COMMENTARY

The background to Psalm 51 is 2 Samuel 11 and 12 which record David’s sin of adultery with Bathsheba, the killing of her husband, Uriah, in an unsuccessful attempt to cover it up, and the just judgment of God for the dastardly act delivered by Prophet Nathan.

In a demonstration of humility, remorse, and penitence, David wrote the Psalm in which he admitted his iniquity and cried for God’s mercy..

According to 2 Sam 11, David’s steps into the two sins began with idleness, not going to war when he was supposed to do so with his soldiers, and lack of self-control.

The next one, he saw the woman bathing. She was so beautiful he couldn’t resist the urge to sleep
With her and so he used his position as a king to send for her.

The encounter resulted in pregnancy. David fought very hard to lure her husband with unusual deeds of kindness to go to his house and sleep with his wife and be responsible for the pregnancy but he wouldn’t, so he sent a letter to Joab to post him to the hottest part of the battle, without any good support so that the enemy might kill him and it was so.

Thus, upon Uriah’s death, David sent for Bathsheba who became his wife. Managing sin is often not a very easy task. It can lead to murdering innocent people as in this case.

No human being is above temptation including sexual sins but the Bible says we should flee from such temptations, 1Cor. 6: 18; 1 Thess 5:22.

If we fall into sin as human beings, we should show remorse, Confess, repent of it, and pray for God’s mercy, without passing the buck or attacking “Prophet Nathan”, 1 John 1:7-9. As part of God’s judgment, the child that was born died.

However, in response to David’s cry for mercy, God showed up in 2 Sam 12:24-25. Bathsheba conceived again and gave birth to Solomon. You too, can be forgiven.
