BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 John 2:15-17

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

MEMORY VERSE: 1 John 2:15

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

INTRODUCTION

A Christian is a person who has accepted the Lord Jesus as his Lord and personal saviour and is Iiving a holy life with the ultimate goal of making it to Heaven (1 Peter 1:3-4).

However, there are three terrible enemies- “the world system”, “the flesh”, and “the devil” – contending with the believer daily, to make the Christian journey difficult and impossible (Acts 20:29-30).

In this study, we shall consider the enemy called “the world system.”

OUTLINES:

1. Satan’s “World System”

2. God Has A “New World”

1. Satan’s “World System”

The Bible uses the word “world” in three ways.

First, it can refer to the earth, which God created (Genesis 1:1; Acts 17:24).

Second, the “world” can refer to people, as in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world…”

A third use is found in 1 John 2:15, where the believer is warned not to love the world or the things in the world.
“The world” in this passage refers to the “operating system of the world” – which is satanic.

Since the fall of Adam and Eve, Satan has not changed his mode of operation (Genesis 3:11-13):

He has been consistent at deceiving; manipulating and dominating those who refuse to completely yield themselves to God (Romans 6:13, 16).

The “software” Satan designed to turn man against his maker is still working in the world (Ephesians 2:2-3; 2 Corinthians 4:4).

Satan controls his evil ‘world system’ and uses the attractive things of his world to deceive and destroy people (Matthew 4:8-9; 1 Peter 5:8).

i. Satan’s “world system” comprises money, materialism, cultism, addictions, lust, selfishness, greed, pride, etc.

Also, Satan uses filthy and worldly music, adulterated TV reality shows, sexy movies and indecent dressing to entice innocent souls by flooding their minds with wrong thoughts and getting them involved in unspeakable vices.

He convinces people to repel against higher authorities (Jude 8).

This is what Apostle John summarises in 1 John 2:16
“For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.”
There is nothing good or godly in these things.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1

Mention other tools of the “world system’.

2. God Has A “New World”

Satan’s ‘world system’ hates God, it hates God’s Son-Jesus Christ, and it Hates God’s people.

Hence, the Bible clearly warns against friendship with the world (James 4:4).

God will one day destroy Satan’s world system (2 Peter 3:10).

This world has been ruined by sin, but God has a “new world” for those who love him.

It is called “the kingdom of God.”

The Lord Jesus is the King and Ruler of God’s new world (Isaiah 9:6; 1 Corinthians 15:25).

When we surrender our lives to the Lord Jesus to be our Lord and Saviour, God takes us out of Satan’s kingdom of darkness and puts us into “the kingdom of His dear Son.”

We are no longer in Satan’s ‘world system’ (Galatians 1:4; Colossians 1:12-14).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2

What can believers do to be part of the “New World”?

2. Be challenged to believe God’s promises, even when they seem impossible.

3. Commit to obey God, even when His instructions may seem illogical.

Introducing the Lesson

John the Baptist was a key figure in the first coming of Christ. He served as Christ’s forerunner, calling people to repent in preparation for His coming. This message of repentance made him a celebrated figure among the Jewish people, in that corruption had arisen among the leaders in Jerusalem. As a result, John was extremely popular among the people who desired spiritual reform. However, this message of repentance (and, therefore, a call to reformation) brought about opposition as well.

And so, God raised up John to proclaim repentance and declare Christ. and John faithfully fulfilled that caling. The message of repentance remains important today, for repentance opens the heart to receive Christ’s marvellous gift of grace: salvation and eternal life.

The Holy Scriptures

*Luke 1:5.* “`There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

11. And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

16. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

18. And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19. And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21. And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

22. And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

57. Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

59. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

60. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

61. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

67. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

68. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people.“

Commentary and Application

1. John’s Birth Foretold
A. A Prayer Had Been Answered

Luke 1:5-13
As we examine John the Baptist’s life, we see that the miraculous power of God played a central role in his ministry. This was
true even in the announcement of his birth, described in detail by-Luke. John was born to a priest named Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth (Luke 1:5). They were both godly people and advanced in years, yet they had no children for Elizabeth was barren (verses 6-7). Zechariah
served in a particular group of priests, which was ministering in the temple at the time of the events in this passage (verses 8-10). Centuries earlier, King David had separated the priests into divisions and determined the order in which they would serve
(see 1 Chronicles 24:3). While Zechariah was serving his time of duty by burning incense in the temple at a time of prayer, the angel Gabriel appeared to him (Luke 1:11).

This startled Zechariah, but the angel quickly assured him with some good news: God had heard his prayer (verse 13). Some have concluded that Zechariah was praying for a son. However, two facts weigh against this idea. First, Zechariah and his wife were old and
could no longer expect children. Second, as the priest representing the people, Zechariah would have been presenting the needs and petitions of the nation, not his own personal requests. As a result, many scholars conclude that Zechariah, like all of the godly people in Israel, would have been praying for the coming of the Messiah. This was the great hope and desire of the nation, that God would send the Promised One to His people.

Questions for Application
Describe a time when God answered a prayer of yours or that of somneone you know. What was the prayer, and how did God’s answer impact your life?

What are some of the most common things we, as Christians, pray for today? To what extent do these common prayers reflect the priorities God calls us to have as believers?

B. John: Empowered by the Holy Spirit
Luke 1:13-17

While God had answered Zechariah’s prayer, He also provided an additional blessing: Zechariah
and Elizabeth would have a son (Luke 1:13). Such a blessing was clearly a miracle from the Lord. God
identified the child as a boy and instructed that the couple name him John. The name John means “the Lord is gracious,” or “shows grace.” John’s name was an indication that the time of God’s grace was about to begin. The angel also spoke in detail about John’s character and the effect he would have on his family as well as on the nation (verses 14-17).

Among the things the angel revealed about John was the fact he would be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb (verse 15). This underscored the importance of the work God had planned for John the Baptist. God had a specific ministry in mind fo for John’s life, and He empowered John for it at the very beginning of his life.

As we explore these verses, we gain a great lesson about preparation for ministry in this scene. Just as John needed something
more than human ability to do the work God had given him to do, so we need divine power to minister effectively today as well. Luke 24:49
illustrates this truth. The disciples had spent three years walking with Jesus and learning from Him. Yetbefore He sent them forth into the world, He instructed them to wait in Jerusalem until they received “powerfrom heaven” (NLT). This refers to the baptism in the Holy Spirit, which they received later, after Christ’s ascension, on the Day of Pentecost.

Luke 1:16–17 further states that the work of John the Baptist would be a twofold work. First, sin and unbelief had separated many of the Jewish people from their God. John, living a lifestyle of separation from the world around him, would remind the people of their need to turn back to God. Second, unbelief had come to permeate whole families, as people ignored the Word of the Lord. As a result, there was dwindling hope that the people would serve God in future generations. But John would help restore the people to a place of obedience, ready to receive the promised Messiah, according to what was taught by the former generations.

The message of John’s ministry still rings true today. We too must prepare our hearts for Christ’s rule
and daily submit to His rule. We need the Spirit’s power in our lives to minister effectively and powerfuly in a sinful world.

Questions for Application

How does the Holy Spirit help us in ministry today?

In what ways might we practise a lifestyle of separation amid our world?

2. Zechariah’s Reaction
A. Zechariah Expresses Disbelief

Luke 1:18-22
Zechariah’s first reacted with disbelief to the angel’s message (Luke 1:18). This can be attributed to his and Elizabeth’s age at the time of the announcement- both were well beyond the normal age of procreation. Yet as a godly and pious Israelite-and a priest in the temple-Zechariah ought to have recalled some critically important events from lsrael’s past. No doubt, he knew well the story of Abraham and Sarah, and how Sarah bore a child in her old age (see Genesis 15:4; 17:5,15-17; 21:1). Similarly. Rebekah was barren for twenty years before giving birth to Jacob and Esau (Genesis 25:20-26). And Rachel hạd been barren before giving birth to Joseph (Genesis 30:22-24). It is noteworthy that all three of these examples, and the children born from them, played significant roles in the furtherance of God’s plan in sending His Son Jesus, the Messiah.

These marvellous miracles gifts from God — foreshadowed an important truth that Christ himself would teach. Zechariah needed torealise the truth later shared by Jesus In Matthew 19:26, “With God everything is possible” (NLT). The God we serve has performed miracles to further His plan from the very beginning. Even so, Zechariah struggled with a sense of disbelief at what was told to him. As a result, the angel Gabriel took away Zechariah’s ability to speak (Luke 1:19-22). This lasted until the naming of the baby after he was born (verses 62-64). Yet even though Zechariah could not speak, those who were at the temple quickly identified that something amazing had happened to him. They concluded that he must have seen a vision from the Lord. Truly, this was no ordinary day.

Zechariah’s loss of speech Would serve two purposes. First, it was a penalty for his lack of belief in response to Gabriel’s message. Second, it would serve to confirm the truth of what Gabriel had said. If the angel could silence Zechariah for a
period of time that would extend for months, then restore that speech, clearly the word of Gabriel was true. The baby he promised, John, would indeed be born.

Questions for Application

Why do you think that even a man like Zechariah would struggle to believe the message from Gabriel?_

What might we learn from Zechariah’s example?_

What do you think is the significance, if any, of the many examples of God providing a child for a barren woman during the working out of His plan for the coming of the Messiah?

B. The Lord Is Kind
Luke 1:23-25

After his time of service In the temple came to an end and Zechariah had returned home, Elizabeth became pregnant, just as the angel had told him (verses 23-24), and she responded with gratitude (verse 25).

Elizabeth found great joy in being a part of what God was doing among His people, and her joy was especially personal in that He was
working through her. God has-enabled- this woman who was past the age of childbearing to become pregnant. In Bible times, a wife felt great sadness and a sense of disgrace when she was childless, and God had delivered her from this. Furthemore, God had a marvellous plan for her son, and He even empowered him before he was born. Gabriel’s words reveal the providence of God. He had exercisedControl over minute details of John’s life, and Elizabeth was a part of what He was doing.

The great detail found in Luke concerning the birth of John underscores the importance of the role John would play in salvation history. Keep in mind the purpose of John’s birth. According to verse 17, John came to prepare the Jewish people for the coming of Christ. He laboured for the lofty goal of pointing hearts toward the Saviour of the world. John played a crucial role in it. God exercised His sovereign power so John could take his place in the history of salvation.

Questions for Application
Describe a timne when God has been unexpectedly kind to you._

What are some situations today that leave people feeling disgraced, and how can Christians minister love to such people?

3. John’s Birth
A. John’s Arrival

Luke 1:57-68
John was born, just as the angel had foretold, and a time of great celebration ensued (Luke 1:57-63).

According to the Law, Zechariah and Elizabeth brought their son to becircumcised on the eighth day, awhich point it was Customary that the
child’s name would be announced. While the family assumed they wouldname him after his father, Zechariah, Elizabeth announced that the child would be named John, as the angel had instructed (see Luke 1:13). As noted earlier, John’s name means “the Lod is gracious,” a name with twofold significance. It represented the answer to their prayers for a son. And it also announced that God’s grace was about to be poured out upon His people, and ultimately upon the world. John would be the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Note that confused family members turned to Zechariah for an explanation as to what the child should be named. (John was not a name used in that family.) Zechariah had been unable to speak since the angel had visited him. (This loss of speech came as a resut of his doubt
about the angel’s message.) So, Zechariah confimed the name in written form (verses 62-63).

The moment Zechariah wrote the child’s name, his speech was restored in response to his obedience. The praise Zechariah offered in that moment underscored the glory of the event. The news of thiss miracle spread quickly (verses 65-66). Multitudes of people in the area reflected on the seriousness and: significance of what had happened and wondered what it all meant.

Obedience is still, and will always be, a central part of our walk with God. When we step ut in obedience to God and call upon Him to work in our circumstances, His power and His grace will be evident to those around us. Even those who are merely observers are often awed
by God as He works.

Questions for Application

In what ways can obedience to God serve as a testimony to others today?_

What are some other examples of how the name of person in the Bible reflected God’s plan in that person’s life, or in the world?_
B. John’s Call
Luke 1:76-80

In Luke 1:76-79, Zechariah delivered a word of blessing over John, but this was no ordinary parental blessing. Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke a prophetic message over his son (see verse 1:67). Zechariah prophesied that John would be the forerunner of the Messiah, telling of the salvation of God through forgiveness of sin. John would proclaim God’s mercy, personified in His Son, the Messiah (verses 76-79).

And so, over the years to come, John grew physically as well as in spirit (verse 80). His life would be spent in harsh and barren lands,
eliminating distractions and providing an ideal place for him to prepare for his crucial ministry.

Questions for Application

How do you proclaim the message of Christ to those around you?_

In what ways might God have prepared you for the ministry or service He has called you to do?_

Call to Discipleship

A new era began when God sent His Son Jesus to be the Saviour of the world. After centuries of preparation and prophecies, God sent a forerunner, a man named John, to prepare the way for the Messiah. While we may not have had a dramatic call from birth as John did, God has called each of us to follow Him and to point the way to salvation through Jesus.

Ministry in Action

Find a tangible way to serve someone, pointing them to Christ.
Examine your life, asking yourself if you are being obedient to God.
Lookfor ways you can represent Christ in your job and other activities.

Don’t Buy Sexual Lies. AG Sunday School Teen Manual

TEXT: Gen 1:27-28; Prov 7:21-23; 1 Cor 6:18-20: Eph 5:5-6; 1 John 3:2; Jude 7; Rev 22:12-15

KEY VERSE: 1 Corinthians 6:18
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. (NIV)

Focus
As uncomfortable as it may be to discuss today’s topic with your class, it is one that shouldn’t be ignored. From the television screen to the classroom, today’s teens are exposed to a steady stream of messages about sex. Sadly, most of what they’re hearing directly contradicts the teaching of God’s Word.

Contrary to what your students may think, God isn’t against sex. But like many of His wonderful gifts, sex is often mishandled and perverted. This is where the trouble starts. Today’s study emphasizes that, while sex is touted as normal behaviour, it comes with a host of tragic consequences. The most serious of all is the possibility of eternal separation from God. That’s not something your students will ever see portrayed on television.

As you prepare for this study, take a few moments to examine your own attitudes about sexuality. If you feel a little on the edge about broaching this topic with a group of teens, don’t worry. Spend some time in payer, asking God to give you the right words so you can communicate the vital truths of Scripture to a generation that is waiting to hear.

The Basic Message: Explain to students…

 WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?
We are constantly bombarded with sexual temptation in what we see and hear, and are encouraged to do what secular society deems okay.

 WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Sexual immorality can ruin your life and destroy your relationship with God.

 HOW DO I LIVE IT?
Guard yourself from being deceived by the sexual lies of our culture and avoid situations that can lead to sexual temptation.

Activity Option: ADS UP
Bring to class several magazines. (Be sure there is nothing inappropriate in any of them.) As the session begins, have students go through the. magazines and analyze the advertisements. Discuss the following questions:

• How do the ads play on human insecurities, desires, etc., to make people want these products?
• What information is conveniently left out?

Guide

Explain that when someone is trying to get us to buy into an idea, we should probably ask ourselves what’s not being said. For instance, the message that sex outside marriage is okay is promoted in magazines, in music, and in the lives of many celebrities. But we rarely hear the most important details: Sexual sin brings devastating consequences.

Study Overview: Explain that today’s study considers…

• The consequences of sexual sin.
• How to respond to sexual deception and temptation.
• Why it is important to keep our bodies and minds pure before God.

Inform and Discuss
a). Sexual immorality has consequences
1. Read or have a volunteer read 1 Cor 6:18-20. What do you think verse 20 means when it says we were bought at a price?

Hint

The Scripture establishes Christ’s authority over our lives. When Jesus died on the cross, He purchased our forgiveness from sin and freedom from its penalty. When we accept Him as our Saviour, we willingly turn our lives over to Him in exchange for the eternal life He offers.

2. What does this have to do with sex?

Hint: As children of God, every part of our lives our minds, talents, resources, and even our physical bodies belong to God. We must submit them to His authority and use them in ways that bring honour to Him, We should flee from anything that would tempt us to do otherwise, which includes sexual temptation.

3. Read or have a volunteer read Prov 7:21-23, What are some of the consequences of sexual sin? [Hint: Emotional devastation, guilt, loss of self-esteem, loss of reputation, sexually transmitted disease, unplanned pregnancy, damaged relationships, etc.]

4. What is today’s popular attitude toward sex? [Hint: Many people believe as long as everyone involved is consenting, no harm is done. But both Scripture and common sense say otherwise. God created sex to be experienced within a marital relationship. When we violate that plan, we invite disaster.

b). Reject the deception of sexual sin
Guide: Read or have a volunteer read Jude 7. Point out that cultural acceptance of sexual immorality is nothing new. But cultural acceptance has never equaled divine approval. So, no matter what t the rest of the world chooses to do, we must obey God’s Word.

Read or have a volunteer read Eph 5:5-6. Why do you think verse 6 warns us not to be deceived about who can enter God’s kingdom? [Hint: There have always been people who seek to convince themselves and others that God overlooks and tolerates immoral behaviour. God wants us to understand such claims are false so we won’t be deceived by them.

Guide: Read or have a volunteer read Rev 22:12-15. Point out that sexual immorality is listed among the sins that separate people from God for eternity. Of all the consequences of sexual sin, this is by far the most serious.

c). You were made to be like God
1. Read or have a volunteer read Gen 1:27-28. What do you think it means to be made in the image of God?
Guide: Explain that being made in the image of God doesn’t necessarily have to do with physical attributes. Instead, of all created things, we have the distinction of being set apart to enjoy a relationship with God and reflect His love, compassion, and character. We are designed to be living expressions of the Master Creator

2. How can sexual sin interfere with a person’s ability to fulfill God’s plan?

Hint: Engaging in sexual immoral acts is an affront to God. It carelessly disregards the fact that all parties involved are created in God’s image. Those who view pornography, for instance, see people as objects rather than God’s precious creation. Over time, perceptions of self, others, and God become increasingly twisted and perverted until we no longer resemble any of the things We were created to be.

3. Read or have a volunteer read 1 John 3:2-3. What was John trying to tell his readers?
>>Guide: Explain that the larger passage (1 John 2:28-3:10) in which these verses are found emphasizes the importance of turning from unrighteousness and allowing God to purify our hearts. Rather than pursuing sinful desires, we pursue Christ as we look forward to His return. We must never stop striving to become more like Him. Those who continue to live in sin while professing Christ do not have a genuine relationship with Him.

Involve Them: AIM HIGH

Distribute paper and pens or pencils. Ask students to list a few of their goals for the future, such as graduating from tertiary institution, starting a career, marrying, having children, etc. Discuss with students how sexual sin could derail their plans. Then discuss how remaining pure and committed to God will help ensure a better future, both in life and in eternity.

Inspire Them: Remind students “The Basic Message” of this study (pg 90). explain WHAT the Big Idea behind the study is; WHY it matters; and HOW we can live the lesson captured in the study.

Invitation Option: Remind students that sexual sin separates us from God. But so do other sins. Thankfully, God offers a remedy. We can be restored to a right relationship with Him by turning from wrong choices and asking Him to forgive us. Offer to pray for any student who wants to be restored to right relationship with God.

Ministry Option: A WAY OUT

Explain that everyone faces temptation, but we don’t have to give in to it. The Bible promises that God will always provide “a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Cor 10:13). With the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, the knowledge of the Word of God, and the power of prayer, we have everything we need to make right choices and remain loyal to God.

Conclude by leading the class in prayer, asking God to give your students faith in that promise and to help them resist the temptation to sin sexually.

Teacher Hint: Ask Yourself…
1. Can students name some consequences of sexual sin?
2. Do they understand that separation from God is the most serious consequence of all?
3. Do they know what it means to be made in the image of God, and how that relates to sexual purity?
4. Have they had a chance to seek for forgiveness for sexual sins they may have committed?

Being Born Again. Part 2. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to fully operate in the dominion You gave to man.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the Assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: “Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” – Romans 8:30 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 5:1-5 (KJV)

1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Being born again is not a title or an entitlement. Rather, the evidence must be in living a sanctified life and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead/control one’s life. Furthermore, an understanding of the concepts of justification and assurance of salvation is very essential to the establishment of a new convert in Christ. This study attempts to shed some light on these basic concepts of the Christian faith.

LESSON AIM: To guide the students who are born again on the concept of justification and assurance of salvation.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Understand justification and what is involved.
b. Know how justification can be attained.
c. Identify ways they can be assured of their salvation.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, do class activities and assignment.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, mark attendance and assignment.
c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give an assignment.

TEXT REVIEW: Romans 5:1-5.

Apostle Paul while addressing the Romans on the subject of Justification, highlights other grace we enjoy through Jesus Christ our Lord. He, therefore declared saying:

i. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: V1.
ii. By whom …………………………………V2.
iii. And not ……………………………….V3.
iv. And Patience ……………………….V4.
v. And hope …………………………….….V5.

LESSON OUTLINES 1: A JUSTIFIED LIFE

A. To justify simply means to declare someone righteous.
i. Meaning, God begins to see you as you have never sinned (Romans 3:21-25; 5:1).
ii. The law and the justice of God demand death as the penalty for sin (Ezekiel 18:4) and punishment for the wicked (Isaiah 57:20-21).

B. Two major events are obvious with justification:
i. One is that the sin is forgiven, and the punishment of that sin is removed from the sinner (Isaiah 43:25).
ii. The second is that the righteousness of Jesus Christ is credited to the sinner’s account (Romans 5:18).

C. The justified life is obtained.
i. Simply by grace (Romans 3:24).
ii. By the blood of Jesus Christ (Romans 5:9).
iii. By His resurrection (Romans 4:25).

D. Now that we are born again,
i. We ‘wear’ a justified life identified by peace with God
ii. We also have a vibrant, enjoyable prayer life (Romans 5:1-2).

E. However, we must continue to work out our salvation with fear and trembling by avoiding sin (Philippians 2:12; 1 John 3:9).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should share how they knew they have been justified.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: ASSURANCE OF SALVATION

A. As a new creature in Christ, it is important to have the assurance of salvation. This assurance can be found:

i. In the word of God (Romans 10:9-11),
ii. Through the witness of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16)
iii. Through the evidence of a changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17).

B. Feelings or comments of people are unreliable for your assurance; therefore, do not lean on them.
i. Be warned of doubts that may arise about your salvation.
ii. Do not open the door to sin, worldliness (1 John 2:15-16), laziness in praying and constant study of the word of God (2 Timothy 2:15).

C. Be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18; Jude 20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should share other ways they are assured of their salvation.

CONCLUSION: Once you are born again, you receive the righteousness of Christ and the Holy Spirit impresses on your heart that you have become a child of God.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention the two major events at justification.
  2. How can believers get assurance of salvation?

EVALUATION: Teachers should ask the student to discuss their understanding of Justification.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, I believe I am Yours and I thank You for this great privilege.

ASSIGNMENT: Reflect and act on the lesson of today for assurance of your salvation if you are still in doubt (No mark).

Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will
be able to:

1. Understand and demonstrate biblical characteristics of a Christian disciple.

2. Appreciate what it means to be led by the Spirit.

3. Grasp the importance of loving others as part of the lifestyle of the Christian disciples.

Introducing the Lesson

There are clear descriptions in Scripture of what it means to be a
follower of Christ. At the foundation of these descriptions is a close,
personal relationship built on faith in and submission to God. Such a relationship is clearly described in Scripture. The life of a Christian disciple is a life guided by the Holy Spirit, a life that resists and rejects
sin in favour of God’s leading, and a life that is marked by lovo tor God and others. Today’s lesson examines that life from the standpoint of Scripture.

The Holy Scriptures

Galatians 5:16“`This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

17. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

18. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23. Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

24. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

25. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.“`

1 John 3:2`“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

3. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

5. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.“`

Commentary and Application

1. Be Led by the Spirit
A. Listen and Obey

Galatians 5:16–18

All those who love Jesus desire to please Him through the way in which they live. The foundation of such a lifestyle involves walking in the Holy Spirit (rather than fulfilling the desires of the flesh). Paul wrote of this in Galatians 5:16-18. For many Christians, the concept of hearing the Spirit’s voice can be intimidating. They might tend to think that only certain people have that privilege, or that hearing the Spirit means Some kind of great sign or booming voice from heaven.

As we look at Scripture, we see that God spoke, and continues to speak, in many ways. Often He spoke through a gentle whisper. So,
we ought to greet the idea that God speaks to us with a sense of peace and anticipation rather than intimidation. Note that Paul said there is a very real battle going on within the hearts of believers. Because we continue to live in this
fallen world, we struggle with our old nature, which wants to do evil (verse 17). Indeed, we are no match for this struggle within ourselves. But we have the great assurance that the Spirit gives us the right desires, and the strength to pursue them. It is a constant struggle, indeed. But with the help of the Spirit, we can follow the voice of the Lord as we are led by Scripture as well as His still, small voice, which guides us in the right direction.

Behaviour that is the result of hearing from God is not the same as
living according to man-made rules. Walking in the Spirit is liberating
Christianity is not based on a set of rules and regulations. It is based on a relationship with God.

Questions for Application

Describe a time when you heard from the Holy Spirit._

What is one example of a time when God specifically used Scripture to speak into a situation in your life?_

B. Roots Produce Fruit

Galatians 5:19-26

Certainly, salvation is not rooted in our fruit, but in the grace of God. We must recall, though, that behaviour is a sign of what is going on in the heart of a person. In Galatians 5:19-21, Paul listed the works of the flesh, that is, the lifestyle indicators of someone who is Iiving according to sinful desires. If a person is living a lifestyle marked by acts such as sexual immorality, witchcraft, selfish ambition, and divisive words and actions, it is clear that the individual is not in relationship with Jesus. These people will not inherit the kingdom of God.

It is an equal mistake to say that good behaviour will unite a person with God. Good behaviour, rather, reflects what is going on in the heart of the individual. When people accept Jesus as Saviour, they receive a new, transformed nature.

The new nature, equipped and empowered by the Spirit, allows them to cultivate their spiritual roots through a growing relationship with God. The cultivated roots produce the kind of living that God desires. Christians do not go to heaven because they are good. Rather, because of their relationship with God, their behaviour will be righteous.

Moving on to verses 22-26, it is worth noting that the phrase, “the fruit righteous. of the Spirit,” is singular. Paul did not
intend for his readers to select a particular fruit and work on getting better at it. Indeed, our own “work” cannot make us better at producing
fruit. It comes forth as a result of the work of the Spirit in a believer’s life.

The ninefold fruit is representative of the type of behaviour that will naturally grow in a Christian’s life as the Spirit works within that individual. The goal for the Christian is to cultivate a godly root
system through ongoing communication with God, walking with Him rather than pursuing the ways and values of the world. When this occurs, people will natural land supernaturally-display love, joy, peace, etc. This is the essence of Jesus’ statement that people will know Christians by their love for one another (see John 13:35).

Cultivating one’s spiritual roots does not occur automatically. Satan desires to entice believers to return to their rotten roots. Christians need to continually say “no” to the flesh and “yes” to the Holy Spirit. This can only happen if we determine to hear and obey the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Questions for Application

How has your behaviour changed as you have matured in Christ?_

How do you cultivate your spiritual root system?_

2. Stop Sinning
A. Act Like Your Father
1 John 3:1-6

Some people say that all people are children of God simply because He created them. But Scripture makes it clear that this notion is false.
In 1 John 3:1-6, John drew a contrast between those who are the children of God and those who are not. Through the sin of Adam and Eve, humanity forfeited a relationship with God. Now we need redemption through Christ to restore that relationship. We become God’s children through salvation, and only God’s children will enjoy eternal life with Him. Living in sin is a reflection of one’s spiritual state. Every human being is either a child of God or a child of the devil (see verse 10).

Regardless of what they claim, if people live a sinful lifestyle that disregards God, they are not God’s children because His children will reflect His characteristics. John says that it is impossible to be God’s child and to continue to live in sin. Jesus came to earth to free people from sin.
If the person conveys no evidence of transformation, that person has not embraced the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Questions for Application

What is one predominant characteristic, either physical or behavioural, that you received or learned from your parents?_

What is one predominant characteristic thatyou received or learned as a result of your relationship with your Heavenly Father?_

B. Don’t Be Fooled

 1John 3:7-10

Earlier in John’s first Epistle (1:8-10), he made it clear that a Christian who claims to be sinless is a liar. Christians will struggle and sin on occasion, but the Holy Spirit is faithiui to make the Christian aware of the sin and draw the person to repent. God promises to forgive
those who repent. However, when Christians continue to practise sinful behaviour, ignoring the promptings of the Holy Spirit, they are not reflecting their relationship with God (3:7-10). When this occurs, Christians will naturally grow cold
toward the Lord. Eventually, this person risks turning away from God entirely, at which point the person can no longer call himselfor herself a Christian.

John was dealing with a group of people in the church who attempted to justify sinful behaviour. Even today, some spiritual leaders look the other way when people gossip, live immoral lives, or otherwise follow the ways of sin. False teachers defend their position by arguing that people are saved by faith rather than by right actions. While it is true that we are saved by faith, true faith in Christ will produce right actions on the part of the faithful. The Bible teaches that we must love God with our whole beings. A person’s behaviour will follow his or her belief. Those who teach otherwise appeal to the flesh, which leads to destruction.

Some people would not appreciate John’s bluntness, but he was clear that those who live in sin are the offspring of Satan and will spend eternity with him. Those who are the children of God will do what do what is right and love others.

Questions for Application

Questions for Application

Why do you think some people feel drawn to adopt legalism as a way of life, trusting in god works to make them right with God?_

_How would you describe what it means to live a life of freedom in Christ?_

3. Love One Another
A. The Great Love of God

1 John4:7-12

In 1 John 4:7-12, John drew a contrast between a godly person and a person who does not kno God. Those who show love for others are
godly. Those who do not love others make it clear that they do not know God. This may seem harsh, but one cannot be a true reflection of God without loving people, because “God is love” (verse 8). Love is, in a sense, His defining characteristic. Obviously, because we are not God, loving others can be difficult. Not everyone is easy to love. Yet, with God’s help, we can love them anyway.

John indicated that only Christians can display true love to others because love comes from God. People who do not know God can offer a type of love, but it is not pure, godly love because its source is fleshly. Godly love compels us to see others as people made in His image.

John stated that God showed His love for us through His gift of Jesus Christ, His Son, as the sacrifice for our salvation. Such a gift was given because He loved us, not because we loved Him. Paul described this in his Epistle to Romans: “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8, NLT).

Christians, in turn, are called to share the great news of God’s love with those who need to come into relationship with Him. God’s love was
shown to all. While people were still His enemies, Jesus demonstrated the ultimate act of love to them. The generosity of God, as seen through sending Jesus to the Earth for our salvation, should be lived out in our Iives regardless of how others treat us, God desires that His followers become beacons of love that will luminate a path toward Him. God expresses His through us as we love those around us.

Questions for Application

What makes God’s love so unique in this world?_

In what ways can Christians demonstrate their love for God and others?_

B. Confident Living

1 John 4:13-21
When people respond to Jesus in faith and become His followers,
God gives them “his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us” (1 John 4:13, NLT). The Spirit reminds the Christian of God’s love, which ought to naturally flow from their lives, and He helps them walk in that love. When a Christian makes aselfish decision, the Holy Spirit will point that out. As Christians live in and practise God’s love, they can rest in the assurance of their salvation (verses 16-17).

We may struggle to have love for every person, but as we live for God, our love for Him and for others “grows more perfect” (verse 17, NLT; note that “perfect’ carries a sense of being “complete”). We know that growing in God’s love is one of the greatest joys of living for Him. Just as a child is excited about progress on the growth chart, we can take joy in our spiritual growth as we practise love for others. God’s love also delivers the believer from fear(verses 17-18).

Perhaps the most common, fundamental human fear is death and the day of judgement. Thankfully, we as Christians can experience freedom from fear. For us, death is the entrance into everlasting life. This does not mean that we can live or act recklessly, tempting death —-and thereby tempting God. But our hope does provide confidence when we face God “because we live like Jesus in this world” (verse 17, NLT).

In verses 19-21, John ended this passage by reminding readers that the true test of a Christian’s faith is how they treat others. If believers hold grudges, cause quarrels, or gossip about others, for example, they are not living as followers of God, and they risk wandering away from God in pursuit of their unloving desires.

A lack of love is inconsistent with what it means to be a servant of our supremely loving God. But love for all —-including those we’d rather not love —–bears evidence that our love for God, and commitment to Him, is indeed real.

Questions for Application

_What is your biggest fear, and how can God’s love help you overcome that fear?_

_How can loving others change their lives as well as your own life?_

Call to Discipleship

While our behaviour matters to God, He does not expect us to live godly in our own strength. We have the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and to find victory over temptation. God desires that we love others so that, when they see His followers, they will have an accurate picture of Him. As disciples of Jesus Christ, our behaviour should reflect our Father. If not, we need to cultivate our relationship with Him. The fruit of a godly life will follow.

Ministry in Action

Spend time listening for the voice of the Holy Spirit and purpose to obey and follow as you grow in the Lord. Commit to a deeper study of Scripture, praying that God will use His Word to help you overcome temptation. Find a practical way to demonstrate God’s love to someone in your church or community this week.

Learn To Discern. AG Teen Sunday School Manual

Text: Judges 17:6; Prov 12:15; Luke 18:11-14: Eph 5:5-7; 2 Tim 4:5

Key Verse: Philippians 1:9-10

This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ. (NIV)

Focus
At its core, “tolerance” is often little more than a rejection of moral absolutes. It is subtly becoming the same thing as “compromise.” Its advocates label those who disagree as close-minded or rigid or judgmental. There may be students in your class, who, in order to avoid being labelled any or all of these, have allowed themselves be influenced by the social views of tolerance-even to the point of error. Responding to these students in a way that is overly dogmatic and rigid r ay drive them further from biblical world view.

Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading, and gracious point students toward Scripture rather than publicly belittling them or pushing your personal opinions. Help them understand why we must also cling to the unchanging truths of God’s Word. As you prepare for this study, ask God to make your life a shining example of His love and compassion. Ask Him to point out any area of compromise or pride that could hinder your ministry to the teens. Open your heart once again to His forgiveness, grace, and mercy so you can sincerely share it with others.

The Basic Message: Explain to students..

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?
The definition of tolerance, so popular in our culture today, often clashes with God’s standards for our lives.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?
We need discernment to identity and reject influences and values that pose a danger to our commitment to Christ.

HOW DO I LIVE IT?
Learn how to respond to ungodly standards, commit to a lifestyle that pleases God, and demonstrate Christ’s love to others regardless of their lifestyles.

Activity Option: FACT OREICTION
Write the following statements on the board:
• Some books are mysteries.
• Things Fall Apart is a book.
• Things Fall Apart is a mystery.

Then discuss: How would you determine whether the third statement is true?

Guide: Explain that there are many ways to determine the truth of certain statements – e.g., libraries, textbooks, internet articles, etc. But when it comes to issues of morality, faith, and conduct, the Bible MUST be the ultimate source.

The more we study God’s Word, the more easily we’ll be able to sort out fact from fiction in our lives and in the world around us.

Study Overview: Explain that today’s study considers…

• How the notion of tolerance can be misleading.
• The role discernment plays in the life of a Christian.
• Why it is important to balance our knowledge of God’s command with His compassion for the lost.

Inform and Discuss
a). How do you respond to tolerance?
>>Guide: Point out that Jesus welcomed all kinds of people, both the sinners and the righteous. His message, however, NEVER changed.

1. Read or have a volunteer read Philp 1:9. What does love have to do with knowledge? [Hint: Our love must be balanced by wisdom and knowledge. As we express Christ like traits of compassion and graciousness, we should not blindly accept or advocate behaviours and attitudes that are in opposition to God’s character.

Guide: Read or have a volunteer read Philp 1:10. Explain that the word discern means to distinguish, recognize, or detect. Knowing God and His Word, via a growing relationship with Him, helps us to distinguish right and wrong, recognize Satan’s schemes for what they are, and detect falsehood in the world philosophies around us.

2. According to Philp 1:10, what is the primary purpose of godly knowledge? [Hint: God wants us to become discerning, pure, and blameless. He desires for us to know the truth so we can live it in the midst of a corrupt and sinful world.

3. Does that mean we shouldn’t speak out against sin? [Hint: Absolutely not. But we must be sure our words and attitudes reflect a gracious heart and a right relationship with God. Our motive must be to communicate the gospel, not drawing attention to ourselves.

b). Your lifestyle matters to God
1. Read or have a volunteer read Judges 17:6. In what ways does this sound like our world today?
Hint: During the time of the Judges, people repeatedly turned from God’s truth to pursue their own perverted plans. Today, most people are defining their morality according to their individual passions and inclinations, rejecting any suggestion that they will have to answer to God for their choices. We become most vulnerable when we choose to abandon God’s Word and Spirit in favour of doing things our own way.

2. Read or have volunteer read Prov 12:15. Name situations in which an ungodly viewpoint is touted as morally right, while biblical perspective may be seen as narrow-minded. [Note: Denying the authority of God’s Word in the name of “tolerance” is foolishness.

3. Read or have volunteer read Eph 5:5-7. Why do you think this passage warns of deception? [Hint: Satan’s biggest lie is that we can live as we desire without consequences. But the truth is that it does matter to God how we live; for He created us for a purpose. All who go their own way and refuse to turn to God will be separated from Him for eternity. Anyone who says otherwise is a deceiver, fooling themselves and others.

c). Put love into action
1. Read or have a volunteer read Luke 18:11-14. What was the Pharisee’s error? [Hint: He thought he was justified before God, but pride kept him from seeing his need for forgiveness. Though he was religious, he did not understand the heart of God.

Note: We have no room to be prideful or look down on others, regardless of their sins. We should approach non-Christian with love and humility, not haughtiness or self-righteousness.

2. Read or have a volunteer read 2 Tim 4:5. How would you respond to someone who says you’re intolerable because you believe eternal life is only available through a relationship with Christ? [Guide: Encourage students to balance their response with grace.]

Guide: Explain that, as Christians, we do have a responsibility to share the gospel with others. Though some may think it’s best to remain silent in the name of tolerance, God wants us to proclaim the name of Jesus in a gracious and humble manner. Not everyone can be a full-time minister, but we’re all called to take the good news of Christ wherever we go.

Involve Them: Brainstorm a project the class could do together that would communicate the love of Christ to the community. For instance, offer to do a work for the elderly. Make plans to carry out your project. Remind students that doing something to help others is always more effective than looking down on them.

Inspire Them: Remind students “The Basic Message” of this study (pg 86) Explain WHAT the Big Idea behind the study is; WHY it matters: and HOW We can live the lesson captured in the study.

Ministry Activity: SELF-ASSESSMENT

Encourage students to take a few minutes to reflect on their lives and consider how they usually respond to ungodliness in the world around them. Do they display a prideful, self-righteous attitude like the Pharisee in Jesus’ parable? Do they hesitate to get involved for fear of being viewed as narrow-minded or intolerant? Do they adopt sinful behaviour themselves, figuring it’s no big deal since everyone else is doing it? Or do they strive to live for Christ and share His truth in a manner that is gracious, humble, and loving?

Conclude with a prayer, asking God to give students discernment and help them live out His Word daily. Also offer to pray individually with anyone who expresses a personal need.

>Teacher Hint: Ask Yourself…
1. Do students know the difference between tolerance and Christian compassion?
2. Can they explain the meaning and importance of discernment?
3. Have they been challenged to share the gospel in a gracious way?

The Cost Of Discipleship. RCCG SOD Year Three

There are certain facts you need to know. The devil knows very well that if you cannot get a trunk, then you can get the branches. For example, as it is written in John 15:5 where Jesus said:

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing”.

He said that if I cannot get a vine , I can get the branches . Not only that, it is also a fact that the Lord decreed that the first and foremost thing that the disciple should do is to cast out devils. In Mark 16:16, the Bible says:

“And these signs shall follow them that believe : in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues”.

The first thing the Lord said is that they will cast out devils. The Lord decreed in John 14:12,

“Verily, verily I say unto you, he who believes in me, the works that I do , he will do also; and greater works than these he will do…”.

And what he said is settled. He said the “work that I did, you shall do” and greater work that He did, we will do. All you need to do is just believe that you will be able to do these things. And the devil know that in 1 John 3:8 it is written:

“For this purpose the son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil…”

Now, within three years, he did a lot of destructions of the works of the devil. And when he was going He said, ” You my disciples, what I did to the devil, you will do it, and you will do more”.

Of course, the devil will then be a fool to fold his arms, and allow himself to be totally destroyed. Whatever you want say about the devil, never call him a fool. Because he is not a fool. I mean according to Ezekiel 28:12, the Bible says he is full of wisdom. In Ephesians 6:11 , the Bible talks about the wiles of the devil. I mean he is not a fool. He knows that the disciple is going to destroy him. So he says, it is alright, before you destroy me, I think I have to do something. According to John 10:10 which says:

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill and to destroy : I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly”.

So the devil loves to do that one normally to anyone. Whether you are a disciple or not, he wants to steal from you. He wants to kill , he wants to destroy. But when he now comes to the disciples, he deliberately lo0ks for the disciples to destroy them.

Methodically, he searches out for the disciples for total destruction. And he does this as if it is a form of self defence.

In 1 Peter 5:8, the Bible tells us what you should do and what the devil is trying to do. The Bible says:

“Be Sober, be vigilant , because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour”.

This is what the devil does. And to devour means to wipe out completely because the devil has learned from experience. When he dealt with Samson, and he removed his eyes, if he had known that Samson would be restored by God, he would have destroyed Samson immediately. So from that moment, he has learned his lesson. Rather than let the disciple live, he would rather destroy him completely.

This is where the cost of discipleship comes in. If you read 1 Peter 5:8-9 , you will see what being a disciple of Jesus Christ will cost:

“He said be sober, be vigilant , because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour, whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished your brethren that are in the world”.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT BEING A DISCIPLE WILL COST YOU?

#1 Constant Soberness

You cannot even smell something that you will say it is not too bad. You are not even allowed to touch certain things that other people would say are not too bad.

I will want to read Ephesians 5:1-4 and Ephesians 4:29, the Bible says the disciple cannot even joke as the people of the world joke. Children of God have things to say that will cause them to laugh but that would be impure. There must be no trace of worldliness and no trace of sin in their joking. Rather than that, they should remain quiet.

#2 Constant vigilance

The second one is constant vigilance. He said be sober, be vigilant . That is verse 8. There , soberness is the first thing. Vigilance is the second thing. Now, where we say be vigilant, many people know that the price of safety is constant vigilance. According to 1 Thess. 5:17 , the Bible makes it abundantly clear that the disciple cannot even relax for a moment. He says pray without ceasing!. That means there is no time where you will stop praying.

#3 Constant resistance

You are to resist the devil steadfastly, it is there in verse nine, It said,

“Whom resist steadfast in faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world”.

In other words, there must be constant resistance against the devil. The Bible says in Ephesians 4:27. “Neither give place to the devil”. You must not give the devil an inch. Resist him steadfastly, it is a do or die battle. Dont give him a chance.

#4 Constant Holiness

If you are going to resist the devil constantly , that means you must live a life of constant holiness, because according to Hebrews 12:4 , you are to resist sin, even to the blood.

As a matter of fact, when we talk of resisting the devil, the most important thing is resisting sin. Because when you don’t sin, then the devil cant catch you. The matter is settled when you don’t sin.

#5 Constantly subdue the flesh

1 Cor. 9:25-27

“And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now, they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air, But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection; lest by any means , when I have preached to others, I myself should not be a castaway”.

Subdue the flesh. It has to done on a constant basis. The fact that you were victorious yesterday does not mean that there will be no battle to fight today. As a matter of fact, the more serious the battle of yesterday, today’s battle could be better.

If you pass primary six examination, nobody is going to give you primary five exam next year. It will be form one examination and that would necessarily be tougher than that of primary six.

You have to constantly subdue the flesh. Brother, there will always be sisters who will bring immoral thoughts to your mind. Just looking at them will keep you thinking. Check yourself before you go far.

The moment you begin to indulge in immoral thinking, you can try, write it down. The day you begin to have immoral thought within you.

Very shortly, you are going to reap because the enemy will attack you. You are going to suffer a reverse.

The moment he begins to bring immoral thoughts, that is a dangerous signal. It means God wants to do something good for you and the enemy wants to block the way. Do not allow him, tell him to get behind you. If you resist him, he will flee and you will get your victory. This does not apply to brothers alone. The same is true of sisters.

#6 Drastical Surgical Operation

Sometimes surgical operations may be necessary on allies of the enemy in your body. There are some allies of the devil that are constantly helping him get you into trouble. I am sure you know it yourself.

Matthew 5:29

“And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee, for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell”.

Your best friend is the one talking here, If your right eye is going to get you into trouble, cut it off. In Matthew 5:30, He said:

“And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off and cast from thee”.

There is an animal called Grass cutter. Its hand is caught in a trap and it tries to pull it out without success, and feels that it will soon be day light that the hunter will arrive to kill it, what does he do? It will use its own teeth to cut off its hand . It will cut off that part that is entrapped, so it can escape alive. We ought to be as the Grass cutter. If your right hand is going to get you into trouble, cut it off.

I know a brother that God is using mightily in the ministry. There was a prophesy when he was engaged to a sister, the prophesy came and said, “Son, thou says the Lord, you are about to fornicate with the fellow you are going to marry”. He said “My father , If I fornicate, don’t spare me, as soon as I do it, strike me with leprosy”. Then the husband to be came to the sister, there was a prophesy that came that I am going to fornicate with you, and I have already told God when I do it , He must strike me with leprosy. The sister stayed away from him until they married because she didn’t want a leper husband.

Don’t joke with sin. If the right hand is going to cause you to sin, cut it off. If the enemy is running after you and you are about to get into your own territory and your leg is caught in a barbed wire and they are pulling you with the leg and your friends are pulling you to their side, what will you do to that leg?

#7 Wearing your armour to bed

The cost of discipleship involves wearing your armour to bed. You do not put off your armour even when you go to sleep.

Ephesians 6:11

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil”.

You are the one to put the whole armour on yourself.

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”.

In 1 Thess. 5:5-9, the Bible says,

“Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day; we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night and they be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ”.

The plan of God for you is total victory. But we must wear our armour to bed. There must be a time where we must leave our armour. Even when you go to take a bath, we must go with our armour. In pray over the water I am going to take for my bath. Some of you don’t do that. What if that water is already poisoned? Some of you dont pray before you eat. Oh, how can I pray over food prepared by my wife? Supposing that food has been poisoned by another person? How can there be danger in my house? You must be joking. Now we have agents of the devil around.

You see a disciple of Jesus Christ and the devil knows you. He knows God has decreed you will destroy his work and himself. And he wants to destroy you before you can destroy him. Nobody can blame Satan for doing so. It is your duty to make sure he does not get you first.

Talk to God and say, “Father I am in your hand , I will be your disciple till the end. I am not going to run, but Father give me the grace to be vigilant, to be sober, to remain serious, to pray without ceasing all days of my life, to remain holy and spotless so that the enemy will not be able to catch me”. Ask Him for help.

The WIles Of The Devil. Part One. RCCG SOD Manual

Ephesians 6:11

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the Devil”.

The Bible has an advice for those of us who are disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to beware of the wiles of the devil.

What are these wiles of the devil? We will want to look at the major ones, that is flattery.

Everyone, (at least before you are born again ) has at least one weak point. This weak point usually becomes the stronghold of the enemy. If the devil discovered that you have a weak point, he will then want to use that weak point as his own stronghold. You may say, “I have no weak point”, however, there is one weak point that is common to everybody, and that is that everybody want to be number one. Anyone who does not want to be number one (at least before they are born again) must be sick. The devil knows it and God knows it.

What the devil does by the use of flattery is just to add petrol to the fire of pride that is in every individual.

Before you are born again, I am sure you attended parties and you observed the method used by the musicians to collect money. it is by use of flattery.

Even if you were a messanger, they begin to call you names and say you are the Managing Director even when you know you are not the Managing Director. But you had always secretly wished you were a Managing Director. So while they sang your praise, the little kobo you had in your pocket , before you knew it, you gave to them. That is Satan ‘s method in flattering people so that they do things that they wouldn’t normally have done. In fact, the Bible says that anybody who flatters you is spreading a net for your feet. If somebody spreads a net for your feet, he intends, of course, for you to be caught in that net. And if you look at Proverbs 29:5, the Bible says:

“A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet”.

When somebody flatters you, he is planning your ruin. That is why God hates flattery. God hates flattery because anyone who flatters you is just laying a trap for you and is preparing trouble for you, God says to the flatterer, “I will deal with the fellow”.

Examples of those destroyed by Flattery:

#1 Eve

In Genesis 3:4-5, what the devil said to Eve there essentially is this:

“Eve you are less than God in only one thing, and that is that you have not eaten this fruit. If you eat this fruit, you will become as wise as God, Then you will know the difference between good and evil”.

And Eve said “That is true I would like to be like God”. The devil spread a net for her feet and unfortunately , she went into it.

#2 Joshua

Joshua 7:2-4 How did Joshua fall?  They had just defeated Jericho; he also sent spies to spy Ai. And when the spies returned , they send unto Joshua:

Joshua fell because he felt big- the conqueror of Jericho. We dont have to use all our strength on a little town like Ai. And then if you look at Joshua 9:2, the devil used the same trick on Joshua again and he fell. You see, some neighbours in the country where he was conquering came to him and said, “Oh ,. your God is great, fantastic. He can do anything, we just want to be your friend , because of your great God. Enter into partnership with us. Joshua fell int0 the trap.

#3 Samson

Judges 16:6 . Delilah flattered Samson until he fell into the hands of the enemy. Judges 16:6 says:

“Ans Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightiest be bound to afflict thee”.

Look at what she said first. “O man of Great strength, where did you get this strength is great. Tell me, is there any possibility of anybody of anybody ever conquering and tormenting you? What is the source of this great strength ? And when Samson heard “a man of great strength,” he fell into the trap.

#4 NEBUCHADNEZAR

Daniel 4:29-33 : The Devil whispered to him, “Oh Great Nebuchadnezzar, look at the great Babylon, that you built, no king like you. Is there any king that can build something as great as this?” And Nebuchadnezzar fell for it and of course, he paid for it.

#5 King Darius

If you look at Daniel 6:6-9, you will see the example of Darius. He was another King in the time of Daniel and he loved Daniel. He knew Daniel was serving the living God . He was a very hard working and honest man, and he would not want any evil to happen to him. But the enemies wanted to get Daniel.

They went to Darius, -“Oh Darius, there is no king like you. You are very wealthy , you can supply the needs of the whole nation for at least one month. We want you to make decree telling everybody, “Nobody must ask anything from any man or any god for one month, except from you. And Darius fell for their plan. And that is how he was persuaded to get Daniel to the lion’s den.

So, how do we escape the net that the flatterers can set for us? How do we escape from the wiles of the devil?

HOW TO ESCAPE FROM THE WILES OF THE ENEMY

To escape from the wiles of the enemy, you have to:

#1 Steer clear of flatterers

In Proverbs 20:19 the Bible says:

“He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore not with him that flattereth with his lips”.

So do not play with anyone that flatters.

#2 Whenever anyone flatters you, reject it immediately

In Matthew 19:16-17 , the Bible tells us that a man came to Jesus Christ and said: Oh, you are a good man and Jesus asked, why he called him a good man and that anybody is good except God. He returned the flattery immediately. Dont accept flattery . When somebody tells you you are greater than what you are , tell the fellow , “dont say that to me again”.

3. You must refuse to be the channel the devil can use to flatter. Therefore , refuse to be a flatterer because it is a very dangerous thing to do. So, you should refuse to flatter anybody.

4. If there is any pride in you, ask God to help you to be crucified with Christ, in Galatians 2:20 . Paul said:

“I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I live in the flesh I live by faith of the Son of God who loved me, and gave himself for me”.

if you are dead , then nobody can flatter you. If you are dead to anything people call great or wonderful, the devil cannot come around and begin to call you Managing Director when you are nothing. So steer clear of flatterer. Refuse flattery when it is brought to you. Refuse to be a channel for flattery and anywhere in your life where there is still pride, ask the Lord to push it out. Ask him to remove anything the devil may use in your life.

Being Born Again. Part One. RCCG Sunday School Manual.

TOPIC: Being Born Again (Part 1)

MEMORY VERSE: “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” – 1 Peter 1:23 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-7

1 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;

5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:

6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Being born again is a state of conversion from being a sinner to becoming a saint. It is a spiritual transformation that leads to a change of heart and life (John 3:3-7). Being born again is an act of God whereby eternal life is imparted to the person who believes, confesses his/her sin, and accepts Jesus Christ as his/her personal Saviour and Lord. If we claim to be born again, there must be notable pieces of evidence to prove that we are children of God (Romans 8:14).

LESSON OUTLINES:

  1. A SANCTIFIED LIFE
  2. A SPIRIT-CONTROLLED LIFE

1. A SANCTIFIED LIFE

If we are born again, it is expected that we live a sanctified life: a life devoid of sin, separated unto God and Christ-like (Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:13). This is what it means to be a Christian or a Child of God.

It is the will of God that His children are sanctified (1 Thessalonians 4.3). Jesus’ followers are expected to be sanctified (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24; 1 Peter 1:15-16). This great privilege and experience (sanctification) are obtainable by the word of God (John 17:17), the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 13:12), and by heart surgery as the individual daily surrenders unto God (Ezekiel 36:25-27; Romans 6:13). As children of God, we are empowered to live holy, bear the fruit of the Spirit, and have a guaranteed eternity in the Lord (Romans 6:22; Galatians 5:22-23).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should share the privileges they have enjoyed as sons of God.

2. A SPIRIT-CONTROLLED LIFE

Anyone that is born again should be controlled by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us power over sin (Galatians 5:16); power to serve God (Acts. 1:8); power to witness to our spiritual adoption (Galatians 4:6, 1 Jn. 3:24).

Also, the Holy Spirit helps us to bear fruits unto repentance (Matthew 3:8); guides us into all truth (John 16:13), controls believers’ temperament (Romans 8:4-5; Galatians 5:25), He gives life to our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11); power to rebuke and cast out demons (Acts 13:8-11); influences our choices (Acts 13:2). The Holy Spirit sends help and comforts Christians in times of pains, disappointment, loss, trials, etc. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The teacher should ask the students to mention what has changed about them since they accepted Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

CONCLUSION: Anyone who is born again must be sanctified and controlled by the Holy Spirit.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Mention three things believers can do to be sanctified.
  2. What are the benefits of a spirit-controlled life?

ASSIGNMENT: Write out five specific instructions the Holy Spirit has given you which was different from what you had in mind. (2×5=10 marks).

Instructions For Christian Disciples. AG Sunday School Teachers

Memory Verse: Matthew 10:7-8

As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give (KJV).

Central Truth

The words of Christ offer instructions for daily Christian living.

The Lesson Outline

1. Proclaim the Good News

A. Proclamation to the Jews- Matthew 10:1-16

B. Proclamation to the World- Matthew 28:16-20

2. Be on Your Guard

A. Confident in Times

of Trouble- Matthew 10:17-20

B. Cost of Obedience- Matthew 10:21-25

3. Do Not Be Afraid

A. A Bold Proclamation- Matthew 10:26-28

B. In God’s Care- Matthew 10:29-33

Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Understand Jesus’ instructions on discipleship and grasp what it means to follow them in all circumstances.

2. Be challenged to recognise and accept that Christian discipleship will involve adversity and even persecution.

3. Be encouraged that they can proclaim the gospel boldly.

Introducing the Lesson

Sharing the gospel should not be seen as optional for the Christian. It can be easy to share the way of salvation with someone you love, but it is not always as easy to share the gospel with someone you hardly know or someone who is a stranger.

In this lesson, you will explore how declaring the good news is a part of discipleship, and then be challenged to help others live out that same faith you have come to practice. Such a

life is at the heart of discipleship.

The Holy Scriptures

Matthew 10:1-33

[1]And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

[2]Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

[3]Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

[4]Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

[5]These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:

[6]But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

[7]And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

[8]Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

[9]Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,

[10]Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

[11]And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

[12]And when ye come into an house, salute it.

[13]And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

[14]And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

[15]Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

[16]Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

[17]But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

[18]And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

[19]But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

[20]For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

[21]And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

[22]And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

[23]But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

[24]The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

[25]It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

[26]Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

[27]What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

[28]And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

[29]Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

[30]But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

[31]Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

[32]Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

[33]But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Commentary and Application

1. Proclaim the Good News

A. Proclamation to the Jews– Matthew 10:1-16

In Matthew 10:1-16, Jesus gave His disciples instructions on how to use their authority, as well as the purpose of this authority. Miracles were to be performed for a reason: to draw attention to the kingdom of God, and declare that His kingdom is near (verse 7).

In this way, miracles serve to draw individuals toward the opportunity to become citizens of His kingdom.

The purpose of healing, raising people from the dead, and driving out demons is to redirect a person’s focus toward God. The restored health of the individual who receives the miracle is a marvellous benefit as well. But if the kingdom of God is not clearly proclaimed through the miracle, it has not accomplished its true purpose.

Jesus told the disciples to go to the people of lsrael first (verses 5-8).

He sought to give the Jews the opportunity to inherit all that had been promised to them. It was Jesus’ desire that they would repent of their wicked ways and return to Him as a lost sheep would return to its shepherd. Through the working of miracles by the disciples, they would see the truth about Jesus.

A person must not become prideful when God has done a miracle through his or her life, or use the experience to elevate personal status. Just as the believer freely receives the miracle of salvation solely as a result of God’s power and authority, all additional miraculous acts that occur during the ministry of the gospel are entirely the result of God’s intervention, and all praise and recognition must be given to Him.

Verses 9-15 remind us that hospitality toward strangers and travellers was expected within the Jewish culture. If a traveller entered a town and requested a place to stay and a meal, it was common practice for the host to grant the request.

Jesus reminded the disciples to make use of this custom in their work to spread the message of the kingdom of God (verse 11).

Once the disciple entered the home of the host, the disciple was to share the message of God’s kingdom (verses 12-15). Jesus knew some people would not be receptive to this message, even if miracles were performed, and the disciples should not force their message on their hosts. If the hosts received the message, their lives would be transformed.

They would experience the peace that only comes through a right relationship with God. If the hosts rejected the message, the disciples were to walk away, having done what was required of them. They had no more responsibility. Those who rejected the message had made their choice, and they would face the consequences of that decision

Jesus understood that sharing the message of the kingdom of God within the kingdom of this World was dangerous (verse 16). Jesus’ disciples would be persecuted, and some would give their lives. So Jesus told His disciples to use wisdom as they shared the message of the kingdom of God.

*Questions for Application

Why do you think people are often most effective in sharing their salvation stories with others during the first few years after they are saved?

What open doors of opportunity are there in your world where you can proclaim the power of the kingdom of God?

B. Proclamation to the World–Matthew 28:16-20

Prior to His ascension to the right hand of the Father, Jesus gave the disciples what is known as the Great Commission, in Matthew 28:19-20. Prior to that, in verses 16–18, Jesus reaffirmed the authority that the Father had given to Him. The disciples would need to draw on His authority in the future as the Kingdom advanced.

Jesus was clear concerning what He wanted to see accomplished through the use of the authority that He had granted to His disciples. He didn’t tell them simply to lead people into the Kingdom through salvation. He wanted His disciples to be disciple-makers, that is, to teach them the ways and values of the Kingdom.

Verse 19 reminds us that water baptism, a part of being a disciple, was a sign that a person had become aligned with Christ, believing in Him as Saviour. When believers were baptised, they renounced their old lives.

The consequences of this were not always minor. Those who were baptised were often cut off from their families. Water baptism was a very serious matter!

There would have been no doubt in the person’s mind concerning what they were doing.

Water baptism was to be done in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

This baptismal formula is important because it uniquely distinguishes the followers of Jesus, acknowledging the authority of the Father and recognising the Holy Spirit, who guides and empowers believers as they follow Christ.

This formula, then, affirms one’s belief in the triune God.

A key part of proclaiming the Kingdom involves teaching the new convert how to obey what Jesus commanded (verse 20).

When a person loves God, they will love others. Loving others will compel the believer, then, to offer the message of hope and salvation to all who will listen. Loving God and loving others are the hallmarks of citizenship in the kingdom of God.

Questions for Application

Why must we see salvation as a lifetime of discipleship rather than

a momentary commitment at an

altar?

Why do you think love is such an important component in Kingdom living?

2. Be on Your Guard

*A. Confident in Times of Trouble–Matthew 10:17-20*

Jesus commanded His disciples to be on their guard (Matthew 10:17-18). He was not commanding them to be defensive, but to be prepared to face difficulty.

There was, of course, an easy way out of persecution. They could simply be quiet, blend in with the crowd, and keep the truth to themselves. But this was unacceptable if they were to stay faithful to their Lord.

Jesus assured the disciples that they would not be alone when they faced persecution for their faith. The “Spirit of your Father” (verse 20) would be with them.

This is the only occurrence of this particular phrase in the New Testament. It is a unique way of referencing the Holy Spirit, and commentators note that it reflects Matthew’s tendency to highlight the intimate nature of the relationship between the Father and His children.

Such intimacy surely would be present in these instances. When they needed their Lord the most, the Spirit would speak through them.

Tough times did come to the disciples. Church history teaches that nearly all of them gave their lives for the cause of Christ.

First-century Christians were persecuted by the Jews and faced interrogation, imprisonment, and even death by the Romans. But just as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit was with them and the kingdom of God Continued to expand despite opposition.

Christians today should not be surprised when they face persecution for their faith. Following Christ will result in tough times, so we must not be caught off guard. Recalling that the Holy Spirit is with us during tough times will provide comfort and confidence as we faithfully declare God’s kingdom.

Questions for Application

What difficulties have you faced as a result of your faith in Jesus?

How have you prepared yourself to face opposition in the future?

B. Cost of Obedience– Matthew 10:21-25

The challenge of discipleship might bring problems at home as well as out in the world. The message of God’s kingdom may divide families, causing brothers to turn over their brothers to the authorities (Matthew 10:21). This same betrayal may occur between parents and their children. Jesus stated that the love of evil will supersede the love of family members. Jesus indicated there will be no place to hide. Those who reject God’s kingdom hate the citizens of the Kingdom.

Jesus indicated that some who start on the journey of Kingdom life would change course short of the finish line. Verse 22 implies that some would not endure. ln light of Jesus’ words in verses 21-23, this is not surprising. It is hard to stand firm against evil in the face of persecution. But Jesus offers a marvellous assurance: Those who do endure to the end will be saved.

In verses 24-25, Jesus helped His followers understand why they would be treated in such a manner:

They would suffer, just as He suffered, because the student is not greater than the teacher.

The follower of Christ could not expect to be treated better than Christ himself, who suffered accusations leading to death by those who hated Him.

If a person desired to take part in the ministry of the miraculous, he or she would also have to embrace the consequences that come with such a ministry. Jesus was persecuted for the message of the kingdom of God.

Disciples of Jesus Would, and will, be persecuted for faithfully declaring that message as well.

Although it seems like a contradiction, believers will often go to areas of the world that have yet to hear the gospel, despite certain persecution.

As the Spirit moves in the hearts of peôple, they develop boldness to trust God and overcome fear.

Questions for Application

Why do you think some parts of the world suffer worse persecution than other parts?

What can we, as people who suffer less than many, learn from the suffering and response of others ?

How do you think believers in safer countries today would respond in the face of

persecution?

3. Do Not Be Afraid

*A. A Bold Proclamation– Matthew 10:26-28*

Jesus’ command not to be afraid in the face of persecution goes against all human instincts.

Jesus instructed the disciples to demonstrate their courage by being bold in their proclamation of the

Kingdom.

Up until that point, the proclamation of the Kingdom had been somewhat limited.

Much of what Jesus had taught, He had taught to His closest followers, His disciples.

But now it was time for them to move forward and proclaim these words to the world without restraint, in broad daylight and loudly from the roof tops (Matthew 10:26-27).

The life of Jesus was a demonstration of the fact that God loves the whole world. But the world would only come to know this if the truths of God, taught throughout the ministry of His Son, were shared with the world.

Verse 28 is interesting. Fear can prevent people from doing the right thing.

The enemy of the Kingdom seeks to intimidate God’s people with threats that they may even lose their lives. Jesus turned this around by citing an important biblical principle.

The people of God should neither fear men nor the enemy of their souls.

The worst that might happen is the loss of life. But Scripture calls us to instead fear God (cf., 2 Corinthians 7:1).

That is, we acknowledge God as Creator and Lord, and revere Him for the power and authority He holds over us, today for all eternity.

How unwise it would be to focus on earthly enemies rather

than our Almighty God.

Questions for Application

How do you react to the thought that you might be required to suffer greatly for your faith?

Why can even a committed Christian struggle to follow Christ consistently?

B. In God’s Care– Matthew 10:29-33

Jesus reassured the disciples that God cared for them by reminding them that He cares for every part of His creation, even that which seems insignificant (Matthew 10:29-30).

Likewise, God cares so intimately that He knows the number of hairs on a person’s head-a seemingly trivial point, and one that is difficult to ascertain.

If God is concerned about birds and hair counts surely the believer can have confidence in His care for them.

Believers need not live in fear because they know that God loves them and values their lives (verse 31).

God’s care does not guarantee a life without trial, but a life of joy and peace, even, in times of trouble.

Jesus then gave an important reminder: Believers would face real temptations to deny that they are His followers.

Those who are willing to

acknowledge themselves as followers of Christ will be acknowledged to the Father as His followers (verse 32).

But those who deny Him will also be denied before the Father (verse 33). This does not mean that we forfeit salvation if we stumble in faith, for Peter was restored after denying Christ three times (see Luke 22:54-62; John 21:7-19).

Rather, it reminds us of a stark choice that we must make.

Will we join in solidarity to our Lord, or will we divide our allegiance between the Lord and men, depending upon the situation? Let us, as His disciples, choose to stand boldly for Christ.

*Questions for Application*

How can a believer overcome fear when faced with opposition?

What are some ways God has shown His care for you?

Call to Discipleship

God desires all people to enter the kingdom of God, for He does not wish for any to perish (2 Peter 3:8-10).

Yet in our role in reaching them, we must also keep two things in mind.

First, God has called us to be disciples.

We must ourselves be lifelong learners, growing in relationship to Christ.

This equips us to be faithful to Christ. Second, we must be committed to the lifelong task of discipleship, helping people find Christ.

We need to invest time and resources to help them become faithful followers of Christ in a difficult world.

Ministry in Action

Develop a testimony script of your salvation or another miracle that you have experienced in your life, to help you better share your testimony when the opportunity arises.

Look for opportunities this week to share Christ with someone.

Pray that God will empower you to stand strong and bold for Him when you are tempted to avoid trouble by concealing your relationship with Christ.

Common Network Analysis Tool For Cyber Security Analysts

A SOC relies on a supporting infrastructure of tools and systems that provide the following services:

  • Network mapping
  • Network monitoring
  • Vulnerability detection
  • Penetration testing
  • Data collection
  • Threat and anomaly detection
  • Data aggregation and correlation

One tool that is used by analysts in a SOC is Security Onion.

Security Onion is intended to support SOC analysts with a suite of tools for network security monitoring, including intrusion detection, network security monitoring, and log management. The Security Onion distribution is based on the Ubuntu Linux operating system and contains several useful security tools that are designed to provide four core network security-monitoring functions as follows:

  • Full packet capture
  • Network-based and host-based intrusion detection sensors
  • Security analysis tools
  • Log management

The Enterprise Log Search and Archive (ELSA) version of Security Onion is composed of the following tools:

#1 ELSA

ELSA is a centralized syslog framework that is built on Syslog-NG, MySQL, and Sphinx full-text search. It provides a fully asynchronous web-based query interface that normalizes logs and makes searching billions of them for arbitrary strings as easy as searching the web. It also includes tools for assigning permissions for viewing the logs, email-based alerts, scheduled queries, and graphing.

#2 Snort

An open source, rules-driven network intrusion detection system (NIDS) and network intrusion prevention system (NIPS) developed by Cisco (Sourcefire). It performs real-time threat detection and generates alerts when threats are detected. The NIPS inline mode is not supported within Security Onion.

#3 Suricata

A script-driven NIDS and NIPS threat detection engine for analyzing traffic and generating alerts. NIPS inline mode is not supported within Security Onion.

#4 Zeek (Bro)

A packet recorder and protocol parsing engine that is commonly used to analyze network traffic to detect behavioral anomalies.

#5 Traffic logging

Traffic captured by means of SPAN, a TAP port, or a packet broker. Traffic logging generates comprehensive, protocol-specific traffic logs for more than 35 network protocols and application layer analyzers, including HTTP, DNS FTP, and SMTP.

#6 Automated analysis

Traffic analysis that uses Bro scripts.

#7 File extraction

Extracts and reassembles various file types directly off the wire.

#8 Wazuh (OSSEC)

Host-based intrusion detection system (HIDS) that replaced OSSEC and is used to monitor and defend Security Onion. Wazuh offers a lightweight monitoring agent that can be installed on network host devices and is supported on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris platforms.

#9 Netsniff-ng

Captures network traffic via SPAN, a TAP port, or packet broker in the form of PCAP files.

#10 Sysmon

Windows system service to monitor event log and system activity.

#11 Syslog-ng

An enhanced BSD log daemon that can receive logs and collect inputs from a wide range of sources.

Network analyst tools

Provide packet capture and network traffic IP flow analytics capabilities that can be used to find anomalous network activity. The following popular network analyst tools are included within Security Onion:

#1 Wireshark

 Network protocol analyzer

#2 Sguil

Sguil (pronounced “sgweel”) is built by network security analysts for network security analysts. Sguil’s main component is an intuitive GUI that provides access to real-time events, session data, and raw packet captures. Sguil facilitates the practice of Network Security Monitoring and event driven analysis.

#3 Squert

Squert is a web application that is used to query and view event data that is stored in a Sguil database (typically IDS alert data). Squert is a visual tool that attempts to provide additional context to events by using metadata, time series representations and weighted and logically grouped result sets.

#4 NetworkMiner

Performs network traffic analysis for parsing PCAP files and extracting artifacts

#5 CyberChef

Web-based application for data manipulation

#6 CapME

Helps with analyzing PCAP transcripts and downloading captured PCAP files

The preceding tools are included in Security Onion to aid the SOC analyst in viewing network telemetry data and analyzing that data to determine if a network intrusion has occurred. For example, IDS alerts are generated from Snort or Suricata. A SOC analyst could use ELSA to query log data from other sources to validate alert messages that are from Snort. Sguil is a real-time event- and session-monitoring tool that displays data for a SOC analyst to interpret. These types of tools are used by security analysts to perform their jobs.

A newer release of Security Onion is called the Elastic Stack (ELK) version. It includes the following tools:

  • Elasticsearch: Ingest and index logs, large scalable search engine based on Apache Lucene
  • Logstash: Data ingestion engine, parsing, and format logs
  • Kibana: Web dashboard that offers visualizations of ingested log data and data exploration. (Kibana and Squert can pivot to CapMe to retrieve full packet captures.)
  • TheHIVE: Security incident response platform and case management system integrated with Malware Information Sharing Platform (MISP)
  • Elastic Beats: Lightweight data shipper server agent that sends specific types of operational data to Logstash and Elasticsearch
  • Curator: Manage indices through scheduled maintenance
  • ElastAlert: Query Elasticsearch and alert on user-defined anomalous behavior or other interesting bits of information
  • FreqServer: Detect DGAs and find random filenames, script names, process names, service names, workstation names, TLS certificate and issuer subjects, and so on.
  • DomainStats: Conducts whois lookups and provides info about a domain by providing additional context, such as creation time, age, reputation.

The following figure shows the relationship between the Security Onion 2 Elastic Stack components.

You might use other tools, besides Security Onion, such as the following:

  • Cisco Secure Network Analytics (formerly Stealthwatch): Displays distinct views of the IP flows traversing network devices that are configured to send NetFlow data to Cisco Secure Network Analytics. Cisco Secure Network Analytics uses NetFlow, IPFIX, and other types of network telemetry data to detect a wide range of threats such as advanced persistent threats (APT)s, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, zero-day malware, and insider threats. Cisco Secure Network Analytics applies various behavior and policy-based algorithms to alarm SOC analysts about suspicious behavior on the network.
  • Cisco Secure Malware Analytics (formerly Threat Grid): A cloud-based malware analysis and threat intelligence sandbox solution. A SOC analyst can submit malware samples for analysis during an investigation. Secure Malware Analytics uses various static and dynamic analysis engines to dissect file behaviors to determine whether a file might be malicious. Cisco Secure Malware Analytics will search and correlate data elements of a single malware sample against millions of samples collected and sourced from around the world providing a global view of malware attacks and its association. Cisco Secure Malware Analytics is included as an integrated component of many Cisco Secure products.
  • Cisco SecureX platform: Connects the Cisco integrated security portfolio with the organization’s entire security infrastructure. The result is a consistent experience that unifies visibility and identifies unknown threats. It also enables automated workflows to strengthen security across the network, endpoint, cloud, and applications. Cisco SecureX is an open, cloud-native platform that is included with many Cisco Secure products. It provides a comprehensive user experience, aligns with products from more than 175 security technology providers, and offers more than 300 product-to-product integrations.
  • Penetration testing tools: The purpose of penetration testing is to actually exploit weaknesses. A penetration test simulates the actions of an attacker who aims to breach the information security of the organization. Using many tools and techniques, the penetration tester (ethical hacker) attempts to exploit critical systems and gain access to sensitive data. A vulnerability assessment is the process that looks for known vulnerabilities in the information systems and reports potential exposures. Penetration testing and vulnerability assessment are often incorrectly used interchangeably, which has created confusion for many enterprises.
  • Most organizations usually start with a vulnerability assessment, and act on its results to either eliminate those weaknesses or reduce them to an acceptable level of risk, and then perform a penetration test if they are confident in their improved security posture. Kali Linux contains many penetration testing tools from various niches of the security and forensics fields, tools such as Metasploit Framework, Armitage, and Social Engineer Toolkit (SET). The following figure shows an example of using Armitage to exploit the Apache Struts vulnerability to open a reverse connection to the vulnerable Apache server (192.168.1.107).

In the following figure, the whoami command is issued after the reverse connection is established.

Security Information and Event Management

The primary purpose of a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) in security operations is to collect and correlate logs to events that indicate malicious or suspicious actions in the network environment.

SIEM systems help SOC analysts by collecting all relevant security data into one place, correlating the data, alerting SOC analysts about anomalies, and enriching the data. Without SIEM systems, a security operations team would not be able to monitor hundreds, thousands, or millions of assets. A SIEM automates the collection, indexing, and alerting of data that is critical to SOC operations.

Although a SIEM is excellent for ingesting, processing, and storing large volumes of data, they fall short when the data must be interpreted in the context of the network environment. While some response actions can and should be automated, humans still need to interpret, analyze, and decide how a specific set of events impacts the environment.

Splunk Enterprise is a popular commercial SIEM product that offers several features including search, indexing, alters, pivot, reports, and data modeling.

Splunk Enterprise, with artificial intelligence and machine-learning capabilities, helps SOC analysts uncover the actionable insights from all the data, regardless of the format. The Splunk Enterprise environment can be customized to fit the specific needs of the organization by the use of apps.

An app is a collection of configurations, knowledge objects, views, and dashboards that run on the Splunk platform. Certain Cisco products support certain Splunk apps.
