we here until we die?”

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should share any experience where they succeeded in spite of difficulties.

2. LESSONS TO LEARN

The teacher should ask the students to mention the lessons that can be learned from the actions of the four lepers. He/she should then explain the lessons as follows:

  1. Unity: The lepers were united. Unity is strength and it is easy to accomplish a feat when we are unified (Amos 3:3; Psalm 133:1-3).
  2. Purposefulness: They were determined to achieve their goal and this helped them to conquer their fears despite their condition (2 Kings 7:4; Daniel 1:8).
  3. Understanding: They were able to analyse and interpret the situation they found themselves in. This informed the decision they made and there was no strife amongst them (Proverbs 20:3).
  4. Daring: They were audacious. They made up their mind to go to the camp of the enemy irrespective of the odds (Esther 4:16; 2 Kings 7:4).
  5. Resolute: Twilight is a period of obscurity or haziness but the lepers were not deterred. Even in this period of uncertainty, they still went ahead with their plans. Do not give up on your dreams (2 Kings 7:5a, Daniel 3:15-18).
  6. Saving Culture: Do not eat with “10 fingers!” After eating to the full they still kept some behind. Savings is important to grow big (2 Kings 7:8; Proverbs 21:20).
  7. Compassion: They rebuked themselves and went to report their findings to the king’s household so that everyone could benefit from the booty (2 Kings 7:9; 1 Peter 3:8).
  8. Stop Procrastinating: Immediately they decided to tell the porter of the city their discovery they followed it with a decisive step. They did what they thought in their mind (Proverbs 13:4; 2 Kings 7:10a).
  9. Share Information: They did not wholly withhold information about all that they saw at the Syrian camp. They took the good news to the right source; the king (Hebrews 13:16; 2 Kings 7:10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should mention other lessons that can be learned from the lepers other than the ones stated above.

CONCLUSION: As believers, we must see beyond our limitations and fulfil our purpose (Philippians 4:13).

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention three sources of limitation.
  2. Mention two lessons believers can learn from the four lepers.

EVALUATION: Teachers should ask the students to explain how they can fulfil their purpose in the face of limitations.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, I receive the grace to fulfil my purpose irrespective of limiting circumstances around me.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention five people in the Bible who overcame their limitations and fulfilled their destinies. (2×5=10 marks).
