Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Understand Jesus’ instructions on discipleship and grasp what it means to follow them in all circumstances.

2. Be challenged to recognise and accept that Christian discipleship will involve adversity and even persecution.

3. Be encouraged that they can proclaim the gospel boldly.

Introducing the Lesson

Sharing the gospel should not be seen as optional for the Christian. It can be easy to share the way of salvation with someone you love, but it is not always as easy to share the gospel with someone you hardly know or someone who is a stranger.

In this lesson, you will explore how declaring the good news is a part of discipleship, and then be challenged to help others live out that same faith you have come to practice. Such a

life is at the heart of discipleship.

The Holy Scriptures

Matthew 10:1-33

[1]And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

[2]Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

[3]Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

[4]Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

[5]These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:

[6]But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

[7]And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

[8]Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

[9]Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,

[10]Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

[11]And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

[12]And when ye come into an house, salute it.

[13]And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

[14]And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

[15]Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

[16]Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

[17]But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

[18]And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

[19]But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

[20]For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

[21]And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

[22]And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

[23]But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

[24]The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

[25]It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

[26]Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

[27]What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

[28]And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

[29]Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

[30]But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

[31]Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

[32]Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

[33]But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Commentary and Application

1. Proclaim the Good News

A. Proclamation to the Jews– Matthew 10:1-16

In Matthew 10:1-16, Jesus gave His disciples instructions on how to use their authority, as well as the purpose of this authority. Miracles were to be performed for a reason: to draw attention to the kingdom of God, and declare that His kingdom is near (verse 7).

In this way, miracles serve to draw individuals toward the opportunity to become citizens of His kingdom.

The purpose of healing, raising people from the dead, and driving out demons is to redirect a person’s focus toward God. The restored health of the individual who receives the miracle is a marvellous benefit as well. But if the kingdom of God is not clearly proclaimed through the miracle, it has not accomplished its true purpose.

Jesus told the disciples to go to the people of lsrael first (verses 5-8).

He sought to give the Jews the opportunity to inherit all that had been promised to them. It was Jesus’ desire that they would repent of their wicked ways and return to Him as a lost sheep would return to its shepherd. Through the working of miracles by the disciples, they would see the truth about Jesus.

A person must not become prideful when God has done a miracle through his or her life, or use the experience to elevate personal status. Just as the believer freely receives the miracle of salvation solely as a result of God’s power and authority, all additional miraculous acts that occur during the ministry of the gospel are entirely the result of God’s intervention, and all praise and recognition must be given to Him.

Verses 9-15 remind us that hospitality toward strangers and travellers was expected within the Jewish culture. If a traveller entered a town and requested a place to stay and a meal, it was common practice for the host to grant the request.

Jesus reminded the disciples to make use of this custom in their work to spread the message of the kingdom of God (verse 11).

Once the disciple entered the home of the host, the disciple was to share the message of God’s kingdom (verses 12-15). Jesus knew some people would not be receptive to this message, even if miracles were performed, and the disciples should not force their message on their hosts. If the hosts received the message, their lives would be transformed.

They would experience the peace that only comes through a right relationship with God. If the hosts rejected the message, the disciples were to walk away, having done what was required of them. They had no more responsibility. Those who rejected the message had made their choice, and they would face the consequences of that decision

Jesus understood that sharing the message of the kingdom of God within the kingdom of this World was dangerous (verse 16). Jesus’ disciples would be persecuted, and some would give their lives. So Jesus told His disciples to use wisdom as they shared the message of the kingdom of God.

*Questions for Application

Why do you think people are often most effective in sharing their salvation stories with others during the first few years after they are saved?

What open doors of opportunity are there in your world where you can proclaim the power of the kingdom of God?

B. Proclamation to the World–Matthew 28:16-20

Prior to His ascension to the right hand of the Father, Jesus gave the disciples what is known as the Great Commission, in Matthew 28:19-20. Prior to that, in verses 16–18, Jesus reaffirmed the authority that the Father had given to Him. The disciples would need to draw on His authority in the future as the Kingdom advanced.

Jesus was clear concerning what He wanted to see accomplished through the use of the authority that He had granted to His disciples. He didn’t tell them simply to lead people into the Kingdom through salvation. He wanted His disciples to be disciple-makers, that is, to teach them the ways and values of the Kingdom.

Verse 19 reminds us that water baptism, a part of being a disciple, was a sign that a person had become aligned with Christ, believing in Him as Saviour. When believers were baptised, they renounced their old lives.

The consequences of this were not always minor. Those who were baptised were often cut off from their families. Water baptism was a very serious matter!

There would have been no doubt in the person’s mind concerning what they were doing.

Water baptism was to be done in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

This baptismal formula is important because it uniquely distinguishes the followers of Jesus, acknowledging the authority of the Father and recognising the Holy Spirit, who guides and empowers believers as they follow Christ.

This formula, then, affirms one’s belief in the triune God.

A key part of proclaiming the Kingdom involves teaching the new convert how to obey what Jesus commanded (verse 20).

When a person loves God, they will love others. Loving others will compel the believer, then, to offer the message of hope and salvation to all who will listen. Loving God and loving others are the hallmarks of citizenship in the kingdom of God.

Questions for Application

Why must we see salvation as a lifetime of discipleship rather than

a momentary commitment at an

altar?

Why do you think love is such an important component in Kingdom living?

2. Be on Your Guard

*A. Confident in Times of Trouble–Matthew 10:17-20*

Jesus commanded His disciples to be on their guard (Matthew 10:17-18). He was not commanding them to be defensive, but to be prepared to face difficulty.

There was, of course, an easy way out of persecution. They could simply be quiet, blend in with the crowd, and keep the truth to themselves. But this was unacceptable if they were to stay faithful to their Lord.

Jesus assured the disciples that they would not be alone when they faced persecution for their faith. The “Spirit of your Father” (verse 20) would be with them.

This is the only occurrence of this particular phrase in the New Testament. It is a unique way of referencing the Holy Spirit, and commentators note that it reflects Matthew’s tendency to highlight the intimate nature of the relationship between the Father and His children.

Such intimacy surely would be present in these instances. When they needed their Lord the most, the Spirit would speak through them.

Tough times did come to the disciples. Church history teaches that nearly all of them gave their lives for the cause of Christ.

First-century Christians were persecuted by the Jews and faced interrogation, imprisonment, and even death by the Romans. But just as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit was with them and the kingdom of God Continued to expand despite opposition.

Christians today should not be surprised when they face persecution for their faith. Following Christ will result in tough times, so we must not be caught off guard. Recalling that the Holy Spirit is with us during tough times will provide comfort and confidence as we faithfully declare God’s kingdom.

Questions for Application

What difficulties have you faced as a result of your faith in Jesus?

How have you prepared yourself to face opposition in the future?

B. Cost of Obedience– Matthew 10:21-25

The challenge of discipleship might bring problems at home as well as out in the world. The message of God’s kingdom may divide families, causing brothers to turn over their brothers to the authorities (Matthew 10:21). This same betrayal may occur between parents and their children. Jesus stated that the love of evil will supersede the love of family members. Jesus indicated there will be no place to hide. Those who reject God’s kingdom hate the citizens of the Kingdom.

Jesus indicated that some who start on the journey of Kingdom life would change course short of the finish line. Verse 22 implies that some would not endure. ln light of Jesus’ words in verses 21-23, this is not surprising. It is hard to stand firm against evil in the face of persecution. But Jesus offers a marvellous assurance: Those who do endure to the end will be saved.

In verses 24-25, Jesus helped His followers understand why they would be treated in such a manner:

They would suffer, just as He suffered, because the student is not greater than the teacher.

The follower of Christ could not expect to be treated better than Christ himself, who suffered accusations leading to death by those who hated Him.

If a person desired to take part in the ministry of the miraculous, he or she would also have to embrace the consequences that come with such a ministry. Jesus was persecuted for the message of the kingdom of God.

Disciples of Jesus Would, and will, be persecuted for faithfully declaring that message as well.

Although it seems like a contradiction, believers will often go to areas of the world that have yet to hear the gospel, despite certain persecution.

As the Spirit moves in the hearts of peôple, they develop boldness to trust God and overcome fear.

Questions for Application

Why do you think some parts of the world suffer worse persecution than other parts?

What can we, as people who suffer less than many, learn from the suffering and response of others ?

How do you think believers in safer countries today would respond in the face of

persecution?

3. Do Not Be Afraid

*A. A Bold Proclamation– Matthew 10:26-28*

Jesus’ command not to be afraid in the face of persecution goes against all human instincts.

Jesus instructed the disciples to demonstrate their courage by being bold in their proclamation of the

Kingdom.

Up until that point, the proclamation of the Kingdom had been somewhat limited.

Much of what Jesus had taught, He had taught to His closest followers, His disciples.

But now it was time for them to move forward and proclaim these words to the world without restraint, in broad daylight and loudly from the roof tops (Matthew 10:26-27).

The life of Jesus was a demonstration of the fact that God loves the whole world. But the world would only come to know this if the truths of God, taught throughout the ministry of His Son, were shared with the world.

Verse 28 is interesting. Fear can prevent people from doing the right thing.

The enemy of the Kingdom seeks to intimidate God’s people with threats that they may even lose their lives. Jesus turned this around by citing an important biblical principle.

The people of God should neither fear men nor the enemy of their souls.

The worst that might happen is the loss of life. But Scripture calls us to instead fear God (cf., 2 Corinthians 7:1).

That is, we acknowledge God as Creator and Lord, and revere Him for the power and authority He holds over us, today for all eternity.

How unwise it would be to focus on earthly enemies rather

than our Almighty God.

Questions for Application

How do you react to the thought that you might be required to suffer greatly for your faith?

Why can even a committed Christian struggle to follow Christ consistently?

B. In God’s Care– Matthew 10:29-33

Jesus reassured the disciples that God cared for them by reminding them that He cares for every part of His creation, even that which seems insignificant (Matthew 10:29-30).

Likewise, God cares so intimately that He knows the number of hairs on a person’s head-a seemingly trivial point, and one that is difficult to ascertain.

If God is concerned about birds and hair counts surely the believer can have confidence in His care for them.

Believers need not live in fear because they know that God loves them and values their lives (verse 31).

God’s care does not guarantee a life without trial, but a life of joy and peace, even, in times of trouble.

Jesus then gave an important reminder: Believers would face real temptations to deny that they are His followers.

Those who are willing to

acknowledge themselves as followers of Christ will be acknowledged to the Father as His followers (verse 32).

But those who deny Him will also be denied before the Father (verse 33). This does not mean that we forfeit salvation if we stumble in faith, for Peter was restored after denying Christ three times (see Luke 22:54-62; John 21:7-19).

Rather, it reminds us of a stark choice that we must make.

Will we join in solidarity to our Lord, or will we divide our allegiance between the Lord and men, depending upon the situation? Let us, as His disciples, choose to stand boldly for Christ.

*Questions for Application*

How can a believer overcome fear when faced with opposition?

What are some ways God has shown His care for you?

Call to Discipleship

God desires all people to enter the kingdom of God, for He does not wish for any to perish (2 Peter 3:8-10).

Yet in our role in reaching them, we must also keep two things in mind.

First, God has called us to be disciples.

We must ourselves be lifelong learners, growing in relationship to Christ.

This equips us to be faithful to Christ. Second, we must be committed to the lifelong task of discipleship, helping people find Christ.

We need to invest time and resources to help them become faithful followers of Christ in a difficult world.

Ministry in Action

Develop a testimony script of your salvation or another miracle that you have experienced in your life, to help you better share your testimony when the opportunity arises.

Look for opportunities this week to share Christ with someone.

Pray that God will empower you to stand strong and bold for Him when you are tempted to avoid trouble by concealing your relationship with Christ.

Common Network Analysis Tool For Cyber Security Analysts

Common Network Analysis Tool For Cyber Security Analysts

A SOC relies on a supporting infrastructure of tools and systems that provide the following services:

  • Network mapping
  • Network monitoring
  • Vulnerability detection
  • Penetration testing
  • Data collection
  • Threat and anomaly detection
  • Data aggregation and correlation

One tool that is used by analysts in a SOC is Security Onion.

Security Onion is intended to support SOC analysts with a suite of tools for network security monitoring, including intrusion detection, network security monitoring, and log management. The Security Onion distribution is based on the Ubuntu Linux operating system and contains several useful security tools that are designed to provide four core network security-monitoring functions as follows:

  • Full packet capture
  • Network-based and host-based intrusion detection sensors
  • Security analysis tools
  • Log management

The Enterprise Log Search and Archive (ELSA) version of Security Onion is composed of the following tools:

#1 ELSA

ELSA is a centralized syslog framework that is built on Syslog-NG, MySQL, and Sphinx full-text search. It provides a fully asynchronous web-based query interface that normalizes logs and makes searching billions of them for arbitrary strings as easy as searching the web. It also includes tools for assigning permissions for viewing the logs, email-based alerts, scheduled queries, and graphing.

#2 Snort

An open source, rules-driven network intrusion detection system (NIDS) and network intrusion prevention system (NIPS) developed by Cisco (Sourcefire). It performs real-time threat detection and generates alerts when threats are detected. The NIPS inline mode is not supported within Security Onion.

#3 Suricata

A script-driven NIDS and NIPS threat detection engine for analyzing traffic and generating alerts. NIPS inline mode is not supported within Security Onion.

#4 Zeek (Bro)

A packet recorder and protocol parsing engine that is commonly used to analyze network traffic to detect behavioral anomalies.

#5 Traffic logging

Traffic captured by means of SPAN, a TAP port, or a packet broker. Traffic logging generates comprehensive, protocol-specific traffic logs for more than 35 network protocols and application layer analyzers, including HTTP, DNS FTP, and SMTP.

#6 Automated analysis

Traffic analysis that uses Bro scripts.

#7 File extraction

Extracts and reassembles various file types directly off the wire.

#8 Wazuh (OSSEC)

Host-based intrusion detection system (HIDS) that replaced OSSEC and is used to monitor and defend Security Onion. Wazuh offers a lightweight monitoring agent that can be installed on network host devices and is supported on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris platforms.

#9 Netsniff-ng

Captures network traffic via SPAN, a TAP port, or packet broker in the form of PCAP files.

#10 Sysmon

Windows system service to monitor event log and system activity.

#11 Syslog-ng

An enhanced BSD log daemon that can receive logs and collect inputs from a wide range of sources.

Network analyst tools

Provide packet capture and network traffic IP flow analytics capabilities that can be used to find anomalous network activity. The following popular network analyst tools are included within Security Onion:

#1 Wireshark

 Network protocol analyzer

#2 Sguil

Sguil (pronounced “sgweel”) is built by network security analysts for network security analysts. Sguil’s main component is an intuitive GUI that provides access to real-time events, session data, and raw packet captures. Sguil facilitates the practice of Network Security Monitoring and event driven analysis.

#3 Squert

Squert is a web application that is used to query and view event data that is stored in a Sguil database (typically IDS alert data). Squert is a visual tool that attempts to provide additional context to events by using metadata, time series representations and weighted and logically grouped result sets.

#4 NetworkMiner

Performs network traffic analysis for parsing PCAP files and extracting artifacts

#5 CyberChef

Web-based application for data manipulation

#6 CapME

Helps with analyzing PCAP transcripts and downloading captured PCAP files

The preceding tools are included in Security Onion to aid the SOC analyst in viewing network telemetry data and analyzing that data to determine if a network intrusion has occurred. For example, IDS alerts are generated from Snort or Suricata. A SOC analyst could use ELSA to query log data from other sources to validate alert messages that are from Snort. Sguil is a real-time event- and session-monitoring tool that displays data for a SOC analyst to interpret. These types of tools are used by security analysts to perform their jobs.

A newer release of Security Onion is called the Elastic Stack (ELK) version. It includes the following tools:

  • Elasticsearch: Ingest and index logs, large scalable search engine based on Apache Lucene
  • Logstash: Data ingestion engine, parsing, and format logs
  • Kibana: Web dashboard that offers visualizations of ingested log data and data exploration. (Kibana and Squert can pivot to CapMe to retrieve full packet captures.)
  • TheHIVE: Security incident response platform and case management system integrated with Malware Information Sharing Platform (MISP)
  • Elastic Beats: Lightweight data shipper server agent that sends specific types of operational data to Logstash and Elasticsearch
  • Curator: Manage indices through scheduled maintenance
  • ElastAlert: Query Elasticsearch and alert on user-defined anomalous behavior or other interesting bits of information
  • FreqServer: Detect DGAs and find random filenames, script names, process names, service names, workstation names, TLS certificate and issuer subjects, and so on.
  • DomainStats: Conducts whois lookups and provides info about a domain by providing additional context, such as creation time, age, reputation.

The following figure shows the relationship between the Security Onion 2 Elastic Stack components.

You might use other tools, besides Security Onion, such as the following:

  • Cisco Secure Network Analytics (formerly Stealthwatch): Displays distinct views of the IP flows traversing network devices that are configured to send NetFlow data to Cisco Secure Network Analytics. Cisco Secure Network Analytics uses NetFlow, IPFIX, and other types of network telemetry data to detect a wide range of threats such as advanced persistent threats (APT)s, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, zero-day malware, and insider threats. Cisco Secure Network Analytics applies various behavior and policy-based algorithms to alarm SOC analysts about suspicious behavior on the network.
  • Cisco Secure Malware Analytics (formerly Threat Grid): A cloud-based malware analysis and threat intelligence sandbox solution. A SOC analyst can submit malware samples for analysis during an investigation. Secure Malware Analytics uses various static and dynamic analysis engines to dissect file behaviors to determine whether a file might be malicious. Cisco Secure Malware Analytics will search and correlate data elements of a single malware sample against millions of samples collected and sourced from around the world providing a global view of malware attacks and its association. Cisco Secure Malware Analytics is included as an integrated component of many Cisco Secure products.
  • Cisco SecureX platform: Connects the Cisco integrated security portfolio with the organization’s entire security infrastructure. The result is a consistent experience that unifies visibility and identifies unknown threats. It also enables automated workflows to strengthen security across the network, endpoint, cloud, and applications. Cisco SecureX is an open, cloud-native platform that is included with many Cisco Secure products. It provides a comprehensive user experience, aligns with products from more than 175 security technology providers, and offers more than 300 product-to-product integrations.
  • Penetration testing tools: The purpose of penetration testing is to actually exploit weaknesses. A penetration test simulates the actions of an attacker who aims to breach the information security of the organization. Using many tools and techniques, the penetration tester (ethical hacker) attempts to exploit critical systems and gain access to sensitive data. A vulnerability assessment is the process that looks for known vulnerabilities in the information systems and reports potential exposures. Penetration testing and vulnerability assessment are often incorrectly used interchangeably, which has created confusion for many enterprises.
  • Most organizations usually start with a vulnerability assessment, and act on its results to either eliminate those weaknesses or reduce them to an acceptable level of risk, and then perform a penetration test if they are confident in their improved security posture. Kali Linux contains many penetration testing tools from various niches of the security and forensics fields, tools such as Metasploit Framework, Armitage, and Social Engineer Toolkit (SET). The following figure shows an example of using Armitage to exploit the Apache Struts vulnerability to open a reverse connection to the vulnerable Apache server (192.168.1.107).

In the following figure, the whoami command is issued after the reverse connection is established.

Security Information and Event Management

The primary purpose of a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) in security operations is to collect and correlate logs to events that indicate malicious or suspicious actions in the network environment.

SIEM systems help SOC analysts by collecting all relevant security data into one place, correlating the data, alerting SOC analysts about anomalies, and enriching the data. Without SIEM systems, a security operations team would not be able to monitor hundreds, thousands, or millions of assets. A SIEM automates the collection, indexing, and alerting of data that is critical to SOC operations.

Although a SIEM is excellent for ingesting, processing, and storing large volumes of data, they fall short when the data must be interpreted in the context of the network environment. While some response actions can and should be automated, humans still need to interpret, analyze, and decide how a specific set of events impacts the environment.

Splunk Enterprise is a popular commercial SIEM product that offers several features including search, indexing, alters, pivot, reports, and data modeling.

Splunk Enterprise, with artificial intelligence and machine-learning capabilities, helps SOC analysts uncover the actionable insights from all the data, regardless of the format. The Splunk Enterprise environment can be customized to fit the specific needs of the organization by the use of apps.

An app is a collection of configurations, knowledge objects, views, and dashboards that run on the Splunk platform. Certain Cisco products support certain Splunk apps.

Choose Your Entertainment Wisely. AG Teen Sunday School Manual

TEXT: Prov 4:23; 22:24-25; Matt 6:22-23; 15:18-19; 1 Cor 10:31; 15:33

Entertainment is a central focus of our society. Many people get their political opinions, fashion advice, and even religious ideas from people who entertain us. With entertainment playing such important role in the society, the teens in your class are probably well aware of the views of their favourite movie stars, musicians, and sports icons. Though all of those views may not be wrong or bad, many of those in the entertainment industry have ungodly ideas and standards that spill over into the entertainment they sell.

Entertainment is more than just entertaining; it often has an agenda it is trying to communicate, which often is in opposition to Christian morals and ethics. The media has opened many doors to immorality by subtly feeding us tiny tolerable bites at a time until we have a “hook” in our mouths. Your teenagers may be aware of many of the negative messages the media endorses.

But when they are bombarded with these terrible ideas continually, eventually they may begin to accept things the Scripture defines as UNACCEPTABLE. This study will equip you to help your students recognize and reject the indoctrination their entertainment is dishing out.

The Basic Message: Explain to students…

• WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

Your entertainment choices matter to God.

• WHY DOES IT MATTER?

The things you choose for entertainment will affect the way you look at God, others, and even your own life.

• HOW DO I LIVE IT?

Examine the standards you use to choose your entertainment, and reject any entertainment that isn’t plea sing to God.

Activity Option: OKAY OR NOT

Read out the following items, and give students time to think about whether or not each of these items is acceptable:

• Listening to a CD that encourages dancing and close physical contact with members of the opposite sex.

• Playing a video game that contains magical creature and the casting of spells.

• Reading a book that contains descriptions of explicit sexual acts.

Guide: Explain that entertainment might seem harmless because it is generally used to fill time or escape from reality. But it can contain messages that can affect even the strongest Christians. That is why we must choose our entertainment carefully, with God’s standards in mind.

Study Overview: Explain that today’s study considers…

• How everything that we do matters to God.

• How our choices of entertainment can and will affect our relationships with friends and with God

• Ways to guard ourselves against bad choices.

Inform and Discuss

a). Entertainment affects our attitudes and values

1. Discuss the following questions:

• Have you ever read a book or watched a movie where someone who would be evil according to the Bible is the “good guy” ?

• How might this kind of entertainment cause confusion about right and wrong?

Guide: Explain that entertaining media can sometimes send a confusing message. Sometimes this message is confusing for pure entertainment value; sometimes it is because the author wants you to rethink your accepted ideas; and sometimes it is because the author wants to convince you of something.

2. Do you think your entertainment can influence your ideas or opinions? Why?

3. Read or have a volunteer read Matt 6:22-23. What do you think the verse means when it says, “The eye is the lamp of the body”? [Hint What you see influences you. Your eyes help you discover the world around you as well as direct you based on the information you see. Therefore, the eye is one of the major senses used for “taking in” the world around you.

Note: If you consistently take in the evil things of the world, you will be filling yourself with the evil and it will eventually affect your decisions negatively; while taking in positive things has the opposite effect.

4. Read or have a volunteer read Prov 4:23. What are some ways we can guard our hearts when it comes to entertainment? [Guide: Explain that we have the power to choose the entertainment in which we engage. Here are a few basic questions that should be asked when choosing entertainment:

• Is this appropriate entertainment? [Hint: Entertainment shouldn’t cause you to see, hear, or do things that the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and your conscience say you shouldn’t.

• Will it affect me positively or negatively? [Hint: Entertainment shouldn’t have an effect on you that influences you to do inappropriate things.

• What else could I be doing? [Hint: There are always choices of entertainment, so you should always Consider if there is another form that would be better for you.

b). Our entertainment choices will impact others

1. Read or have a volunteer read Matt 15:18-19. How do you think our entertainment choices can influence others? [Hint: The negative or positive theme you take in will eventually come out of you and affect those around you.]

2. Read or have volunteers read 1Cor 15:33; Prov 22:23-24. How do you think poor entertainment choices affect your Christian witness? [Hint: When we begin to “spill out” the ungodly things that poor entertainment choices have put into our hearts, our Christianity is often called into question. It can equally cause some people to question whether or not they want anything to do with Christianity.]

Note: People often make decisions about Christianity and God based on our actions. This is why we need to do everything we can to not misrepresent God and the faith, even in our choices of entertainment.

c). Choose entertainment that pleases God

1. Read or have a volunteer read Phil 4:8. How should our entertainment choices be affected by this verse? [Hint: We should choose those entertainments that contain the characteristics of what we want to become.]

2. Read or have a volunteer read 1 Cor 10:31. What great guide is provided in this verse? [Hint: By making wise decisions in picking entertainment that fills you with godly words, ideas, and character, entertainment can be done to glorify God.]

Involve Them: ENTERTAINMENT EXPLORATION

Bring to class a sales paper from store that contains movie, music, and/or video game advertisements. Read appropriate titles and the rating. Then, if they think that particular movie, CD, or game is acceptable entertainment the class is familiar with a given title, allow them to discuss whether or not for a Christian.

Teacher Hint: Be careful to not allow students to be condescending to one another based on what entertainment they accept or don’t accept. Try to keep the discussion focused on the specific movies or games, not on people who endorse or condemn them.

Guide: Just because someone is an incredible actress, sports star, or writer doesn’t mean they’re qualified to tell you how to live your life God gave us His Word and our conscience to help us decide what is best for us, and He expects us to use both. The next time you are making an entertainment decision, try to think less of who the leading actor is; instead think more about the message the story is sending to your heart.

Inspire Them: Remind students “The Basic Message” of this study (pg 82), explain WHAT the Big ldea behind the study is; WHY it matters, and HOW we can live the lesson captured in the study.

Ministry Activity: DISCERNMENT PRAYER

Ask a volunteer to pray that God would give the class the strength to make good decisions when picking entertainment, even though sometimes the good choices aren’t always what they enjoy most. Also, ask the students to pray that God would give the class members discernment to know what entertainment choices are good for them and which ones are not, even if it is difficult at times to know for sure.

Teacher Hint: Ask Yourself…

1. Do students understand that their entertainment choices can affect them positively or negatively?

2. Did they see that their choices of entertainment can flow out of them and possibly hinder the effectiveness of the gospel?

3. Do they realize that God doesn’t limit our entertainment choices because He doesn’t want us to have fun; He does it because it is best for our character development?

VIctory Over Satan Part One. RCCG SOD Year Four

An Essential Ingredient To A Miraculous Ministry

In Matthew 4:18-25, we discover that the Lord did n0o miracles until he had settled with Satan. You must have victory over Satan before you can move on to a miraculous ministry. You have to conquer Satan. In Matthew 4:11 , Jesus Christ dealt with Satan in the wilderness and get victory over him.

In other words, before he began his miraculous ministry, Jesus had gotten victory over Satan. The following are steps that Jesus took to his miraculous ministry.

#1 Baptism in water

This represents  our own conversion and baptism in water. Jesus needed not to repent because he never sinned.

#2 Holy Spirit Baptism

As He was coming out of the water after being baptized in water, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came upon him and he was baptized in the Holy Spirit. This represents our baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is the same spirit that baptised Jesus Christ that baptised us.

#3 He fasted and had victory over Satan

The Holy Spirit directed Him to the wilderness after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights to be tempted by Satan. This implies that the disciple must have his flesh crucified .

Also, if there is a need for deliverance , the disciple must undergo deliverance. The disciple also must be sanctified in order to live a life of holiness. After these three steps, miracles can then begin to follow your ministry.

All the miracles Jesus performed were related to the temptations. He overcame in the wilderness. There are three major temptations the devil brought before Him.

For example:

  1. In Matthew 4:3-4, the devil had told the Lord to satisfy his fleshly desire by turning stones to become bread. and the Lord declined . In  Matthew 14:13-21, the same Jesus who refused to turn stones to bread was able to multiply 5 loaves and 2 fishes to feed multitudes.

2. In Matthew 4:5-7 , the devil asked the Lord to defy the law of nature by jumping down  from the pinnacle of the temple. This particular law of nature was the law of gravity. Our Lord Jesus refused, he passed the exam.

But in Matthew 14:22-23 , the same law of gravity was set aside when Jesus had to walk on water to meet his disciples on the other side of the shore. There is a link between the temptation to defy the law of gravity and Jesus walking on water.

In Matthew 4:8-10, the devil asked Jesus Christ to worship him. The Bible tells us that the devil was the one who had power over death. The one who had power over death said to Jesus “bow down and worship me”. Jesus said “No way”.

But in John 11:41-44, when the time came for Jesus to raise Lazarus from dead. Because he had not bowed down to the power of death, he was able to defeat death. When Jesus Christ called Lazarus to come out of the tomb, he simply said , “Lazarus, come forth”. He did not say “death, leave my friend alone”. He ignored death.

Later on, Satan through Peter tried to dissuade Jesus from dying for us. In Matthew 26:29,42 Jesus yeilded to His Father’s will. Jesus Christ gained complete and perfect victory and control over Satan because he did His Father’s will in dying for us and was raised from the dead.

According to Hebrews 2:14-15, because Jesus tasted death for every man, He is able to deliver those who are in the bondage of fear and death. Revelations 1:18 tell us that Jesus not only defeated Satan by submission to his His Father’s perfect will which cost Him his life but took all authority from Satan. For he said that He now has the keys of death and of hell. He is the one who was dead but is now alive forever more. Amen. He has the keys of death and of hell. A key is a symbol of authority.

Matthew 28:18, says that all powers in heaven and on earth has been given to him. This means all authority, all ‘ecclesia’ (Greek) has been given to him. This is why Philippians 2:8-11 is forever settled. This speaks of how God highly exalted Jesus, giving Him a name that is above every other names, that at the name of Jesus, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

In Luke 13:11-16, we see that because the Lord refused to submit to Satan , Jesus was able all the time to command Satan to loose all his victims. If he had submitted to Satan, he would have become the slave of Satan and a slave cannot command his master. That is why in John 8:36, the Bible says that whosoever the Son shall set free shall be free indeed. jesus gives physical and spiritual freedom.

Before Jesus was able to perform all these miracles , He had to conquer Satan first, which he did. He conquered him for the masses. He conquered him over the question of gravity and so could push aside the law of gravity by walking on water. He refused to bow down to the one who had the power of death and was able to raise the dead anytime he wanted to. And because he is not a slave to Satan, he could command the devil to loose all his captives.

The question now is “what about we disciples?” The Bible says that our victory had been handed over to us by Christ. According to Romans 4:7-8, 5:1-2; 4:24-25, the Bible makes it clear that we can claim all the victory that Jesus won by faith, because he is our champion. And if your champion wins you have won, if he loses you have lost.

The Bible also tells us in Colossians 2:10-15 that we are complete in Christ. Through him and through his blood we are complete. We have a direct link with the Almighty God. In other words , I can tell Satan that I am a victor because my Captain has defeated him. Likewise I have defeated him.

In 1 Peter 3:18, the Bible says:

“For Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust that he might bring us to God , being put to death in the flesh, but quickened in the spirit”.

He has already suffered for our sins. As many of us that had received him and are washed in his blood, we have already been brought into direct contact with God.

Anytime you want to perform a miracle and the devil questions your authority and ability, tell him that by the special grace of God, you have won the same victory that Jesus Christ won. The three steps he took before he performed these miracles have also been taken by you. You are born again and baptised in the same spirit that baptised Jesus, and you have overcome the devil because your captain vercame him.

His victory is your victory, so you can begin to perform miracles in Jesus name.

Understanding Repentance. RCCG Sunday School Manual

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 (KJV)

Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

MEMORY VERSE: Acts 3:19 (KJV)

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

INTRODUCTION

Technically, repentance is a change of mind, not just a turning from sin. The Greek word translated as repentance is metanoia, and the meaning is simply a change of mind.

In common usage, however, we often speak of repentance as “a turning from sin.” In this lesson, we will discuss the role of the Holy Spirit in repentance and its outcome.

OUTLINES:

The Convicting Work of The Holy Spirit

The Final Products

1. The Convicting Work Of The Holy Spirit

Repentance is often associated with salvation in the scripture, that is, what happens when the Holy Spirit begins HIs work to bring a person to salvation

The Spirit gives the sinner a personal understanding and infallible conviction that The facts concerning his spiritual state are true (John 16:8).

Those facts are his sin, the eternal punishment due for his sin. the substitutionary nature of Jesus’ suffering for his sin as well as the need for faith in Jesus to save him from his sin Romans 6:23; Corinthians 5:21).

From that convicting work of the Holy Spirit, the sinner repents; he changes his mind about sin, the Saviour and salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9).

When a repentant person changes his mind about sin, that change of mind naturally leads to a turning from sin. Sin is no longer desirable or fun because sin brings condemnation (Romans 5:17-18).

The repentant sinner begins to dislike his past misdeeds and he starts seeking ways to amend his behaviour (Luke 19:8; Acts 2:37).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Students should mention other types of sin they have come across in the bible.

2. The Final Products

Ultimately, the result of the change of mind about sin is good deeds (Matthew 3:8; Titus 2:7, 14).

The sinner turns away from sin towards faith in the Saviour, and that faith is shown in action (James 2:17).

Repentance concerning salvation is a change of mind from an embrace of sin to rejection of sin and the rejection of Christ to faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:1-5).

Such repentance is something only God can enable John 6:44; 2 Timothy 2:25).

Therefore, true biblical repentance will always result in a change of behaviour (2 Corinthians 5:17)

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

Students should share any experience of freedom they had from the claws of sin and the effect on their existence.

CONCLUSION: RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENT MANUAL 22 OCTOBER 2023

Your character must change from sinful to godly if you have repented. It is not just turning from sin but turning to God.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Technically, repentance is a change of mind, not just a turning from sin. The Greek word translated as repentance is metanoia, and the meaning is simply a change of mind. In common usage, however, we often speak of repentance as “a turning from sin.” In this lesson, we will discuss the role of the Holy Spirit in repentance and its outcome.

LESSON AIM: To teach students the doctrine of repentance.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this study, students are expected to:
i. Know the etymology of repentance.
ii. Understand the interactional work of the Holy Spirit that leads to repentance.
iii. Know the resultant effect of repentance in the life of a person.

TEXT REVIEW: 2 Corinthians 7:9-10
Apostle Paul while explaining to the brethren in Corinth, the reason for the joy he had, made a clear distinction between godly sorrow and the sorrow of the world saying:
Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry…….. V9a.
But that ye ……………. V9b
For ye were ……………. V9c.
For godly sorrow …….. V10.

LESSON OUTLINE
LESSON OUTLINE1: THE CONVICTING WORK
OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Repentance is often associated with salvation in scripture, that is, what happens when the Holy Spirit begins His work to bring a person to salvation.

A. The Spirit gives the sinner a personal understanding and infallible conviction that the facts concerning his spiritual state are true (John 16:8).
Those facts are his sin, the eternal punishment due him for his sin
The substitutionary nature of Jesus’ suffering for his sin as well as the need for faith in Jesus to save him from his sin (Romans 6:23; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
From that convicting work of the Holy Spirit, the sinner repents; he changes his mind about sin, the Saviour and salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9).

B. When a repentant person changes his mind about sin:
That change of mind naturally leads to a turning from sin. Sin is no longer desirable or fun because sin brings condemnation (Romans 5:17-18).
The repentant sinner begins to dislike his past misdeeds and he starts seeking ways to amend his behaviour (Luke 19:8; Acts 2:37).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why do you think some people change their ways and others do not though they are under the same atmosphere of the Holy Spirit and the word?

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE FINAL PRODUCTS

Ultimately, the result of the change of mind
about sin is good deeds (Matthew 3:8; Titus 2:7, 14).
The sinner turns away from sin towards faith in the Saviour.
That faith is shown in action (James 2:17).
Repentance in relation to salvation is a change of mind from an embrace of sin to rejection of sin and from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:1-5).
Such repentance is something only God can enable (John 6:44:2 Timothy 2:25).
Therefore, true biblical repentance will al- ways result in a change of behaviour (2 Corinthians 5:17).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should share their experiences on something bad they repented from.

CONCLUSION: Your character must change from sinful to godly if you have repented. It is not just turning from sin but turning to God.

EVALUATION: What is repentance according to the scripture in a sentence?

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, help me to genuinely turn away from every ungodly practice in my life.

ASSIGNMENT: Write five differences between repentance and remorsefulness. (2×5=10 marks).

1. Examine Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount and compare His standard for living with their personal values and actions.

2. Recognise the need to move beyond passive commitment to their faith and embrace a proactive approach to faith that includes engaging others with the gospel.

3. Commit to daily intercession in prayer and respond to the Holy Spirit’s direction in proclaiming truth and serving those in need.

Introducing the Lesson
As we have seen over the past two lessons, becoming Christ’s disciples calls for complete surrender of ourselves to Him and a commitment to follow Him. It is a total change, not only of how we view life, but how we live. It is, in a sense, *”upside-down living.”* Jesus’ teaching helps us see that God’s plan permeates our lives, touching everything that we say or do. Discipleship is transformational, and it impacts every area of life.

The Holy Scriptures
Matthew 5:1-16

[1]And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
[2]And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
[3]Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[4]Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
[5]Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
[6]Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
[7]Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
[8]Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
[9]Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
[10]Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[11]Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
[12]Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
[13]Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
[14]Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
[15]Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
[16]Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Commentary and Application

1. Unusual Blessings
*A. Blessings from God–Matthew 5:1-9
Jesus’ teachings in “The Sermon on the Mount” (Matthew 5-7) were very different from what His audience was used to hearing. Yet He wasn’t just teaching verbal puzzles. He wanted the crowd to shift their thinking about how to live.

The fundamental principle Jesus repeated was the direct, personal role that God plays in the lives of His children. In verses 1 and 2, Jesus did not directly address God as our Heavenly Father, but His later summary, “You are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect” (verse 48, NLT), makes that relationship clear.

The idea of blessing is what gives the opening verses of the Sermon on the Mount the traditional title, “The Beatitudes” (verses 3-10). However, such blessing goes beyond emotional happiness and goes beyond the concept of reward that comes to mind when we consider being blessed by God. When God blesses us, He brings to fruition His plan for us. True happiness and blessedness arrive as we live each day to the fullest under the guiding hand of our Creator and Heavenly Father.

But there is another side to each statement. Jesus directly connected some of life’s most difficult experiences with the blessing, happiness, and purpose His Father gives. He did so redemptively, taking things like poverty, sorrow, humility, hunger and thirst, and shaping them into expressions of yearning for communion with God.

Whether or not a person is penniless, if they open their eyes to their spiritually impoverished state without God and then turn to Him, He will begin to build His kingdom within them. Similarly, sorrow and mourning bring God’s intimate comfort, humility leads to immeasurable inheritance, and hunger and thirst for God’s righteousness bring complete fulfilment and satisfaction.

Jesus then began to shift from attitudes toward action. The call to mercy speaks to relationships, and pure hearts address our motives. In addition, we are to work for peace in a world riddled with conflict. In each case, God responds with equally concrete benefits.

Questions for Application
How have you discovered the effectiveness of one or more of these principles?

Why is it necessary to seek God’s enabling power to live out each point?

B. Immeasurable Reward–Matthew 5:10-12
In Matthew 5:10, Jesus was not saying that His followers should expect only conflict and persecution. Scripture describes the godly man or Woman who faithfully lives out God’s truth as prosperous relationally and even materially, though not to the extreme degree some popular teachers have claimed. For example, Proverbs 16:7 says, “When people’s lives please the LORD, even their enemies are at peace with them” (NLT), Or consider Proverbs 21:5: “Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty (NLT).

Jesus used the concept of persecution to drive home a truth fundamental to everything else He was saying: This world and unredeemed humanity are fallen, and will eventually pass away. Those who will accept the gospel and be redeemed will find themselves living within a world system deeply influenced by Satan and in total opposition to Christ. Resistance and rejection, then, are a natural by product of this opposition.

Amid whatever trials the believer might face, however, God is present. Note that Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:10-12 are in the present tense. In the midst of persecution, God is present and blessing. Even as mocking, persecution, and slander come against the Christ-follower, God is present and blessing. Jesus said this of His faithful ones: “For the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs” (verse 10. NLT), Rather than a response of gloom or despair, He called for believers to respond with happiness and joy as they look ahead to heaven’s immeasurable reward.

Questions for Application
What negative reactions to your faith in Čhrist have been difficult to endure?

How can we encourage and support fellow Christians facing persecution ?*2. Called to Make a Difference

A. Preserving Agents– Matthew 5:13
Salt in the ancient world was hard to come by. It was even used as currency. Greeks bought slaves with salt, and the expression “not worth his salt” comes from that unfortunate practice. Roman legions were sometimes paid in salarium, sal being the Latin word for salt, from which we get “salary.” Salt was primarily a preservative. In an age without refrigeration, this function was far more valuable than flavour
enhancement.

For alI these reasons, salt provided a powerful picture of how Christ’s followers were to live among the people around them. They were truly precious agents of change in a fallen and debased culture. They were to bring about restoration and preservation, influencing the lost to turn to God.

The salt of Jesus’ day wås the pure crystals commonly found or today’s tables. Because of impurities, a salty compound could lose its saltiness if the actual salt leached out and left only the residue. As illustrated by the “unsalty” salt Jesus mentioned, His followers could fail in their mission, proving to be ineffective in their service to the Kingdom. Jesus’ audience may have envisioned the salt dregs that were scattered on the earthen roofs of houses to further harden the material and prevent leaks. Roofs at that time were built to be stood on, so the salt was trampled underfoot. This is a compelling picture of believers who fail to bring positive change to a culture and are simply overwhelmed.

The description “the salt of the earth” is still applied in everyday usage to people perceived as upstanding and honest. Yet this popular understanding is the barest hint of what Jesus intended for His followers. We are to be far more than perceived as truthful; we are to be His agents for pointing people to the ultimate Truth.

Questions for Application
What opportunities can you identify to be a preserving and restoring influence on those around you, at home, on your job, or in your community?

What situations might render a follower of Christ “unsalty””?

B. Active Lights– Matthew 5:14-16
Too often, when Christians speak of letting their light shine, it is a passive expression. As if just going about one’s daily routine without falling into any obvious sin is all that Jesus meant by this command in Matthew 5:14-16. When applied this way, much of the personal responsibility Jesus connected with this teaching is ignored. Indeed, Jesus began the illustration with ways that light is observed. A city on a hill and an uncovered lamp are, in fact, seen. But if that was as far as His statement went, then He would have been only describing light’s appearance.

But Jesus Connected the believer’s light with action (verse 16). It is good deeds that do the actual shining for all to see. And these are not merely personal activities. They are actions that have an effect on others, to the point that people respond with praise to God. This reference to praising God is important on two levels. First, it includes the idea that Christ- followers are witnesses to a lost world through those actions that genuinely affect the lives of the lost and invite them into a redemptive encounter with the Heavenly Father.
Second, it shows that any praise for good deeds rightfully belongs to God rather than to any person. Jesus never taught a “gospel of works.”

We can never earn our salvation through good deeds. However, we demonstrate the reality of what Christ has accomplished in us by good works.

Questions for Application
How did someone else’s “light” influence you to accept Christ?

What steps can you take to shine more effectively to lost people around you?
3. Do Right for Right Reasons*
A. Don’t Give to Be Seen– Matthew 6:1-4

As Jesus continued teaching the crowds, He focused on a subject very close to the heart of everyone in the audience–their motivation (Matthew 6:1). Fallen human beings are by nature supremely selfish. Even something done for the benefit of someone else, if not motivated by the Holy Spirit, can become an exercise in ego-building (verses 24).

In Matthew 6, Jesus focused on three righteous acts common in Jewish culture: giving to the poor (verses 2-4), prayer (verses 5-14), and fasting (verses 16-18). He gave the same counsel regarding each. Believers are to shun public praise. If they seek such praise, the accolades they receive will be their only reward. But if they direct their actions toward God, they will enjoy a far more substantial reward. This is consistent with other statements in the Sermon on the Mount about momentary, decaying material life and the eternal and ever- new life God has in store for His children (cf..verses 19-20). One who seeks human praise for a good deed misses out on what God would do in and for them.

This point should not be Stretched out of proportion to Jesus’ intentions, The Christian does not have to live in fear that a struggle to adopt proper motives will cast aside all potential blessing from God. But selfish motives themselves will not be blessed by God, and actions based solely on ego contradict God’s desire that a believer act in humble dedication to Him.

Questions for Application
In light of Jesus’ teaching, how should things like plaques and certificates of recognition in church culture be viewed?

How can the believer balance a desire for a godly public reputation with humble commitment to pleasing the Heavenly Father?

B. True Prayer– Matthew 6:5-8
Before Jesus gave the sample prayer, traditionally known as “The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13), He explained briefly some basic principles of prayer that should be applied to all prayer, especially intercessory prayer. While the Lord’s Prayer succinctly shows us what should be included in prayer, Jesus first identified what should be
excluded.

The first exclusion is any form of self-focus. Jesus singled out those who prayed hypocritically just so they could be seen and admired (verse 5). But there are hypocritical prayers that today’s believer can fall into as well. We must guard against our prayers treating God as if He Owes us a blessing or can be controlled and told what to do in the
guise of quoting a scriptural promise.

Jesus called on His followers to pray privately (verse 6). More than a call to pray in isolation, this is a call for intimacy. The believer who dedicates time to private prayer will grow in relationship to the Heavenly Father. Such prayers make the needed transition from superficial wish lists to substantive worship and intercession. The second key exclusion in effective prayer is mindless repetition (verse 7).

Jesus was not prohibiting a repeated request. His parable about the widow and the unjust judge highlights the widow’s persistence and connects it with persistent prayer (see Luke 18:1-8). Here, Jesus directly referenced repetitious prayer offered like the prayers of pagans. In many false religions, repetitious prayer is a formula to control an idol or false god. So, again, this focuses on how we view God in our prayers.

Both the call for private prayer and the call for focused prayer rely on faith, When the Christian seeks a deeper relationship with God, and that relationship drives his or her prayer life, a wonderful reality becomes ever more clear. Our Heavenly Father sees that our every need is receiving His full attention.

Questions for Application
How can we apply the principles of the “prayer closet” during group prayer time?

Since God already knows our needs, why do we pray?

Call to Discipleship
In the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus calls us to total discipleship. We must trust the Holy Spirit to bring to life in us all that the Saviour taught and lived. As we become disciples, we will encounter resistance from our culture, and perhaps even our closest friends and family. But our obedience will serve as salt and light to point lost people to eternal life.

Ministry in Action
With the help of the Holy Spirit, address where your life fails to reflect Jesus’ teachings.

Consider whether or not you are living out your faith as salt and light.
Seek the help of the Lord if your reputation as Christ’s follower has been passive or lacking.

Develop the discipline of a daily prayer closet and commit to regular intercession for those in need around you.

Fact Check Policy

Do What’s Right. AG Sunday School Teen Manual.

TEXT: Prov 6:16-19; Eccl 12:13-14; Luke 12:15; Rom 12:1-2; 1 Tim 4:12; Titus 2:7-8

Key Verse: Galatians 1:10

Am l now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be servant of Christ. (NIV)

Focus

One of the main purposes we were created is to please God, We have the opportunity to live this out every day in the choices we make. Unfortunately, our society has become incredibly hedonistic – most people only live to please themselves. The life standards of the world are set by people who have only their own interest in mind. But Christians have a higher set of standards to follow that lead to eternal life.
The general image unbelievers have about Christians is that we are all miserable and don’t have the ability to enjoy our lives because we are living by God’s rules.

That is far from the truth. Living by God’s rules allows us to live fulfilled lives. When we obey God, we are doing what we were created to do. As you teach this study, keep this truth in mind, and try to communicate to students that there is peace and contentment in obeying God. Feel free to insert any personal experiences you have had when living by God’s Law enhanced or bettered your situation in any way.

The Basic Message: Explain to students…

 WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?
God wants us to live by His standards of right and wrong.

 WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Our lives will not be pleasing to God if we let our friends and our society define our standards.

 HOW DO I LIVE IT?
Commit to a lifestyle that pleases God, stand for what’s right no matter the cost, and live out a good example of Christianity to those around you.

Study Overview: Explain that today’s study considers…
• How society tries to define what’s right and wrong.
• How friends’ view and worldly standards cannot be the gauge by which Christian sets his or her own standards.
• How being a godly example can attract a hurting world.

inform and Discuss

a). Don’t let Society Set Your Standards

Guide: Explain that every person has certain standards they live by.
They have rules that allow them to determine what is acceptable and what they should avoid. The laws of our country set some of those standards and limits for us.

1. Why do you think we have these laws and limits?
Guide: Explain that standards are set with our best interest in mind. Parents often buy their young children things like tricycles, thus setting a standard that healthy activity for the child is desired. On the other hand, parents limit where their children ride tricycles to protect them from harm. In the same way, God has set certain standards for our lives that are in our best interest.

2. Read or have a volunteer read Prov 6:16-19. What do the things God detests have in common? [Hint Al the actions are self-serving rather than focusing on others. Some of them, like lying, killing, and starting dissension directly harm others.)

Guide: Explain that our standards should be set on doing good to others, not only doing what is good for us. Sometimes this can seem at odds to a popular view in society – the one that encourages you to get everything you can for yourself, even at the expense of others.

Guide: Read or have a volunteer read Luke 12:15. Explain that this verse tells us to stay away from greed. This is contrary to the standard the society sets, which glories focus on gathering up all the possessions we can.

3. What do you think Jesus meant when He said, “A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possession”?
Guide: Explain that possessions cone and go. If you set your value and self-worth based on what you have, you will feel good when you have a lot and terrible when you lose it. Instead our self-Worth should be found in our relationship with God and the fact that we are His beautiful creation whom He loves and cherishes.

b). Live to Please God
1. Read or have a volunteer read Rom 12:1-2. Why should we live lives focused on pleasing God? [Hint: Our lives should be focused on doing what pleases God for three reasons:
• Because of the mercy we have been shown.
• Because it is a spiritual act of worship.
• Because it allows us to find God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will.

2. How does doing what pleases God make our lives better? [Hint: God has a perfect will and plan for each of our lives. When we live to please God we know that we will and are able to fulfil God’s will. When we are fulfilling it, our quality of life improves because we are doing what we were created to do.

3. If pleasing God allows us to fulfil our created purpose, why do some people choose to please themselves or others instead? [Hint: It allows them to fulfil their own selfish desires because they either don’t understand or refuse to acknowledge that God’s desires are better for them than their own.

c.) Stay Accountable
1. Read or have a volunteer read Titus 2:7-8. Why was it important for Titus to be an example in godly living? [Hint: As a pastor, his actions were being watched closely. In the same way, people are watching your actions to see how you live, and whether or not you are following Christ’s standards.

2. Read or have a volunteer read 1 Tim 4:12. Why was it necessary and important for Timothy to be an example to all Christians regardless of his age?

Hint: Though a young pastor, Timothy’s age didn’t mean he was excused from being a good example. Teens in our society are sometimes expected to rebel against- rules and act irresponsibly. Christian teens should put off social expectations and follow God’s expectations by setting an example for society as well as other Christians.

Guide: Explain that teenagers often follow the examples set by other teenagers. One teenager passionately pursuing God’s will can inspire others to do the same. The energy produced by a group of positively charged teenagers can not only energize a church worship service, but it can cause a godly spiritual revolution that can change a whole church atmosphere for the better. Don’t waste this awesome season of your life, make impact!!

3. Read or have a volunteer read Eccl 12:13-14. What does It mean to fear God?
>>Guide: Explain that we are not only accountable to each other to be a good example, but ultimately we are accountable to God to do what is right.

God will judge every action we take. That can seem like a lot of pressure, but it should be used as a motivation to do what is right. We should obey God because we have respect for who He is.

Involve Them: FAST HAND
Distribute paper and pen or pencil. Write a simple sentence or verse on the board and ask students to copy down the verse or sentence with the hand which they do not usually write. After they’re done, discuss with them the following questions:

• What challenge did you encounter keeping to the instruction?
• What are some examples of times when doing what was right was more difficult than doing what was wrong?

Guide: Explain that it would have been much easier and probably faster to have copied what was on the board with their normal writing hand, but doing so would have disqualified them from winning the race. It is always necessary and important to follow God standards on every issue of life, instead of falling to the temptation of following easy but ungodly standards.

Inspire Them: Remind students “The Basic Message” of this study (pg 78), explain WHAT the Big Idea behind the study is; WHY it matters; and HOW we can live the lesson captured in the study.

Ministry Activity: GOALS

Allow students to form small groups of three to four people. In each small group, allow students to share something in their lives they want to commit to do (or not do) based on what God wants from them (e.g. praying twice a day, not watching movies of a certain rating, hanging out with a certain friend more for witnessing opportunities, etc.) After sharing their goals, allow a member from the group to pray for the group’s success in fulfilling their goals.

Teacher Hint: Ask Yourself…
1. Do students understand why its important to live by God’s standards?
2. Can students explain why they mustn’t let friends or society define their standards of behaviour?
3. Were students given opportunity to commit to a lifestyle that pleases God?
4. Did students define ways they could live as example of Christ to others?

SESSION CONFESSIONS

I am not what the world thinks or say I am. I am not what the devil or the kingdom of darkness says I am or imagines me to be. I am not the picture of what my idolatrous forefathers wished I should be. I am not what the unregenerate mind thinks I should be. I am not what my village wickedness want me to be. I am not a picture of what the national economy and institutionalized wickedness have restricted many people to be. I am not what I think I am. I am what the word of God says I am. I am an express image of Jehovah God on earth.

I am regenerated by the blood of Jesus. I am ransomed from the powers of death and hell. I am blood-washed. I am redeemed. I am justified by Christ . I am made to be the righteousness of God through Christ. I am a believer in  the Word of Truth. I am born again. I am heaven-bound; my citizenship is in heaven. I am seated with Christ in the heavenly places, far and above principalities , powers and dominions. I am a priest and a king ordained by Christ to rule here on earth. I am the fear and the dread of God against the kingdom of darkness , I am a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit of God. I am built up together and attached with other children of God into a holy habitation of God. No power contrary to God can change that.
